Hello and welcome to my GoodReads page. Thank you for visiting!
I wrote romantic fiction before turning to crime in my forties. My debut novel was a World Book Night pick and my books are published in ten languages.
I live in the countryside and love strong coffee and pretending to be in charge of my children. ‘Murder on the Dancefloor'’, the second in my Bad Girls Detective Agency crime series, will be published by Boldwood Books in March 2024.

*** Three stars to the first book by Katie Marsh that I read: perhaps the plot is not very original, some aspects of the plot are understood from the beginning and you feel that the whole novel is a bit of a long introduction to the subsequent books in the series, but it is a good read, enjoyable and the characters are not bad: the three protagonists are different from each other, in many ways, in character, in background and also in future expectations, but together they work, they form a nice trio.
Really enjoyed! Think it’s a first in a series but they balanced between the main plot and the side plots very well! The description was very authentic and kept me on my toes!
¿Me pregunto si habrá novela número 2? :-D
i didn’t love it but i didn’t hate it. the beginning was a bit meh (checking how long it was and how close i was to finishing the chapter kinda vibe) and then it got really interesting in the middle but the ending was so severely meh and made me cringe (the agency name 💀💀) that it really ruined it can’t lie

This was just not for me! Characters were really annoying and it felt like a chore to finish - I also physically rolled my eyes too many times at some dialogue/plot!
I’m off to a tough start to the year lol sorry to anyone reading these maybe this will work for you
A lovely lemonade read, one to freshen up the soul a bit. Just a bit of light, easy to get through cozy murder mystery, where everyone gets cast in the role of murderer for a second. I can’t rate higher than this, though. Although I’m not bothered by cliches, and I do think this is worth a read as a palette cleanser, I didn’t feel like it was life changing or it was one of my top entertainment reads either, and I’m afraid it did not leave a lasting impression. The characters are pretty cookie cutter with one defining streak: the shy one, the mother bear, the justice warrior, the con man, scary maffia boss, the rich and immoral, just to name a few.
Note: I listened to the audiobook for this, and I particularly did not enjoy the different voices for different women, it felt too comical.
Although already fairly established in the world of romantic fiction, "How Not to Murder Your Ex" marks the first entry of Katie Marsh into the cosy crime fiction market. The cosy crime arena is one which is quite heavily populated and there are any number of other authors to compete with, some of which are firmly established names already.
This is an engaging read and the author's apparent ease in creating a flowing style shows that she is an experienced wordsmith. There is also ample evidence stylistically of her background writing romantic fiction. In a number of ways this influence actually aids and enhances the effects of the gentle humour that runs throughout the novel. The main protagonists are all female and "of a certain age". Clio, Jeanie and Amber are long-standing friends and it is at a regular gathering of the three to mark Clio's 45th birthday that the suspicious death of Clio's former husband, Gary, is discovered. The question is, who killed him? Could it even have been Clio herself whilst still in a drunken stupor?
The narrative is pleasingly well-paced and is provided from the perspectives of the three friends and also that of Gary in the hours leading up to his fatal demise. As is the fashion at present, there is also the inclusion of chapters using other media, such as an online news blog and text messaging. Although this book could be read by anybody, I suspect it will generally find more widespread approval from a female audience.
I enjoyed reading "How Not to Murder Your Ex", but I don't think it quite does enough to elevate from being described as "Good" rather than "Very good". As I said earlier, the cosy crime marketplace is a heavily populated one and I don't think this is unique enough to stand out from the crowd. It is competently executed, but without ever seeming particularly original. I sense that this book is being positioned to be the first in a series featuring the triumvirate of ladies from this story, but much as I enjoyed it, I am not sure those characters gripped me enough to make me definitely want to come back for more ... it may well depend on how crowded my reading list is at the time.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this murder mystery! It was such an entertaining book and I loved the dual timelines from different POV’s. Especially from the POV of the victim. I think there will be other books in the series and I can’t wait to read them!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Lighthearted and funny but defo wouldn't call it a page turner, and the twist was predictable :( but it did well as a light hearted murder mystery with 'thursday murder club vibes' although i didn't love that book either so makes sense lol x
Maybe Amber’s lethal margaritas had tipped her over the edge– cocktails mixed by someone doing the Macarena were always going to be a risk.
Clio had thought that slipping a disc while doing up her bra would go down in history as her worst birthday ever, but it appeared that life always had new treats in store.
Clio could always say anything. She specialised in speaking her truth, no matter how unwilling the world was to hear it.
It must be nice, having an inheritance. All Gary’s dad had left him were freckles and an allergy to freshly cut grass.
She was so full of aggression she had practically grown spikes.
How had Amber managed to work with him for so long? He was the kind of person who enjoyed reading instruction manuals. Out loud.
Clio wondered how science had come far enough to be able to get Richard Branson into space and yet still hadn’t solved the problem of nasal hair.
My Review:
I adored this wittily penned and vastly enjoyable read and was thrilled to realize it is the start of a new series. The writing was giggle-snort and smirk-worthy from start to finish with cunning insights and wry humor lacing it all together.
Katie Marsh is a sly storyteller who has weaved an entertaining and immersive tale with delightfully humorous observations and keenly penned descriptions that drew sharp visuals to my mind’s eye. I was thoroughly engaged, pleasantly entertained, deeply invested, and highly amused and resented any interruptions to my perusal.
The main characters were deeply flawed yet authentic and admirable as they were living their lives and still deeply bonded from childhood while now in middle age, despite their divergent paths and odd personal quirks. I can’t wait to dive into the next installment.
Definitely more on the slower paced cozy side, but so fun and enjoyable. Loved the inclusion of every characters POV and the plot twist was really well done! Definitely a good cozy mystery with some good humour to binge read. Had fun with this! The writing style was also really good.
Do you ever feel the need to read a book where the ending will simultaneously surprise you and yet be exactly what you want? Let me introduce you to How Not To Murder Your Ex, a magnetic and menopausal murder mystery that manages to both defy and embrace middle aged women clichés.
This whodunnit could be described as cosy and chaotic; humorous and heartfelt. The small seaside town and the caravan site as a crime scene certainly has a cosy feel to it, whilst the characters themselves are more than up for getting into trouble (or getting out of it). The humour has a touch of mania to it which adds to the desperation of the situation Clio has found herself in: being the prime suspect in her ex-husbands murder. And the heartfelt bonds between the three female friends, Clio, Amber and Jeanie—who are also gifted their own POVs—provide sustenance for any reader in this fast paced and fun read.
I really enjoyed this. I read it in a matter of hours and whilst I did guess who the killer was—despite the multiple red herrings—I genuinely loved the ending. This book is full of emotion, grudges, friendship, and hangovers, and proved an excellent way to pass the time.
Danica 🩷😊
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
The characters were really well established in the first few chapters; I immediately knew what kind of people they were and how well they interacted with each other. Each chapter switched to a different perspective - it was very well done as it showed off the character’s personalities and what they thought of each other.
Between the perspective switches and the time jump to before the murder and the aftermath, it made for a scintillating read! I was completely absorbed in each character’s story and my suspicion was peaked with each one. I loved that we got to read the victim’s thoughts, rather than the story following a typical chronological order.
The occasional addition of texts and social media posts were clever as they really added to the small-town murder feel - I could easily imagine the citizens being simultaneously outraged at the crime while also being somewhat pleased that their little town had finally gained some notoriety.
The twist & reveal of the murderer was pretty good, and this was a fun read overall; my favourite parts were definitely the investigation carried out by Clio’s two best friends!
Imagine waking up still drunk from the night before with a hangover looming to find your philandering ex in your doorstep with his head caved in?!
Thank goodness Clio has her two besties standing beside her in this complicated pickle she’s found herself. The trio all know Clio wouldn’t have killed her ex but it’s the police they have to prove it to; apparently gut instinct isn’t enough evidence!
Clio, Amber and Jeanie are great as a team. Each has their strengths and baggage to bring to the table. I was really intrigued to know what Amber had done to be kicked off the force! Jeanie I sympathised with trying to look after her twins with limited sleep. But these women really work and I really enjoyed getting to know them and trying to solve the murder as I went along.
How To Not Murder Your Ex is a fun murder mystery with a brilliant trio at the helm. It’s a great start to a series and I’ve already preordered the second which is out in March.
