The Outrider, Bonner, is talked into riding into the Slave States to find a cache of gas that would set them up for a time. Him and his friends run into Les Habitants, a gang of French Canadians who help out. All the while being chased by Leatherman and his cruel mutants and Stormers.
Lots more Road Warrior action to sink your teeth into. The silly cover does nothing to think that this is one of the better post-apocalyptic book series. Looks more like a reject from the Village People. Wonderful read.
I have only read this book once and enjoyed the continuing story from book one.
And as always:
As an artist I have thought about storyboarding this book, and creating some sort of graphic novel just as a labor of love not for money.
I can even fantasize myself as the hero of this book, playing it out as if I were some sort of action hero movie star.
Through the technology of online purchases I was able to obtain all five books from this series.
I like to binge watch a series as much as anyone, but I also like to binge read a series that I enjoy.
I was thoroughly entertained with this story line and the way the author presented it, I take the premise at face value and do not nit-pick any details.
I was able to vicariously live out this post apocalyptic adventure series, not that it was so richly written but because it gave me an opportunity to flesh out and watch with my mind’s eye as I was transported to a time when violent survival ruled the continent.
These are just simple shoot-em-up books, but they are the best shoot-em-up books of their time.
In this installment, Bonner and his friends head to the Slave States looking for a large cache of prewar gasoline. They team up with a group of French Canadians who have come south looking for winter supplies and to fight Slave State stormtroopers. They create much havoc across post-apocalyptic Pennsylvania. Leather, the dictator-thug of the Slave States, is out looking for the gas with his entourage. He leaves a trail of death and misery behind him.
Fire and Ice has less story and more fighting than the previous book. Bonner is less of a hero and more of an antihero on a treasure hunt. This book is very exciting. It will hold you in suspense thru the car chases, the train chases, and the gunfights.
This book also continues and even deepens the fatalistic tone and themes of the previous one. More of Bonner's friends die violently, there is much collateral damage, Bonner is faced with difficult moral dilemmas and just walks away without dealing with them. Fire and Ice deals with a lot of subjects that will make you feel uncomfortable. It will also make you grateful that you live in a functioning society.
I'm not going to try to convince anybody that this is great literature, or even good literature, because it is not. It is, however, more than what it appears to be.
Fire and Ice book #2 in the outrider series picks up where book 1 left off. Our hero, Bonner the Outrider is still on the hunt for his old friend now nemesis, Leather.
Fire and Ice is non stop action beginning to end, with new characters and old. The book is fast paced, and reads like your watching an 80s action movie. If you enjoyed the first book, you’re going to love the second.
Sure you could get by reading book 2 and not book one, but I would highly recommend reading the first book before diving into book two, to gain an appreciation for the returning characters.
Overall I enjoyed book 2 way more than book one, not saying book one was bad, but fire and ice was just that good! And easy five stars, so far The Outrider series has been a pleasure to read!
The second Outrider book is everything the first one was: Cool cars, crazy action, a Mad Max pastiche setting and most importantly no zombies! Fire and Ice is a bit more simple story wise than the first book, basically Bonner is going on a run to find gaz and get payback on Leatherman at the same time. We have less world-building and more straight-forward action, plus we meet another band of characters (from French speaking Canada no-less) who are friends with Bonner and help him along the way. A great continuation of the series with more of the fun and over-the-top characters that we come to expect from this Mad Max look-a-like.
