When a mysterious stranger claims to be her fiancé, the fight to save her land turns into a battle for her heart.
Daviana Spalding dreams of leaving Georgia in search of a place where she can prove her worth as more than a claim to land. And when a handsome and kind stranger wanders onto the farm in need of help, she can’t help but see him in those dreams too. Yet those are only daydreams…until the Freedmen’s Bureau shows up threatening to take their land, and her guest steps forward claiming to be her betrothed.
Simon McNeil is a man haunted by his past and his time in a Confederate prison, seeking redemption and a fresh start back in Alabama. But his journey home is delayed when a bout of malaria keeps him bedridden, depending on strangers for help. As Daviana nurses him back to health, Simon is drawn to her strength and beauty, and when her home is threatened, he steps in to help.
When their fake engagement becomes real, Simon and Daviana must confront their feelings for one another as they face escalating threats that could tear them apart. And when a long-lost friend returns, all their plans could come crashing down.
Seeking Simon is a stirring addition to the wonderful Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series. As a big fan of this series, I was looking forward to Simon’s story, and it definitely met and exceeded my expectations. In this snapshot of post-Civil War life in the South, the author paints a realistic picture of a nation recovering from the ravages of war and especially its effect on families. It was great reconnecting with some wonderful friends from the previous books in the series and experiencing Simon and Daviana’s story. With a beautifully crafted plot, superb characterization, sweet romance, and relevant spiritual truths, Seeking Simon is a heart-touching, soul-stirring read that kept me locked in from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book and the series! NOTE: This book can easily be read as a standalone, but reading the series in order will give you a better connection to the characters. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Seeking Simon" by Susan Pope Sloan is the sweet romance I needed this year. The story of Dottie and Simon starts with an engagement of convenience but quickly blossoms into a heartfelt love. Their relationship is fast but grounded in trust and friendship as Simon steps in to protect Daviana and her father during tumultuous moments.
As with Sloan's other books, this one offers a great blend of romance and historical detail. This time, she weaves in information about the Freedmen’s Bureau, which supported former slaves after the Civil War. I picked up new insights on the era, especially how land and employment opportunities were provided to help people rebuild their lives.
The characters feel real and engaging, from the lovable friends and family to an antagonist who will absolutely make you shiver. You just know he’s trouble from the start.
A heads-up, though: there are a couple of mentions of assault, and while nothing is graphically described, it might be a sensitive area for some readers. There are a few tense moments, but they’re handled with care.
This book has heartwarming romance and a good dose of history, making it a great pick if you enjoy historical fiction.

This post Civil War era book captured and held my interest from beginning to end. Daviana Spalding’s life completely changed when Simon McNeil showed up on her family’s land, seeking rest. The arrival of men from the Freedmen’s bureau altered Daviana’s life even further. The variety of characters and interesting plot twists kept me fully engrossed in the story. I loved the way Simon saw Daviana as more than just a means to an end and appreciated the natural messages of prayer and faith woven throughout the story. While this can totally be read as a stand alone, I was pleasantly surprised to connect with some characters from previous books in the series, including Millie and Lydia. Have really enjoyed this whole series. Great book!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. A positive review was not required and these are my own opinions.
Simon was an impulsive young man, sent to law school to escape his past choices. Then the war came, and God changed his life. On his way home, he meets Daviana and her father; while trying to help them save their prosperity, he becomes her betrothed. They face many difficulties in post-war Georgia and learn to trust each other with their secrets. God meant for their pasts to bring them together for their future.
This was a new author to me. The writing style is easy to read, though it took a little for me to get into the plot as the past was slowly revealed along with the present. There is presentation of trusting and following God as Simon changes his life. Although the plot doesn’t give graphic details or scenes of immoral conduct (which as a mark of this era of history), these sins of a character in the story are mentioned throughout the plot and this may affect a younger reader.
I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
What a wonderful addition to the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series. This book can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading them all if possible as they are so well written. I found stepping back in time to post Civil War to be an emotional read as it was such a hard devastating time. I loved the characters of Daviana and Simon as they each brought so much depth to the story. These people possessed a strength that inspires you. The inspirational thread binds everything together and keeps you turning pages to see how the story develops. The story flowed well with a little romance and several occurrences that had you anticipating what next. I loved the sense of family and reconciliations. I highly recommend adding to your must read list and settling in for an emotional read that leaves you saying, more please. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
If you’re a fan of Christian historical romance, you won’t want to miss Seeking Simon by Susan Pope Sloan. This captivating novel is the fourth installment in the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series and delivers a heartfelt story of love, faith, and second chances.
The story introduces us to Daviana Spalding, a determined young woman who dreams of escaping Georgia to prove she is worth more than the land she calls home. Her ambition and strength make her an inspiring character who resonates throughout the book. When a stranger unexpectedly wanders onto her family’s property, her life takes an intriguing turn.\
Simon McNeil is a man battling his past. Having harbored complicated feelings for one of his family’s slaves and spent years embroiled in the War Between the States, Simon seeks peace and redemption. Susan Pope Sloan excels at crafting a story that balances historical authenticity with timeless themes of hope and renewal. The characters are richly developed, and their journeys are emotionally compelling. Daviana’s resilience and Simon’s vulnerability create a dynamic that draws readers in and keeps them turning pages.
Another highlight is the novel’s family relationships. Their interactions and challenges add depth to the story, making it feel both personal and universal. The Civil War era provides a poignant setting that underscores the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Seeking Simon is a fun historical fiction romance novel. It’s also part of an ongoing series that you’re going to want to binge-read! I’ve had the pleasure of reading the entire series to this point and could not love it more! This book brings back in some minor characters from other books. So while you technically could read this as a stand-alone title you aren’t going to want to. Because who can resist reading more books instead of less? Not me! I might have a book problem.
This book follows Dottie/Daviana as she tries to hold onto her land. She is only a woman after all. And that is the whole problem. She wants to have rights and be able to do what she wants without a man. But that’s not really in her cards. Because society says it’s not.
She’s compassionate though. And because of that she nurses a man back to help. What she doesn’t know is that he is going to be her salvation in parts. Because when they come calling to take her land he claims to be her betrothed. And from there it just keeps going!
And just like that she’s engaged! This is a good novel. It takes place just after the Civil War ends while the rest of the series is during the war. The setting is the Georgia/Alabama line. There are some hard topics that come up so you’re aware of them. There are former slaves with children from assault. And then there is an attempted assault. Plus there is a kidnapping and a suicide. I don’t want to give away the plot but I do want everyone to be aware of some of the hard topics.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
What I think you should know: Seeking Simon by Susan Pope Sloan is a historical fiction. It is the fourth book in the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War Series. This book is set in the South in 1865. This book features Daviana Spaulding and Simon McNeil. This book does include characters from previous books in the series, however it can be read as a standalone.
What you might need to know: This book takes place immediately after the Civil War, it includes a lot of harsh realities that I would not recommend for young or immature readers.
What I think about this book: This is the first book in this series that I have read, but found it to be the perfect place for me to jump in. Simon was sent from home as a young man under a cloud of shame because of his impulsive and inappropriate behavior. The ten years since his departure have not been easy and he said in his on words “Every prodigal ran out of road sooner or later.” Daviana has spent years helping her father and brother after the death of her mother. Her father has failed in showing her the treasure that she is . It was very interesting to see Simon and Daviana's interactions. I really appreciate the way the author gave the reader a very captivating story and sprinkled all kinds of wisdom into the story. I loved “you can't force men to change their thinking. Only God can do that.” I really enjoyed this story and will definitely got and read the previous books in the series as well as any future.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own
In Seeking Simon, we have the tale of two people who are in somewhat precarious positions after the Civil War. Simon's is heading home to his volatile family whom he loves very much. He is hoping that he will be accepted back.
Daviana is living with her father who is bound and determined to see her wed and the land that has been in his family protected for her and his future grandchildren. His son has already gone west, and her father does not know if he will ever come back.
Simon stops on his way back home at Daviana's home. He is just passing through but circumstances out of his control stops him in his tracks. As Daviana's nurses Simon back to health, feelings begin to develop. As they get to know one another, both wonder if there could be a future.
Times are changing, and the laws are different from state to state after the war, and Simon sees a way to not only help Daviana but also possibly explore their relationship more when the government comes knocking on her door.
This was a story that was quite riveting and really introduced the problems that people had to deal with after the Civil War. There is danger, family drama, romance, and so much more in this novel. It made for a quick read as I needed to know how things worked out for these two and their families.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
This is the fourth book in the series but it could be read as a standalone. I would recommended reading the previous books in the series as that really helps to tie it together. This is a shorter book and is not overly complicated, a nice relaxing read.
While the writing style is a relaxing read the beginning of the book does leave your stomach in a twist. With a rather realistic but hard to read scene when the main character is thirteen years old. If you have a history of sexual abuse you may want to skip this book. The beginning scene is not graphic but is a bit descriptive. It is very historically accurate and a part of history that needs to be remembered lest we forget. There are no more scenes but the theme does continue and is integral to the story. It is impossible to read a book about the Civil War without this type of abuse.
I enjoyed the main characters love story arc. It was whisk you off your feet with just the right dose of reality. I always enjoy in a series the parts with the characters in past books. This book is about Simon McNeil who was a side character in past books, likewise past main characters are now side characters, or more often short cameos. I very much enjoyed how Davi would get carried away with concocting stories in her head. This is not included in most Christian fiction, and even looked down on in some. Another of her personality traits I liked was how she has doubts and second guessing's. This is treated as just a normal part of herself, she prays and moves on. I simply love how the author treats this! No shame for it, no she is not a good enough Christian. Just I had this thought now give it God and try to do your best.
I received a free copy of this book. My opinions, as always, are my own.
I often wonder how many marriages survived during a time when marriage for convenience was practiced. In this story we see two people who need each other and decide to marry. I don’t want to forget to let readers know that the opening pages of this book are emotional but needed as the story continues. I appreciate how the author gives us a look at a time period that was hard for many.
Daviana is a good character who has overcome many things in her life. She desperately wants to save the family place. The fear of someone coming in to take the land gives her reason to look at different options. I liked how she was guarded around strangers but showed grace when needed.
Simon is a man who is trying to start over after a traumatic event. It is hard for him to share what he went through. When he meets Daviana and her father he is in need of help. As his strength is restored he finds himself wanting to stay. His decision will change his life but is it the right choice?
With the backdrop of a war and tension mounting between neighbors the story is emotional and faith filled. The characters struggle with trust and must learn to see past circumstances they had no control over. Will Daviana and Simon find happiness? Can they overcome their past to start a new beginning? Grab a copy and find out these answers in this moving story.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Seeking Simon is book four in the Rescued Hearts of The Civil War series that is written by Susan Pope Sloan. I’ve read the whole series, however you can read them as stand alones. One of the things I love about this author is the fact that she can transport readers back in time. The Civil War Era is one of my most favorite time periods and she captures it beautifully.
Daviana and Simon’s relationship starts off as a pretend engagement. Daviana has dreams and they are on the edge of being crushed when the Freedman’s Bureau says they are taking the land. Simon, who spent time in a Confederate Prison steps forward and says he’s her finance, Daviana is grateful for his help.
What started off as a fib, starts to grow. Both have some hurt and ghosts they have to deal with. Simon who was a prisoner of war has some deep scars that he tries to hide.
The author does a great job in capturing life how it might have been post War. The South had a lot of healing to do. This book does touch on slavery, assaults and hate crimes. However the author handles it with grace.
The book is well researched and the author is knowledgeable of the time period. The story line engages you from the beginning.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
I really enjoy Historical Romance books, they are one of my favorite genres. Seeking Simon by Susan Pope Sloan is Book 4 in the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series. I have been reading this series from the beginning and have been enjoying the series.
WOW, I truly captivated by this storyline from the very first pages. The 2 main characters in the book are Daviana Spalding and Simon McNeil. Daviana is a dreamer and she wants to leave Georgia and not own land. Simon happens upon her land and she she notices he is in need of help, as he is weak and sick. Daviana begins taking care of him and helping him get healthy again and she is beginning to fall in love with him. Simon steps up to help Daviana when the Bureau threatens to take her land from her. He claims to be her fiance, at a time when he isn't. Simon and Daviana realize through the "engagement" that they both have real feelings for one another and become Engaged for real. I really LOVE how both characters are strong and determined in their own ways. I also enjoy the fact that they help one another with situations that really needed "back up". I could not stop reading this book until I finished! This book is one of Faith, LOVE, and Chances. I HIGHLY Recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. AMAZING BOOK!
𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧 is a fake relationship / accidental love story of sorts that is sweet, engaging, and oh so good. I love a well-written redemption story and one that stays with me long after I’ve finished the story.
I also love stories like this that pull me in quickly and effortlessly transport me to another life and time. What a journey! This depiction of the post-Civil-War era is realistic and believable, without being cringy or graphic, and the characters are easy to connect with. I loved Daviana’s transformation as well as Simon’s. And most of all, I love the elements of trust, faith and heart-changes that only God can create.
If you enjoy historical stories with sweet romance, danger, and drama, this is a fabulous choice.

#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
The opening scene needs to be read with caution as it references sexual abuse although it isn't graphic. It does set the stage for the reader, however, in how the main female character acts and reacts during the rest of the story. It was a short scene, but the reader can see the impact this has on Daviana's life for years to come. The adult Daviana only wants to be seen as an individual with hopes and dreams. She doesn't feel she has worth. When Simon McNeil walks past her house that she shares with her father and asks for a hot meal and a place to sleep for the night, Dottie (as she is known) doesn't realize Simon will change her life. Simon is haunted by years in a Confederate prison and his impulsiveness in the past. He was sent away by his parents to study law before the Civil War and ended up fighting for the Union, even though he was from the South. I loved how he was drawn to Dottie/Daviana from the start and had to win over her curmudgeon father! He was a protector and wanted to show Dottie her worth. This is a great story, and I enjoyed it very much.
Simon McNeil was a bit of a rogue, one who was disinclined to follow the rules. A true southern boy that left the south to become a man, even living through imprisonment in Libby prison. Now 24 years old, he is ready to return to Randolph County, Alabama. Unfortunately his malaria catches up with him in Hall County, GA, where Rufus Spalding and his daughter, Davina are ready and willing to help him. Many young men had been lost in the war and feelings against the North were still very strong for some folks.
When an encounter with some folks that are much less friendly occurs, Simon steps forward to take on something he had not planned. Will this work out for the good of both of the interested parties, or will it cause even more problems with the neighbors? You will have to read this well researched historical novel to find out.
An early copy of Rescued Hearts of the Civil War Book 4 was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
Seeking Simon is the fourth installment from Susan Pope Sloan's Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series. I have loved the previous books and this one is no exception. I adored Simon and Daviana's story. It was heartwarming to read with the element of faith woven within the pages. I wanted to see what was going to happen with the characters that kept me engaged from start to finish.
Five stars is what I am going to give Seeking Simon. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical romance. I am eagerly awaiting the next addition from the Rescued Hearts of the Civil War series, Redeeming Rupert, to see what happens next.
I received a paperback copy of Susan Pope Sloan's Seeking Simon from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Dottie had no hope for a happily ever after. Her brother took off. Her father was sick. Her childhood friend was gone- killed in the war. But everything changed when Simon showed up at her door. GOD knows what he is doing. He knew Dottie's dream. He had a plan.
Simon wasn't looking for marriage or even a future in Georgia. But then he met Dottie. His life changed at that moment.
There were some disturbing parts. It was based in the Civil War times. Much was lost. Men treating others cruelly because they have a different opinion. Sound familiar?
I finished this book quite quickly. I was "Seeking" a happy ending for Simon and Dottie.
This is a love story that grows through lives lived in a most difficult time in American history. I learn so much about the Civil War every time I read one of Susan Sloan's book. She doesn't hide the fact that things people face today aren't new. Human kind with it's treachery and failings existed throughout history. The author takes us through relationships and the conflicts between opposing viewpoints of the day even when they are in the same extended family. And I love that a fresh new love develops during a time when loves seems forgotten. Susan Sone is easily one of my favorite historical authors and I love the Civil War period. If you are like me, you won't want to miss Seeking Simon.
Seeking Simon (Rescued Hearts of the Civil War Book 4) by Susan Pope Sloan is a compelling read of life right after the US Civil War. It is heartfelt look at the plight of women during this time as well as the hardship for those wanting to return home. Daviana Spalding and Simon McNeil begin with different goals but their goodness and caring puts them on the same path. I was not surprised that the fake relationship became much more, nor was I surprised at others who tried to take advantage of Daviana.
A realistic story that had characters who stole my heart. I was pulling for them from the beginning. A clean historical romance that I recommend.
This book was a great read! there was a scene that I didn't like it, but it wasn't graphic, and it was avoided by someone coming to the rescue. This book kept me reading because I had to see how it would all end. Yes, the tears might have fell toward the end of the book when a characters dies. This is a clean love story. I truly recommend this series. There is actually a couple of surprises in the book that I didn't see coming! If a reader likes Christian historical romances based around the Civil War, then I think this is a great hit for them. I received a complementary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this story. I liked how the author tells a great story while sharing about history. I liked how in this story we see Simon learn to look outside of himself and discovery the treasure that is Daviana. I also liked seeing Daviana learn how special she is. I liked seeing the romance between Simon and Daviana and how their love for each other changed their characters into better versions of themselves. I also liked how I learned a bit more about life after the Civil War as the story unfolded. I would recommend this series.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I enjoyed how this book pulled from the previous books in this series and brought familiar characters back. This book is about Davian and Simon and their journey to happiness. The war is over but the bitter feelings are still present in the south. Simon is heading home but makes a stop along the way that changes his journey. Davi questions the man who showed up at their door but she and her pa need his help and protection. Maybe they are destined to be together.
There are many things going on in this book and they all tie together. I recommend this book.
What a fantastic story. The author does a great job of portraying life in the South during Reconstruction, and it was often ugly. Davi struggles with what she thinks her duty is yet wants her own dreams. Simon has secrets and issues he must deal with. They are young but mature for their age – probably a result of the war. I was drawn to them both and rooted for them as they tried to make sense of the “new normal” of life. Simon is an honorable man, and I loved his character. I was happy to see Davi bloom under his care.
Daviana and Simon meet by chance, or did they? Set in Georgia and Alabama, after the Civil War and with God at the helm, these two begin journey of friendship that grows into something more. From the first page of this novel I was drawn into the story and was impressed with the way Simon and Daviana navigated the many challenges of the relationship with one another and those close to them. Good story about a young woman and a young soldier returning from war. He is a southerner who fought for the north after earning his law degree. It has some exciting aspects as she is abducted twice and has to be rescued. Well written with good descriptions of the first of the end of the Civil War.
I really enjoyed Seeking Simon by Susan Pope Sloan. The writing is very good and the suspense and romance just enough without being overdone. If you like historical fiction, you’ll love this book…
A realistic view of life after the Civil War. Families on opposite sides, the heartbreaks, the tragedies, the overcoming. Susan Sloan's story hits all the nerves and all the emotions with a beautifully uplifting ending.
A very nice book to read, it was written by Susan Pope Sloan. This is book 4 in this series, and is just as good the previous 3 books. Even thought this book is in a series it can be read as a standalone book. But I am sure you will want to read the other books.
