Four stars

An intense prologue set a millennium in the past sets the stage for Casey Morales’s epic adventure set in an imaginary world. The four Archer novels are focused on the lives of orphaned brothers—Keelan Rea and his little brother Declan.

But that brief description hardly describes it. Declan is in fact the cover figure for the four Archer books—a young Forest Ranger in Melucia with untamed blond hair. It is his destiny that changes the course of history for his country and its neighbor, the Kingdom of Spires. But his big (age-wise and size-wise) brother Keelan, who is a celebrated lieutenant in the national constabulary (i.e. a detective, aided by his magical gift of truth-seeing), is of almost equal importance.

And that’s just the tip of the cast-of-characters iceberg. In “An Archer’s Awakening” we learn that Keelan and Declan were raised by the mages in Saltstone, capital of the Melucian Empire (a commercial empire with no monarch but a highly developed merchant class). In particular, Atikus Dan is a 1000-year-old mage who they see as their father. He is important. Then there’s Ayden Byrne, red-headed son of a merchant nobleman, who joins Declan’s class in the Rangers’ academy. Theirs is a classic hate-at-first sight romance that will thread its way throughout the four volumes of the series.

As for the Kingdom (as it is called), the crucial figures are Crown Princess Jessia Vester, a headstrong teenager and heir apparent. Her father Alfred and mother Isabel struggle with their daughter, who has the odd belief that she should, as heir, have some control over her life choices. Then there’s Danai Thorn, a sort of grand vizier (not that they use that term here), who is at least as old as Atikus Dani. He is pulling 1000-year-old strings unbeknownst to anyone in the royal family. This book is where we get to know more about the main characters and get a sense (aided by very useful maps) of the story’s setting.

You see, the Kingdom of Spires and Melucia have been peaceful trading partners for 1000 years. That is about to change as book 2, “An Archer’s Destiny” kicks off. Storm clouds are gathering on the horizon as Thorn’s long con—using Queen Isabel as his unwitting accomplice—begins to unfold. At the same moment, Declan Rea, who is beginning his pas-de-deux with Ayden Byrne, discovers something about himself that turns his world upside down. Declan has always been conscious that, in this nation of magical people, he is one of the minority who have been given no gift (i.e. no magic). He takes comfort that the aristocratic Ayden is, like him, ungifted.

By book 3, “An Archer’s Reckoning,” things get really ugly. Declan takes his place at the center of the narrative, but so does Queen Isabel, still unaware that she is being used as a pawn in a violent and deadly game. I note here that all of this sort of fiction derives, ultimately, from “The Lord of the Rings,” and by extrapolation from “Star Wars.” This is “The Empire Strikes Back,” if you will. This is the dark before the dawn. Princess Jessia ends up in the protection of Keelan Rea and Atikus Dani, the mage who raised him. I found this book distressing to read, and it left me almost desperate for something positive. Of course, that pretty much guaranteed that I’d start reading book 4 immediately.

In book 4, “An Archer’s Redemption,” as the title suggests, the tide begins to turn. There is more violence, and some shocking surprises, but the power of the good magic, with Declan at the center of things, begins to offer us some hopeful light.

Casey Morales is no J.R.R. Tolkien; but he is nonetheless a strong, compelling writer, who knows how to stir action into a heart-stopping wave. He does not have the kind of beautiful language that would have pushed the book to five stars, and he also resorts to the genre’s requirement for on-page sex, which I found to be a distraction rather than a bonus. I am rooting for Ayden and Declan, truly; but I would have been happy to let their physical relationship blossom in my imagination.

All in all, a powerful, emotional, and worthwhile series. There are two other prequel type volumes, but these four are the essential pieces in visiting this fantasy world. I read them all at once. It was a good choice.

An Archer’s Reckoning-. Casey Morales. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I’m always amazed at the plotting, writing, world creation and storytelling skills , plus character development that author Casey Morales always produces no matter the genre. I can’t think of another author who has such diverse books out there for their readers.

This Crown and Quills series featuring Declan and Ayden has just highlighted all those skills in one place.

I’ve read all three and all of them have been unputdownable. In Book 1, Declan has cast Ayden as an enemy because he is the son of a Lord with all the benefits that bestows, Declan’s is jealous because he had a much harder life growing up and he had no GIFTS, and this was an important attribute in their world.

Declan in Book 2, has changed his opinion of Ayden and I loved how these two came to terms with their feelings for each other. Especially Declan, it definitely was an awakening. Then When Declan’s is sent on an important secret mission they were separated, but it was a super important time in Declan’s life and development. It was beyond his dreams but it filled him with fear and trepidation of the war that is developing in Melucia, his homeland and he wonders if Ayden is safe and alive.

Now here in Book 3, Declan returns and the traitorous ex Queen has been taken over by the evil spirit Irina who proceeds to destroy the whole Kingdom and Melucia. With the help of all the Mages and their powers, Declan is front and foremost in the battle. The descriptions of those scenes were mind boggling with the use of magic, bow and arrow and cannon. Great imagination from author, such intensity of battlefield that I felt myself there as an onlooker, and I’m squeamish.

Irina, has not been working her evil alone, Danai, her long time advisor has helped through the century since Irina was last alive. Now, he has found something on the battlefield that has ignited his own greed for power.

The author has provided a Bibliography of all the major participants and their roles in Crowns and Quills and quite a few of them get to give their POV at relevant points in the Series.

With Declan and Ayden reunited in the aftermath of battle still with his adoptive father Aticus to watch out for them, I’m so looking forward to the next book which maybe wrap up the. Down and Quills series.

I will miss the world of Declan and Ayden that Casey Morales has created here, I only recently ventured into Fantasy genre but I’ve liked it a lot. The Artwork on the covers is absolutely gorgeous.

Highly recommend this whole series for fans of Fantasy and even to those who, like me just discovered it, jump right in and enjoy.

Another mediocre adventure with very little actual action, a lot of meandering, pointless conversations between weak characters and unresolved plot lines. For a book set up to be the war, it was barely that. It was a lot of rumours, minor devastating but distant skirmishes that the MCs only hear about second hand, then a few chapters of very intense battle description, a clearly insane queen and the mostly successful(?) evacuation of a whole city of people, magic defence eventually failing, then the phoenix (who was the talking owl the whole time, what a surprise) takes over and sacrifices itself for the good of all. Then the MCs who missed that action return, everyone is sad, then there are a couple of time skips to show recovery and then an epilogue leading to yet another book. This time I have no desire to read about the rise, and probably fall, of another subpar villain, or anymore about Jess, who is currently a MIA queen, out of sight, out of mind (good riddance).

The characters had no development. There were way too many perspectives in this book, and none of the characters had anything special happening. Declan spent the last book training the whole time, he then spends most of this book using one form of magic to create shields and nothing else, while all the other mages do nothing(?) and the Phoenix has to step in. He continues to find himself funny, be generally unserious and definitely an alcoholic... Keelan did not change at all, though I am glad that the weird relationship he was building with Jess didn't go anywhere, both because she is an awful character and he is quite a bit older than her... Jess remains a spoilt, arrogant and selfish brat. The loss of her family was awful, but she needs to grow up especially since she is meant to be queen now, the very responsibility she spent the first two books trying to flee. The portrayal of Isabel/Irina was so unrealistic, so quick to snap, so violent and angry, with no cunning or consistency in how she treat people.

With very little plot and poor characters, I can't struggle through another book hoping the gaping holes will be fixed...

This new volume of Of Crowns and Quills is intense, a kind of calm before the storm throughout the book until the elements unleash themselves.
We feel the latent pressure, the impression that at each step, at each intersection, the heroes will suddenly face their next challenge.

Each of the heroes continues their own path, their own adventure throughout the book, we follow them one after the other, each with their companions. They will lose friends, loved ones and comrades in arms along the way and finally find each other again.
And when everything explodes, it's the apocalypse... Deaths, tears, broken hearts...
We love passionately with Declan and Ayden.
We cry and suffer with Declan.
We are tormented with Ayden in the face of dizzying revelations.
We are devastated with Keelan in the face of his own actions and his own feelings.

Casey Morales offers us once again an exciting book, in which we dive with the only fear is to have to turn the last page.
The story is not finished and continues in the next volume that I am already impatiently waiting for.

----

The Romance in a distant era continues!

Florida author Casey Morales continues to impress with his new series – ‘Of Crowns and Quills’ – entering a new territory for him, fantasy/fable/colorful mystery. To date Casey has excelled in his many MM books set in contemporary time as well as historical time, able to develop intoxicating romances that step beyond the norm into a higher level of relationship development. Now, in AN ARCHER’S RECKONING (Book 3 of this series) we again enter the Melucian Empire, and the realms of magic, warfare, family, mystery, and mystical creatures weave an irresistible tapestry.

The plot is complex, but adeptly delivered. Casey’ summary distills it well: ‘Declan returns from his quest bringing a reunion with Ayden that is both deeply moving and intensely passionate. Yet, their blossoming love is overshadowed by an encroaching darkness that threatens to consume everything. The Kingdom's forces mass at Melucia's border. Tension is palpable as scouts clash in the treacherous mountains. Enemy mages materialize just beyond city walls, their presence a foreboding sign of the turmoil to come. Irina has returned. More powerful than anyone alive, she is driven by an unquenchable thirst for vengeance. As her dark influence spreads, the world holds its breath, waiting for the inevitable clash that will determine its fate.’ The powerful epic journey continues to blossom, delivered with romance, tension, and wit – as Casey Morales winningly achieves in this excellent ongoing series. Highly recommended for all readers – with or without the steam of MM romance!

An Archer’s Reckoning is the third enthralling installment in the acclaimed Of Crowns & Quills series. This novel captures the essence of adventure and the trials faced by its unforgettable characters. If you are a fan of epic fantasy narratives with richly woven plots and compelling characters, you won’t want to miss this captivating read.

‘An Archer’s Reckoning’ takes readers on a journey beyond mere action sequences. It dives deep into the personal growth and evolution of our beloved heroes. From perilous battles full of tragedy to intimate moments of reflection, the character development in this book is profound and relatable. You will find yourself rooting for them as they confront their fears and uncertainties.

At its core, the novel explores themes such as loyalty, sacrifice, and the quest for redemption. Each turn of the page is filled with magic, romance, and drama. The interplay of friendship and rivalry adds depth, creating a vivid tapestry of relationships amidst intense circumstances. As the characters grapple with choices that could alter their fates, readers are reminded of the power of determination and courage.

Casey Morales is an excellent writer who can paint a detailed vision with his words that make you feel like you are living the adventure alongside his wonderful characters. A lot of unanswered questions from book two were resolved in this book, but it is still a continuing story and a journey you do not want to miss.

Perhaps take notes, writers. Errors can spoil stories.

Glaring errors at the start of the book were, once again, vexing. Then, the missteps continued throughout. Some corrected without explanation. Maybe the author remembered where he'd actually left things, after all.
However, a frustrating final battle & a number of mistakes & inconsistencies don't ruin the overarching narrative.
The tale still has heart. It still entertains. It's imaginative & mostly well executed. Personalities are developed & revealed at a good pace. The heat is there, if not, once again, awkwardly injected into the character's arcs.
I continue to enjoy this series & have no hesitation in starting the next book as soon as possible.
Perhaps the pace at which these stories have to be created to ensure a viable living for the author is the reason for continuity issues. He certainly has to be busy with his output. In various areas of interest, not just the one.
I write, every day, but don't publish. I've learnt to take notes & perhaps have been schooled to accuracy by reading so many of these production line books. So maybe I should just enjoy each authors work & leave the insistence on perfection to my own output. I am grateful for all their hard work & commend their prolific work ethic.

An Archer’s Reckoning is the third book in the Of Crowns & Quills series. We rejoin Declan as he’s returning from his quest and the shadow of darkness is encroaching on the kingdom. The battle is getting intense and Irina has returned. Out for vengeance, Irina spreads her influence and the investable clash is on the horizon. What will become of the world as they know it?

I’ve enjoyed this series from the start and now I’m fully invested to see how it all ends. I think this book was my favorite one yet and I enjoyed how things are starting to fall into places. I can’t wait to see how things are going to play out in the next book. The world building and journey this series takes you on is great and I find it easy to get lost in this world. The characters in this book are fun and easy to get to know and now that we are in the third book I find it easy to keep everyone straight. These series needs to be read in order, so if this book sounds interesting start from the beginning of the series. I think the books have gotten better are the series goes on! If you’re looking for a fantasy series full of quests and interceding characters with a MM romance woven in this series is a great choice! I can’t wait to see how this series ends and look forward to reading more.

I have always loved, since the first story published by Casey, all his books. All of them. But I have to confess that the more I get into this series, the more confused I feel.

Now, don't get me wrong. It's more of a "me problem" than anything else. The fresh and original style of the author is still intact. The attention to detail, the construction of this magical world, the characters. Everything makes for a complex, entertaining story, with a good dose of adventure and action.
But in my opinion, as a romance reader, said romance is something that's missing here. Yes, we have Ayden and Declan, but unfortunately, due to the events that occur in the series, they spend more time apart than developing their relationship, and although the bond that unites them is strong, it can't be appreciated, at least, as I would like.

And my other problem. And I emphasize, it's a me problem (again) and not with the story itself, is that there are too many POVs. I think that's where my confusion lies. And it's something that makes me go back constantly to check who's speaking.

Anyway, it's a series that I highly recommend. And I hope to reread it myself in the near future, and thus be able to appreciate it more. 4 stars for this third part of the series!

**Warning** Please read the first two books in the series before you start so that you can enjoy this one to the fullest.

This third book in an epic adventure of good vs. evil in a fantasy world brings chaos and challenge to all our main characters, but most importantly to Declan, who has gained magical powers beyond anything imaginable. He is the Heir to Magic. The war happens and is devastating and horrifying in the brutality unleashed by the evil spirit of Irina, who has also murdered her host's family in cold blood. Casey does a masterful job of creating this evil, as well as the tender love we see between parent and child and especially between Ayden and Declan, our lovers who have been separated for long periods of time. Their bond is magical. The end of this book leaves many questions unanswered, so we look forward to the fourth book in a few months. How will this relationship survive when the balance of power has changed so profoundly? What is Ayden's role in this new world that will emerge from the ashes?

An Epic Adventure Awaits . . .

This book is filled with an exciting tale of evil, darkness, and danger where even an emerging hero has to be careful of placing trust in the wrong person. Now Declan is at last returning from his dangerous quest and is eager reunite with Ayden. But even that joyous celebration is overshadowed with the threat of an evil, relentless darkness. And when the powerful Irina appears to enact her seething vengeance, can anyone be certain that this time they will overcome evil and survive to escape that darkness? Can even love remain?

There are many characters the reader will meet, but don’t feel overwhelmed as the storyline moves briskly along and the dialog is effective to put you right in the middle of the action. You will find yourself caring about many of those characters and it makes the world-building feel more real and urgent. And pitted against the fearful aspects of the war’s destruction, we have two people trying to build their relationship and hold their love together. Where is all of this heading? Where will the next part of the story lead us? Are you ready to move forward to find out?

An Archer’s Reckoning is a fantastic continuation of the Of Crowns & Quills series. Casey does an excellent job of combining exciting action with deep emotional moments and once again demonstrates a masterful hand at balancing deep character development with the pulse-pounding tension of a world on the brink of war.
The reunion between Declan and Ayden is beautiful and heartwarming, filled with love and passion and their bond grows stronger, even as danger closes in around them. But their love story is not the only focus.
The return of a powerful and vengeful villain, raises the stakes and keeps you on edge throughout the book. But what really makes the action stand out is how much you care about the characters. Every fight, every challenge, feels personal because you’re so connected to their journey.
In summary, An Archer’s Reckoning is filled with heart, adventure, and emotion. It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys fantasy with a strong love story at its core. As always, Morales leaves you eagerly waiting for the next chapter in this epic tale.

An Archer's Reckoning by Casey Morales, the fourth book in the Of Crowns & Quills series, offers an intense mix of romance, war, and dark magic. The reunion between Declan and Ayden brings both heartwarming moments and steamy m/m romance. Their relationship, full of passion and emotional depth, is a standout amidst the looming chaos.

The plot thickens as war threatens the Kingdom, with enemy mages, rising tensions, and the dark, powerful Irina returning to seek vengeance. The stakes are high, and the fast-paced action, along with the growing cast of characters, makes this a gripping continuation of the series.

This book is perfect for fans of epic fantasy who enjoy a richly layered world, complex characters, and a strong romance at the heart of the story. However, it's not a standalone, so diving into the earlier books first is essential. Sensitive readers should be prepared for intense war scenes, but the compelling love story and the unique magic system make this a must-read for fantasy lovers.

You’d think the author has given Declan enough of a growth prior to this book, and now it’d be easy peat but no. I am glad I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily, because these books are amazing. I got the hang of the continuous changing POV, and appreciated how the story flowed through all of them, advancing from all fronts so to speak. Yes, ma main focus is Declan because I felt a kinship to him that made me pay closer attention to him than anyone else. And regardless of Jess’ trials, reasons, and character growth, she’s a spoiled brat. I’m happy things are looking up in some aspects, and I can’t wait to read the last book! But I confess, I’ll miss some of the characters. One of the things I’ve appreciated the most is the variety of personalities of the characters. Some I love, some I like, some I wish I could ignore, and I think this is why this series is so good. The characters are fleshed out, unique and with individual traits that you’d find in real life, making the story much more enjoyable.

An Archer's Reckoning, book 3 of this masterpiece is like riding a roller coaster. there are moments in Declan's and Aydan's journey, Atikus, Keelan, and so on that, as a reader, you are experiencing the thrill of a decent with excitement of a new discovery, a hard climb where danger is coming, a plateau either of hope where Declan discovers new abilities or despair where Irina deception and hate knows no limit, then a quick drop and your heart is in your mouth.

Casey is a master storyteller. How in f**** nane can he come up with such a storyline I do not know, what skill, I suppose he is akin to Declan with a pen or typewriter.

I look forward to the next instalment, though Casey, give my heart a bit of a rest, or maybe not. one thing I have learnt from these books is that you can never be assire about the key characters you have fallen in love with will be safe....

did I say I don't like rollercoasters. until now.

Book 3 of this exciting series. I expected that I would not like this book. I expected it to be even better than the previous books. Yes, I really hoped and expected that. And this book is fantastic, beautifully written. The world in which this takes place is beautifully described and very believable. The journey continues. War, loss of friends and loved ones. Ayden and Declan, also learn more about themselves. And Keelan, my heart breaks for this man. Keelan and Declan grow closer. We also learn more about Orla and Jess. Jess has been rescued, but her kingdom is about to start a war. And then there is Irina, full of hatred and revenge. And the world is on fire. This story breaks you, makes you cry and makes you angry. And then fill you with hope again. I love Casey Morales, the way this writer knows how to hold you in a story and keeps the tension increasing. These books are real gems and fortunately the story is far from over.

Wow wow wow! This book had me breathless. In this book, Ayden and Declan are reunited as war is building between Melucia and the Kingdom. Declan is still learning about his new found skills, guided in part by his bond mate, a sarcastic owl. Meanwhile, Keelan and Atikus are charged with protecting the 16 year old, newly crowned queen, Jess. And her mother, who has murdered the king and the prince, is now inhabited by the spirit of Irina who is after revenge on those who wronged her. And nothing will stand in her way.

Casey Morales has created a world filled with magic and intrigue. The characters are believable. There is action that had me holding my breath. And there was steamy scenes. So much steam between Declan and Ayden.

The next book in this series begins with Declan's vision of foreboding and doom. He has to do everything in his power to prevent the disastrous deaths of friends and loved ones. Ayden, Orla , Keelan, Atikus and Queen Jess all aide in the fight against the now returned wicked mage Irina who is determined to conquer all the lands, to rule and destroy the world and wreak her vengeance with death to all. But does Declan, the Heir of Magic" have what it takes to stop her? You will hold your breath as you read of battles, treachery and so much loss. In this segue-way to the epic conclusion, all is darkest before the dawn but the nightmare is not resolved. I received a copy of this book through Booksprout and this is my voluntary opinion.

I actually enjoy longer stories which is good because Casey Morales has written a very, very good, but very long story. Don’t let this discourage you because even though I have a terrible memory I have been more than able to keep things straight with this series. This may not seem like much, but to me it’s a sign of good storytelling when the story starts small and builds as this series does rather than starting complicated and expecting readers to keep up. I have started too many series like that lately that seem to think that they need to start big in order to keep people’s attention and that a glossary at the end is enough to explain everything. I am hooked on this series and also plan to continue reading anything Morales writes.

Fantastic read! 4.25 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

An Archer’s Reckoning continues the Of Crowns & Quills series and Declan’s journey. Declan grows with his challenges, and so does his relationship with Ayden. Casey Morales does an excellent job balancing fast paced action, building relationships and creating romantic moments.

With Irinas return, anything can happen and a lot does in unexpected ways. Casey really created such a perfect, dynamic series with something for those who love magic, great world building, inspirational characters and unexpected relationships.

Love this sequel and highly recommend it.

If you really love an intricately and lovingly crafted world with magic and loads of politics intrigue this is a great option. It has the feeling to me of a great quest and that has been fun to uncover- I’ve enjoyed seeing the characters evolve as the series goes on. Personally, I am more interested in the characters and the romance between Aiden and Declan which has felt a bit of an afterthought. There are glimpses of chemistry and connection that keep me interested but I’m definitely hoping for an epic finale for these two. Fun world building, lots of interesting characters.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

So much happened in this book. So many characters to love and hate, with Declan and Ayden trying desperately to be together. I was so happy that Declan went on his "mission" in place of Atikus, but he hated that he had to leave Ayden... what an adventure! What an impact! Declan found himself and so much more. Imagine thinking your nothing only to find you are really special, from a Mute to the Son of Magic! The technique having each chapter from a POV from all the characters sure kept me on my feet, kept my interest pique. I was hoping there would be redemption for Irina, but that wasn't meant to be. Can't wait to read what's in store.

Declan returns back home and finds his new powers work better than he even knew. He found that the war has progressed much faster than thought.

Keelan is in enemy territory and doing his best to help the enemy Queen. But fate has other plans.

Ayden wants more than anything to stay by Declan's side but they know they have duties that will separate them for a while.

The war is coming fast. Can our characters make it through the battle? Can they escape the evil that has been released along with Irina? Please come read this story with excellent world building and amazing characters.

This refers to the audiobook version.
The story is really rocking along in book three with multiple perspectives in the narration, an unhinged (to say the least) Queen, Newly found magic for our younger brother hero, a child of magic to be his familiar, a new Queen (different one) on the run with our other brother hero, and lots more. It is a lot to try to keep together but Casey's easy dialogue and great characterisations help to focus the story towards the main event in this one, the battle for Saltstone. It is a lot. That said, I am completely invested and can't wait for book four to be released.
As always Carmen Rose and Kenn Peterson give a commanding performance to lead us through this complex tapestry of a story.

I think this book would be easier to read straight after the others, as there are a multitude of POVs of complex characters and detailed world building. It took me a while to figure out what was happening after reading a lot of other books in the meantime. Declan's present and future are particularly changed from the start of this series. Fortunately, the love between him and Ayden is stronger. I hope they can spend more time together in the next book. Órla was beautifully written. There are a number of plots still to be finished in the next part, but no unpleasant cliffhanger.

I'm not a huge fantasy girl right now. I like it here and there, but as a rule, it isn't what I pick anymore. I also get bored lately with reading book series with the same characters. However, Casey Morales is an instant read for me and this is one series that I just cannot put down. I'm literally obsessed. I mean, i need special edition with painted edges, obsessed. The World building is so creative. The relationships between all the characters are intriguing. And the writing is so beautiful.

This is the forth book in this series. Archer is a Ranger turned son of magic. He is set to try and save his home land from an evil Sorcerer reincarnated bent on destroying everyone and everything in her path for revenge. Casey has an amazing ability to tell an in-depth complex story. There are several stories within this book. I absolutely love this story, there is love,,suspense, magic, attempted murder, war, self discovery as well as love of family. You do not want to miss out on Archers story. Be sure to read the first two books. Five stars Casey! Can't wait for the next one.

After many months of intensive training Declan is back from his journey where he learns that he is a Mage & reunites briefly with Ayden. Keenan is on the run with the rescued Princess, that the kingdom believes he has kidnapped her. The Queen has "lost" herself & reincarnates Irina A revengeful witch, who causes a war between the Kingdom & the residents if Melucia.
