If there was ever to be a category in the Guinness Book of World Records for, Person Fired from the Highest Number of Jobs, then standing at the summit of this dubious list, you would find the name of Barry McGuire.
In the past nine months alone, McGuire had been fired from thirteen different jobs - all of which had been upon the very first day.
Unbeknownst to the companies who hire him, McGuire is playing an outrageous and secret game to see how many jobs he can get fired from in the most outlandish ways.
When McGuire starts a new job for a once-popular toy company, he sees getting sacked as a formality. Yet, through a series of remarkable events, getting fired from this place isn't as straightforward as it first appears.
Are his repeated failures to get fired just bad luck? Is it destiny? Or are there darker forces at play?
Fire McGuire is an unconventional black comedy from the irreverent mind of Steve McElhenny

Barry McGuire … one might think he’s not too bright, but one would be wrong … so very, very wrong! An Oxford grad with a degree in Mathematics, Barry’s real income comes from uh … a different source … leaving him PLENTY of time for his real passion … playing “the game” … as long as he keeps to eight simple rules! Hysterically funny, madcap at its very, very best and just plain FUN, “Fire McGuire” had me in proverbial stitches! I don’t know how our author does it but, the cohesive magic of this one is stunning! I was rocked to my core by where this one ended up going! Of course, I’ll not be saying a word here, that would be playing spoiler, just know the turn this one takes is not only surprising and shocking, BUT when all is said and done, it’s stunningly executed and brilliantly PERFECT! The characters are a beautifully crafted delight AND they are ALL voiced perfectly by amazing emotive narration! I absolutely loved everything about “Fire McGuire” - it’s five star shockingly good FUN!
This one is right up there with Draculand for sheer laugh out loud fun. I was in near stitches more than once. Barry Maguire really likes to play the game, and that is… well, you’ll have to listen to find out. 😄 The story is sharp, witty, and brilliantly paced. Steve's writing is on top form here, and Ian Gibblet’s narration and delivery nails the humour and timing perfectly. Easily one of Steve’s best yet, and absolutely worth the wait, mate. Highly recommended listening.
I couldn’t figure out the extent as to what needed to be done for him to finally get fired but it was such a funny adventure to go on. I didn’t expect the plot twist and the little bit of mystery that ended up being incorporated in the story! I was kept on my toes!
