“Darkness dwells within us all. Without light, it will consume us.”
Ravaged by twenty years of war, the Riphean Realm is cleaved in two; the bleak and broken Kingdom of Kveld and the wild northern Land of Ellyl.
Upon the ashes of his brother's death, Rieave is crowned the Dark Prince. His dreams of a different life shatter as he is swept up in a storm of betrayal, manipulation, anxiety, and Shadow magic.
Poised to become the mightiest warrior in the King's Army and paired Luhkaela to the prince, Marie is dragged away and held hostage by their mortal enemies, the brutal Light Fae. As she uncovers the truths of her heritage and fae history, she realizes that not everything is as it seems.
On opposite sides of Light and Dark, Rieave traverses more than mythological creatures and magic in his determination to save Marie. While the specter of peace looms on the horizon, she endeavors to bridge the chasm between the species and end the war by saving Rieave from himself. Rescue turns rampage and hope fades to oblivion in the face of a depthless darkness.
Jac-Ann Marie can be found tucked between the pages of a fantasy novel in her forested home in the Pacific Northwest. Her love for magic, unique characters, and interesting stories has inspired her to accomplish a lifelong goal of publishing. Her debut romantic dark fantasy trilogy is planned for completion in 2026, with another gothic fantasy currently in the works.
When not writing, reading, or editing, she spends her time with her husband, raising their three children. She believes in spreading kindness and supporting other authors.
Fall to Shadow is a captivating read that showcases her talent for storytelling. The book immerses readers in a richly crafted world with intriguing characters and a compelling plot. While the pacing occasionally felt uneven, leading to moments of confusion as scenes transitioned, this minor issue doesn’t overshadow the book's many strengths. The narrative’s depth and Jac-Ann Marie's imaginative vision are evident throughout, making it a noteworthy first effort. Overall, this was an impressive debut that promises great things for the next book!
The premise of the story is fantastic with forbidden love between the Dark Prince and his Luhkaela, exploring the world of Light and Dark Fae, Elder Fae, Shadow Knights, various creatures, etc. The character development is well done building slowly as you carry on through the book. I especially liked Kolvar's development and learning a little bit of why he became so enslaved to the Dark King. However, there is a jaggedness to the story in the first half of the book that made it difficult to stay captivated. It's easy to see the intricacies necessary of a story of this magnitude, but a bit more smoothing between the transitions of then and now in earlier chapters would lend themselves well.
I'd rate this book a 3.5, but I'm rounding up to 4 stars as it was really only a flow component that was difficult for me personally in the first half of the book.
Overall, there is a lot of promise in this story, and I'm interested to see how Book 2 progresses.
I really enjoyed this book. If you enjoy fantasy, enemies to lovers and some spice this one is for you! It took me a bit to get into the book, but once the storyline picked up I did not want to put this book down. I loved how the book broke apart Rieave and Marie’s point of views and back story to present. I kept wanting to know more and more about Marie. The ending was definitely not what I was expecting. For sure a great twist! I can’t wait for the next book!
I found this book to be entertaining. The characters are strong and very passionate about the causes that they stand for as they battle against the Light and Dark warriors. I certainly found myself engaged with the book when it came to the fighting action scenes. The details are given and excellent details. I was very impressed. I found the book to be a wonderful read. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
I was pleasantly surprised by this book and at times even had a hard time putting it down. I was thrown off by the pacing of the story, at times it felt like things were moving too slowly but at other times it felt like things happened too quickly and I could have used more development. Overall, I had a good time and I’m curious about the next book. Well done!
“Rules be damned. I will follow her to the end, whenever or wherever that may be. I will always follow her.”
“Fall to Shadow” is a fantastical introduction into the world of Light Fae of Ellyl and Dark Fae of Kveld. Readers are introduced to a plethora of unique characters and creatures that bring the world to life. In its pages lies darkness and light, loss, grief, romance and even a tiny bit of spice 🌶️.
Jac-Ann Marie does a wonderful job introducing characters who complement each other, as well as keep you invested and wanting to learn more about the world around them. Rieave is a tortured soul who readers can sympathize with at times, and then be angry with at others. Marie is an easy to love, loyal friend who just wants to protect those she cares for. Kolvar makes you wish you could reach through the page and slap him (just me? 😅).
In a turn from the norm of Light vs Dark, “Fall to Shadow” favors Dark as the protagonist in the eyes of the main characters. Light Fae are painted as barbarians who want the end of Dark Fae, and wreak havoc as war is waged across the Riphean Realm.
"Darkness dwells within us all. Without light, it will consume us."
The best feeling in the whole world is being magically transported into another realm, forgetting about your real life and just watching the new world around you from a new perspective. I took great pleasure in reading this book, as I could almost immediately picture myself in the Riphean Realm.
This story follows our MMC Rieave, the dark prince who wants absolutely nothing to do with the life displayed before him and our FMC Marie who dreams of becoming Rieave's Luhkaela warrior. There are many twists and turns, lies, deception, and even some forbidden love throughout this book! ;) Who doesn't love a good "forbidden love" trope?! The characters in this book are extremely easy to love and I cannot wait for the next book to come out! I definitely did not see a lot of the twists coming and that ending?! WOW. Such a wonderful book for a debut novel!
This is a MUST READ if you are a lover of all things: * shadow daddy MMC * slow burn * little bit of spice ;) * morally grey * strong FMC * betrayal/manipulation * love triangles * epic fantasy battles
Lies, deceit, secrets, child abuse, and too many villains to count...this book was an intense ride.
What does a young person do when they are raised to be brutal, horrible, and callous, yet they are not? What does a young man do when he doesn't ever feel like he's enough, feels trapped, and when he never is able to live up to the expectations of his father? He dreams of running away from his responsibilities, takes out his sadness on those around him, and continues in his self loathing.
What do you do, as the reader, when you realize this young man was manipulated so profoundly, that you just feel awful for him? You hope with all hope that love prevails and he gets his head out of his ass to LOOK.
Y'all. The whole time, I just wanted Reaive to have a happy ending. I wanted him to stand up for himself and SEE his worth. Instead he is thrown from trial to trial and his self confidence plummets.
I was hoping for some spice, but it was really all build up and talk, plus heartbreak. The story is best friends, to lovers (sorta) to enemies (not really), to lovers (sorta) back to enemies (sorta) I say sorta because not even the main characters quite know where they stand with themselves and one another.
I did cry a bit at the end, during the battle. I was hoping for a happy ending for one of our sweet and caring characters, but alas, my heart was ripped out and stomped on.
This is a great epic fantasy with excellent world building. I love the difference between one of the kingdoms and the other. The writing to paint the world for the reader was so well done, I was able to picture everything so well in my head and feel the auras and feelings of all the places the characters explored.
Fantasy at its finest. Two warring kingdoms and the two Fae thrust in the middle of an epic battle. Rieave’s is the new crowned Prince of the Dark Fae; a title he never wanted being forced to perform duties to his father's kingdom. Rieave always dreamed of freedom. Freedom away from warrior training, his father's disappointment and his mentors cruelty. He wants a simple life with his closest friends Marie and Jace.
Marie is a FMC powerhouse. Training since her youth to become a Luhkaela warrior; an esteemed honor within the kings army. Someday she hopes to be Rieave's luhkaela warrior since it is forbidden for her or any Luhkaela warrior to Mate or fall in love. As long as she can spend her days protecting him and being by his side was enough for her. She would make her heart fall inline.
This story was packed with epic battles, secrets, deception, revelations and difficult decisions. When danger comes forth resulting in Marie’s abduction; Rieave embarks on a mission to rescue his forbidden love but a long the way Rieave begins to experience the effects of shadow magic; a magic to powerful for him to control. As Rieave experience changes and challenges within himself;Marie has found herself in a totally different situation.
Upon her abduction Marie learns about her ties to the Light Fae; the beings she has been trained to destroy as amen er of the Dark Fae Kings army. As Marie learns of her heritage and her connection to the Light Fae she realizes that everything she ever been led to believe has been a lie.
Linea are blurred and once again the battle between the Dark and Light Fae forges ahead leaving both Rieave and Marie in the middle on warring sides fighting a unending battle leading to a climax of epic proportions.
The tides are shifting. Which side will remain steadfast until the bitter end?

Fall to Shadow by Jac-Ann Marie is a dark and emotional Romantasy with some of the most exquisite angst, despair and longing I've ever read. There are also some light hearted moments sprinkled throughout to balance it out though. If you love magic, royalty, love, loss, a spunky FMC and a damaged and brooding MMC then you have found your next read! I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the next one to get here. I read this book as an ARC and it will be released on August 15, 2024. Add it to your TBR and start reading immediately once it is available, I have no doubts you will also be caught up in this world and won't want to let go. Just a little warning- it does end in a cliffhanger and since it is a new release I'm not sure when the sequel will be available. I've already read it twice and I'm sure I will read it again, that's how much I loved it. #falltoshadow #jacannmarie #romantasy #starcrossedlovers #shadowmagic #tbr #newreleasebooks #arcread #bookstagram
This book was amazing! The world building was just perfect and really let my imagination run wild as I traveled far and wide through the Riphean Realm. The characters are so easy to fall in love with but keep you on your toes as they all fight for what they believe to be true. However, as the story unfolds, they find themselves not only questioning themselves, but also those they trust the most.
Fall To Shadow is a dark fantasy with ⭐️strong FMC ⭐️shadow-weilding mmc ⭐️manipulation/betrayal ⭐️dark themes ⭐️anti-hero ⭐️anti-villain ⭐️plot twists ⭐️multiple pov ⭐️love triangle ⭐️slowburn ⭐️spice
I love a good fantasy book, and this one leaves you counting down the days until you can return to their world and see how it unfolds. This is the first book in her trilogy, and I can't wait for book 2. Pre-order this today so you can join the fight on August 15th.
To start, this one was a tough one to rate. I liked where the story was going, but the plot was a bit slow for me. There were some chapters that I thought could have been split into two chapters instead of one long one. Though, I enjoyed the teasing, I struggled trying to keep up with Rieve's feelings when it came to the women in his life. The majority of the story seemed a bit too "naive" for an adult novel, specifically with a few of the characters.
What I did enjoy was the plot twists! And the fact that Marie was portrayed as a badass throughout the book. Her reactions & inner thoughts were very relatable. I also loved that as powerful & distinguished as Rieve was, his anxiety always got the best of him. And let's not forget that ending 😈🤌🏻
Secrets, Love Triangle, Mythical Creatures, & Shadow Magic🤫🧚♂️♥️🔼🖤
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️
This book was chalk full of secrets that made you want to keep turning the page to figure out what the answers were & what was going to happen next. I am a sucker for magical/mythical creatures & this book definitely delivered. I loved all the different folklore these creatures were based on & appreciate all the research that must have gone into this story. The world history & lore was also very well done.🧚♂️🗺️
The characters are also well written & make you love or hate them. I really enjoyed the side characters; especially Jace. There was a lot of character growth amoungst several characters which I also enjoyed. I’m excited to be starting book 2 now as I need to know what happens next!❤️🔥🗡️🖤
This is a cozy, curl up and read debut novel following under the dark fantasy heading.
Starting in the dark realm, we have a dark prince who wishes to have nothing to do with the place his birth standing has placed upon him. If he could have his heart's wish, he would be forever connected to his childhood companion and yearning to live happily ever after.
Such is not in the cards for our dark prince. He, despite trying to hold back what is expected of him wanting his forbidden love, who is in line to become his paired warrior, their world folds upon itself into the brink of war - and it'll shatter everything they both thought they knew about the world around them.
We learn of secret hidden heritages, hearts are ripped apart and in a world we tend to root for enemies to lovers - we actually come across lovers to enemies, darkness overcoming and left with the realization that the shadows, the darkness - has indeed won.
We have manipulation, scheming, secrets, abuse, shadow magic, and spectacular animals.
The Beginning is a little slow, and even at 50% into the book, things are slowly coming out but very slowly. We have manipulation, scheming, secrets, abuse, shadow magic, and some interesting animals.
Omg so once you get past the first half of the book, things really start heating up. There was one thing with Marie I never saw coming omg, that plot twist came out of left field for me.
But even with the story heating up and secrets are being discovered. I have to give my emphatic praise for the creatures within this story are absolutely fabulous. Most worlds forget about the animals and write them the same as they are is current reality but this book takes it to another level. I love it and am here for it!
Rieave is frustrating, bending to the whims of his father, and not listening to his heart. Uggh why do men never learn, they do the the same thing over and over, no matter how many “lessons” they are truly taught.
This fantasy was absolutely gripping and beautifully written—I couldn’t put it down. Jac-Ann Marie created a world that completely pulled me in, with characters I felt deeply connected to. The dual POVs from Rieave and Marie added so much emotional depth, and I loved experiencing the story through both of their eyes. I felt every emotion with them, and Marie’s journey especially had me hooked from start to finish. The plot was full of twists, and I was constantly on edge—in the best way. You can really feel the heart and care Jac-Ann poured into this book. I’m so ready for the next one in the series!
“Live like the realm’s falling to the Abyss. Tomorrow is for dreamers,’” She closed her eyes, “‘Today is for us.”
I read this book as my very first ARC. Jac-Ann Marie did everything that needed to be done for this book! I fell in love with so many characters and felt deeply connected! There are POVs from Rieave and Marie and I loved seeing how they both felt! I swear I could feel the same emotions they did while reading! I couldn't put the book down because I was so invested into Marie and wanted to keep uncovering more of the plot line with her! I felt like I was on a large rollercoaster of emotions time and time again. Everything was so well thought of by Jac-Ann and you can tell she poured her heart into this book. I am looking forward to the rest of this series!
Thank you Jac-Ann for allowing me to be apart of this journey with you and I can't wait for the emotional damage that you are to bring! Much love!
It took me a little while to get into this book, but I did enjoy it once I did. I really liked the premise and the world building done in this book. The main characters annoyed me at points but I'd say that makes a good writer as I'm sure that was how I was supposed to feel. I did really enjoy seeing the relationships develop and how some of the characters progressed but I'm a little upset about how some of their storylines concluded in this book so I very much look forward to reading the next one in the hopes that they eventually get the ending they deserve .
This story follows prince Rieave, the dark prince who is being moulded by the dark fae king. The story is quite intense with good character development and interesting characters. When his close friend, Marie is kidnapped by the light fae, he travels beyond his kingdom with his friend Jace to try and recue her. I really liked Marie and Jace's characters and found Rieave to be quite fickle. A fast-paced story with good characters and an interesting plot.
If you want an adventure which pits Dark Fae vs. Light Fae in a war where moral ambiguity reigns and forbidden love drives main characters to madness, then this is the story for you! Tension and circumstance propel this experience through magical encounters and near-death incidents which eventually pit two long-time friends and potential love interests against each other. I highly recommend this book for its character development and emotional evolution.
A story of an underestimated son, a secret daughter and the trying adventure to find the truth. This fantasy is exactly what you want! No spice, a clever plot and twists along the way. I did feel like there was a lot in this book that could have been left out and the story would have been fine the same way… a little long in my opinion. But the ending definitely makes you question what happens next!
Jac-ann does several things right in her debut novel. She doesn't make the storyline easy to predict, she gives you complex characters that leave you wondering whether they will end up on the side of good or evil, she reaches out and pulls your emotion into the situations each character must face, and then?... ... ... ... She destroys you the way all great books should.
I didn't want this book to end. There was plenty of action and the characters are relatable. As you all know, a book that can make me cry is an automatic 5 stars. This one didn't make me bawl but I did tear up at parts. The ending upset me badly and I hope for a second part soon!! Most definitely worth the read!
Dark vs Light The victor always rules the narrative
Wow....
This book honestly started a bit slow for me and I had no clue where it was headed. However, the amount of things that happened in the last like 100 pages is freaking crazy.
I seriously have so many questions and so many hopes for what might happen next? Who will be the victor and what will it ultimately cost?
Oh my goodness, where to begin? This book is a gothic fantasy. If you like strategic world building, beautiful creatures and a love triangle that is so beautifully written you’ll love the characters even more. This is definitely the book for you. 5 stars really isn’t enough. I have never felt every emotion in one book until this one. Definitely going in my top ten for this year.
This book...I have so many words for it. A story of battling darkness, betrayal, and love. I was captivated, unable to break away, as this story carried me into a world of light and darkness, Forbidden Love, heart wrenching betrayal, and how with truth comes love. I can only hope hearts will be mended and inner peace can be found in the next book.
Every chapter kept you interested and wanting to follow the characters. The writers description of them was thoughtful and intriguing made me feel like I was in the book. I am going to dive into this book again and again.
Fall to Shadow ARC Review! 4 ⭐️ The main characters are great, and the storyline was interesting throughout the entire book. The book does end in a cliffhanger, so I'm looking forward to reading the next book! This is a dark fantasy with a little romance.
Very good book. I love the characters and the progression of the story is very well done with intricate details. Love the fantasy creatures in the book as well and honestly I have a few favorite parts of the book all throughout I think my favorite character is Zabeth. Can't wait for book 2!
