A swoony, kick-your-feet-in-the-air, second chance romance infused with humor and heartfelt connections.
Winslow "Winnie" Parker is a relationship girl through and through--she just likes for them to come with an expiration date.
Between managing her anxiety and opening her bakery, Winnie's come to the conclusion she's not meant to have the kind of love she reads about in romance novels. She's meant to appreciate it--not participate in it. A hopeless romantic, emphasis on hopeless. She's been fine with playing it safe for years.
That is until Rhett Holloway comes back into her life. The 6'4" tattooed solid muscle greek god on skates with a smile as bright as sunshine is back in their hometown--and he's moving in next door. The feelings she had for him 8 years ago are still there. Feelings that threaten to turn her carefully crafted view on love upside down.
Barrett "Rhett" Holloway is best known for playing professional hockey--and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind him.
Playing professional hockey is all Rhett's known for the last decade. After an injury shortens his career sooner than expected he's trading his mouth guard in for a whistle as Silverthorne High's new hockey coach. At 33 he's ready to settle down and start a family of his own. The only problem with is the only time he's ever been in love was 8 years ago and he's still in love with her.
Winnie Parker, wild curls and snarky comments, is the one that got away--even if he's the one that left. After a stroke of luck in the house market, they'll be living right next door to each other. He won't make it as easy this time for her to avoid him or the feelings she won't admit to. He's looking for forever and he has his sights set on Winnie.
Rhett may have fallen first, but when Winnie falls, it's headfirst off a cliff.
Rhett's strong and steady nature may be exactly what Winnie needs to soothe her anxious mind-she just has to decide if she's willing to risk her heart and take a chance on the only man she's ever come close to falling for.

4 ⭐️ This was a super cute story! This was my first Bea Borges book and I loved it. She certainly has a way with words and I couldn’t put it down. Rhett and Winnie were both lovable characters and their childhood friends to lovers, second chance romance was a blast to read. They had great chemistry and Rhett was just the sweetest.
What to expect: 🏒 Ex NHL player turned HS hockey coach 🧁 Childhood friends to lovers 🏒 Second chance romance 🧁 Small town 🏒 Slow burn - fade to black 🧁 Brother’s best friend 🏒 Anxiety rep 🧁 She owns a bakery 🏒 Colorado setting 🧁 MCs over 25
Bea is an indie author and this was her debut novel. With that being said, there are some editing issues that came into play with this book that I suspect improves in her next books.
3.75⭐️ Bea promised us a swoony smalltown and she delivered. I relate HARD to Winnie—a clumsy baker with an avoidant attachment style OOF. I cannot wait to see this author grow and for the next in this series!!!
I’m not sure if I got used to her style or what, but I found the writing had a much better flow towards the middle and end. The beginning prose felt stilted, like she wasn’t using complex sentences. Regardless, I had so much fun with this quick, light read! Not to mention the cover and all the character art!!!!! So good.
Sadly, I didn't. It had all the elements I'm usually drawn to. Small town? Check. Older brother's best friend? Check. Tatted mmc? Friends to lovers? Second chance? Found family? Yes to all.
Unfortunately, and despite all the winning tropes above, this wasn't it. There were many little things that didn't work out for me, but my main issue were the dialogues. They were meant to be cute, swoon-worthy, cheeky and profound, but instead I found them borderline unrealistic, excessive and much too cheesy.
The only thing that, by the end, had me somewhat invested was the hint to a future "enemies-to-lovers" story between the two secondary characters, and even that was spoon fed to the reader as subtly as a pink-sequined elephant walking into a china store.
(On an additional note, and though it didn't affect my final opinion on the story, I'd strongly recommend a couple extra rounds of revisions. There were several inconsistencies in terms of speech tense, and some idioms/word pairings were repeated so closely to each other, it was quite noticeable. I'm aware an ARC is still a wip and many of those errors will be fixed before the release, but I still think it's worth mentioning because it happened continuously.)
Congratulations to the author for her debut novel and a big fat thank you to her and the team of Truly Yours PR for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange of my honest opinion.
Worth the Risk is the perfect small-town, closed-door romance palette cleanser. It’s heartfelt, swoony, and brimming with charm, offering just the right amount of angst and sweetness to keep you hooked.
The story beautifully intertwines beloved tropes—brother’s best friend, close proximity, second chance romance, and a golden retriever hockey player—making it an utterly delightful experience for trope lovers. The chemistry between the leads is magnetic, and their emotional journey feels authentic without veering into overly dramatic territory.
One of the highlights is the male lead. As a golden retriever hockey player, he brings an irresistible mix of kindness, loyalty, and warmth. His character contrasts well with the emotional walls the female lead has built, and their dynamic keeps the pages turning.
While the romance is closed-door, it doesn’t lack intimacy. The quiet moments, stolen glances, and genuine connection between the characters make their relationship incredibly satisfying. The small-town setting adds another layer of coziness, making it the ideal comfort read.
My only minor critique is that some parts of the pacing felt rushed, especially toward the resolution. A bit more time spent fleshing out the conflicts could have deepened the emotional payoff.
Overall, Worth the Risk is a heartwarming, feel-good read that will leave you with a smile. If you’re looking for a romance that feels like a warm hug, this one’s worth picking up.
I loved the supportive small town, the quirky characters, the funny moments.. it was really just so charming. There wasn't much angst besides the characters needing to get out of their own way. Which didn't take too much, just a few conversations.
I felt for Winnie and I have definitely done an anxiety spiral a time or two myself, so I really resonated with her. I loved Rhett and how determined he was to finally get his chance with Winnie. They both have been letting life get in the way but now that Rhett is back in town to stay, he's ready to make his move.
I think this book is perfect if you like Small Town, girl/boy next door romances. It will have you smiling and make your heart light. I also think this was very well done for being a debut novel.
This was a sweet, closed-door romance and I had a great time. I will say, there was no indication that this would be closed-door before starting it and I did go back and make sure I didn't miss anything. I don't care if it makes me seem like a horny girl, but if I don't know ahead of time, I feel let down when the door closes in my face. It's just how I feel.
I'd rather know either way, so I can set my expectations. So here's me, letting other readers know. I know some of my friends DO want closed door romance reads, so here's one just for you, my dears!
4 stars
*Thank you to Yours Truly PR and the author for an ARC.*
i love a cutsie little small town romance! rhett was the sweetest man ever & i loved how well he took care of winnie 🥹 winnie struggles with anxiety & i felt like i could relate with how she was feeling at times
This was my first time reading anything by this author, and I loved it! It was such a cute, quick read in a beautiful setting, and the whole found family vibe just made it even more heartwarming. I enjoyed the supportive small-town feel, all the characters, and the funny moments sprinkled throughout.
Winnie and Rhett have known each other since they were teens. After her parents tragically passed away, she and her brother ended up living with their uncle in a small town. Her brother became Rhett's best friend, and she always tagged along. Winnie had a crush on Rhett, but her anxiety got in the way of having a real relationship. Fast forward to now—Winnie runs a successful bakery, and Rhett, who used to be a pro hockey player until an injury sidelined him, is back in his hometown to coach at a local high school. Plus, he wants to finally pursue a relationship with Winnie!
Winnie is a strong, independent woman with a heart of gold. She's always putting other people’s feelings ahead of her own. Ever since her parents passed away, she’s been dealing with some serious anxiety about losing the people she loves, which is why she struggles to open up and hasn’t been able to have any long-term relationships. I connect with her character—she's got dreams of growing her bakery, wanting to build her little cottage, and battling anxiety. Then there’s Rhett, the golden retriever MMC with a big heart. I love how determined he is to win Winnie over. He has so many cute and swoon-worthy moments trying to convince her to give him a chance. Their banter and flirty exchanges are just adorable.
Overall, it’s such a sweet and charming read. The found family vibe in the book is super heartwarming. There’s no spice at all, just some kisses. So, if you're into a closed-door romance with a lighthearted story packed with swoon-worthy and sweet moments, plus lovely characters, then this one’s definitely for you!
ARC REVIEW: Thank you so much to yours truly PR for this arc. This was such a fun, lighthearted romance. I am a huge fan of small town romances, Winnie and Rhett completely stole my heart. I love that this book had really great representation for anxiety, the way that Rhett would take care of Winnie and be there for her and supported her was swoon worthy. The book feels so relatable for so many different reasons.
I think that this book offered so many sweet, cute moments secret tattoos, (when Winnie‘s secret tattoo was revealed, I squealed. I was so excited it melted my heart.) This was definitely a sweet, easy, feel good romance. It is closed door, so if you aren’t interested in spice, but a really great romance then this book would be perfect for you.
I think that if you love a good second chance romance with mutual pining, a MMC that is so sweet and kind, and FMC that is witty and funny, but also struggles with real life emotions, such as anxiety this book would be great for you. I loved that the tropes are brother best friend, a golden retriever MMC, laugh out loud banter, and of course small town romance.
I thought I’d start my early thanksgiving break with a bang 💥 This was a very silly sweet book that gave me the dopamine hit I was needing and combing that with sleeping in and staying in bed just made it all the better!
A sweet, small town romance! I’ve spent a lot of time in the town of Silverthorne & I loved getting to imagine this little romance taking place there 🥹
Second chance romance Baker x Former NHL hockey player Reformed playboy Dual POV Forced proximity We’re neighbors!!
idk what happened to my review or why this got switched to not read but uggg. anyways, this was a sweet romance of second chances in an idyllic small, mountain town. it's closed door with lots of swooning and sweetness and the perfect book to feel good with. there's some adhd rep, grief rep, and a lot of dream worthy characters.
Thank you so much Truly Yours PR and Bea Borges for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a debut novel from Bea Borges. If you know me, if it's a small town romance, I'm going to read and love it.
Worth the Risk stars Winnie, an anxious (and clumsy) bakery owner who has made great strides to be a successful business owner and owns the cutest cottage. Little does she know, the guy who broke her heart seven years ago is going to be her new neighbour. Rhett is a newly-retired professional hockey player moving back to his hometown to coach the high school hockey team. He has been pining for Winnie for a long time, and is looking to get his happily-ever-after with the one that got away.
Winnie is ooey-gooey goodness (like her cinnamon rolls) with a big heart. She goes above and beyond to help her community. I always appreciate the anxiety representation as an anxious person myself. Rhett is the most normal MMC I have read in a bit. He has slight jealous tendencies in the beginning, but he becomes more confident in his relationship with Winnie as time goes on. His hockey injury isn't a big part of the story which I kind of liked.
The spice is very minimal, the majority of it being closed-door. It's not a deterrent for me, and would be really suitable for someone that doesn't love a lot of spice in their romance authors.
I am so glad I got to read this book and provide a review. Bea Borges is definitely added to my roster of authors to keep reading. This warm and fuzzy romance gets two thumbs up from me!
Let's just say this book made me fall in love with Small Town Romance. 🥲💜
Winnie and Rhett just melted my heart 💜
This book just made my heart swoon. I couldn't stop smiling while reading. There were moments I teared up just reading about Winnie & Rhett. Emotional rollercoaster while reading but in the best way.
The mutual pinning, the banter and just the genuine love between these two characters just made me so happy. I mean smiling while reading the whole time!
One of my favorite parts of the book would definitely be the anxiety represention we get to see in the book. I could tell how important it was for Bea by just how it was beautifully written REAL & RAW. I could feel for Winnie and understand how she felt. I also loved the support she was given from her family and friends. It was so relatable and I really appreciated that it in the book.
I really enjoyed this book & for this to be a debut book, Bea definitely hit it out the park. I usually don't read much small-town romances but this one really made me fall in love with a little mountain town called Silverthrone.
Let's just say I was sad when it was over. 🥹

This was cute, short & sweet. Winnie & Rhett were both very likable characters & I definitely related to some of Winnie’s internal struggles when her anxiety would take over. To be honest, Rhett was a bit boring in my opinion. He was way too sweet & agreeable & although I love an mmc with golden retriever energy, he was almost a bit too much. I also wished there had been more tension between them, more of a build up to that moment where they finally decided to cross the line. Everything just felt a bit too simple in my opinion.
This was very well written though, it definitely didn’t read as a debut novel. I would still recommend this if you’re looking for a quick read with sweet small town romance & enjoyable characters! Thank you to Truly Yours PR for the ARC! This is my honest opinion 🖤
"Worth the Risk" by Becca Borges is a solid 4-star read for me. It's the perfect end-of-summer, closed-door romance. If you're a fan of small-town settings and the brother's best friend trope, you'll love this story!
The book centers around Rhett and Winnie, childhood friends who reconnect in their 30s. Rhett, an ex-NHL player, returns to his hometown of Silverthorne to coach the high school hockey team. Winnie, the owner of the local bakery, finds herself crossing paths with Rhett, rekindling old feelings between them.
Key tropes featured in this book include: * Small Town * Anxiety Representation * Golden Retriever Male Main Character * Brother's Best Friend * Ex-Hockey Player * Baker * Miscommunication * End of Summer Romance
I thoroughly enjoyed following Rhett and Winnie's journey. If you're in the mood for a romance that will give you all the feels, I highly recommend picking this one up.
Such a sweet romance! This felt very cozy in a way? Like there isn't an abundance of plot, it really is just a romance haha. I think we could've had a bit more plot, because let's be real, all the back and forth was ridiculous, but above all, these two were just so sweet 🥺🥺 I saw so much of myself in Winnie and Rhett is just an absolute dream man. So good for a debut and I've already read book two so I can say that it's just getting better.
3 ⭐ - This is a cute small town romance with second chance & brother's best friend tropes. If you are looking for a to-the-point, sweet, fluffy love story I think you'll love this. I loved that Winnie is a hot mess, anxious express and is still doing hard things like running a successful business. I loved Rhett's golden retriever energy towards Winnie but would've liked a bit more from him.
This is very low/no stakes so again, if that's your vibe you will love this. Personally, I like a little more drama. Things worked out a little too simply and quickly for my liking. This was such a super short read and I feel like it could have benefited from an additional 100-150 pages providing some background/history (for the second chance romance) and a little drama (for the brothers best friend trope).
I would absolutely read more from this author and look forward to seeing her growth, and what's next in Silverhorne ❤
*Thank you to the author & trulyyourspr for providing an eARC. This review contains my honest thoughts and opinions*
this book caught my eye because of its cover, i read the blurb and instantly thought “oh this is right up my alley” and then i started reading…”uhhhhggg”
i was so bored, so so bored and it wasn’t giving me anything. it just fell very flat for me and i did not have fun. i don’t even want to know how this ends.
Winnie and Rhett 🥺🥺🥺 never thought I’d be into hockey players but im dying for more now🥵 Such a cutesy small town, feel-good romance!!
Also, the way I immediately needed a cinnamon bun after reading this.
Thank you Yours Truly PR and Bea for the arc!! Worth the Risk comes out June 11th and is a must read if you love brothers best friend, small town, hockey players, or secret tattoo tropes 💫
As a Colorado girly you know I had to read this book!
Winnie Parker is an entrepreneur in Silverton and just opened her own bakery. And she’s definitely not still secretly pining over her brothers best friend. Who happens to be an exceedingly attractive pro hockey player. Well at least he was.
Rhett Holloway had it all. Almost. The looks, the career, and women. Just not the one he wanted. When a career ending injury takes him out, he decides to move back home and coach his high school hockey team. And also maybe try to get the girl of his dreams back. EVEN if she is his best friends little sister and totally off limits..
What a sweet book! I loved it. Rhett and Winnie were so cute. I hope Cole and Winnie's bestie get a book. I loved the tight-knight family aspect of this book.
What a cute love story!! I loved both main characters! Winnie is so relatable with her anxiety struggles. Rhett was so protective, caring, and loving.
I love how the brothers best friend trope was handled. It seemed very mature and reasonable compared to some other stories with the same trope.

Worth The Risk by Bea Borges is a perfect fit for readers who adore swoony, second-chance romances infused with humor and heartfelt connections, and are looking for a story that explores the themes of love, vulnerability, and taking risks to find true happiness.
Winslow “Winnie” Parker, has spent the last several years mastering pastry arts and has just opened the town’s new favorite bakery. She is struggling in the dating world knowing the relationships she enters all have an expiration date. She’s only ever been swept off her feet once and it ended in heartbreak. So when Rhett Holloway the only guy to ever sweep her off her feet returns to town Winnie is filled with conflicting feelings. There are so many things she would be risking if she were to fall in love.
Rhett Holloway on the other hand has just ended his career in the NHL with an injury and has returned home to take a job as the high school’s hockey coach. He isn’t interested in continuing his playboy reputation and he’s home to stay. The only thing he’s missing is the girl he let slip away 8 years prior. No matter how hard Winnie tries to push him away and convince herself that this could only end badly, Rhett is willing to do what ever it takes to win her heart again.
Winnie struggles with anxiety and self doubt. She tries to mask it with whit, humor, and sarcasm. She believes she’s just “too much” and that her struggles are more than any man is going to be willing to deal with.
Rhett Holloway is the definition of a golden retriever. He is always thinking of ways to take care of Winnie and nothing makes him happier than doing just that.
This is a charming second chance, small town romance. It is full of witty banter and sweet moments. Winnie immediately won me over with her heart and sarcasm. She’s a deep thinker and her anxious mind is relatable. Rhett is simply the greatest. He’s everything you want and everything your loved ones want for you. He understands and loves Winnie for all that she is. He will never stop trying to take care of her and shows it in the little things he does (keeps a bag of snacks for her?!?). I adored their playful yet tender relationship. Winnie tried to fight her feelings and I just kept rooting for Rhett, but also for Winnie, to accept that she could have the love she desired. Worth the Risk was a sweet treat that I savored. I can’t wait to see what comes next in the series.
The anxiety representation in Worth the Risk is spot on. Bea really nailed the inner workings and thoughts of an anxious mind. Winnie’s inner dialogue is something so many people struggling to find love while dealing with anxiety will be able to relate to.

Thank you Bea Borges and Yours Truly PR for the opportunity to read this ARC 💛
3.25 stars! Thank you to Truly Yours PR & the author for an ARC of this debut novel. These are my honest thoughts!
Worth the Risk is a second chance romance about Winnie and her older brother's bff/her former summer fling, Rhett. The story premise and the characters were great! I particularly enjoyed how much the characters are forced to be together (because Winnie is close with Rhett's family/Rhett's close with Winnie's brother), and then how often Rhett seeks Winnie out to spend time with her.
Read this if you love... - Small towns - Brother's Best Friend - Second Chance - Mental Health Rep - Former NHL hockey players turned high school coaches - Home renovations - Found family vibes (Winnie's parents died when she was younger) - Hints at books to come... - Fade to black/semi-closed door - making out but nothing further
Things I really enjoyed: - Rhett's pursuit of Winnie from the minute he comes back to town - Winnie and her awareness of her anxiety, but also Rhett's awareness of her anxiety - The Winnie snack bag (: - Both Rhett and Winnie's support of their community in their respective jobs; Winnie saying yes to clients in her bakery, Rhett involving his high school hockey players in community outreach - Rhett's family - The small town setting in Colorado - I kind of want to move there! - Winnie's house and the renovations and the way Rhett shows up there for her - Rhett showing up for Winnie when she has a migraine - as someone with migraines (I actually had one for the last 24 hours), it's always sweet to see this care and concern play out on page! - All the sweets that come with
This might've just been a me-thing, and also because I know ARCs are still works-in-progress, so I just need to make a small note to say: the dialogue needed a bit more editing for my own personal tastes. I strongly dislike when an author doesn't attribute lines of dialogue to characters, but will put a line of dialogue from her perspective and then the immediate sentence is something like, "He winked at me." Who is talking? Why is his winking at her in HER line of dialogue? A bit of the dialogue also became repetitive by the end, and I needed just a little more tension built, drama, or distance between the characters. Things just.... magically came out and then everything was resolved. I like a little more pining or tension between my characters before the stuff all comes together.
This is why my rating is a 3.25. With some further editing and fleshing out of the story, this book has solid bones and could have easily become a 4 star read for me (4 star=really liked). If these things don't bug you like they bug me, I definitely recommend you pick up this book!
I'm so excited to see what and who comes next in this universe from Bea!
she’s a doozy and not in a good way. the dedication page, 5 ⭐️s and every subsequent page was like we lost 1/200th of a star until we got to 2.5/5 stars.
Winnie is annoying. She is TiNy and AnXiOuS and GiRl BoSs and she’s too good to exist and she loves everyone. Especially Rhett, her brothers best friend, and worlds most boring man. He has tattoos, is an ex-NHL player and most importantly, he’s very boring. But don’t worry, she is also boring. But she has a tiger tattoo and curly hair, so she is ✨exotic✨
They are exceptionally boring together. He carries her tiny frame up her tiny stairs in her tiny cottage to her tiny bed where he looks FEE FIII FOOO FUM BIG because he’s BIG and MANLY and LARGE. she is very happy about this. She doesn’t have many complex thoughts besides being anxious, happy or so good and in love with live laugh love girl boss, that it’s easy to follow the exceptionally boring progress of this exceptionally boring couple. The couple embodiment of like, saltines. They fall in love in <.002 seconds because Winifred, tells Rhododendron that she hates him because he texted her mean stuff when she showed up two years ago to confess her undying love and he responds “lol that wasn’t me that was my mean ex Lacey” and Wilder Coyote says “omg yay” and they embrace. It’s a boring embrace and they kiss boring too.
Her brother, the 🤟wild child🤘🏻 named Colt who is obviously in love with Winnie’s 🔥firey 🔥 best friend doctor, Marigold, hits his head while rafting and repeats himself four times. But don’t worry. He only has a mild concussion, so logically, Winnie panics. She ignores boring hockey boyfriend for 6 days. He decides the best way to win her heart is to tell the local newspaper he loves her and have it hand delivered by his mom. She shows up to his FIRST EVER HOCKEY COACH HOCKEY GAME and they embrace. But not before she falls on the ice because not only is she tiny and exotic, she’s also clumsy. How charming. Boring hockey boyfriend thinks her clumsiness is so charming. Har de har.
Let’s just be done with this plot line, k? We hate simple, boring, stupid, one note, lame ass women in these books.
This fucking microwave rice packet woman has a fern tattoo covering up a tattoo of hockey sticks she got for the human male version of the feeling you get when you open a popsicle and it’s orange instead of red? Puh-lease.
Thank you to Truly Yours PR and Bea Borges for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book had all the makings to be great, but in the end it just fell a bit flat for me. I loved the characters, but struggled to make it through the dialogue. While at times the writing *could* be great, it mostly just…wasn’t a majority of the time, unfortunately.
I also was a bit bored. I enjoyed the setting and the idea of the main characters, but ultimately not a lot happened. I liked the anxiety representation, but felt like it was used to force a completely unnecessary almost third act breakup.
Lastly, and YES, I realize this is an ARC and not the final copy, so NO this did not factor into my rating—but the amount of errors in this book did, at the end of the day, take away largely from the reading experience, sadly. It was actually hard to understand who was talking in the dialogue throughout the entire book because of the way the words were placed and the punctuation was used. So, no, I did not use this as a factor for rating, but just wanted to mention that it was a problem for me as the reader as hard as I tried to overlook it.
Thank you Truly Yours PR for the ARC copy. All opinions are my own.
This book had potential to be such a fun romance story. I had high hopes for this ARC when I started it but it was a flop for me.
The plot was weak. It was definitely a character driven story but not in a way that kept it interesting. The characters had very little depth and most were too perfect with very few flaws. The only character that seemed to have a “flaw” was Winnie, the FMC. Her “flaw” (trauma is not a flaw, but it was the only thing that made her imperfect as a character) had to do with her trauma of losing her parents young. Personally, I didn’t like the way her trauma was used and portrayed.
I really liked Winnie and Rhett as a couple, but the story development stunted my enjoyment of them snd their love story.
Also, nobody put Winnie in therapy after losing her parents so young? That would give any child trauma, but to be debilitated by it into adulthood seems like the adults in her life failed her.
I wish I liked this book more, I really wanted to and I really tried to.
