Whoa! Stop what you are doing and read this novel. Soul Dancing by Gail Priest is a novel different from anything that I’d read before. It begins with a frail and sick old woman on her death bed with her husband clasping onto the little time he has left with her. Suddenly, the story shifts into a room where the reader witnesses a woman who dies giving birth to a baby. It’s unbelievable how the stories of these women are interwoven. I’m trying desperately not to include spoilers because this is one rollercoaster ride that you will not want to miss a drop or a turn. At its heart, Soul Dancing is a family story. I was immediately invested in both the plot and the characters. It’s about the reach of the choices we make and how they can alter the trajectory of our lives. It touches on so much of life: death, friendship, dysfunction, found family, depression, addiction and living. Priest handles each of these topics with such grace. I found myself crying and laughing with equal measure. While you might have to suspend your own beliefs to welcome this story of twists and turns into your heart, I encourage you to do so. It is so worth the ride.
Soul Dancing by Gail Priest is a delightful woman's fiction with a bit of romance and a paranormal twist! And quite frankly, I LOVED this cross-genre experiment!
Shirlene is a 90-year-old woman dying of cancer. Rain is a 20-year-old drug addict giving birth. Both women die, but Shirlene refuses to go toward the light. However, she dwells long enough that she can't return to her old body, instead finding herself in L&D in the final stages of labor.
Imagine this classy, reserved, older woman finding herself in the body of a young woman with tattoos and piercings - and then trying to explain to those she loves what has happened. Throw in her husband's death bed confession, romantic feelings toward Cameron, the uncle willing to raise his brother's baby, and an old friend who pushes Shirlene to take second chances, and you have an amazing novel that will make you shake your head, laugh, cry, and cheer for redemption. I couldn't put this award-winning book down - and I'm betting you won't be able to either!
This was one of the most unique things I've read in a while and I was enthralled through the whole thing. You have to suspend some belief while reading, but it's worth the journey.
We start with 90 yr old Shirlene who died but her soul goes into another's body- Rain who is giving birth. Now Shirlene has to pretend to be Rain and finds out that the father's brother, Can, promised to help raise his niece. The two get close and she tells him the truth.
I loved that they became this little family. It was hard and there are a lot of twists and tests in her new body/world but I appreciate each aspect of what they go through. Even more surprises await you in the book, but I want you to read it and find out yourself.
I loved this book! The clever twists and turns kept me completely engaged, so much so that I just wanted to keep reading. The main character Shirlene is delightful, so believable and relatable even as such wild and crazy things befall her. Being a resident of Rehoboth Beach, I admire the author’s sense of place for the scenes that occur there. A charming, interesting and intriguing story that almost makes the unbelievable believable. I urge you to read it.
In the twilight of her life, 90-year-old Shirlene Foster finds herself standing at the precipice of life and death within a hospice facility in Philadelphia. Her story begins here, at the crossroads between worlds, where she is torn by the fear of leaving behind her husband, Stan, who is battling a failing heart. Shirlene's determination to remain by Stan's side becomes a poignant stand against the inevitable embrace of death. In an extraordinary twist of fate, her journey takes a miraculous turn as she transcends in the body of 20-year-old Rain DeLuca, who is experiencing the throes of childbirth. This unexpected reincarnation thrusts Shirlene into an unfamiliar world, complete with a newborn daughter, and introduces her to Cameron Michaels, the baby's uncle. Cameron, who has assumed a fatherly role after his brother abandoned Rain, becomes a pivotal figure in Shirlene's new life as she navigates a delicate balance of truth and deception. As Shirlene adjusts to her second chance at life, she grapples with the complexities of her new identity. The vibrant energy of Rain's youthful body juxtaposes sharply with the memories and accumulated wisdom of Shirlene's 90 years. This contrast creates a fascinating interplay that enriches the narrative. Her interactions with Cameron are laden with tension, as he begins to notice the peculiar changes in Rain's demeanor. Unable to maintain the façade indefinitely, Shirlene confides in Cameron, sharing her true identity and her urgent desire to reunite with Stan. Cameron's initial disbelief gives way to curiosity and empathy, as he is drawn to the sincerity and depth of Shirlene's love for her husband. However, the path to Stan is littered with emotional hurdles, not least because the couple's past is marred by the tragic loss of their son, Danny, which strained their marriage for years. Amidst the unfolding drama, an unexpected bond develops between Shirlene and Cameron. As they face challenges together, Shirlene is compelled to confront long-buried feelings and truths. Just before his death, Stan reveals a decades-old secret, adding yet another layer of complexity to Shirlene's emotional journey. She finds herself torn between loyalty to Stan and the burgeoning emotions she feels for Cameron. This internal struggle is both poignant and profound, forcing Shirlene to reevaluate the boundaries of her heart. When eventually questioning her own sanity, the secret Shirlene harbors from Cameron acts as a wedge that complicates their relationship, testing the limits of trust and understanding. Shirlene's journey evolves into one of self-discovery, forgiveness, and the eternal quest for love in its myriad forms. Cameron, meanwhile, stands at his own crossroads, stretched thin by the demands placed upon him. Just as he begins to process the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Rain/Shirlene and their shared responsibilities, he is struck by devastating news about his ex-fiancée and best friend, Aimee. Aimee, left unable to communicate after a stroke, casts Cameron into a profound internal conflict. His commitment to Shirlene and the baby is shaken as he feels the pull of his past and the loyalty he owes to Aimee. This emotional turmoil underscores the theme of caregiving as a universal human experience, one that transcends age, time, and even the boundaries of life and death. As Cameron navigates these turbulent waters, the story unfolds with grace and empathy, exploring the intricacies of human relationships and the enduring power of love. Gail Priest's "Soul Dancing" is a masterfully written novel that captivates readers with its emotional depth and vividly descriptive writing. Gail Priest’s ability to craft such a surreal yet believable narrative is nothing short of brilliant. The transition is seamless, drawing readers into a world where love defies the boundaries of age and time. The author delves deep into the intricacies of human emotions, capturing the reader's heart as Shirlene navigates her new life while holding onto her past. Shirlene's journey is portrayed with such empathy that readers can't help but feel every ounce of her confusion, determination, and love. This novel is a profound exploration of love in its many forms. The enduring love between Shirlene and her husband, Stan, is portrayed with tenderness and authenticity, despite the strains in their marriage caused by the tragic death of their young son, Danny. As Shirlene, now in Rain's body, reconnects with Stan, the novel beautifully illustrates how love can persist beyond physical separation and even death. Additionally, the potential soulmate connection between Shirlene and Cameron, Rain's brother-in-law, adds layers of complexity to the narrative. Gail Priest explores these relationships with a deft touch, creating moments of tension and tenderness that resonate deeply with the reader. The love Shirlene feels for her newborn daughter, Arlene, and her unwavering friendship with Hattie further enrich the narrative, showcasing love's multifaceted nature. The novel's settings are as vividly painted as its characters. Gail Priest's descriptive prowess shines through in scenes such as the serene beach bike ride shared by Shirlene and Cameron, where the beauty of the surroundings mirrors the budding connection between them. The labyrinth Shirlene constructs serves also as a metaphor for her inner journey and is portrayed with such detail that readers can almost feel the cool breeze and hear the swashing of water's waves as she contemplates her identity and future. These rich descriptions not only enhance the narrative but also immerse the reader in Shirlene's world, making her experiences all the more relatable and poignant. In conclusion, "Soul Dancing" is not just a tale of romance but a profound exploration of the human spirit's resilience in the face of grief and the transformative power of love. Gail Priest has crafted a narrative that lingers in the heart and mind, prompting readers to consider the complexities of relationships and the enduring connections that shape our lives. Through Shirlene's journey, this heartbreaking and emotional roller coaster novel beautifully illustrates that love can transcend time and space, offering hope and healing even in the most challenging circumstances. If you like speculative fiction, romance, deep character development, and second chances, you’ll love this book! Such an original premise and executed beautifully. Fast paced, with two distinct points of view, one female and one male. An immersive read that is delightful and thought provoking!
This is certainly an unusual story, with a couple in their nineties having to deal with their ill health, as the wife, Shirlene Foster, is in a hospice dying of cancer. Her husband Stan is sad to see her go, not even able to sleep in their room or bed without her, and in very bad health himself. As Shirlene dies, she is drawn to the light, but she feels she can’t leave her husband just yet and suddenly finds herself in a delivery room of the nearby hospital, giving birth to a baby! A strange man is there with her, but she has no idea of who he is. Cameron Michaels was shocked months before, by the arrival of a pregnant Rain DeLuca, his brother Chase’s girlfriend. Both are addicts and were homeless, and he hadn’t seen his brother for some time. He isn’t exactly happy to see Rain as she is very abrasive person, but he will do anything to have the chance to raise a baby he can call his own. He promises that if she keeps the baby and if she can stay sober until she gives birth, he will pay her a sum of money, and she can leave. Shirlene has no idea how she can persuade Cameron of what has really happened, but even he notices the differences in her as he takes her back to his small apartment in Philly. She finally confesses what had happened and it is Shirlene’s complete transformation of the Rain he knew, plus everything she knew that Rain never could, that persuades him of the truth. Shirlene is desperate to see Stan, only to find him in hospital after falling too ill to be home alone. She asks Cameron to help her take Stan home to their house, instead of a hospice, to allow him to die at home. But her being in a new body means she won’t be waiting for him when he dies now and that causes her to worry. Shirlene has to get used to this new body she is inhabiting, but the joy of motherhood once again, makes her too happy to worry about any problems that might occur. But she should be worried, as the life that ended too soon, has decided they weren’t quite ready to leave and will try to persuade Shirlene to give up on her second chance at life and a possible romance with Cameron. Lots more happens to Shirlene as she navigates this new life with her best friend Hattie still by her side, as Cameron gets another shocking piece of news to throw his life further into turmoil. A story that really makes you think about what you might do with a second chance at life and what you might do differently, but also having faith in love and trust in others, even what it may be hard to do. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Sometimes, you read a book, where if you can just suspend disbelief, the story is so transporting and engrossing that you wish it wouldn’t end. Soul Dancing by Gail Priest was that book for me.
Shirlene Foster is a ninety-year-old woman who dies and wakes up in the body of a 20-year-old tattooed, pierced Rain DeLuca. Add to the mix that she’s being told to push, because she’s about to give birth!
From there, the story gets more complex. Shirlene is dead, except she’s not, because now she’s in Rain’s body. And she’s suddenly the mother she always wished she could be. Plus, there’s a handsome, loveable, baby-daddy who doesn’t understand why Rain has changed. And Shirlene, in Rain’s body, doesn’t understand why the baby’s father appears not to hate her.
Plus, Shirlene’s beloved elderly husband is still alive and grieving for her loss. How could she let him continue to grieve when she’s right here? But, at twenty, she looks nothing like the woman he loved. If she tries to be honest, will he even believe her?
I loved how Shirlene opts for honesty and as a result, she gets to start life again in Rain’s body. But it comes with many challenges, including discovering that her beloved husband wasn’t always honest about everything, and being surprised to find herself falling for hot baby-daddy, Cameron.
Soul Dancing is a complex, you won’t see it coming, type of read. The novel weaves a credible tale of love – both between Shirlene and her husband, and now with Cameron.
The author’s portrayal of a ninety-year-old character in a younger body emphasizes the growth that wisdom brings. It’s sad that most ninety-year-olds don’t get the chance, and made me reconsider my pre-conceptions about ageing.
Certain novels stick with you, and Soul Dancing is a novel I won’t forget. I know it will live in my psyche, bringing hope and the power of enduring love during hard times.
An imaginative, emotional, romantic, original, seriously-couldn’t-put-it down book!
Five big juicy “you don’t want to miss this one” stars from me!
Life, love, death—and everything after—motivate Shirlene Foster’s decisions in “Soul Dancing,” Gail Priest’s new supernatural romance. In her 90s, with cancer devastating her body, Shirlene is about to leave this mortal plane and the husband with whom she has shared everything for decades. But fearing he will not last long without her, Shirlene is reluctant to let go and pass peacefully.
She who hesitates is lost, no? In Shirlene’s case, literally so as she discovers herself in the body of 20-year-old Rain DeLuca, who is about to give birth. How did this happen? How does Shirlene get back to her beloved husband, Stan? And how can she possibly give up the sweet baby girl who knows only Shirlene as her mother? Complicating Shirlene’s out-of-the-body experience is the baby’s uncle, Cameron Michaels, who has vowed to raise the child in place of his irresponsible brother and promised to pay off Rain, the infant’s equally irresponsible mother, to get her out of the picture.
In Shirlene and Cameron, author Priest has created flawed, believable characters thrust by something—maybe fate, maybe faith—into unbelievable circumstances. With each twist of their winding road, I found myself rooting for this unlikeliest of couples and hoping Shirlene and Cameron would find a lasting way to each other.
More importantly, I marveled how wonderful it would be if the afterlife was just that: another life with new promise and the opportunity to redeem, redirect, and rededicate oneself to something, or someone, greater.
“Soul Dancing” explores glorious possibilities. Read it and get a glimpse into what might come next for any of us.
Gail Priest's novel "Soul Dancing" is a truly special read that left a deep impression on me. The author masterfully takes the reader on an emotional journey that is both moving and uplifting.
The novel not only explores the beauty of love and motherhood but also delves deeply into the pain of loss. Perhaps one of the most touching elements of the book is its deep exploration of the pain and guilt of losing a child, written so genuinely and sensitively that the reader feels as if they are breathing with the protagonist. Another strength of the story is its portrayal of a lifetime of love and care, and its exploration of the depths of forgiveness and regret.
Gail Priest also deals with difficult issues such as grief, alcoholism and drug addiction, which are presented with extraordinary empathy and credibility. These themes not only enrich the story, but also lead the reader to deeper self-reflection.
The main character of the novel is a woman who has been through a lot, but is given a second chance in life. A second chance to motherhood, to love and to re-discover her own dreams and desires. The story reminds us that it is never too late to start again and that even the greatest pain can be healed.
Overall, "Soul Dancing" is a book that will touch the heart of every reader. I recommend it to anyone who loves emotional, deeply human stories. This novel not only entertains but also thought-provoking and leaves a lasting impression on the reader's soul.
I received a free copy of "Soul Dancing" by Gail Priest via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
"Soul Dancing" is a tour de force of the imagination. Gail Priest's narrative skill is on full display as she expertly crafts a story that blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural. With its intimate exploration of the afterlife and the journey of the soul, the novel presents a thought-provoking premise that keeps readers guessing until the very end. Priest's portrayal of the protagonist, Shirlene, navigating multiple lives is both compelling and immersive, drawing readers into a world where the boundaries of what we believe and how we identify ourselves are fluid.
While firmly rooted in the paranormal fiction genre, "Soul Dancing" stands out for its fresh perspective and unexpected twists. Priest keeps readers engaged with a plot that is as unpredictable as it is captivating, weaving together themes of love, purpose, and redemption with masterful finesse.
From the tender moments of reflection to those of suspense, each page of "Soul Dancing" is a testament to Priest's talent for storytelling. This novel is the perfect combination of compelling characters, a captivating plot, excellent writing, and a satisfying story that will delight readers and continue to enhance Priest’s reputation as a storyteller extraordinaire.
Soul Dancing by Gail Priest is a story about second chances. It’s a story about love. The characters are unique, with intriguing backstories that offer reasons for their actions. The characters are integral to the plot. The description is vivid and alive. Priest helps the reader blur the lines of belief that someone can die and then inhabit another’s body. And best of all, the novel moves along crisply.
At the heart of this story is Shirlene Foster, an elderly woman who dies at the start of the novel. But her spirit lives on in another body. Cameron Michaels is the upstanding person who takes in his brother’s pregnant girlfriend to care for her before the baby is born. Both Shirlene and Cameron need to move past their prior sorrows. Grudges can keep people from loving again, from living life fully.
Trust is important to the characters in this novel. Trust can’t happen spontaneously. It needs to be felt deep within a person. Priest’s characters need to learn this along the way. The pacing of this novel is impeccable.
Soul Dancing also shows the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness is important for siblings and parents, as well as spouses, friends, or lovers. Most importantly, forgiveness is necessary for the self to move on in life. Gail Priest’s novel shows this power through story. Right up until the end. If you are looking for the perfect read, you can’t do better than Soul Dancing by Gail Priest.
This paranormal love story isn’t full of ghosts or creepy things. Instead, it is charged with emotion and packed with vivid events that allow you to connect with these remarkable characters.
Shirlene is 90 years old when she dies and leaves her beloved husband, Stan. But she is shocked when she wakes up in the body of a woman about to give birth.
What follows is Shirlene’s second chance at life, at motherhood, and possibly love. The story becomes very intertwined as Shirlene is torn between staying in this new life and feeling the pull to go to be with Stan (once he passes) and her late son.
While this could have been just a reincarnation, second chance story, the author takes it further. There’s turmoil as Shirlene is fighting to remain in this new body. Some twists, turns, and details make this story very emotional, believable, and intriguing.
Body-hopping or “Soul Dancing” is not new and is often saved for the sci-fi genre. Yet this story has such a personal and emotional twist that most readers will find it engaging and enjoyable.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @gailpriest_author for a spot on tour and a gifted book.
If we could, how many of us would want a second try at life? And what would that be like? I’ve thought about it, even if for a little while. But reality intervenes, and that's where it stops. In author Priest’s novel Soul Dancing, we get to see that scenario played out, and it’s done with such heartfelt originality that I found it believable. With her ninety-year-old mind and twenty-year-old body, Shirlene gets a second opportunity for motherhood and love. It begins with her giving birth, a perfect allegory for new beginnings. This story encompasses a long-concealed secret and the timeless question: can we love more than one person at the same time? I especially liked how each character enhanced the setting in the book, particularly Hattie, who is Shirlene’s long-time friend. Spry and loyal, she is the embodiment of a genuine friend. The story’s charm is its uniqueness, but on a deeper level, what resonated more with me was the underlying theme that people are capable of giving time and time again. Soul Dancing examines the full range of what-ifs, right to its hopeful conclusion. An intriguing story that makes for a great read.
Soul Dancing by Gail Priest is a tale of identity, second chances, and twists of fate. When ninety-year-old Shirlene Foster finds her soul inside another woman's body after her death, the story takes off. Shirlene's struggle to navigate her new reality is compelling and, surprisingly, relatable. The clash between Shirlene's wisdom and her newly ignited youthful physical desires is thought-provoking. The relationship that develops between Shirlene and Cameron Michaels adds another layer of tension and excitement to the narrative. However, it's the secondary character of Hattie, Shirlene’s 90-year-old best friend, who steals my heart. Throughout the novel, Priest explores themes of love, loss, addiction, and depression. With its compelling characters and thought-provoking themes, Soul Dancing is a must-read for anyone who enjoys tales of love, redemption, and the mysteries of the human soul.
Soul Dancer starts with an astounding turn of events. Shirlene Foster has lived a long life and is dying of cancer. When Stan, her husband of 70 years tells her it’s okay to let go, she resists. By a fluke of fate she is reborn into the body of young Rain, who at that very moment is giving birth to a baby girl in the company of a young man, Cameron, who Shirlene assumes is the baby’s father. And that is only the beginning of the many challenges she must navigate as an old woman in a younger woman’s body. She now has an infant to care for, a relationship with a man she doesn’t know, and a 90-year old husband who needs her. Thus begins the complicated dance of Shirlene/Rain and the soul-searching it prompts in all the people whose lives she touches. It’s a hearfelt story of love and loss, remembrance and forgiveness.
The title is perfect for this book. When ninety year old, Shirlene dies from cancer, she feels like she needs to be there for her husband, Stan. So instead of going into the light and reuniting with her dead son, she ends up in the body of a 20 year old woman named Rain who is giving birth.
Rain/Shirlene must balance new motherhood, taking care of her elderly husband, and dealing with the complexities of Rain’s past.
The book gets even more complex as Shirlene develops feelings for Rain’s baby daddy brother, Cameron.
I found it interesting how people easily believed that Shirlene’s soul was in someone else’s body. It really caused me pause on the soul and how the soul can transform the physical body.
I also loved Shirlene’s best friend since childhood, Hattie. Hattie is ninety years old and still working part time as a lawyer.
Soul Dancing By Gail Priest waltzes into your mind, tap-dances through your emotions, and thrills the reader like a good Tango. This book delivers at every level: plot, setting, and characters. The character arc was my favorite part, as the twists and turns of a most clever plot unfolded the array of emotions and the secrets uncovered made me feel that I met an interesting and complex group of people, The settings and scenery took me to fun places of my youth. The writing was tight and fabulous, and I felt transported to the homes of the characters. It’s an intricate and complex book while still delivering a sort of feel-good simplicity.
A mind boggling read that’s going to take you on the twisted path we all walk, and sharply curve. It’s hard to not give anything away in this one but it was so beautiful the way the author incorporated the stories!
We start with a woman on her death bed, her husband next to her, and we transition very suddenly to a woman who is currently in childbirth. The interconnected lives are so emotionally written and the author did SUCH a good job keeping me guessing the entire time!
Thank you to the author and suzzy approved book tours!
I love when I'm surprised by a unique storyline that pulls me in right away and doesn't let go. This beautiful story shows love in many forms, forgiveness, and second chances. Shirlene is a fantastic character and Cameron an honorable man that deserves an honorable woman. I love the Cape Henlopen mention as I've enjoyed vacationing there, and I've also been to a meditation labyrinth and fortunately all went as planned. There are surprises and twists in this incredible book and this is one you don't want to miss out on!
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Shirlene lays dying, and then.. she finds herself in a young woman's body giving birth. How will she convince her best friend Hattie who she really is? How can she fit into this life she finds herself with? Who is Cam, the handsome stranger that is the baby's uncle? Can she come to terms with her previous life? What happens when the young woman wants to take her body back? This book is about second chances and about enduring love. The characters are engaging and the story is captivating. Put this on your must read list.
Gail Priest has outdone herself with this amazing book. I was hooked on the book from the very first chapter. When ninety-year-old Shirlene Foster dies, her soul takes her on the ride of her life. Shirlene soon finds herself inhabiting the body of a young woman in the process of giving birth. This is a beautiful love story wrapped carefully inside of a ghost story. There is enough twists and turns to this story to keep you mesmerized to the very last page.
If you're looking for an imaginative and immersive love story, this is for you. Soul Dancing is about the real meaning of love -- an old married couple's undying love for each other, a young couple's irresistible attraction, and a parent's love for a child, whether the child is his or not. You don't have to believe in reincarnation (but it doesn't hurt if you're willing to keep an open mind). The story is a work of the imagination. And the twists at the end create a satisfying resolution.
Even as a writer myself I am often amazed at the stories that other writer's come up with! Soul Dancing is one of those. What a wild ride this book was. A ninety-year old woman dies and is going "towards the light" when she realizes she can't leave her elderly husband behind. She fights to return and suddenly finds herself in a twenty-year-olds body giving birth. That is just the start of all the twists and turns! This is a story about love, redemption and second chances! Recommended.
Gail Priest strikes gold in this moving, inventive story of a ninety-year-old woman who dies and pops back into another woman’s body--while she’s giving birth. The pace and tension build into a true page-turner as Shirlene struggles to acclimate herself—and those around her—to her new reality. Told from alternating female and male points of view, Soul Dancing is a lovely, memorable exploration of second chances, regrets, mother / fatherhood, and romance.
Popping out of the gate with a mystical, magical premise, Gail Priest’s enchanting Soul Dancing is a tender meditation on do-overs. With a cast of warm-hearted characters on an oh so human quest for goodness and love, Soul Dancing ponders the question of how to honor the past while striving for a future. Once you open the book, you won’t want to put it down.
Unique premise for this story, which I loved, and of course, Gail's writing style just flies across the page like the wind. I was instantly drawn into the lives of these characters and ached for them throughout. There was a bit of whiplash in the second half of the book, which wasn't for me, but I was happy to see the story come together in the end.
If you like unique and unexpected stories you need to pick up this book. A beautifully written second chance romance with a mix of paranormal that was simply captivating. A story about, love, loss and second chances with an original twist.
Thank you Suzy Approved Book Tours for this tour invite.
Soul Dancing is a more than a 5 star read for me! I love books that change one body for another. In this book, it happens twice. I was not ready for this book to end. I wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters later on. This is my first book by Gail Priest, and it won't be my last!
