CELEBRATING THE 90th ANNIVERSARY OF DONALD DUCK AND THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF...WOLVERINE? In the most unexpected mashup of our time, we travel to the near future where chaos rules as PETE-SKULL has turned DUCKBURG into a super-hero-less WASTELAND. Only OLD DUCK DONALD can turn the tide but he's given up his battling' days and prefers naps and GRANDMA's apple pie over fighting villains. But when MICKEY-HAWKEYE comes knocking at the door with GOOFY-HULK at his side, WOLVERINE-DONALD has to make a choice! Will a trip down memory lane change his mind to save the world or will the lure of the backyard hammock and a long nap keep him from popping his claws one last time? Featuring some of DONALD-WOLVERINE'S greatest moments!
I want so so bad to fall in love with this comic spinoff especially since it crosses over two of my favorite characters but just like most have claimed, by far the biggest reason only to get this silly near pointless issue would be for the fantastic artwork like there’s one page of Donald as essentially every Wolverine iteration and for .5 seconds I was like okay now we are getting somewhere. But nope they just gave us a tension less tale with the least creative naming I’ve ever heard like what am I supposed to do with goofy-hulk. 2.5/5
Man... I wanted this to be SO much better than it was. You barely saw Donald in the suit. I did like the flash back scenes and the lore behind which Disney characters were what heroes... But that's about it. :( bummer
I lost count of the missed opportunities. Donald-Wolverine, not Donald Duckverine or Donald the Duckverine, or just Duckverine? Goofy-Hulk, not Gulk? Mr Goofy-Fixit, not Mr Goofit, and good-naturedly a-hyucks the change into the (non)monster? Pluto-Colossus, not Plutossus? Mickey-Hawkeye, not Mickeye or Mawkeye or Mickey Mouseye? Pete-Skull has a red dog face and not a skull? Gyro isn't a Richards or a Stark? COME ON.
2 stars for a comic with 5-star art tells you what I thought of the story.
The Duckverine's love of "healing" naps was cute, though.
Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine #1 features exceptional artwork, though the story offers little beyond Easter eggs for Marvel and Disney fans. The concept—iconic Disney characters taking on superhero personas—has the potential for a fun, lighthearted romp. However, the parody names, such as Donald-Wolverine and Mickey-Hawkeye, are too obvious. Even if they weren’t, they represent the comic’s only attempt at humor, making it a painfully unfunny read.
Like I've noticed with a lot of readers, I really went into this wanting to love it. And while I did like it, it really just didn't hook me. There were some cool homages thrown in, but the story itself just seemed kinda there. The art was cool, and it wasn't what I'd call bad, just wasn't what it could have been.
Maybe 2.25-2.5 stars for a cute idea and art, but I'm too disappointed to round any higher than that. When you've got Disney's very G rated, kid friendly Donald Duck and Marvel's often R rated for mature audiences Wolverine, I knew it would end be a childish comic. When Donald enters public domain in 2030 he might be ready to do a decent Wolverine, but this really didn't even try. The anger thing wasn't Wolverine, it's a Hulk feature so I agree with another reviewer who said it should be Hulk Donald. Seeing that there's a What If Donald as Thor coming next he may have a Hulk feature down the line, but this issue was enough of a cash grab for me. Mickey was adorable as Hawkeye, though, even if he was swimming in the costume the whole time.
I stumbled across this at a local comic book store and was super excited seeing my favorite Disney character being portrayed as wolverine. I picked up the angry Donald variant which seeing all the covers online, I think I grabbed the best one. As for the story inside… subpar. Definitely could’ve done without Mickey-Hawkeye… was pretty disappointed to see him in a comic for one of my favorite characters & wish it was more focused on Donald as wolverine without the cameo characters. All-in-all, a great cover for 5$ to be wall art!
Supposed to celebrate the anniversaries of Donald Duck (90th birthday!) and Wolverine (50 years and counting), but it's a jarring mash-up that isn't their best work.
What can I say that hasn't been said already? It's a kiddo friendly 'Old Man Logan' lite story...and Disney characters. This could have been a unique origin story, not this 'one last mission' THING.
Bleh! You KNOW you're going to see fanboys with these characters as tattoos any day now.
Silly, very fun art, I guess yeah it would make sense if Donald Hulked out but they really needed to merge these very specific characters together so I guess that works. Making Mickey Hawkeye felt too random though lmao I bought this more as a fun commemorative thing than for the story itself, so I guess im less disappointed lol I also like how they're all superhero/villain alter egos and Scrooge is still Scrooge nagging Donald. He can never catch a break lmaoo
I actually like the art, but the story is so dumb it almost feels sacrilegious. What else? Old Man Logan wasn’t the obvious choice of all the Wolverine eras but it was probably the worst one. Also, the English translation lacks finesse—the script is a bit stilted. Overall, like Infinite Dime but to a lesser degree, this is more embarrassing than anything. This Marvel/Duck experiment is a failure.
It's a good read for children, but it doesn't really is a What If bout Wolverine and Donald Duck, it's just a one shot of Old Logan badly written. Donald duck doesn't wear wolverine's suit and, being something with Disney characters, doesn't have any real fight. Anyway, its really good for children.
