Imperial Secrets: Recipes Worth Dying For

Rate this book
A rare and ancient manuscript, saved from destruction and hidden since colonial times, is discovered in the basement of the British Library. A secret that links two great chefs, separated from each other by 250 years.

Wrenched from a nation at war, the manuscript’s original owner escapes death and takes flight by river to an old Siamese trading port, hundreds of miles away. In the company of an opium- and gin-crazed Dutch ship’s captain, he begins a sea voyage through vibrant coastal towns and violent storms, leading not to his freedom but to cruel betrayal by those in whom he has placed his trust.

When the manuscript’s new owner realises what she has discovered, she returns with it to modern-day Thailand, awakening long-dormant ancient spirits. But when the manuscript escapes Siam once more, a new trail of destruction is created in its wake.

A delicious book from start to finish!

This book was a real surprise journey with so many twists and turns that kept me gripped to the last page!! Those recipes sound incredible, and I am looking forward to trying to recreate some at our book club meet-up. I would highly recommend this as a read!

A brilliant debut novel, captivating from the first page to the last! It is very clear to the reader that a lot of research has gone into the writing of this book, the author’s passion for food, culture and history is apparent in every page! The description of the characters painted vivid pictures in my head, I became attached to the characters, especially Mohamad, and loved the way the book moves from ancient times to modern day so fluidly!

On a personal note, this novel was written by my lovely dad, I am so very proud of him! Dad, I can’t wait to see what you do next xx

This is not my usual kind of read, but contains all of the things I love in other genres. A murder mystery, food, time shift & incredibly descriptive writing.

Having never been to most of the places in this book, I felt like I was transported in time & could imagine the sounds and smells. As well as becoming quite attached to the characters as their separate (but connected!) stories played out.

A clever book that kept me hooked throughout, and a standout for a first novel.

Fantastic job PB, I hope you write many more!
