Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, The Five Shields: The Lost Souls, is such a book.

Author Ilan Dvir weaves a fantastic sci-fi fantasy tale, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader's attention from the beginning. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.

The book description says it all; 'A sharp knock in the middle of the night awakens Henri and Aline. They discover on their doorstep a swaddled baby with only a mysterious ring wrapped in her blankets. They decide to keep their find a secret and tell the world she is theirs, not knowing that every secret comes at a price. They name her Rose.

On their thirteenth birthdays, Rose and four other teenagers from across the globe discover that they are The Five Shields, tasked with protecting the world’s fate and the balance of good and evil. All they have in common is a mysterious, powerful gem. On a life-changing journey, they discover untold powers hidden within them.

The Five Shields must fight to free the lost souls before it is too late. But first they must defeat sinister, dark forces hell-bent on their total destruction. If the Shields succeed, light will triumph; if they fail, darkness will reign. Who will prevail?'

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out! But I will say it's well worth the read. It's my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.

This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a spellbinding journey!

It’s one of those books that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that the younger reader of the sci-fi fantasy genre will love having a nibble on this one!

If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Ilan Dvir in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. Five stars from me.

Fantasy as a genre has enthralled us since time immemorial. This is liked by children and adults alike. Fight between light and dark forces is also eternal.

Jess, May, Johnny, Rose and Kiyoshi have a secret. On their 13th birthday they come to know that they possess shields with gems in them. They are the soldiers of light forces against the darkness. They are set on a journey to find a scroll and set free the persons of light.

It is a thrilling ride. The book kept me hooked and I liked the fantastic elements. Though the story is same as told countless times it is still enjoyable. I liked the chemistry between the five. This is book one and I hope Ilan Dvir writes next instalment and the book ended with a hint of further books.

The Five Shields And The Lost Souls by Ilan Dvir - Now Or Never

The Five Shields And The Lost Souls by Ilan Dvir is a has 29 chapters. This is an interesting story of five teenagers. Thus it qualifies for readers of any genre. The story is of five teenagers hailing from various parts of the world. These five teenagers discover at the time of their thirteenth birthday that they are not normal children. In fact, they are carrying some extraordinary shielding or protecting powers for the purpose of sustaining a balance between good and evil. Each of them has a mysterious and powerful gem in possession. Though they have abundant energies and powers, the missions they are going to undertake requires more than that. This mission is about to change their lives forever. In fact, they are about to start a new journey of their life to face daunting tasks and a difficult mission and powerful enemies to fight against.

Rose is one of those teenagers having mysterious powers. Thirteen years back Henri and Aline hear a sharp knock on their door in the middle of the night. Upon opening the door they find a newborn baby on their doorstep. The baby has a mysterious ring in her blanket. The couple decides to keep the baby as their own child without revealing it to anybody that she is not their own child. But they didn't realize at that moment that every secret on this earth carries a price tag. Neither Rose could, being too young at that time. For the young kids after realizing their powers, that first task ahead is to free the lost souls before the things go out of control. But that can happen only after defeating Darco and his men. And if it doesn't happen, the balance of all existence will go haywire.

The ultimate goal of the five children is to ensure the equilibrium between good and evil in The Five Shields And The Lost Souls by Ilan Dvir. Their fight is against sinister behind the dark forces of Darco. They have to win at any cost to avoid total destruction. It is, in fact, a fight between light and dark where light has to triumph. Because if light loses, darkness will grab the total control and then nobody will be able to survive. The five shields have to prevail. Melvin, Ben, Jasmine, Rose, and May have to fight and win at any cost.

In The Five Shields: The Lost Souls, Henri and Aline discover a swaddled baby on their doorstep with a mysterious ring wrapped in her blankets. They decide to pretend the baby is theirs, and name her Rose. On her thirteenth birthday, Rose realizes she’s one of the Five Shields, tasked with protectin the balance of good and evil. Along with four others, she has to save the world.

The plot is very fast-paced and although not that original (in parts similar to a variety of other young hero / chosen ones stories out there) it is entertaining, and we dive into the action right away. It’s ideal for middle graders and young adults, but even adults will enjoy the imaginative tale.

Fun read, and looking forward to next adventure.

I would have given this story 4.5 if I could. There were a few sentences that I had to read several times to clarify the meaning. These were things that a good editor show old have caught.
