I have a story to tell you… I shall start at the breaking of the Tempest, where history begins…
READ IT BECAUSE
Follow the tumultuous saga of the Mortal Realms in a single volume – from the battles against the forces of Chaos, through the Soul Wars against the hordes of Nagash, to the chosen warriors of Sigmar fighting in the Era of the Beast.
THE STORY
The Mortal Realms are lost.
From the ashes of the World-that-Was, the God-King Sigmar plucks from oblivion the souls of warriors that die in his name, and on the Anvil of Apotheosis reforges them anew. These brave but damaged Stormcast Eternals face near-insurmountable odds to bring Sigmar’s light back to the Mortal Realms, and reclaim them from the grasp of the ascendant Ruinous Powers of Chaos.
The Gates of Azyr (Novella) by Chris Wraight Soul Wars (Novel) by Josh Reynolds Dominion (Novel) by Darius Hinks
so dull honestly just watch a YouTube video about AOS lore. GWs continued failure to make AOS make sense and interesting is mind blowing when you compare it to old Warhammer fantasy and all of 40ks lore
one of 2 books I can't finish and will reduce my skaventide book to never opened I think
This book contains three stories. The first two stories, written by Chris Wraight and Josh Reynolds are enjoyable. They each have the same issue with excessive filtering but this is fine for the most part.
The third and last story is written by Darius Hinks. This story I could not finish due to glaring issues with the text. I stopped reading at page 472 which is only eight chapters deep into the last story of the book. These are, in my opinion, the most obvious issues up until this point:
- Inappropriate amount of telling, a lot of which is filtering.
- Characters have no substance other than name, title and one or two basic attributes.
- Character proficiency is largely something you are told about instead of shown.
- Characters flip flop between emotional states.
- There is dialogue that serves no purpose, possibly intended for character development but failing to do so.
- The world around the characters lacks weight and substance due to a lack of well chosen descriptors when characters observe and move through the world.
How GW decided this specific story was ready for publishing is puzzling. It is disappointing my time with an otherwise enjoyable book is ending this way.
As an intro to AoS, I don't know what could be better. 2 novels and a novella, really sets the tone for what is undoubtedly one of the most epic fantasy universes.
I'm really not sure which of the 3 was my favorite. Soul Wars of course has Nagash, which is a big plus.
The Characters in Dominion are quite good, and the plot, though straightforward, is a thrilling survival story of a crusade in the nightmarish Wildlands of Ghur.
Reminiscent of some of the best sci-fi and fantasy, albeit written a bit conservatively in order to please the masses. There is nothing wrong with tight and simple prose, though I prefer more ambitious and unique styles. What these stories lack in prose they make up for in setting and good pacing.
I may have already ordered another 5 books because of how much I enjoyed these.
A great introduction into the Age of Sigmar. I really loved Realmgate and liked Soul Wars very much. The stories were strong introductions into a new world and their factions. Interesting characters and dynamics. Dominion was okay. I loved the build up of the Kruleboyz but apart from that the it felt not as lively in terms of world building as the other two stories. Overall the book is still a great read and an amazing introduction into AoS
This is a 4.5 It took a while to get in to, but as the stories got going they were good. I think it was also partially my fault for not knowing anything about AoS before this but it was a little jarring going from 40k to AoS, enjoyable either way!
