Sky Wolf: A Fairy Tale

Rate this book
The valiant King of Iceleea searches for a wife to be his queen when he strikes a bargain—or a curse?—with the feared ruler of the dead, Hekate, Queen of Witches. The witch renders him a mysterious woman with unbeheld powers and a magickal white wolf in this wicked little tale of sorcery, magick, and myth.

In a land far, far away, where sorcery has its own kingdom, the brave King of Iceleea laments finding a queen for his kingdom. One night, wind stirring the dark woods, he stumbles upon the Queen of Witches of the Underworld, Hekate, bangled in snake rings and known to make rivers scream in her presence.

The witch tempts him with a trade—a promise to issue forth a maiden of imperial qualities. When the beauty arrives riding a strange white wolf out of the deep forest, the king must keep the terms of his bargain to accept her buried past.

What mysteries lie within this woman with no name who carries the scent of lusty oak leaves in her hair and a sinister scar on her back? As Hekate’s shadow rides the king’s mare, the king must discover his own wisdom and choose between his duplicitous queen or risk Hekate’s demands to discover the true identity of his queen.

Witchcraft and wolves, romance and desire, chance or choice, and a magickal yew tree rule in this fairy tale of old in a land of mystery and lore. Come into the heart of Sky Wolf.

The first and last thing you need to know about reading Paula Cappa — be it a novel, novella, novelette, or short story — is that whatever she writes should immediately go to the top of your TBR (To Be Read) pile. By all means, finish whatever you might be reading but make her work next. There are few authors that can enthrall, enchant, and captivate readers as she does.

Fairy tales are often read to children but are really meant for adults. "Sky Wolf" is no exception. The King desires a 'suitable' companion to alleviate the loneliness and provide him with heirs. He dreams of princes and princesses to perpetuate his line. He has searched far and wide for his life's companion to no avail. The melancholy king sets out once again stopping at a crossroads to rest. He cries out “Is there no woman of pedigree for a good king? For I am an honest and reliable ruler, loyal to my people and their needs. Where is my queen? Where shall I find her?” With a minimum of words, we are told that this king sees himself as worthy of a 'woman of pedigree…' There is nothing to suggest he is not a good king, but he does see himself as powerful and worthy and male. An equally powerful and worthy woman steps out of the trees. He perceives her to be the Queen of Witches. The mighty Hekate stands before him. He has heard the rumors and doesn't trust her.

As is the wont of gods and goddesses of old, Hekate offers to fulfill his heart's desire as long as he swears to certain conditions. A bargain is struck, and, as they say, all is well with the world. Of course, in time the king will challenge the conditions only to have the might of womankind prevail.

A child reading this will see wishes fulfilled, a great love story, and happily ever after. Adults will see the ever-present conflict between the sexes. They will understand this is a morality tale applicable to any time, including the twenty-first century.

Allow yourself to be carried away by a fairy tale where a king and his queen hold sway, Savor each and every word. Ponder the light and the dark to find the gray dawn and purple twilight as you spend time in Iceleea at the crossroads of reality and fantasy.

Charming and magical story

A delightful fairy tale with all the traditional elements plus a modern sensibility. There is a wise and lonely King, a beautiful and mysterious Queen, a unique and devoted familiar, a powerful and benign witch, and a surprise and happy ending. What more could you want?

A love story told with the usual Cappa-esque flair for mystery, horror, and high-fantasy. I enjoyed how the writer pulls in Olde English words to enhance the story.. Highly recommend.
