I mean I read and I read and I don't know how to write a non-spoiler review. All I know is this:
If I could punch a couple characters I would
Then I'd kick them while they're down
Then I'd feed them to that monster we bumped into
Then I'd repeat the process.
There was one particularly moving arc that was perfect in its resolution/beginning that I loved.
And overall even though it was long, I'm miffed it was so short.
But I'm grumpy now cuz it's the first in the series and I don't have another book.
But I am still thinking some of the characters needed more time and focus!
So yeah. To sum up:
Long book, too short, punch some characters and hang out with them longer.
I love doing ARC reviews for Woodscourt books! I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the first full novel I read by M.H. Woodcourt, but I was completely blown away by a short-story of hers, so I desperately needed to read a full-length novel. When Darkness Hunts the Dawn is her latest work and the start of a new series (that should hit the shelves in September) and I was hooked right away with a very strong start into the story.
The author has amazing writing-skills, but it's her love for the characters and her world-building that makes reading When Darkness Hunts the Dawn such a delightful experience. The story centers around the twins Mikoneh and Maya and is alternately told from their respective perspective, with more emphasis on Mikoneh's view. From the very beginning, I was rooting for the twins and the story had me constantly on the edge of my seat (or bed or whereever I had some time to read). It's fast-paced and brimming with action, emotion, drama and trauma – but also a lot of hope. There are some very interesting side-characters with lots of potential in here, and I really hope to see more of them in future books.
On a sidenote: If I understand correctly, all the authors books are interconnected, so knowing her other books might make this one even more enjoyable than it already is for me.

When Darkness Hunts the Dawn has a very classic feel and I gladly devoured every page of it! Highly recommended.

This amazing book dives straight in with the conflict, as twins, Mikoneh and his sister Maya are condemned to death for leading a rebellion. This is the beginning of an epic dark fantasy adventure, though much has already happened before we even enter the scene. (I recommend you also read Woodcourt's excellent Sentinel Seer series.) It is an adventure, that once you start you will not be able to stop reading. Woodscourt keep you turning the page as the twins face more and more challenges.
Mikoneh is a wonderful character, though it is heartbreaking what he has to suffer. A dark mage has his claws in Mikoneh and he will use and abuse him until he has drained the last drop of his blood.
Maya and Penn are great support characters at this point, though I hope Maya's role grows, as she is Mikoneh's twin, and she is just as important and competent as he is. I get the feeling that her previous suffering is a foreshadowing of how she will need to help her brother in the future. The wood elves are the most intriguing, because we don't really understand their motives nor their full capabilities, because they keep surprising us. And there are beautiful dragons! I hope we get to meet more of them.
Woodscourt's description of the elemental spirits are lovely; you can clearly imagine the little fire spirits and their concern for Mikoneh. And the more impulsive and whimiscal air spirits match what you would expect.
Overall, this is an excellent start to the Dragons of Rokahn series, and I look forward to reading the next book.

When Darkness Hunts the Dawn is the first book in the Dragons of Rokahn series, and wow, it pulled me in right from the start. It follows twins Mikoneh and Maya, who manage to escape execution after a failed rebellion—thanks to some very unexpected fire magic—and then end up on the run from Dark Mages who want to use their heritage for their own dark purposes. Together with their friend Penn, they set out on a dangerous journey in search of the Dragon King.

I loved this book. The bond between the twins is easily my favorite part—they’re protective of each other, stubborn, and so believable as siblings. Their relationship really grounded the story, even when things got tense or magical. The world itself is fantastic: elves, dragons, elemental magic, and plenty of intrigue. Every new twist just made me want to keep reading.

The Dark Mages are really creepy, the action is fast, and Penn is such a great character—loyal, steady, and exactly the kind of friend you’d want when the world is falling apart.

This is the kind of YA fantasy that’s just plain fun to get lost in. It’s got heart, danger, and plenty of adventure, and the ending left me so ready for book two. Highly recommend if you love fantasy with strong sibling dynamics and dragons in the mix.

This book was SUCH a blast to read! It has younger adult protagonists caught up in something much bigger than themselves, a dangerous world filled with magic and secrets, and a sense of adventure that pulls you along and never really slows down. And what's even better, it also isn’t afraid to dip into darker territory, which is exactly the kind of balance I love.

The twins really carried the story for me. I enjoyed following their dynamic, watching them grow, and seeing how their bond held strong even as the stakes rose higher and higher. The supporting cast is more enigmatic, with plenty of secrets tucked away, and it was so much fun peeling back those layers as the plot moved forward.

Pacing-wise, this story never lagged. I was entertained from start to finish and never once felt bored. The mix of politics, hidden magic, complex family, and terrible villains kept the energy high, while still leaving room for great character development. That said, this did read as younger fantasy and I was surprised it wasn't listed as upper YA.

All in all, this is the kind of fantasy that hits a sweet spot for me: fun, adventurous, a little dark when it needs to be, and super engaging. I’m already looking forward to diving into the next book to see where the twins’ journey leads!

This book took me a little to get into as the world and story set up are extensive. We jump into the story with Mikoneh, his twin sister Maya, and their friend Penn are sentenced to death for leading a rebellion against a tyrant of a leader. As Mikoneh and his sister are set aflame to be burned at the stake, a mighty power awakes in him, and he is able to set the three of them free as those watching flee for their lives. This is where the adventure starts! They race to stay ahead of the evil that tracks them to try to reach the Dragon King. I appreciated Mikoneh's POV and felt sadness as he faced the evil that sought to control and own him. I loved the close bond his twin and him share and am very interested to see if this plays into future books more. I really enjoyed the take on fire and wind spirits and how playful and animated they were, it was a refreshing take on the elementals. There were a few surprises in this book for me, and the last quarter definitely had me wishing and hoping for the ending I wanted, but I was unsure if it would happen. It will be interesting to see how the story moves from here and how Maya and Penn are involved in future books. But what I look forward to the most is Mikoneh and the one he gave his name back to.

It took much longer for me to read this wonderful opening series novel, but that had to do with me rather than the story! Having read the Mark of Valiath series, I was excited to receive this ARC. Woodscourt brings to life an excited and complicated fantasy realm with excellent world building and powerful character relations. I love jumping back and forth between the twins Maya and Mikoneh, and I'm looking forward to seeing Maya 's growth in skill and character the way her brother did in book 1. This was a satisfying installment but left me wanting more in the next installments!

I’ve loved two other series from MH Woodscourt, but she’s outdoing herself with this one. The stakes are always high, the descriptions vivid, the scenes captivating — and the relationships are so heartwarming even in the middle of so much heartbreak. I loved the twins and their desire for justice and peace, how they maintained their sense of self amid so much upheaval, and how they remained devoted to each other and to their friends and their country as they entered into the larger world. I enjoyed the magic and was immersed into the battle scenes; I was intrigued by the power dynamics and amazed by the revelations. Everything about this book is epic. And the title suits it perfectly.

This is the first book I have read by M.H. Woodscourt, and most definitely not the last. Her phenomenal storytelling pulled me into a fast paced, action packed adventure; I couldn’t put the book down. The combination of vivid world building, well written characters, intrigue, betrayal, new and old friendship and family, creates a story that leaves you breathless, and wanting more. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

One thing I can emphatically state is that this author, has the unnerving capability to suck me into any tale she graces me with. Unnerving? Well, yes.... I barely start reading a book by her and in just a few short pages, I'm fully vested in the characters, I'm intrigued, I'm committed, I'm emotionally immersed, without any conscience thought, I find, suddenly, that the richness of the story, the opulence of the characters and the abundantly well written prose has caught me, hook, line and sinker! Starting off dramatically with twins Maya and Mikoneh, twins in dire trouble, facing execution. The spectators and court are braying for blood, their blood. But they're not alone, so too is their friend, Penn, who so happens to be the Duke's son.... complicated? Nah, just very intriguing! The more I read, the more immersed I got, what with the author tantalising me with crumbs along the way, I hung onto every word.

Talk about 'out of the frying pan into the fire'!! And no, no pun intended....our three rebels escape one situation, well, impending execution can't REALLY be a situation, and run for their lives, only to be caught in the snare that Sathe has cast! Oh boy, all looked really bleak...until Minno intervened. What a strange boy Minno is! I wasn't sure what to make of him, one minute he's a prisoner, the next a saviour. And he's almost....toneless, monotonous in his speech, just weird. But heavens did he have my jaw dropping at....at...at....what he did, what he is. The twins discover SO much that had been hidden from them, who they really were and the confusion together with their disbelief had them literally gawking! I mean, really? You suddenly find out you're capable of unimaginable things, yep total disbelief. Yet it is this very ability that gives them a semblance hope. And all they know is that they have to get to the Dragon King, Owenikiras Rokahn for his aid. When they finally get to meet him, he wasn't what they expected. The truths came out and boy did it set my head spinning! What an awesome character he is.

I really loved all the characters. The author has an uncanny ability to make me feel as though I'm firm friends with them all, and if I wasn't, hells bells, I wanna be! I don't think there could be a NICER more supportive friend than Penn. Not only did he see the need for change, see what his own father had become, he allied with the rebels, making him de facto a traitor of the highest order. He's level headed and so...NICE! The twins have totally different personalities, I loved their "roundness and fullness", so cool. I really feel for Mikoneh, fire took his parents so when he manifests...something...he's horrified . Which does nothing for his confidence, as the events literally explode around them. From being a leader for the rebels and always knowing what should be done, Mikoneh's confidence is totally eroded by their capture, he second guesses everything. But his resilience is steadfast, his need to protect his sister and his friend, paramount. I loved watching him go from strength to strength. I loved his determination to do anything he could for Reven, a character I dearly wanted to fold against me and hug away his.... well, you're going to have to find out WHAT makes Reven so special! ALL these characters are special! The unexpected appearance of Katanni towards the end was a very uplifting moment, she's awesome and I hope to see lots more of her as the series progresses.

So too is Maya an exceptional character, she's got a sassy attitude, she's stubborn and resolute, no one can say no to her once she's decided something. In fact, her growth is just as spectacular as her brother's. Neither of them could have envisished what they would have to endure, what they would have to do....some of these events made me insides churl! Gee whiz! Sathe is RELENTLESS! Torture is second nature to him and goodness me does he turn the screws whenever he can! But there's a greater danger than the Mage, an unknown one who's vying for blood...

What an exceptional story this is! What an exceptional world the author breathes life into! I ADORE how immersed I get in any of this author's work, her penmanship is outstanding! To feel each punch, to feel each emotion, to feel every single event, is a captivating journey. A journey wraught with dangers, a journey of awakening, a journey of justice and righteousness, a journey I wanted to continue, a journey I'll take up at the drop of a hat!

Mikoneh and Maya have been the leaders of a rebellion after their parents were killed a year ago. But when they are betrayed and sentenced to death, something awakens in Mikoneh and they manage to escape - only to end up in the hands of a dark mage. No matter where they run, Sathe the dark mage, can find them using Mikoneh's blood. But as Maya searches for him with their newfound allies and Mikoneh is trying to escape, they find out more than they ever could have about their heritage. Now they not only must they stay safe and away from Sathe, they have to learn new abilities and process the news that their entire life was built on a lie. (There is so much that happens in this book, that is probably the best I am going to do at summarizing with spoiling anything!)
Mikoneh and Maya are a lot alike - as twins that is to be expected - yet different as well. Mikoneh is strong and willing to take over the rebellion. He had to grow up pretty fast after their parents were murdered. Maya is strong as well but has had a harder time coping. Once both of them put their mind to something, you can't tell them no. They would go to the ends of the earth for each other as well as anyone they cared about. And luckily, Mikoneh doesn't break easily and has a strong will. Penn was a great supporting character and I would have loved more about him. Even though he doesn't have the same familial line/gifts that doesn't stop him. There are hints that maybe he will have more of a presence in later books and I am definitely curious. Speaking of curious, I am definitely curious about Minno. I don't want to give too many spoilers but I am still left wondering what the heck his deal is!
From the very beginning you are taken on a journey though not only new places but surviving and learning to harness their newfound identities as well. The world building goes beyond merely describing the world, but also the emotions of the characters as well. This book is told in 3rd person and is told from both Maya and Mikoneh's perspective. There is no heading to tell you when there is a switch, so there was a couple times it took me a second to realize there had been a switch, but once I realized that would happen, I was able to expect it.
There was a good balance of fast paced action with the tension of the buildup to some of the bigger events. You are left wondering how characters will get out certain situations and how it will affect not only them, but the rest of the characters as well. This book was well written and I definitely enjoyed this story. I am definitely curious as to what will happen next, esp with a certain character that has left me upset with them. Seriously, I want to know what his deal is!

When Darkness Hunts the Dawn is a strong epic fantasy with dark edges and a coming of age story threaded around the main narrative. It's got convincing characters who feel absolutely real, a strong narrative that kept me engaged from the opening pages and a fully realised world with hints of mysteries yet to be uncovered. It reminds me that I really ought to get around to re-reading and finishing the Mark of Valliath series that I started last year.

Twins, Mikoneh and Maya, are on their way to the execution block at the start of the book. We know little other than that they were part of a failed rebellion and are to be executed for it. Things quickly come to a head as Mikoneh discovers untapped powers within himself and the two find themselves on the run. Unfortunately, the rebellion charge ends up being the least of their worries as Dark Mages have a vested interest in the twins powers as well.

This is a tightly paced and well written epic fantasy with a lore steeped world behind it and characters you can't help but love or hate. Split between the two twins perspectives, you get a clear view of the world from Maya's perspective and a darker and more twisted perspective on the Dark Mages from Mikoneh. It's rich and well told and I loved the way the characters were built and developed as the novel went on. I also loved the use of elemental spirits who each seemed to have their own whims and personalities.

All in all, this is a strong novel and whilst it looks like many of the authors novels are loosely connected, there would be no issues in picking up the story here for the first time. It's dark at points, particularly Mikoneh's story arch, but the use of dual perspectives means that the focus then shifts to the wider world. All in all, an interesting and gripping novel and I'll have to see where the next one takes us.

I downloaded this book without any context. All I knew was it involved dragons.

The begginning of the story starts right into the action. At first, you are unsure why two young twins are being tried with crimes against the province and burned at the stake. Quickly we discover something isnt quite right.

After a magical escape, twins Maya and Mikoneh are on the run from dark mages. Mages who seem to want them, and their blood, for nefarious reasons.

Yes, they have dragon blood in their veins that has been dormant. This story was the beginning of them discovering both their dragon heritage, and elemental powers. It was told so well that I felt for the twins and their friends along the whole journey.

I cant wait to see Penn step up and do something amazing. I love his character but am saddened by him being on the sidelines during fights.

Sathe, the big baddy of book 1, was a very intruiging villain. I enjoyed just how dark and terrifying he was. Sometimes it is difficult to portray a villain in their darkest mind space. Woodscourt made him such a belivable and hated character. The anguish and torture Mikoneh goes through are intense and exciting to follow. It made the ending and his suffering so sweet.

Yes, there were dragons, gorgeous and majestic dragons. I cant wait for more of them to join the fray. I loved the unique discriptions of them having regal manes along their neck (Im looking at you Dragon King).

I also enjoyed how the book title got incorporated into the tale. Darkness hunts the dawn, until the sunlight turns around and hunts back.

It was an amazingly woven story and I highly recomend it to any avid readers of dark fantasy.

Twins Mikoneh and Maya are to be executed for their rebellion against a tyrant leader. But when the pyre is lit and the flames answer to Mikoneh's rage, the twins escape with their friend. But as they are running from one oppressor they find themselves pursued by another, far more insidious, evil. Mages set on reigniting an ancient war will do anything to gain the upper hand and their new ally the Dragon King can only do so much to protect them.

✨️ A deep long forgotten lore
️ An Ancient war reignites
✨️ Elemental magics
✨️ Fantastic world building and character development
✨️ DRAGONS! Need I say more?!?

This was a fantastic book! I was hooked from the first chapter and plowed through it to satisfy my need to know what happened next. The characters were intrigueing, the magic system well thought out and with a deep lore that made the world building feel whole and intricate. I enjoyed the fast paced nature and loved how it felt action packed with while still leaving a lot of room for character interaction and development.

I've got to say, one of my favourite characters is Minno, I'm not sure yet if I'm supposed to love him or not but I find him so intriguing. I want to know everything about him, and I'd kinda like a book that's just his... I feel like there is a lot of backstory there and I'm desperate to find out!

I really loved the plot of this book and enjoyed the few twists throughout the story. And really enjoyed how it ended, I felt satisfied with how events turned out and liked how it was leading into the next book without a cliffhanger.

I can't wait to see how this series continues, I have a few guesses as to where it's going and I'm so eager to find out!

This is exactly the way epic fantasy should be. Lush, intricate world building, a pace that alternates between high action and exposition, events that set the stage for a longer series, some questions answered with other ones introduced, and characters who are relatable and heroic but still have room to grow.

All this to start, and that’s just the description. What had ME kicking my feet was the Easter eggs for events in the Record of the Sentinel Seer quintet. While it’s not necessary to have read that series, readers familiar with it will discover intriguing crossovers and new information about beloved characters (plus references to others…I have a hunch as to who that ‘skilled Elementalist’ might have been!!).

As to vibes…and oh there are VIBES. This opener to the series reads (to me) like a really good anime or old school D&D campaign. There are really terrifying villains, some super atmospheric settings, and characters that present themselves with no duplicity or artifice. Heroes abound, villains are truly EVIL, and the victory is satisfying.

This is definitely for adult audiences, and contains some heavy themes and moments. But—again—the payoff is sweet. Can’t wait to watch this world unfold.

This novel was an absolute treat! It’s an ode to the classic fantasy stories that led me to fall in love with reading, and I LOVE it.

Mikoneh is a rebel betrayed by a friend. The story starts with him at the stake, but instead of burning, he embraces the flames and uses them to break free. From there, you join him on his journey to escape the dark mage Sathe, who plots to turn Mikoneh’s birthright against the world. He’s joined by his sister Maya, the runaway noble Penn, wood elf Ter, and Minno, a mysterious mage with hidden intentions.

It’s a character driven story that shines most in its description. Woodscourt does a phenomenal job painting a vivid image of this world. It’s a world that truly comes to life.

There’s not many people I wouldn’t recommend this book to. It’s a return to classic themes of hope and triumph despite the struggles of a corrupt world. This book definitely suits readers young adult and up. It’s also a great break from heavier high fantasy, as I found this required a much lighter investment in order to understand the world and the magic while still compelling and complex.

P.S. the second book in this series comes out later this year, so now is the perfect time to get reading!

This was my first book by M. H. Woodscourt, and I guarantee it won't be my last. The book starts out with Mikoneh, and his twin sister, Maya, and their friend, Penn being tied to stakes for execution after leading a rebellion against a leader who is pure evil. But before they can be burned at the stake, Mikoneh discovers powers that he possesses and saves himself, Maya, and Penn. As the story progresses, Mikoneh and Maya will discover shocking truths about their parents, themselves, and their birth.
They start a journey to find the Dragon King and hopefully safety. It will not be an easy journey, as evil chases them.
Mikoneh is very protective of his twin, and when evil catches him, he vows to return to Maya and protect his sister at all costs.
This book has everything that I love in a fantasy novel. First of all the world building was phenomenal. I truly could picture every scene in my mind. The epic battles, the dragons, the fairies and the magic. I definitely want to go back and read more of this author's books since I heard many of the books are connected in some way. And I truly cannot wait to visit Mikoneh and Maya in the next book. This author definitely has a new fan!

"... it was about being alive and loving every second of that aliveness."

Once again, Woodscourt has penned a masterpiece filled with reminders of who we should be, how we should strive to live, and that the good in the world is worth fighting for. Her lyrical prose weaves a spell that transports you into the book and refuses to let you go even long after you've finished.

Her characters are the heart and soul of the story. Like Frodo, they do what needs done because it is right. Their strength and determination tug at my heart and soul. Her villains are multi-dimensional with their own dreams.

There is not a stone left unturned when she crafts her worlds. She seems to know every square inch of every realm that she's ever created, and she weaves them together flawlessly.

The characters and their worlds are swaddled within a plot that is crafted with a finesse that few possess.

I cannot recommend this book (and all of her others) enough. If you love nobelbright fantasy and you haven't read any of Woodscourt's books, you are missing out on some of the most amazing books in the genre.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely love M H Woodscourt and her writing. When I received this copy I started it right away and then life got stupid, so needless to say it’s taken me a hot minute to finish it, but it was well worth the read!

The characters are real and definitely struggling with their newfound identities. Mikoneh and Maya are twins, raised by Mama and Fa, who were killed during a rebellion. Little do these two siblings know, but they are both of royal blood and elemental awesomeness!

These two are the children of the Dragon King and have amazing powers that they are just tapping into.

This again is a tale of evil and good fighting against each other and as always evil will always lose! The story sweeps grandly and I couldn’t put it down once I finally got back to it. I can’t wait for book two as we still have an evil mage queen out there wreaking havoc on the world and our twin dragons have a big part to play.

Thank you, M H for another awesome story!

There is very little to dislike and almost everything to like about this story.
It's engaging and fast paced. The pages almost turn themselves and I found it impossible to put down. The story centers around twins who discover who they are while experiencing an entire hidden world. Finding out that stories from their childhood are real and happening to them while being thrust into a war not of their making, creates some incredible tension and emotions. Mikoneh and Maya have to work together and be strong enough to make it through incredible hardship to keep each other safe.
We get a little bit of everything epic fantasy in this tale...dragons, mages (evil of course), revenants and ancient beings that look like children. We also get battles and psychological warfare between two main characters that was intense! The character work here really shines and I'm not afraid to say my fav was Reven lol and that Minno really let me down.
The writing is masterful and creates such imagery of the scenes, I felt like I was there. I'm immediately going in to book 2!

Mages and dragons

Mikoneh and Maya lost their parents a while ago, and now also their rebellion failed due to betrayal. Facing execution, Mikoneh's fire affinity awakens, and the twins escape with the viscount. Captured by Sathe, the dark mage, Mikoneh first escapes and meets the Dragon King, but another betrayal puts the young man into enslavement. And the fight against darkness begins anew.
The story is full of secrets, stories, and lost histories, and fascinating magic that can be wielded both by good and evil. The twins and Penn are interesting characters, each with their own strong personality, qualities, and flaws - Mikoneh's determination balanced by his temper, Maya's curiosity and warm heart that takes great suffering, Penn's quiet support. The presence of dragons and elves and other creatures give the world a fantastic flavor. The story flows smoothly, twisting and turning, driven by the character's actions. And even though one battle has been won, the war is not yet at its end.

Woodscourt has created another wonderful series opener, perfect for dragon-lover fans of the Wheel of Time, Stormlight Archive, and Malazan, Book of the Fallen.

When Darkness Hunts the Dawn is reminiscent of those fantasy masterpieces while standing uniquely on its own.

The world building in this novel is more layered than past series and shows a lot of time and passion has gone into crafting the world of Sirinhigha.

Mikoneh is a complex character with desires and hopes for goodness and that show in each of his struggles throughout the story.

The most intriguing character of the lot has to be Minno. I won’t spoil anything but he has my interest.

The conflicts in the story are a beautiful blend of personal and immediate to vast and world altering. Which, in my opinion, is one of the hardest things to pull off when writing an epic.

Dragons of Rokahn is the flagship series of Mithrinn and I hope it continues for many more installments.

Devilish Mages, A Dangerous Dragon king, and Defiant Fae twins Mikoneh and Maya are the stars in this first novel in the 'Dragons of Rokahn' series by M H Woodscourt. Though this is a darker read than I normally enjoy, my heart and emotions were instantly captured in the initial scene, a sentence of execution by fire for the 20-year-old twins and their friend Lord Penn! Mikoneh's heretofore unknown magic explodes, and the three escape. So begins The Darkness and the Hunting! A twisted evil mage, Sathe, is after them. Fae friends (?), Minno and Ter, help and sometimes hinder the twins in their quest to save their lives, their city, and even their planet!! Delightful vignettes of childlike Fae and their villages are scattered throughout the book. The portraiture of Owenekiras Rokahn, the Dragon King, took my breath away! There is pain and torture, no spice, but some perhaps future romance. 5 stars

When Darkness Hunts the Dawn is an action-packed fantasy that will keep you reading to the last page. The world-building is fantastic and will draw you in.

The characters are well-written and feel like real people. I especially like Reven and how… trying to avoid spoilers… Let’s just say the faith element isn’t heavily explored, but the brief mention in one scene is very well done.

The villain will make your skin crawl. Sathe is easily one of the creepiest book villains I have ever encountered.

Also, there are dragons! Uniquely written dragons that fit well into the equally unique magic system. I'm not usually a fan of dragon shifters, but Woodscourt's work is making me reconsider that. I highly recommend!

(3.5 rounded to 4)

The world building and scene crafting is phenomenal throughout the entire novel. The world is clearly richly built. However, my only problem with the novel is that the characters aren’t as rounded out as the rest of the novel. Each character is pretty one-dimensional and stagnant throughout the entire story. Perhaps they find more growth throughout further novels and characters are able to find depth in the sequels, but I was disappointed to find that there was nothing past their face value. Otherwise, I would give anything to step foot into this world and have my own glowing mushrooms in my home and meet lovely little wood-elfs about my day. Maybe just leave out the evil Dark Mages and corrupt government?

I was hooked from the first page. Twins, Mikoneh & Maya, along with their friend, Penn, are convicted as traitors. When Mikoneh is about to be burned alive, we find he can control fire. 🔥
As the threesome are on the run, we learn about the court magician dark mage, Sathe. Not one you want to be hunting you.
He does evil things upon capturing Mikoneh and has him do evil against his will.
The Dragon King is enlisted to help get Mikoneh back. He is very mysterious to begin with but we understand why later.
We also learn many secrets that have been kept from the twins.
In the end Mikoneh is returned to his sister and Sathe is outwitted.

DRAGONS! And not just any dragons. DRAGON SHIFTERS! Plus fairies, unique fae beings, mysterious lands.

M.H. Woodscourt weaves another brilliant epic tale in the universe of Mithrinn, within the familair world of Sirinhigha. There is a new cast of characters; a couple old faces and some clues from Record of the Sentinel Seer; loads of action, adventure, betrayal, secrets, dark magic. Twists and turns. There is a looming war from the past that threatens everything. Then we get what appears to be two big bads -- the Mage Queen and an anonymous man out to destroy Mikoneh for no reason other than hate. Oh, and can't forget our one suspicious character.

I really need book 2 NOW!

Intriguing

This is a very well written book. The battle of good versus evil is the overarching theme covering both internal and external clashes. The characters were relatable with the exception on the villain of the story. The main character of the group of 6 is a young man who is captured by the evil character and struggles during his captivity with the evil the mage is forcing him to accept his worldview using a bond he forced on the main character to turn him evil. This is a battle we all face to on a smaller scale on any given day.
