Reverse Rivalry

Rate this book
"Your writing is just MIND-BLOWING! While reading your book “Reverse Rivalry”, I was like “oh!!! This is what I always wanted to read! Perfect enemies-to-lovers trope story!!! Totally my type of story!!! I LOVE IT!” - silver-butterfly.

Skylar Lain was a menace. Jale Kierson was a dumb jock.
They butted heads constantly without mercy to their wellbeings. Throw in fights, anger and visceral hate for each other. There's no doubt about it. They loathed each other with every ounce of their souls, but things escalated when they both ended up having to endure a punishment they would never have imagined.

Everyone knows, "where there's smoke, there's fire," so is the boiling hate between them just that hot and out of control or is there something more? Will Skylar and Jale destroy each other or will they finally learn to get along?

When I read enemies to lovers MM romance I want this intense, vicious hatred and this book really delivered that, if not even too much? The loathing to the point they wanted to kill another, they had vile disgust to each other.

Skylar was a psychopathic menace. Messed up in his head and broken for sure (a bit cliche unloved rich kid trope), he was pure evil. Sometimes I just want a truly bad character without traumatic past to justify his darkness. Skylar was quite a masochist, the sheer amount of body hits he got from Jale and just taking it.

At first Jale was just a sickening violent boy for me but as more was revealed, I felt sorry for him. He was good but weak and unfortunate? Despite all his rage, deep down he also thrived on this toxic shit they had. Skylar was a sicko for sure and his torment of Jale started to annoy me though.

I was curious to see how romance could ever happen between them. The build up to their first explosive kiss could have been a little longer to ramp up that sexual tension because it came up a bit too suddenly amidst all that raw hostility. Bi-awakening was good but I wished there was not secret pinning, maybe it wasn’t as active, sort of subconsciously repressed. When their first meeting was revealed, there was SOMETHING but Skylar was too young, only hate was a feeling he knew which led to unhealthy obsession but it was a twisted love underneath it all. Development of feelings wasn’t as organic for me.

Spice (nicely explicit) came up a bit too fast imo (straight to penetration). But seriously, I can’t believe I’m writing this but I kind of expected their sex to be prep-less since they have such pain kink (they don’t mind bruising each other until blood is pouring so a tearing ass should be up their alley).

And I don’t care how cruel and revolting stuff they did to each other but using girls as tools for revenge was unacceptable. Jale sleeping with Skylar’s girlfriend was a line crossed too far then Skylar trying to hook up with Jale’s sister was equally horrifying.

There was poor editing, grammar was questionable and spelling errors missed in proofreading, many dialogs were split as it was a discussion between two people when it was the same person speaking still. Also whiplash POV switch. This kept throwing me off so the book sort of lost my interest somehow (it was very long).

Best SMUT in the whole freaking world. The writing and dialogue style is unconventional, but that is even better because it feels like every mm book has the same writing style nowadays.
Come with an open mind, and you're going to love it

i really loved the story and the characters, but i struggled with the writing itself. i skimmed sections and i actually didn’t end up finishing all of the book because of the writing, even though liked the plot.

It wouldn't be fair to rate it. The story was entertaining but the author was unfamiliar with proper punctuation.

I don’t usually write reviews but..

DNF at 33% I tried I really did 😭

The beginning of Reverse Rivalry was actually a little promising. I LOVE enemies to lovers where they are FULLY going at it you don’t really see that in MM books it felt like actual hate, and they really were starting off strong… but why was Skylar just taking hits and not fighting back in the future?? Like hello?? I needed more back and forth lowkey I wish Skylar would fight but more with his fists and not his words lowkey 😩

I did like that they were actually going at it but then it just got… weird?? Hello?? Random dance instructor??? 😭 And them fucking on the dance mat was lowkey funny but not in a good way… also NOBODY talks like this some of it made me cringe and close out the book until I could read it again because I’m a sucker for enemies to lovers

The smut just wasn’t hitting for me. I literally started skipping it, like the first interaction I could get past the kiss? Fine. but like the dynamic could’ve been so much better for how much pain they have caused each other 💀

My thoughts on the characters:

Skylar — He seemed dark at first, which I liked. The whole past/vibe had potential, but his villain complex got kinda weird as the story went on. And I didn’t like how he just ruined Jale’s life and then it’s nothing other then that, just for JALE and seeing his pov was interesting you get this whole back story and plot then you get into his pov and it’s lackluster and you wonder where ur dark Skylar went, his possessiveness was alright but he could’ve been written better ??? 😐

Jale— I liked him more tbh. His anger, his goody-two-shoes act, and the fact that he beat the shit out of Skylar (as he should 😌). But outside of that… his character felt kinda empty and weak..and the sister complex, I don’t know what we where hoping for I kinda wish I saw more of the “steal ur woman” stuff happening and not the mentions of it.. could’ve been so good..? The Bi awakening for both came quick and kind of nasty.

This book had SO much potential but then turned into… a comedy?? 😭 Like maybe it gets better later, maybe the smut improves, but I got way too much secondhand embarrassment—I literally could NOT handle it.

The grammar got shit at times, the povs would like melt into each other and it was a hard read at some points.

It felt like it was trying to do everything enemies to lovers usually lacks… while also missing what enemies to lovers actually NEED?? I still cannot wrap my head around that dance scene 💀

What to expect:

* Hate to Love
* Childhood Hate
* Homophobia
* Hate Fuck
* Jealousy
* humor
* Random chaos 😭
* no lube/protection
* Rimming
* Hero x Villain
* Bullying

Idk… this was just a mess 😭 You could read it for a quick laugh or something, but yeah… not for me.

I've read chapter one and the first page of chapter two...

I promise you with my entire soul that there was no editor. I'm not talking about the flow of the text nor about the story nor about the strange wording, I'm talking about basic copyediting.

I highlighted 4 errors on the first page and a half of chapter two because upon finishing chapter one, I decided I needed to document this.

"The principal's office was a dreadful diabolical that Skylar hated to be subjected to..." - A dreadful diabolical what? You left out a word.

"...his hands were clenched.BIt amused..." - Nope, I didn't make a mistake, there really is a 'B' instead of a space.

"Skylar wasn't one to keep his mouth shut, worst, around the most honourable douche-bag of them all." - Why is the word 'worst' in there? What does this mean??

"...glaring with daggers that could kill in his dark blue eyes..." - The saying is 'looking/shooting/staring daggers at someone.' You do not glare with daggers in your eyes.

Also, someone needs to revoke the author's priviledge to use italics because I have no idea what she is trying to achieve with her use of them.
