For 15 months after he was released from prison, Michael Alig, also known as the Party Monster, lived with David Maurici. Sour Candy & Chaos chronicles the crazy situations that swirled around Michael Alig during his post-prison return to New York City.
Whew child! I am usually able to get through a book this length in one day, but this one took a minute! Why? It wasn’t bad writing. Not at all. It was the sheer exhaustion of vicariously surviving Hurricane Michael!
David’s book reads more like having a kiki with a friend or reading someone’s diary. It’s told more in anecdotal form that highlights the ups and down of living with Michael Alig, a larger than life persona, stuck in time. Michael’s immaturity and histrionics that would have been cutting edge in the 80’s and 90’s was grating. Also, I felt bad for Michael too because he was a legend in his own mind. He was drug popping Peter Pan, and that’s not a good look in your 50’s.
One thing that screamed through was that Michael was his own worst enemy. He just so happened to be at the right place at the right time to make a success of himself. But the outcome would have been the same. Drugs weren’t the problem. MICHAEL was the problem. I get why Michael was so loved and so hated in the end. This was one hell of a cautionary tale of what happens when you don’t let go- be it you past, friendships, jobs, personas… just let it go. Base life on what’s real, not what you wish it was or who you used to be.
