This volume had so much potential for depth, but the pacing totally undermined it. Yuu's story is incredibly sad and tragic and I wished we got to sit with him longer to really see him rebuild his relationship with the MC slowly and meaningfully. Instead, it felt rushed. Like, one date and suddenly the MC is trying to win him back? I needed more breathing room, more vulnerability, more of Yuu's past and pain.

And don't even get me started on the intimacy timing. They have sex right after Yuu explains his trauma? That didn’t sit right with me. I wanted softness. I wanted the MC to coddle him, to hold him, to let the emotional weight settle before building up to a super tender and meaningful sex scene. That would’ve hit so much harder.

Then there’s the old man. Ugh… Selfish and stupid doesn't even cover it. He’s keeping Yuu as a “kept man” while having a wife and kid? He could’ve just helped Yuu, housed him, supported him, healed his wounds, without all the gross, selfish intimacy. Using Yuu as some kind of atonement for his past mistakes? Wrong. Help him for his sake, not yours.

I mean, get it somehow … the old man is trapped in a life that isn’t his truth. And part of me sympathizes. But he chose that path. He doesn’t get to drag Yuu into his mess to ease his own guilt.

There were beautiful moments here, but the rushed pace and questionable choices kept this from being the powerful story it could’ve been. The artstyle is beautiful tho.

3.5 stars. This story was soooo very very sad. I feel like it should have been fleshed out over 2 volumes coz of how heavy this story actually is.

This was a very difficult and sad story, but with a happy end. Yuu has grown up unloved and so doesn’t believe he deserves love. He confesses to Ryosuke anyway, before leaving town for good. Six years later, Ryosuke finally finds Yuu in Tokyo. The latter is a kept man, the only kind of love he thinks he’s worth of, so he tries to push Ryosuke away.

But Ryosuke isn’t about to give up on Yuu. He loves Yuu and wants them to be together. Some corners are cut in the story for the two to become a pair. The story ends there so the readers don’t learn if Yuu’s insecurities will cause them trouble later. For now, everything is well and both are happy, and willing to make the effort for their HEA. Art was good.

This was a beautifully told one shot about childhood friends who were in love, but separated, and their reunion as adults. One is dealing with trauma that has affected his ability to get close to anyone. It's heartbreaking, but these two are absolutely precious together, and their love is pure and healing.

I don't want him to know.
I want him to save me.
"Thank you for never forgetting me."

Oh my god I could cry.

I love stories like this -- stories about trauma and pain and being saved. I can't help it. It's written in my bones.

Yuu's story is heartbreaking, and I think Yosumi portrayed his varying levels of trauma response extremely well -- I especially loved the GUILT eating at him at the idea that he could have a happy ending when his mother didn't. God. That was done... so well.

And Ryousuke was also perfect -- determined and patient in equal measures, willing to wait for Yuu and rebuild their relationship slowly, and never push past the boundaries Yuu sets up, yet also determined to not let him go again. He was so perfect for Yuu, for someone with Yuu's story. He's exactly the kind of person Yuu needs, which is probably also why Yuu fell in love with him to begin with.

I am going to be thinking about this manga for a long time.

TW: book contains sexual abuse, child abuse, suicide, and other adult themes. This boy's love has sad, heart-wrenching moments. Was there a warning for me before I started the book? Nope! But I wish it did so I could prepare myself mentally and emotionally. I thought there would be more to the plot, more cute outings, a little more drama and tension between the two main characters. Where was sexual tension? Just a small dose would've helped show how the two have such strong feelings for the other. Some dialogue choices were a bit rough to read, could very well be because of the translation. Overall, a decent stand-alone manga.

It was pretty short, so I wasn't going into it with crazy expectations to tell me a deep story, but for what it was, it was a fine read. Classic childhood friends separate and reconnect in adulthood. We get some back story as to why the main love interest ran away but outside of 'I ran away because of trauma' and then that being the reason he can't love it felt pretty plain and really only for shock value. With it being a quick read, I understand it wasn't going to dive into any deeper themes, but it feels a little throw away to add such a tragic back story to not really explore that.

People have hidden sides to them that it takes a long time to come out. In this manga, that makes the ML run from the person he is closest to and also from himself. It's a story about working through the horrible things that life throws at you and hopefully finding someone to help you.

This is a wildly dark story that doesn't really prepare you for that. Wavering on the star rating because some of the story and interactions could've been developed more, but I did really love the art style and character designs. Would definitely try other stories by Yosumi.

The opening premise is pretty simple: Ryousuke and Yuu are best friends with a deep attachment to one another. On a scorching summer day on their way home from school (I think), Yuu tells Ryousuke that he likes him. "In that way." Then, before Ryousuke can respond, Yuu tells him he didn't need an answer and dashes off.

Ryousuke spends the weekend thinking about what he'll say to Yuu on Monday morning, since the truth is, he's been in love with Yuu, too, this entire time! It's a sweet school love story with no problems in sight.

Except on Monday, Ryousuke finds out that Yuu transferred schools and moved to Tokyo. He's also either changed phones or blocked Ryousuke, so Ryousuke has no way to contact him. In one fell swoop, he's lost his best friend and his first love.

And six years later, he's still hurting from it.

I honestly could not figure out the timeline, though, because we get so many dates that don't seem to line up?

In the opening scene, they're talking about being second years in high school, with college entrance exams coming up the next year. In a much later chapter, this is referenced again. However, in multiple other spots during the flashbacks, it seems like they were in middle school? It could be that they'd just met then and carried their friendship throughout high school, but in the flashback where Yuu's mom caught his stepdad in his room with him, Yuu looked younger? So I don't know. Plus if it's been six years since they parted ways, is Ryousuke in grad school now? Unless he's maybe in his final year of university? But there's also a line saying that he's only been in Tokyo, where he moved for university to try to find Yuu, for two years? So ???

The key point is that they've been apart for longer than they knew each other, and they've both grown up a lot in the meantime. Ryousuke is a (wildly handsome) popular guy at school and at work, with an active social life and no trouble finding girlfriends.

Keeping them? Well, that's another story, because all of the girls end up breaking up with him because they can tell he's not really into them. He's still hung up on his first love. Maybe because it was a true, deep love, but also because he just can't let go of the lingering regret of not saying anything to Yuu sooner. He can't accept that he'll never actually get to see him again, or give his answer to the confession.

But finally, one winter day, he does see Yuu passing by him in a crowd, and does what he wishes he'd done all those years before: he grabs onto Yuu's jacket and essentially doesn't let go until Yuu talks to him.

This ends up taking a while...because Yuu first pretends that he doesn't know Ryousuke, then tells Ryousuke to stop following him (Ryousuke is fully aware he's being creepy), then finally comes downstairs to speak to him several days later. Because Ryousuke learned from his youthful mistake and is going to speak his mind clearly and upfront instead of letting moments pass him by. He's too afraid of losing Yuu again.

The problem is, it's not just a simple story of youthful regret and ships passing in the night. Yuu had relocated to Tokyo because his mother had caught her boyfriend with Yuu - something that had been happening for years, a regular nightmare that Yuu had endured because the guy made his mother happy, and he didn't want to say something and be responsible for breaking their family apart. He'd already felt like his mother hated him because his father (whom he apparently looks just like) had left them right after his birth.

But after some time in Tokyo, Yuu's mother abandoned him anyway - having become an alcoholic who regretted having ever had a child. So he ended up "depending on the kindness of strangers" - using his body to find places to stay and older guys who would take care of him. He pretty much didn't think he was worth anything more than that.

Which all ties back to why he confessed to Ryousuke and then cut off contact with him: he never thought they would actually date or find happiness together. He didn't think he deserved that kind of life with Ryousuke. All he wanted was some pure, precious, unsullied memories of his first (only) love and a time in his life where he didn't have to think about things like his family life or basic survival. He absolutely never wanted Ryousuke to find out what his childhood was really like or what he was doing now.

But Ryousuke is kind and persistent and still more than a little bit in love with him, so they eventually end up spending time together and ... after some more pushing and convincing, Yuu lets himself be convinced that he might actually deserve some happiness.

Yuu's sugar daddy - whom he's living with when Ryousuke runs into him again - is an interesting but kind of odd character. I'm not sure I agree with the decision to make him a "good guy" who was just "helping Yuu." He's a married man with a child who's keeping a boyfriend on the side, and then blaming Yuu for the "physical parts" becoming a thing. If he'd just wanted to pay for Yuu's lodging and schooling out of pure generosity, he didn't have to sleep with him.

There's also a little sidenote that he was doing all this because Yuu looked exactly like a guy from his past, who presumably took his own life because of something he'd done. I wondered for a bit if this was what had actually happened to Yuu's disappearing father? But that'd be too coincidental and complicated.

He does end up telling Ryousuke about Yuu's past - something Yuu hadn't actually told him about, so the guy had also hired private investigators to look into his backstory - and possible places to find Yuu once he moved out of his sugar daddy home. The reunion is nice, and I like seeing Yuu putting down his walls and figuring out how to live like a "normal" person who can be happy with Ryousuke, get a regular job, and recover the type of life he should've had all along.

Being only one volume ruined this kind of story. Yuu had a lot of trauma and rushing into a relationship at the end was not the right answer. Love can make you a better person but ??? This story needed to be longer. But I did like the art and I liked the characters, even Yuu. His backstory was sad but he was still worthy of love.

I had a feeling this wouldn't be my cup of tea. We have some mutual pining, which I am only a fan of if it is done a certain way.

This story in general felt flat despite having some instense subjects being talked about

Pretty typical childhood first love story. Yuu confesses to Ryousuke in...middle school?...before disappearing. Yuu learns he moved to Tokyo so in the hopes of finding him, he goes to college there and spends 8 years hoping to find Yuu before they randomly cross paths. But Yuu has changed. He’s living with a middle aged married guy as his kept man so Ryousuke posts up outside their house everyday until Yuu agrees to talk to him. We aren’t reinventing the wheel here as far as BL stories go. Throw in the fact the Yuu has a tragic back story (and my least favorite kind at that) and that one of Ryousuke’s female friends confesses to him and you’ve got a tale that’s been told fairly often. What I liked about this one was that Yuu’s current partner, Honjou, aside from being a cheater with a wife and child, actually seems like a decent-ish person who cares about Yuu and wants him to be happy. Same goes for the female friend who wants Ryousuke to go for who will make him happy. Overall it’s a decent, if not fresh story, and I enjoyed reading it.

It’s a classic story. That one day, back in a perfect childhood, where the friend you’ve spent nearly every waking hour with pauses and manages to stutter out a love confession. It’s the sort of thing that students dream about and romance readers squee over. The problem is, for Ryousuke, it was also the day his best friend disappeared completely from his life. So what’s left to do but follow him in the hopes of one day returning that confession and grasping back at that oh so influencial first love.

Lethal Dose of Love is a bitter-sweet love story that digs into the heart of what it means to be in love and allow ourselves to be loved by others around us. And while I initially picked this up expecting it to be another black cat and golden retriever romance oneshot, I was pleasantly surprised at where the story went and how it handled the growth of a paused relationship....

For this book || TW: SA of a child, violence against a son from a mother

If you want a quick, middle of the road one shot BL, lethal dose of love is your way to go. This volume was short, sweet, and to the point; a childhood best friend duo will split and have miscommunication to rebuild what they lost. What the book has for cute romantic moments between the two MCs, it takes away from with the quickness of the plot. I was able to finish it in about 30-45 minutes and still was left wanting more. Yosumi has a beautiful art style with the ability to tell a good story (at least the makings are there), but because of their debut manga being a one shot, the characters are not as fleshed out as I would want them to be. I hope to see more of Yosumi’s work in the future with more novels in succession so we can watch them allow their character growth to breathe.

TLDR; good quick read but definitely wouldn’t reach for it after the first read.

I would’ve rated this book higher if not for the sexual abuse in Yuu’s past. I understand that it made him act the way that he did, but I typically tend to avoid manga (and stories in general) with that topic in them so a trigger warning would’ve been appreciated.
I really liked seeing how dedicated Ryousuke was to Yuu and how towards the end of this one-shot, that Ryousuke was very attentive in terms of making sure that Yuu was comfortable with everything that he was doing.
Something that I was pleasantly surprised with was when Ryousuke managed to meet Yuu’s older “friend” and their conversation. Despite the specifics of that situation that the older male was in, I’m glad that he wasn’t a more aggressive or abrasive character especially considering how exactly he was involved with Yuu.

This is 100% my favorite book now. It is the most real and emotional book that I have and have read. It’s so beautiful. The artwork is beautiful. The story is beautiful. The characters are beautiful and emotional and raw, and I love the backstory and how it tells when they were in school and present day and it shows all yuu reasons and then when Ryo find out what his reasons are he doesn’t pity him and yuu understands that it’s not pity like everybody else but that is a genuine care and even though there are some sexual scenes, this book is mostly about the relationship that they have and what builds between them so yes, a five out of five or 10 hour or 10 or whatever rating skill that you have it gets the highest mark

Trigger warnings: child abuse, non-consent, self harm, suicide...

Man this one was a little hard to read, it hits you crazy hard in the feels! This is a BL story about love overcoming trauma. The romance is beautiful and the MC is practically heroic and super wonderful. He had to overcome so much resistance from his beloved because of the chains of trauma and so much suffering and self loathing.

Watching this pair overcome this sadness and pain together was so beautiful and heartwarming. For me it even felt cathartic to see such kindness and love expressed...

Definitely a hard read but we'll worth it.

This one’s tricky because the art and overall story were decent, but it falls apart once you start analyzing the relationships and healthiness of everything. Don’t know why these two love one another other than “they look pretty.” Also, no talk about therapy for tragic backstory and no follow up with side characters….

You know what…. Imma leave it at that cause I’m probably gonna talk myself into a lower rating and hatred for the story. It’s fine but I don’t recommend this book.

As always, the script got me into it, and I found a story that only got better with time. Yuu seems like a cliché at first, but then you spend more time with him, his past, and his baggage, until you find out what made him the way he is. I won't spoil anything, just say there's a great exploration of trauma and healing.
