Preread for AO Year 7. Was tedious at times, but that is probably more a reflection of me than the work. It was a very good complement to Churchill's Birth of Britain, and there were some great insights into the character of King Alfred from a contemporary of his. It was rather obvious that Asser greatly admired and loved the king, and probably his glowing account of Alfred's life was biased.
