The Haunted Major

Rate this book
Brilliantly observed and superbly characterised, The Haunted Major recounts the epic golfing match between the outrageously pompous Major and the reigning Open Champion, Jim Lindsay. The prize? The chance to propose to the captivating (and extremely wealthy) Mrs Gunter. Despite being 'the finest sportsman living', the Major despises golf, has never played it and considers a week's practice in secret in his hotel bedroom at St Andrews quite enough to whip the upstart. But events take an unexpected turn with the appearances of the ghostly Cardinal. . .

I stumbled upon this in a collection entitled "Scottish Ghosts: Ghouls, Ghosts, and Beasties" (which I purchased in Dublin, Ireland). It's almost perfect (perhaps a bit repetitive and the accents are sometimes challenging) but it's often very funny. If you love humourous ghosties, seek this out!

Original, humoristic and great approach to a horror story. The story and accompanying illustrations had me cracking up several times. Though the story in itself is hardly scary, it's an enticing read, even for non-golf lovers.

Golf sort of a supernatural game anyway. This book just goes a little further.
