One of Asheville's greatest threats is gone, but a new one rises from the convoy's ashes, so insidious and personal that it threatens the lives of every man, woman and child in book 6 of Eve of Extinction.
The 3-million-book bestselling author Mike Kraus, working with Stephanie Mylchreest, brings you a thriller that's sure to hit close to home and leave you wondering "what if" long after you finish reading.
As of 2021, an estimated 97% of the world's financial transactions are digital. What would happen if that digital money - those 1's and 0's - vanished overnight?
The world's major banks are in chaos as a disastrous software upgrade has wiped out their customer's records, resulting in the loss of dozens of trillions of dollars in the blink of an eye. Chaos quickly spreads as the general populace panics, resorting first to theft to obtain what they need to survive before turning to more violent measures.
Caught in downtown New York at the reading of the will for her late mother, Sarah - an ER nurse - finds herself stranded in a burning Manhattan with her daughter Mia hundreds of miles away in North Carolina.
Halfway across the globe, Mia's estranged father learns of the disaster while working as a wildlife photographer in the Amazon rain forest, and resolves to do whatever it takes to make it home.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, a group of Sarah's closest friends does their best to not only watch over Mia, but help guide the survivors of their community as they navigate the treacherous waters of their new reality, discovering along the way who their real friends - and enemies - truly are.

Having sold well over three million books, Mike Kraus & Muonic Press are the #1 producing and selling indie press publishing post-apocalyptic tales, for good reason. Since capturing audience’s attention with Final Dawn in 2012, Kraus has captivated and delighted his readers, both with his solo projects like Epoch's End, The End of All things, Surviving the Fall and No Sanctuary, and with his co-authored projects with authors like Justin Bell, Kate Pickford, Tara Ellis, Kenny Soward and others on titles such as Zero Hour, MELT, Flashpoint and Weathering the Storm.
Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).
Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.
Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.
This is another enjoyable episode in this apocalyptic series! A good continuation of the storyline; with more disappointment & action for the main characters. A fast paced & action packed book which keeps you hooked right until the very end!
This finishes what has generally been a decent series. However, there were issues throughout, mostly plot related that bothered me. 1. Asheville is not a small town as it is portrayed. I've been there. It would not have a sheriff as those are usually a county office. 2. The cause of the disaster is presented as all financial records being wiped out. Financial institutions are required to have hard backups of information and anyone in government with half-a-brain would have determined to set a date prior to the event and have the institutions revert to the backups of that time. We are never told who did this, why and how widespread it was. Such an action would have had an objective as a follow-up but this never materializes. 3. Why do we hear from no one in authority, ever? Communications should have been able to continue. Why would there be no national guard, army etc that would try to help? 4. Up until book 6, I felt like Nate was a distraction that could have been eliminated from the story. He did improve and get a nice redemption arc in #6. I was never sure what was going on with Lucas, but he also gets some redemption. 5. Tony and Jeremy were a big part of the first few books and mostly faded away. Jeremy does get some time in book 6 to show he was a rock star and I would want him on my post-disaster team for sure. 6. Elara was an interesting character and I kind of liked how her story unfolded, though I really can't see the quick forgiveness that she got. Maybe I would just be crabby in the apocalypse. These issues would have been a 3.5 for me in stars, but the writing is good and I did come to like most of the characters so bumped to a 4.
Point blank shots to the chest don’t fail to hit important structures, especially lungs. And if they did cause no significant injury why would they produce prolonged unconsciousness and later require a wheelchair? Main characters still make really stupid choices. Over and over. It’s hard to cheer for them. Daniel seemed like the smartest but then proves himself no brighter than the others. Calf wounds aren’t that disabling. Author doesn’t know the difference between cover and concealment, or between tactics and strategy. She still thinks bullets will deflect from anything made of metal. One character vows never to love again then almost immediately is vowing forever to love. It’s a relief the series is over. I wish I had those hours back.
Stephanie Mylchreest and Mike Kraus ramp up the tension exponentially in Defend, Book 6 of their exciting, post-Apocalyptic Eve Of Extinction series. With the Sheriff and Lucas dead, Elara the settlers' supposed new ally shockingly shows her true ambitions. Will all Sara and June's good work be undone under the new regime?
Great characters, an original storyline and lots of rapid-action scenes will keep you gripping the edge of your seat, while fuelling your imagination, ready to observe the next fight for survival.
This journey has been harrowing, treacherous and brimming with danger as our characters have been through so much but there is one final battle that must be won to determine Asheville’s and its residents survival. Gripping, captivating and highly addictive, we have followed these determined and hopeful characters as they have journeyed through despair, loss, heartbreak and so much more to make it to the final showdown. The authors do an incredible job of pulling everything together and giving us the answers we have been looking for and an ending worthy of this series.
Great story lines and strong characters Lots of actions and i am a softy when it comes to dogs in the story line. All books were well written and kept me reading way into the night when i should have been getting my beauty sleep For lovers of end of days books , i highry recommend these booksz,. Congratulations to the authors. Well donee. NOW ON TO MY NEXT BIG READ.
The residents of Asheville had barely survived the attack by the convoy and had suffered significant losses. While they are still coping, Elara and her military group seize control under the guise of providing security. Things go from bad to worse until there is a final showdown to determine the fate of Ashville.
My only problem with this series has been portraying Asheville as if it was a small town, when in reality- it is a large city, with 2 interstates connecting it, a university, & suburbs meeting the city borders surrounding it. The characters & story were highly entertaining, as it has both action & romance.
I enjoyed the fact that there wasn't continuous fighting and war and I also enjoyed joyed the animals and the fact that they were helping the strays and rounding them up to take care of
Five books make for a long story. Rich in personalities and complexity in each person. We never know when we may need to step forward and be someone we never thought existed. Bravo!
Good solid advice about people drawing together during time of crisis. Sharing and helping each other. What one didn’t know someone else did going back to early survival days in America. Once again rebuilding and sharing a new beginning.
