Up From Scapegoating: Awakening Consciousness in Groups

Rate this book
If one chooses to be different, it is important to understand how the group to be challenged will accommodate diversity. Many groups defend themselves against the different, the new, and the perceived negative, by collectively rejecting this element through the creation of a scapegoat. To accommodate diversity, Colman explores ways individuals and groups can grow beyond the continual theme of scapegoating.

Brilliant thank you. One of those books that could change the world for the better. But the world not yet ready for it. The question I have is, why? Why does this phenomenon occur?

I have two possible explanations, but I'm hoping someone with more insight can expand.

From what I can tell it happens if 1) the book was poorly distributed, or 2) the book was ahead of its time.

Gatsby was already listed as an example of the second, and to an extent Moby Dick was as well, but everyone forgets distribution. When a work is freely available to anyone, or cheap to purchase the rights to by a big company, then suddenly you'll see a lot more people reading it. Gatsby literally being handed out for free to soldiers in WWII probably helped it gain popularity. Although not a book, It's a Wonderful Life was only popular after becoming so cheap to license that tv companies played it as much as possible.
