Last Train is a contemporary novel set in Ireland. Two boys destroy a fence, allowing cattle to stray onto a nearby train line, causing a major rail disaster. One of the passengers on the stricken train is philanderer and radio talk show host Frank Sheriff. Seriously injured, his faltering relationship with Julia Wright, a doctor at a Dublin hospital, is suddenly intensified.Over the course of Frank's recovery, Julia begins to unravel details of his sinister family background, including deception, political corruption and death threats. In distancing herself from their relationship, Julia eventually realises Frank had good reason for his guarded approach to love.In a naive attempt to hide the truth, the boys responsible for the train crash embark on a terrifying journey involving kidnap, torture and much worse.Last Train also leads us through Julia's past which, considering her history of personal loss, reveals a woman of value, humour and remarkable resilience.
