‘Midway’ is the first of a pair of books set in a somewhat dystopic future, where all live in a vast city. The elite live in the top Tier, others in Midway, and the poorest below. This is a world where most people possess technological augmentations, though a group of rebels, called Evos, are against this and wish for humans to return to what they were. In this world, a bounty hunter called B-19 gets mixed up in grand affairs when he takes down some sort of rogue that was protecting a girl without transplants – the Organic Girl of the title – who turns out to have special powers. But it turns out that absolutely everyone wants this girl – from a pseudo-religious cult that has formed a hive mind, to The Mob, to the elite living in the upper Tier. B-19 ends up at various times fighting all of them, and we are left at the end with him having to make a decision about whether to essentially join the rebels and save the girl or walk away.

The tone is a cross between Bladerunner, Robocop and the Matrix. It is certainly thrilling, and the action scenes – of which there are many – are generally very well done. It’s also clever, and there is decent characterisation of B-19, and in many places it is very sharply written. I really want to give this a 4, or even higher, and really, many readers will LOVE this. BUT… the editing is frankly atrocious. It’s amazing to see even an independently published book with this many errors: there are usually around a dozen on each page: missing words, apostrophe errors, typos, spelling mistakes. Please, Mr Thomas – briefly withdraw the book from sale and fix these! It would probably take me an intense two days to get this into shape and make it look professional, as most of the fixes are minor, so I doubt whether it would take you much longer, and I think your work really deserves this.

But to be clear: I will definitely be reading the follow up as soon as opportunity allows. I just need to get my breath back first!

Enjoyable for fans of cyberpunk

Midway: The Organic Girl: Part One plunges readers into a vivid and gritty urban dystopia, where society is dominated by bio-implants, pollution, and unyielding corruption. A.D.H. Thomas crafts an immersive futuristic world ruled by an elite Upper Tier and populated by rebels and bounty hunters navigating the labyrinth of Midway, a city that feels as alive as the characters themselves.

The protagonist, B-19, is a seasoned hunter drawn reluctantly into a dangerous conflict when he encounters the mysterious "Organic Girl"—a rare individual untouched by technology but hunted for her enigmatic powers. From the moment she enters the story, the stakes skyrocket, drawing B-19 into a violent clash with everyone from criminal syndicates to the ruling elite.

Thomas excels at fast-paced action and sharp, atmospheric descriptions. The book’s tone masterfully blends cyberpunk influences from Blade Runner, Robocop, and The Matrix, creating a story that is thrilling and cinematic. The characterization of B-19 as a morally ambiguous and conflicted protagonist is particularly strong, adding emotional depth to the relentless action.

However, the story leans heavily on familiar cyberpunk tropes, such as neon-drenched streets, high-tech gangs, and noir-inspired antiheroes. While enjoyable, it often feels like a homage rather than a fresh contribution to the genre. Nevertheless, it’s an exhilarating ride through a dark and chaotic future that leaves you eager for the next installment.

A Cyberpunk Chaos!

B-19 is a hardened bounty hunter navigating the gritty, tech-saturated underbelly of Midway, a mega-city dripping with corruption and high-tech desperation.

A pulse-pounding descent into a world where humanity is constantly upgraded, traded, and potentially disposable.

With a protagonist scarred both physically and mentally, "Midway" delivers a raw, unfiltered look into a future where personal identity is as malleable as the bio-tech implants flooding the market.

The narrative cuts like a laser through conventional storytelling, blending the noir-esque sensibilities of Jack Reacher with the dystopian landscape of Blade Runner.

B-19's internal struggles - wrestling with past trauma, resisting full technological conversion, and maintaining a razor-thin moral code - create a protagonist so complex he'll haunt you long after you've turned the last page.

This book isn't just science fiction - it's an examination of what remains human when technology threatens to consume everything.

Great book

If I had the time I would not have put this book down until I'd finished.
The opening chapter is one of the best opening chapters I've read all year, and I've read an awful lot!
B-19, wasn't sure at first how I felt about that for the name of the protagonist but it grew on me.
B-19 is an enhanced bounty hunter, given jobs by the police. When he answers a call to a dockside warehouse he has no idea that his life is about to be whipped out from under his feet. Fantastic world building, brief descriptions artfully told to make everything vivid.
The whole book is very cinematic and I can see it easily on a TV series or movie.
The scene where B and a young girl jump through a window hundreds of floors up was brilliantly described, pure popcorn shovelling material!
I normally moan like mad at cliffhanger endings but as book 2 is out I won't moan.. I'll just go grab the next book.
Fast-paced futuristic adventure, highly recommended.

A good story with a decent premise

A future where classes are literally separated by elevation. The rich, the elite, live in the uppermost breathable atmosphere, while the poorest are on or close to the polluted ground. Medway, is the level between where average folks live and work. While it wasn’t clear for a while just how this leveling worked, mention way into the book of the city floating cleared some of it up.

The main character, called B-19 or just B, isn’t fully fleshed out in part one. There is some backstory about his role in the military and fighting a war, and his dead sister. A little more detail on him and something more developed between him and the little girl would have added to the story and character arc. I assume more will develop in part 2.

I love reading and supporting indie authors, and Thomas tells a decent story here. Some editing and proofreading would really have improved the read and my rating.

Dark science fiction meets intense action

I recently completed an enthralling book set in the dystopian mega-city of Midway, where dark science fiction meets intense action. The protagonist, a bounty hunter with a mysterious past, navigates a city rife with crime and corruption. This novel masterfully combines the atmospheric tension of Blade Runner with the gripping action of Jack Reacher, presenting a cinematic narrative that’s both dark and engaging. The book stands out with its vivid descriptions and robust character development, ensuring a fast-paced, immersive reading experience. It's a perfect pick for fans of futuristic thrillers, delivering suspense, advanced technology, and non-stop action.

One thing kept running through my mind as I read 'Midway – The Organic Girl: Part 1', and that was Bladerunner. It's not so much the story itself, but as I imagined Midway in my mind's eye, I kept coming back to the look of Ridley Scott's classic movie.

A. D. Thomas' narrative style is just right. On the one hand, they keep the excitement coming. On the other, they reveal the bigger picture in little morsels, one at a time. Combined, this makes for a story that's at once original and familiar. In short, it's a book you just can't put down (cliché though that may be).

The text is definitely in need of some careful copy editing, but I wouldn't change one bit of the story. In fact, I can wait to see what happens to B-19 and Neesa in part two!

Amazing Sci fi read

For those who like futuristic dark science fiction, this story is a thrilling and intense addition to their collection. The author has integrated the futuristic technological aspects very well in this story which keeps the readers engaged. The romance added to the story makes the readers self relate and make them live in their imaginations of a future thrilling world. The story is full of intense action scenes and the strong character of the story makes the readers self discover and transform themselves. Would want to read the next sequel of the story.

Pretty cool dystopia setting that is gritty. More of a cyberpunk story than traditional sci-fi but all the same and liked it. Definitely a good beginning for book one.
