Christy Nicholas loves all things historical, especially if it has anything to do with Ireland, Scotland, England, or Iceland, and she writes historical fantasy, travel guides, and a book on writing craft. Her tales tend to the gritty, with bittersweet endings, and she's never afraid to torture her characters. But there is beauty in all darkness, and she loves showing that, as well.

I have to admit to not having read a travel guide before so I was a little unsure what to expect but I truly enjoyed this fantastic guide and It has inspired me to want to explore Iceland. Filled with interesting informative information and so many helpful tips this really is a fun read that will both help and inspire you.
This is the 4th book in the Hidden Gems Series. These books are great as travel guides but all the information the author puts in makes them so much more than a normal travel guide. This guide is all about Iceland and covers every topic from myths and legends, the food and drink, the hidden gems to find and even has a step by step guide for planning your trip to make it as successful and enjoyable as possible. I have never been to Iceland myself however from reading this I feel like I have viewed the same things the author has and it has sparked my interest.
The authors attention to detail in every area of this book is what really makes it the only travel guide you will need. As well as all the information which is written in a easy to digest way the author also includes beautiful pictures that were taking in Iceland and this added detail really brings the place to life. The author also has a love of history which I also love and their knowledge of historical happens and the places of historical interest in Iceland was really good.
If I ever decide to go to Iceland I will definately be taking this book as my travel companion.
A comprehensive look into Iceland as a travel destination. The book delves into all aspects of what to discover in Iceland and the culture including mythology, folklore and other unusual facts you may not now. There are also several photographs that help visualize what is being described.
I thought this was well done and definitely want to plan a trip to Iceland, it sounds absolutely beautiful. One of the reasons I was looking forward to this story was the folklore and this book did not disappoint. Had several tidbits about lore I was unfamiliar with. Well done, if you are looking for a travel book this is a great one to pick up.
This magical travel guide about Iceland is another winner from Christy Nicholas!!
I had no clue that Iceland was such a mesmerizing and wondrous place. Christy Nicholas brings the Icelandic experience to life. I learned some things I didn’t know. For example, the landscape is constantly changing because of the frequent volcanic activity.
Nicholas includes how Iceland was formed and the history of Iceland from its early settlements to the present day. A chapter is dedicated to folklore and legends with a list of lesser-known magical creatures. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Norse Mythology.
Who knew there was such a strong coffee culture in Iceland? Some other items of interest were the music culture and the festivals. There is a section of books and movies that are based in Iceland. I loved her stories of meeting locals.
I thought the section on planning your travel to Iceland was informative. I liked the traveling tips she included, such as asking yourself the following questions: Who? Who is going with you? What? What are you planning on doing? Where? Where are you going, which depends on what you will do? When? Summer is more expensive and crowded. Winter is harsher but cheaper. How? How are you going to travel around your destination? Why? Why are you going?
She gives you hints on research, how to plan and save money, and most importantly, she includes the hidden gems to discover.
As always, Nicholas writes in such an entertaining way. It’s not dull and technical, and the pictures were stunning. She made me add Iceland to my list of places I would like to travel to.
Iceland: Fjords, Fire, and Folklore: A Guide to Hidden Iceland is the fourth book in the Hidden Gems series by Christy Nicholas. This is another great travel guide with a lot of essential travel tips for your Icelandic adventure. Iceland has long been on my bucket list to explore, and even more so now after reading this book. As mentioned before, Ms. Nichol’s has a keen eye for detail, and passion for history, which when combined- makes for a comprehensive and detailed travel guide. She has produced a complete travel guide which covers not only the majestic fjords, ancient glaciers, fiery volcanos, breathtaking scenery + captivating landscapes, vibrant culture, the folklore +legends, gods, sorcery, history, northern lights, geothermal springs, and culinary delights of Iceland with more practical advice, such as planning and budgeting. This guide provides so much information, but written in an easy to read and understand way- and knowing that all this information, the helpful tips, inspiring photographs, and insights all come from the author’s personal experience, makes me appreciate the book even more. All the hard work has been done by the author who has provided us with all the information she garnered in her own travels, and then generously supplying detailed itineraries to help us experience the most memorable of adventure/s. Happy Reading, and Happy Travels…
As someone who has always been fascinated by Iceland, and who wants to travel there, but has not had a chance to this book was really interesting. Anyone interested in this country or especially visiting should look this this book, it provides so much great info. The book starts by discussing the history and majestic aspects of the culture. Then it also gives you insight into the locals and the culture that is important, even how to understand the love of coffee. My favorite chapters were the culinary chapter, the travel tips, and the hidden gems. I often worry about the food aspect because food has always played an important role in my experiences. I was glad to know that between the seafood, bread, and pastries I would be good. In the tips chapter, she answers many questions about where to stay, how to get around, and must-see sights. Lastly, I am someone who likes to learn and live the culture when traveling, the hidden gems chapter gives insight into some sights that are not as popular, and that is right up my alley. I will definitely reference this book again when I finally decide to make the trip.
Iceland: Fjords, Fire and Folklore Is your ultimate guide to discovering Iceland. The author has masterfully weaved together her passion for both travel and history into this definitive guide. She includes the history of Iceland, its culture, values, beliefs, folklore, food, and undiscovered places. The author discusses topics such as geothermal springs, ancient glaciers, volcanoes, and the breath-taking landscapes that make up Iceland. She also includes things that she has learned during her own travels such as smart saving strategies, planning, transportation, budget, and meals. Other topics include Icelandic folklore, mythology, witchcraft, and sorcery. I was especially intrigued by the tale of the 13 Yule Lads and Yule Cat. Of the 13 Yule Lads I was fascinated by one named Pot Scraper who licks unwashed pots clean; and one named Spoon Licker whose specialty is licking spoons clean. Very interesting stuff indeed! This easy-to-read and informative guide covers everything that one could ever want to know about Iceland and includes beautiful full-color photographs throughout. A must read for anyone wanting to travel to Iceland.
If you are looking at planning a trip to the beautiful land of Iceland, this book is a great place to start, it is chock full of interesting facts about every aspect of planning, organising and taking the trip and includes beautiful photographs throughout showing examples of the places being spoken about.
It takes you through the best places to look for flights and hotels, recommendations of the type of accommodation and most importantly, where is best for the different types of holidays Iceland has to offer.
The main part of the book details a lot of the sites which are worth visiting and separated them according to the area of Iceland they reside in, also spoken about are the methods of travel and recommendations of the level of hiking which are sometimes involved in getting to these places.
Christy Nicholas has in all, created a guide to Iceland which both talks fondly of Iceland's past, present, traditions and life from the perspective of someone who had travelled there frequently, it is done in an easy to understand a respectful way and is full of advice, tricks to make your trip smooth and all the treats available when you get there.
I have read each book in The Hidden Gem Series, and Iceland is definitely the contender for my next trip now! This is a must-read for anyone seeking an authentic Icelandic adventure away from the typical tourist crowds. The author combines her expert knowledge with a deep passion for Iceland’s untold wonders, guiding readers through its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and captivating folklore. One of my favorite parts of this book is folklore and legends. The book is a treasure trove of insider insights as the author provides practical advice on budgeting and detailed itineraries, making it easy for travelers to plan an unforgettable trip while avoiding the masses. Whether you’re drawn to hidden sites steeped in mystery or the natural beauty of Iceland’s fiery terrain, this guide delivers a fresh perspective that will leave you feeling like you’ve discovered a secret side of the country! What stands out most is the balance between expert tips and a conversational tone, making the book feel like a personal travel companion. If you’re looking to experience Iceland in a truly unique way, this is the perfect guide to help you create lasting memories on this incredible journey.
This is a visually stunning book, and in a sense, Nicholas’s title does not do it justice. She offers so much more than what the title suggests. The book begins with comprehensive descriptions of the cultural, historical, folkloric background of Iceland. As it turns out, Iceland has so much more to offer: a thriving festival and music scene, snorkeling (yes you read that correctly), swimming, hot springs, birdwatching, hiking, camping, film sites and up-and-coming culinary opportunities. I believe I was most impressed with the author’s systematic way of aiding the first-time traveler in organizing a trip to this beautiful still-growing island. She offers tips on procuring a visa or passport, useful photo equipment to bring, lodging, financial planning/monetary exchange, car rental, health and car insurance, as well as regional maps, helpful Icelandic words, and planning websites, etc. This is a fairly comprehensive book I feel most people could feel comfortable using it to organize a trip to this gorgeous republic.
Iceland is on my list of places to visit so this was a great book to read! It was filled with history, folklore, the who - what - where- when - why to travel Iceland, and so much more. It also included information about music, food, and all the places to visit. It will be an awesome guide once I start planning a trip. Iceland sounds amazing and I have wanted to go to see the Northern Lights. I found it interesting that that is one of their slowest and cheapest times to travel. I could have used some background on the language at the beginning of the book or how to pronounce some things. There are a few letters and marks that aren’t used in English that I wasn’t sure how to say. Also, I wish that the pictures added to the information more, it was a lot of random pictures. When reading about music I would have liked to see the instruments, or when reading about places there could have been some actual photos. Most of the photos were of animals and the landscape. Overall this book was really informative and I will come back to it when I’m ready to plan a trip!
I have to be honest. I have zero intentions of traveling to Iceland. It wouldn't be in my top 5 places to travel. However, I do find guides like these incredibly interesting. When they dive into far more than just regular travel guides, and introduce you to so much more, I find it fascinating. This guide gets into the history and culture of Iceland. It tells you about the people and the art of the land. You can explore Iceland within the comfort of your home, without any pants on. :D I don't know about anyone else, but when it comes to some place I want to travel, THIS is what I'm looking for. I don't want a map or two telling you go here, here and here. I want information about where I am going.
Iceland: Fjords, Fire, and Folklore: A Guide to Hidden Iceland (The Hidden Gems Series) by Christy Nicholas. This is such a gorgeous book and its got so much information inside. It's a definite must read especially if you are thinking of a trip to Iceland. This book tells us so much about the area and its more than just places you must see, eat and visit, its full of folklore, legends and rich history that will make you feel like you've visited just by reading the book. Iceland includes many things for visitors to explore including restaurants, music, camping, hiking and believe it or not even snorkeling. The book is very organized for a person that needs all the help with organization for a trip to Iceland. Such a great book.
Iceland is somewhere that I have only ever visited once but know with absolute certainty that I want to go back again. And when I do, this is definitely the book that I will be taking with me. I love all the hidden gems it references. They are all places I want to go and experience for myself. I loved the insight into their culture. I always knew Iceland was an interesting place – their Christmas Eve tradition and Halloween tradition being just two examples I was aware of. This book introduces you to so many more fantastically wonderful things that I want to see and try for myself. This book has fully reignited my desire to go back to this beautiful country and I think the author has done a fantastic job at capturing how amazing it is.
I recently finished a book where the characters are in Iceland and I’ve been fascinated with the country for some time. I’m not much of a traveler so exploring new places in books is the best route for me and this book became available to read. The author was great at expressing the many wonders of Iceland through its history, myth and folklore and preferred destination in a language that made it feel like you’re conversing with them directly. The book even includes affordable, practical travel plans to go to this exciting country. If I wasn’t already convinced enough before of this fascinating place, I have definitely fallen in love with its historical origins, mystical tales and beautiful landscapes. I really do hope I can put this plan to action and set foot on this magical place!

Another fun travel/tour guide from this author. This is filled with fantastic information from historical periods that is cool to know. There are pictures. It’s broken into sections such as folklore/myths, culinary and essential traveling tips. This is one of those books that you want to add in your bag that will have the hidden secrets of places to find or discover while you’re there. It’s written in a way that’s really quite enjoyable. I won’t be able to get there but I’ve really enjoyed reading the books in this series. It’s like being there as you’re reading.
This book is by an author that I have enjoyed from non-fiction to fiction. I never hesitate to pick up one of her books. This book is about Iceland and the Hidden Gems found within. I enjoyed how the author brings this land to life and the vivid details. The author takes you on a journey of landscapes and ancient realms, each more interesting than the next. This is an entertaining and easy to read book. The author uses language that is easy to understand which enhances the enjoyment of this book. This is a place I would like to visit one day. I highly recommend this book
"Iceland: Fjords, Fire, and Folklore" by Christy Nicholas is an essential travel companion for anyone seeking to explore Iceland's lesser-known treasures beyond the typical tourist trails. Or like myself, wanting to just know more about the country. Out of the books i read by Nicholas, this one was my favorite because I knew the least about Iceland. Nicholas combines expert insights with practical tips and vibrant folklore, leading readers to breathtaking landscapes and cultural wonders that are often overlooked. T
I doubt I'll ever get to travel to Iceland personally but after reading this book, it makes me want to go even more! I would have never guessed about some of the hidden intricacies of such a beautiful place and I'm sure many would say that while the pictures are great, they don't do it justice. There are many aspects of Iceland covered in this read, from the cultural aspects, places to see that are off the beaten path, foods to try, and more!
This is a great resource to have if you're planning a trip to Iceland or, like me, just armchair dreaming!
If all travel reviews could be like this book, I'd be traveling all over! Iceland has never been on my bucket list before. About a year ago, a family member vacationed there and it sounded alright but probably not somewhere I'd plan to go. Now after reading this book, it's on my bucket list! I loved the history, how it was formed, the folklore and the list of places to visit! If you are interested in traveling to Iceland, or are open to potentially going, I recommend not missing out on this book!

Iceland: Fjords, Fire, and Folklore: A Guide to Hidden Iceland (The Hidden Gems Series), , my sixth read from author Christy Nicholas. Perhaps not for everyone but I found it to be a well-written, enjoyable, 271-page read on the wonders of Iceland. Part of Nicholas' The Hidden Gems Series. “I received a Kindle copy of this book earlier this month and after reading want to read the rest of the series as well. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Christy’s travel guides are far more than a travel guide. They are a deep dive into a culture, and provide a much more thorough feeling of being present (not just visiting). She stars by explaining history, culture and arts – then does an exhaustive review of where to go and why Even when I’ve visited locations she describes, I find myself learning so much more, and wanting to go back to explore everything I missed.
One of the best tourism books I've read in a while. This gives you history, folklore and mythology, culture, and more. You get recommendations on how to plan, pack, travel, eat, and be entertained. I learned so much about Iceland that I did not know before. The book itself is also easy and entertaining to read. It really makes me want to plan a trip! I'm so happy that I received an advanced review copy of this book.
I've always wanted to visit Iceland, mostly because of the lagoon, but backroads also sound like a dream 😍 also Vikings and Pagans 😊 yes please!!! The pastries sound heavenly, I'm not sure my lower class taste buds could handle the richness of the traditional plates though! Random coffee outposts in the middle of nowhere, also- yes please!!! From the waterfalls to the fjords to the mythical legends, this book truly has every interest covered!!!
