Chicago Red Tails #3

Beyond the Game

Rate this book
I knocked up my sister's co-worker.

And I didn't even know her name. I know. This sounds really bad, but listen, I can explain.

To hockey fans, I'm known for my strength and skills on the ice. To women, I'm known for my talent and endurance in the bedroom.

So, when a beautiful woman introduces herself as Amanda Hugginkiss and tells me the only vacation regret she has is not hooking up with someone who could "rearrange her guts"—her words, not mine—who would I be to not give the pretty lady the happy ending she desires?

Amanda Hugginkiss, meet Ben Dover.

Yeah. It was like that, fake names and all. And dare I say, it was a climactic experience more thrilling than game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals.

After that night, I've done nothing but think about Amanda Hugginkiss. I miss her. I crave her. I'm desperate to experience that night with her again, but I have no way of knowing who she really is or how to find her.

Until she walked into my penthouse several months later with my sister…every bit as beautiful and very, very pregnant.

Beyond the Game is a steamy standalone hockey romance intended for mature listeners.

My biggest ick in this book that was distracting from the plot was Dex and his sister Rory’s dynamic. The dialogue was off and cringey (but that applied to everyone) but their dynamic felt like incest. It made me feel like the author has no idea how siblings interact. They were way too invested in one another’s sex lives, making jokes about her brothers dick, and him teasing her about washing his balls. It’s really distracting and alarming. Their dialogue read like “Step Bro” porn scripts. Especially since it’s mentioned a few times that Dex raised Rory.

Dex reacting like an asshole and then having literally one conversation with Charlee and Carissa and everything is resolved? It took him all of an hour to see the error of his ways. You could say he was blind sided by the pregnancy but the way he reacted and literally did not value anything Tatum had to say struck a chord.

We glossed over his parental trauma, he doesn’t grovel. Tatum forgives him so easily and it feels like he doesn’t have an original thought. His friends tell him he’s an ass and he agrees, they tell him to take care of her financially and he does it. They tell him the kid would be loved and suddenly he believes them. And he just reiterates the same sentiments to Tatum. And of a sudden he wants a kid and I guess he’s good with his trauma.

I feel like somehow we don’t get to really know either of the main leads. So much of Dax’s screen time is eaten up by his obnoxious friends and when he’s alone it’s a lot of telling us how he’s feeling and not showing us. The same with Tatum. When I was about halfway through this book I realized that I feel nothing for either character. You don’t know them, you know their situation. We gloss over Tatum’s divorce and dating history but as a person we don’t know her personality.

However if you can make to the last 1/5 of the book it’s nice. We finally get to see the characters fall for each other without the noise of everyone else. But we get so little time with them.

There’s also no real plot/climax nothing needs to be resolved. The secret pregnancy trope ends in the early half of the book and they’re just coasting. We already knew how both characters felt early on so it’s not monumental when they confess.

2.5 stars? ⭐️⭐️

Uhmmmm…. I was rlly excited for this book because I love this trope, however imo it was executed poorly. I don’t think the writing was good which threw off everything. I didn’t like the dialogue… it was lowkey cringe and extremely forced. I also hate it when authors make modern references or use trendy slang bc it ages the book sm…😖😖 bro like what kind of 31 year olds are talking like that??? Idk I didn’t like the writing at all.

It also felt extremely rushed..suddenly he found out she was pregnant and now he loves her despite only actually spending 2 hours with her MAX?😭

I also was really creeped out by Rory and Dex’s relationship??? Why are they talking about each others sex life like that?? WEIRD ASF

It was ok, I read it quick but I can’t say that I really liked it.

However I don’t regret reading it bc, like I said, I really like this trope…especially when the baby is born halfway through so you still see the cute moments. But honestly there wasn’t too much of that because the book was just everywhere. Nothing felt complete and it just fell short in my opinion 😭😮‍💨

Shit. Worse than shit. it was horse shit.

The dialogue was so bad, dude. When have you ever, in real life, heard a 35 year old say, and i quote "YASSS QUEEN!!!!!". i cringed so hard. Real people do not speak like that and never should.

this was my first foray into Hockey romance. I truly enjoyed Beyond the Game. It was heartfelt, had good pacing. Characters were uniquely drawn from team perspective. Dex and Tatum were
midwest direct and cute at the same time. sexy times were spicy without being too raunchy. This book has one of my all time favorite baby arrivals. I will not spoil it but it is exciting and ridiculous at the same time. Podium audiobook almost made this a five star. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🤩

Emanuela - per RFS
.

Ben Dover loves Amanda Hugginkiss

Seriously, I love these two. The hockey playboy and the freshly divorced school teacher burn up the sheets while on vacation in the Keys. They don’t exchange names or info, just Amanda Hugginkiss and Ben Dover. They both leave with longing for the other, only Amanda (who’s actually Tatum) leaves with a permanent reminder of their time together. With no way to find each other, she spends her pregnancy building her new life. New town, new job, new friends. Then she finds her new friend is the sister to her baby daddy when she comes face to face with him.

This was a funny, steamy, swoony story about these two strangers who had insane chemistry, and are now bound for life. Dex has been mooning over her from the first glance. We get to see then navigate this unexpected road they are on. They have the best group of friends and family- their interactions are hilarious. I love that there’s no contrived third act breakup, no random OW/OM drama to create a conflict. It’s just a great read filled with laughs, steam, and two people finding how to get where they want to be.

Yeah sadly this really wasn’t great. The biggest problem for me was the dialogue. All of it. It sounded like a bunch of teenagers.
I’ve also never read spicy scenes with that much talking and dialogue going on.
The way the MMC and his sister talked to one another also felt really uncomfortable at times. To the point where it would have made more sense to flip it into a dark taboo step brother romance!
If it wasn’t such a short book I would have DNF it.

I’ll say the funniest part we’re the kindergarten kids. Those moments did make me laugh.

recensione per il blog PECCATRICI LIBROSE

Pronte Peccatrici?

if i could rate this 0.5 stars or even 0 stars, i would. the dialogue? didn't feel real. or at least it felt unnatural idk. i don't know of anyone that speaks like that unless it's a teen trying to be hardcore idk. this felt like someone writing for the first time after reading bad fanfiction or never having that terrible fanfiction phase & then finally adjusting your tastes. it's actually so bad i don't even wanna association fanfic w it. guys. don't read this. save yourself the time. the characters felt so one dimensional & there was a lot of telling the reader things, not showing? i didn't connect to anyone at all. it was trying too hard to be hip? it's definitely written by a millennial. also, idk if it was just the format on the kindle or what, but my goodness, there were so many technical writing errors? was there no error? the capitalization was also off. the plot? gave nothing new. guys. the angst was so low angst & i had such a hard time figuring out how they truly fell for e/o, especially dex. dex & the way he thought of her felt so. icky. idk. maybe i just don't like men but that's neither here or there. the smutty scenes were probably some of the worst i've ever read & honestly? i'm never listening to the booktok girlies ever again. at least other books that are smutty have some kind of interesting plot or interesting characters but this all felt v v v juvenile. if this can get published, why can't my work? man. sorry, this is just an entire bash fest but i was so flabbergasted by how bad this was. i could've dnf but i just had to see it through. also, the dynamic between dex & his sister was so weird? there were some lines that were just weird in general, like the one where tate & dex are talking & it gave that one line from one of colleen hoover's books involving a child... (NOT A COMPLIMENT AT ALL. JAIL.). anyway this was so bad guys. like. i need a palette cleanser.

2.5/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Spicy beginning, secret pregnancy and a little too childish main characters for their age - that’s how I see book 3.
It was a good story but there were so many things that were pushing me off at some point. Childish main characters and how they were “obsessed” or mainly Dex about the girl from one night stand and after he found out she was having his baby, after wasn’t better lol.

I wanted to DNF it so badly but apparently I like torturing myself.

The first few pages were fine but then she just stuck her fingers up his ass and I was like AW HELL NAAAH!

I don’t know why I continued reading after that. I just finished reading the book and I couldn’t even tell you what it was about.

⭐⭐⭐⭐/🔥🔥🔥🔥
On the last night of her vacation to celebrate her divorce, Tate meets Dex, an NHL player who is on vacation for his teammates wedding. They decide to give eachother fake names and have a one night stand. When Dex wakes up the next morning, Tate is gone. Dex spends the next several months pining over Tate, but without her name or any info has no way to find her. A few months later, after relocating her life to Chicago, Tate finds out she is pregnant from her vacation fling, but she doesn't know who he is or how to get in contact with him. Towards the end of her pregnancy, she sees Dex on TV and realizes he is her baby daddy. Then she goes to her coworker/friend Rory's house where she runs into Dex, Rory's brother. Dex immediately accuses Tatum of setting this whole thing up. After speaking with his friends, teammates, and sister- he realizes how royally he screwed up. He and Tate start to get to know one another while preparing for the arrival of their baby. When Dex comes to Tate's after a game, he has to deliver their baby in her bathroom. As they settle into being parents, they can't fight off the feelings they have for each other.

Such a fun book! I loved that this was an easy read and that there weren't a ton of crazy story lines woven into this to try to make it more dramatic. I felt like the ending was pretty abrupt and the first couple months of having the baby was super glossed over. I would've loved to see a little more relationship development in that time frame. All in all, loved this book and definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

“If you were a transformer, you would be Optimus Fine.”

I knew I was gonna like this book from the first line in and it stayed that way til the very end. I was not disappointed.

The writing was nice. The storyline flowed pretty well with plenty of hilarious banters and jokes, those sexy and sweet, well mostly from our MMC, he’s such a golden retriever I love him; but at the same time deep as hell moments. Suffice to say, it’s a whole baggage and kudos to the author for making everything so enjoyable.

I love every characters, the made family, the dynamics, the chemistry and interactions between characters, not only our 2 mains but also the side ones as well, were phenomenal. I loved every second of it and was kinda jealous because this is the kind of circle that I want in my life!!

However, it was quite a shame that we didn't get to see:
1. Rory much in the book. I think she was an interesting character and was so looking forward to see her being “the super cool aunt” to baby Summer, but she literally made a grand appearance in the beginning then disappeared and left crumbs here and there throughout the book, shame.

2. Their further future. I'd love love love to see daddy Dex with them little Tater Tots, which I’m guessing would be shown in the next books in the series. I’m so excited just thinking about it and seriously can’t wait!!!

Overall, this was such a nice, sweet, fun and light read. I had a really good time devouring this and tbh, was quite sad that it ended because I seriously couldn’t get enough of this.
What did you put in here Susan Renee, I need more!!!

Dex, faimos jucator de hockey, e in vacanta in Key West la nunta unui prieten.

I am loving this series! Can’t wait for the next book! Dex and Tatum I loved them just as much as the other couples but some of the writing confused me. We get to see when Tatum finds out she’s pregnant and then all of a sudden the next chapter she’s 7 months pregnant and finds out who Dex is. There was really no timeline established so it was confusing for a little bit and didn’t get the whole 5 stars. Nonetheless I still enjoyed the book and loved their relationship and seeing the whole gang again. The epilogue for this book really got me. 🥹

Loved it

Oh my goodness I just loved Dex and Tatum story!! When they first met they did give their real names but there was such a strong connection! She was all he could think about and when he saw her again standing in his kitchen with his sister he was happy and surprised all at the same time! He wasn't very nice at first but when he calmed down he knew he would do anything to have her in his life!! This is a must read!! I would recommend this book to everyone!
