Home with God: Our Union with Christ

Rate this book
What if we’ve missed the most wonderful truth about salvation?

That you and I were created to live at home with God. Not just in some far future heavenly world. But right now.

You and I are invited to live at home with God in Christ Jesus. This invitation is called “union with Christ.” And it is one of the most unbelievable and overlooked realities of Christian salvation.

In this book, Kyle Worley (pastor, author, and host of the “Knowing Faith Podcast”) guides readers along the story of Scripture to help them understand that this invitation into life with God in Christ is not only a key part of the Bible’s entire message, but also, the primary belief of Christian salvation. In Home with God, you will discover how the Christian’s union with Christ creates a new me, a new we, and a new way of living in and living out God’s story. Wisdom is found in knowing God and knowing ourselves.

Home with God: An Invitation into Union with Christ is a simple and engaging introduction to this wonderful truth. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter for reflection, it is a great resource for both individual reflection and small group discussion.

Generation-defining artists from Simon & Garfunkel to Michael Bublé to Sandy Cheeks have sung longingly about our collective desire to go back home. When we are kids, our home is our refuge: our shelter of exploration within the bounds of safety. Then as Teenagers, our home turns into our prison: the place from which we must escape to make our way in the world. So, we set out on our grand adventure, taking 'one more step' away from home and from that point on, there might be armies to fight and treasures to be won, but from that first step away from the Shire, our hearts long to return 'back again.' We all long for the place where we can truly rest.

We might seek to find our sense of home through romance, or achievement, love of country, or a love of a team, but no matter how hard we try, nothing seems to quite scratch the itch. Our hearts are restless until they find rest their in God. In "Home with God: Our Union with Christ," my friend Kyle Worley invites us to take our shoes off and stay awhile as we find our rest in our home with God.

Like Kyle, I lived much of my Christian life under the assumption that I needed to get Christ to live in me. But the good news about our union with Christ is not that we invite Jesus to live in our hearts, but that He invites us into His! We are united to Christ with all of the benefits that come with it. As Kyle says, our union with Christ creates a new me, a new we, and a new way. "Union with Christ is the believer's identification, incorporation, and participation in [the whole story] of the Son of God, Jesus Christ."

If the doctrine of union with Christ was itself a home, Kyle's book would be like the foyer. Inviting and accessible: you can see the much of the layout of the house from there. For anyone new to union, this is the place to start. And, as you begin to tour the rest of the house, you will find Rankin Wilbourne in the Living Room, Kevin Vanhoozer and Con Campbell in the study, and John Calvin at the hearth. Over time, I can only hope that the doorbell will continue to ring as more Christians come to the door to discover the kind of home that they have always longed for, and the home that is theirs in Christ Jesus.

I first heard Kyle discuss union with Christ on his podcast, Knowing Faith. The episode was incredibly insightful and encouraging, giving me a lot to dwell on regarding salvation and what it means to be in Christ.

Kyle makes the doctrine of union with Christ both meaningful and accessible. He doesn’t oversimplify the material but raises the reader to a deeper understanding. He takes complex theological ideas and explains them clearly.

If you want to deepen your understanding of what it means to be “in Christ” and gain a fuller grasp of your salvation, then this book is for you.

Home with God is an excellent choice for personal reading, but it would also work wonderfully for a book club. The audiobook version is equally enjoyable, with Kyle Worley himself narrating the book. (If you’re familiar with the Knowing Faith podcast, the audiobook will feel like an extended episode!)

I highly recommend Home with God and I think you’ll be truly blessed by it.

Disclosure: I’m grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Home with God; all words and reviews are my own. (I’ve actually already gifted this book twice, if that tells you how much I appreciated it.)

This is maybe the fourth or fifth time I have started a review exactly this way: I absolutely loved the ideas in this book, but it was not the most riveting read because it was written by one of the hosts of Knowing Faith Podcast, which I have probably listened to for 60-90 minutes a day for nearly a year.

So, I almost want to give this book 4 stars because the experience of reading it did not draw me in and blow me away quite like most 5 star books do. However, the doctrine of “union with Christ”, which is the focus of this book, has been so incredibly beautiful, illuminating, and good for me to dive into over the last year that I have to give this book 5 stars just so that other Christians might read it.

This was a very beautiful look into the book of Ephesians and what making our home in Christ is, how this happens, and what it produces. He really hits at the beautiful life lived in Christ in our already, not yet place. So different than the “ask Jesus into your heart so you don’t burn in hell message” that was preached often out of fear. A more full look into a life lived with Christ.

Reading Kyle Worley’s, Home with God felt like being invited into something both simple and profound. If you’ve ever struggled to understand what it means to be united with Christ, this very accessible book makes it clear, simple, and altogether beautiful.

My favorite part was the section on adoption. As a transracial adoptee, this chapter completely wrecked me, especially as I’m processing the recent loss of my father. The fact that Worley is himself an adoptive dad made this even more meaningful. There’s a unique connection here because both adoptees and adoptive parents understand the picture of God’s adoption in Christ in a way that is deeply tangible. We don’t just read it as an illustration, we live it.

Worley writes, “We, all of us, are born into this world as spiritual orphans. But we don't have to remain there. God has created a new family in Christ Jesus and by grace through faith in Christ, we can be adopted into this new family...none of us by nature belong to the family of God, but in the act of adoption, we are welcomed by grace and love into God's family.”

Who understands this better than us? In the middle of my grief, this truth has been an anchor. Adoption isn’t just an idea to me. It’s the story God has written into my life. What a gift of His kindness to let me glimpse His heart in such a personal way. In Christ, I can rest knowing I am never without a Father and never without a home.

A compelling primer on one of the most underappreciated yet relevant doctrines: union with Christ. Salvation is not about asking Jesus in to our hearts, but about the glorious possibility of being in Christ. Worley shows how this doctrine affects how we pray, how we read Scripture, how we view the local gathering of believers, how we work, and more. Highly accessible while maintaining theological depth.

Psalm 16:11

“You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

In Christ this is TRUE for us here and now, and for our future. “We are living looking backwards and forwards” love this concept and living hope that Christ has for us IN Himself!

An interesting reading about home with a main focus on passages from the New Testament. It is one of the few contemporary books that treats the subject of home theologically.

The book has two parts: the story of home with God and the doctrine of home with God. The challenge is that the bible is not a doctrine book but this is his only source for the „doctrine part“. There are only a few exceptions where he draws on tradition. And when he does, he only quotes calvin. A bit one-sided for my taste.

I also miss the political component. What does it mean, that Gods new world/heaven is my final home, not Texas? (In this context, I find it somewhat disconcerting that he emphasized several times how great he think Texas is.) What is with the nationalistic tendencies that are increasingly prominent in us-american evangelicalism? Worley is silent on all of these questions.

Nonetheless, an interesting book, especially if one is interested in the theoretical perspectives of Romans and Ephesias.

Helpful meditations on union with Christ. Worley set the tone from the beginning of the book reframing his own salvation not as "asking Jesus into my heart" but as "something far more wonderful that had occurred: God welcomed me into His home in Christ Jesus." I also appreciated his definition of union: "Union with Christ is the believer’s identification, incorporation, and participation in and with the life, death, resurrection, ascension, and heavenly session of the Son of God, Jesus Christ." He goes on to develop this by talking about the new me, we, way, and being set on the adventure of life of abiding in Christ.

Lots of Scripture. Lots of helpful example and illustrations. Has been encouraging for my soul personally. Plan to use this in working through and teaching on issues of identity with others.

Y'all, I finally listened to my first theology audiobook. I'm slowly strengthening my auditory listening skills, and even took notes!

It was easy though, because Kyle Worley read aloud his new book, Home With God: Our Union With Christ, with gentle enthusiasm. He truly is passionate about this topic, and while being conversational, he dove deep into many doctrines about Christ and our union with him.

It was a joy to hear about all that is true of us because of our union with Christ. Whether you are a new or older believer, this is an excellent book to read to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of what our salvation means. I will definitely add this to our spiritual formation schedule.

An accessible introduction to the doctrine of union with Christ. The Biblical theology of home in the first half of the book was probably my favorite part, but looking at how this doctrine practically applies to our life in the “already and not yet” was an encouragement my heart needed.

Really enjoyed it. Think it is a great start to one of the main threads (if not the main thread) of the story of Scripture. Approachable and easy to read. Getting this in the Ridge camp store for staff and campers!

This book was a joy to read. It has helped me think deeper about what being in Christ means. It is easy to understand and a pleasurable read. But will take what I have learned and lean in to the hope of being in Christ.

Kyle, if you are reading this, thank you for following God’s call and starting Knowing Faith. It has deepened my walk and made me a better theologian. I am forever thankful.

I read this one twice. Once earlier this year and then listened to the audiobook for our churches book club. Kyle has gifted me as a pastor with a stellar resource. Much of what is written on Union with Christ feels abstract and heady. This is a deeply pastoral book that walks you through the profound implications of this essential doctrine. The threefold breakdown of a, new me, new we, and a new way is gold. So many great quotes in this, but I find myself returning to this: "We are not creatures made of forgiving love; we are creatures made of delighting love who are in need of forgiving love that we may once again enjoy the delight of fellowship with God." Such a simple truth, yet so deeply profound in the way we view the imago dei and the blessedness of our Triune God in creating us out of overflow. This is a fabulous book that will bless many.

5 Rating. Loved.

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this book. I found myself moved quite a bit as the author did a great job of touching upon key elemnts of the Gospel. It was spoken in a very reformed perspective which I really appreciated. Felt like he touched upon many of the key topics we teach in our membership class from definition of faith/grace, double imputation, propitiation, active/passive work of Christ, union vs communion in Christ, "home" in the OT and NT, "already but not yet" vs "here and now, and what it means to walk with Christ in us. Really appreciated that he touched upon the topic of Jesus as our LORD, not just a Savior. Extra bonus points to the author for touching upon two of my favorite passages/verses from Romans 8 and Hebrews 11.

This book is so thoughtfully put together to give Christians a new way to see what it means to be in union with Christ. The piece that sticks with me most is knowing we can never be separated or change our union with Christ — good days and bad — but we can deepen our communion with him and how deeply we can experience life with Christ. This book is filled with scripture reference. I also love that the content is easy to follow whether you’re a new believer or a seasoned one. Great work, Kyle and thank you for doing an audio version of your book!

3.5.
Home with God is a fairly good book on an incredible subject. I was very pleased that Worley was able to keep this topic on a fairly relate-able and understandable level. If you are not familiar with the idea of Union with Christ this book may blow open a world of spiritual riches to you.

By the second half of the book though it started to feel like we had lost some steam and the plot a bit (this the 3.5 rating.) but overall this topic is so under emphasized, so often missed that I would gladly recommend this book to any Christian.

I have heard Kyle talk about union with Christ on the Knowing Faith podcast, but I loved reading it in book form. The idea of union vs communion was so helpful and has had me contemplating the ways that I damage my communion with God and how I can go further up and further into a relationship with Christ, who is the entire point of Heaven. Kyle’s enthusiasm for this topic shines through the entire book. This book is so well done.

There are so many fabulous takeaways from this book, but you are mostly left with the invitation to join God in Jesus the way He clearly designed the relationship to be throughout Scripture. I am left wanting a deeper relationship with Christ and wanting to give my brother in Christ Kyle a hug for writing a book that is so meaningful and practical to our everyday walk.

so good!

Union with Christ has always been a really abstract concept for me. My eyes have been opened! I loved how this book walked me through scriptures (don’t skip any of them!) and clearly explained how Union with Christ affects every aspect of our Christian walk love love love. It is a must read.

As Kyle says, “I can’t write the power of union with Christ into your heart” and he’s right, he didn’t write it into my heart. But he did remind me of a sacred truth that encouraged me deeply. We are united with Christ and there is so much beauty so much hope and so much comfort to find in that fact.

I love Union with Christ. (emphatic period)
this is a very accessible and beneficial encouragement summary of this key doctrine. A far more digestible read than Owen's Communion with God (and also less Song of Songs references), but covering many of the same themes, scoped for the modern reader.

This was my ATL-MSP airplane read.
