Will what happens on holiday ... stay on holiday? And can they learn to live with the consequences?
Every year, a close-knit group of friends spend two sun-filled weeks in a Spanish villa. For Derek and Sharonne, Conor and Maeve, Rory and Trish, and Liam, it's the perfect way to end the summer and escape their high-pressured lives in Dublin. No children, no responsibilities, and no distractions.
This year, however, the group befriends Agneta and Anna Maria, two women holidaying in a neighbouring villa, and a series of events is set in motion that will shake the group to its very core.
As the holiday comes to an end and the friends arrive home in Dublin, life appears to go back to normal.
But the deceptions that began in Spain refuse to be buried and infidelities and secrets come to the surface
As facades crumble, each of the friends discover who they can trust and who, ultimately, will betray them.
Ladies, pull up those sun loungers! A bunch of Irish friends find their comfortable routine thrown into turmoil with the arrival of two Finnish blondes. Their annual fortnight in Spain leaves the group with more than the usual sunburn to contend with on their arrival home. A light-hearted read from travel-writer Bolger.
Very good message told about how we have consequences for our actions, as well as how some things in life are out of our control. Parts of the plot got a bit OTT towards the end, with some of the shock value events being unnecessary.
Successful middle aged Irish business people and their families have mid life issues. The blurb on the back is slightly misleading - "But deceptions and secrets that began in Spain refuse to be buried" - seems like there is mystery and intrigue but really there is very little of it, nothing really remains deceptive or secret for very long and the mysteries are fairly average. Some characters are much better developed than others. Liam's storyline twist was well out of left field in an awkward way, something was missing there. Overall, an enjoyable enough read but nothing to take too seriously.
