The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - Visual Companion

Rate this book
Introduced by Sir Ian McKellen, the final Visual Companion in the series sees the desolation of Smaug the Magnificent, and the ruination of The Battle of the Five Armies.

The destruction of Lake-town leaves its inhabitants wandering through the ruins of Dale, looking to Bard to lead them in rebuilding their lives. Destitute, all eyes turn towards the Lonely Mountain and the promised payment of a debt.

Under the command of Sauron, Azog the Defiler prepares to unleash a terrible army, the likes of which the Third Age has never seen. All hope rests upon uniting the free peoples of Middle-earth in the fight against evil, and Bilbo Baggins holds a powerful key to striking up a bargain…

Follow the last journey of Thorin Oakenshield’s Company as the fight for the vast wealth of the Lonely Mountain continues on to a devastating conclusion.

I got this one for cheap on Bookoutlet. Being an HUGE fan of Tolkien books, movie adaptation, I even own The Ring. So I though I should buy this one. Nothing extraordinary, but beautiful pictures and the text present/explain the universe, the characters, the races, and more of this particular movie but also of the Tolkien world in general. Not necessary but the hardcore fans should like it. I did!

While some images were of great quality and interesting (being able to analyse the little things in the background of shots only quickly glimpsed in the movies), many - if not most - of the pictures were low quality, blurry, and clearly a direct screenshot from someone watching the movies.

The information was surface level stuff, only occasionally giving interesting facts, and featuring way too many story inaccuracies and writing errors.

"The Battle of the Fives Armies" was SO emotional!!! I was crying at the end because a) Thorin died b)Kili and Fili died c) Last LOTR thing EVER d)Bilbo left the dwarves!!!!! The movies were AMAZING...perfect....and the casting was spot on. Anyway, this book really captured the soul of the movie, and I recommend it to any Tolkien fans.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies--
Visual Companion
by Jude Fisher

This book is dramatically different than the Official Movie Guide, above. Since this book is considerably smaller in volume than the movie guide, by necessity, I will keep the review, here, short.

First, it is half the size of the official guide, coming in at 86 pages. In addition, this edition is the hardcover edition and has a glossy, embossed dust jacket. This cover is even more attractive than the one for the official guide. Moreover, the beautiful pages are semi-glossy, and like the official guide, it contains beautiful photographs of scenes and characters in the movie. The hardcover edition costs (as of the date of this posting) $12.52, similar in price to the official movie guide. This book would look lovely on any coffee table or book display.

Having already given you what I liked of the book, now to what I don't like. Unfortunately, like the book, above, this book is lacking in any meaningful content addressing The Battle of the Five Armies. While I wouldn't expect to have the same quantity or quality of content as an official movie guide, it, nonetheless, fails to give even what the official movie guide provided.

The book began with a review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, then going on to review, The Desolation of Smaug. From the beginning to page 29, the book rehashes both of the previous two movies. The rest of the book (page 30 to 86, a total of 57 pages) contains topics of the following:
36 pages of full page photographs

[7]
Bard & The Black Arrow
The Lonely Mtn./Erebor
Gold & its Corrupting Power
The men of Lake Town
The Rings of Power/Sauron
Alliances/Heroes
The Elves
The King Under the Mountain
The Eagles
The Forces of Evil
and, Dreams of Hope

[8]

None of these topics really have anything to do with The Battle of the Five Armies--even visually, which is what this book is suppose to be: a Visual Companion. Nothing here about a battle of any sort. So, my conclusion is that this book is as lacking in substance as the Official Movie Guide, above.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS AND RATING FOR THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES: VISUAL COMPANION BY JUDE FISHER:

As with the official movie guide, above, I find this book acceptable to persons of a general audience. I cannot speak to whether or not the movie will be objectionable to viewing audiences because it is a different visual medium.

Moreover, given the reasons I have listed, above, I rate this book at 2.5 stars out of 5.0 stars. And, like the previous book, I do give the creator(s) credit for the beautiful cover, pages, and photographs. However, the content lacks anything to be desired; hence, the low rating.

Thank you for joining me this week as we took a look at some of the hype surrounding the much-anticipated movie, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The highly-waited for movie debuts on December 17th in theaters. Again, thank you for joining me and taking time to read and consider the ideas I've presented in my blog post.

While I did not find that either of the two books that I reviewed today were especially good books, I have discovered that not all books I read are great books. I believe you have a right to know when I find books of poor quality, as I do when I find books of great quality and interest. I want you to save your money and even more importantly, your valuable time reading these books.

God bless you and I hope you are reading something really wonderful this week. I look forward to being with you again next week when we will be looking at a wholly different subject and genre.

Until next time...

...many happy pages of reading!

I send you all my love this holiday season!

The third visual companion for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, this volume provides background information on the final instalment, The Battle of The Five Armies. Following the trend of Fisher's earlier visual companions for both Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, this is aimed at younger readers, the language and detail rather simple and uncomplicated. I'm enough of a fan to want to buy and read this book, but I would prefer a bit more complexity to what I'm reading. That said, this book will give the reader more background information than the films about the people, creatures, places and elements that make up The Hobbit, often using a mishmash of the films, Tolkien's writings and the back-stories developed for the films.

Additionally, this edition has a couple of typos which, while forgivable, is disappointing.

I really enjoyed this book.

I liked the information and the pictures that were in here.

I would not recommend reading this one unless you have seen all three books just so you don't get spoiled for the previous movies and this one.

I wish this one had more information than it did but I still enjoyed what was in here. There were somethings that I wanted to see but they did not include some of the things I was hoping it would but I still liked what was in the book.

The pictures that were in this book from the movie were great and I enjoyed them. They were really neat.

I really enjoyed this final book in the companion books for the hobbit movies.

Excitement is building! What I liked the most was hearing about how things are going to happen in the movie and hearing about the battle that's about to happen and all of the players. I mostly liked hearing about Thorin and how he was not the same after setting foot back into Erebor. Cannot wait to see this movie!

I love The Hobbit so much, and was thrilled to get this for Christmas! I loved it so much, and there are no spoilers to the movie in there, so read freely if you have yet to seen The Battle Of Five Armies!

This is a great read now that I'm still going through this battle of the five stages of denial that The Hobbit movies are over and that there will be no more Middle-earth films...for now...

Precioso libro con unas magnificas fotografías acompañadas de un texto que resume todo lo ocurrido en las tres películas de El Hobbit.
