YU MOVES ON IN THE GAUNTLET OF THE GREATEST POUND-FOR-POUND BOXERS!
In the final seconds of Yu’s bloody beatdown against Fabrizio Santorino, an unexpected figure steps into the ring to stop the fight―the legendary boxer J! Coach K seethes at the sight of his grand finale ruined, but J isn’t in his crosshairs just yet. His primary focus is Yu’s inevitable battle with Aaron Tide―K’s last pupil and possibly the greatest boxer of all time. Before the two can clash, though, Yu must trample many more fighters, including the cruiserweight world champion, Viktor Grigoryev, and his fiery mohawk!
A bit of a switch-up in pace… a lot of this volume focuses on Yu’s next opponent before Aaron Tide, Viktor Grigoryev. And while that’s nothing new - to focus on Yu’s opponents before and during the fight - this time it was just a bit too silly for my tastes. A lot of time is spent watching Viktor do goofy stuff, like punch all the different elements, and JH seems to be just making absurd jokes here rather than developing Viktor as a character. He even puts Viktor’s entire backstory into just one page, haha.
It’s not necessarily a bad switch-up, but it kinda felt like JH wanted Yu to face one more person before Aaron Tide, and was kinda bored of making tragic backstories that make the reader feel bad when they lose. So instead, he just parodied his own way of writing.
There is a couple more serious moments in here - particularly toward the start and the end - but most of it is JH writing stuff that’s a lot more lighthearted than usual. It’s still not bad imo, but definitely a bit weaker than the last few volumes, I think.
