Nate's reception in Asheville is anything but what he could have expected, while in the background the threat of the convoy mixes with Lucas's erratic behavior, culminating in a dangerous maneuver that could cost everything in book 5 of Eve of Extinction.
The 3-million-book bestselling author Mike Kraus, working with Stephanie Mylchreest, brings you a thriller that's sure to hit close to home and leave you wondering "what if" long after you finish reading.
As of 2021, an estimated 97% of the world's financial transactions are digital. What would happen if that digital money - those 1's and 0's - vanished overnight?
The world's major banks are in chaos as a disastrous software upgrade has wiped out their customer's records, resulting in the loss of dozens of trillions of dollars in the blink of an eye. Chaos quickly spreads as the general populace panics, resorting first to theft to obtain what they need to survive before turning to more violent measures.
Caught in downtown New York at the reading of the will for her late mother, Sarah - an ER nurse - finds herself stranded in a burning Manhattan with her daughter Mia hundreds of miles away in North Carolina.
Halfway across the globe, Mia's estranged father learns of the disaster while working as a wildlife photographer in the Amazon rain forest, and resolves to do whatever it takes to make it home.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, a group of Sarah's closest friends does their best to not only watch over Mia, but help guide the survivors of their community as they navigate the treacherous waters of their new reality, discovering along the way who their real friends - and enemies - truly are.

Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).
Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.
Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.
I did really enjoy this book in this exciting, high energy, apocalyptic series! I really like the characters so felt more involved with the plot & do really want them to succeed & survive in this messed up world. Good ideas which I found made this a really great read & a very enjoyable series! I do recommend!
Asheville becomes the focal point of not only unity between the townsfolk under June and the Sheriff, but also an alliance with the neighbouring community led by Elara, a strong-willed leader with her own hidden agenda. Nurse Sarah has a major shock when two newcomers arrive - what does it mean for her young daughter Mia? And when the militia raids their compound, causing massive losses and danger all around, who'll step up to begin the recovery and organise the survivors remains uncertain.
Stephanie Mylchreest and Mike Kraus ramp up the tension exponentially, in Fortify, Book 5 of their riveting Eve Of Extinction series. Grab your copy today and batten down the hatches for a wild ride to survival!
I still don’t like the error of Asheville being categorized as a small town, of having a Sheriff. It’s a little under 95K, but as it is surrounded by suburbs, it’s in the 360K range. Plus, has a Chief of Police, while Buncombe County has a Sheriff. And, a “small town”is considered less than 5K size! By US geographical size, Asheville is a LARGE town. I do like the story & characters, but the misplaced, mis-figured location kind of ruins it for this Asheville High grad.
Asheville is trying to connect with a few small neighboring communities even though the continued threat of the convoy is foremost on everyone's mind. Lucas has left town, leaving behind Eddie's supplies. Nate and Rosa finally arrive to the shock of Sarah. Sadly, before they can settle the convoy attacks with no mercy and they must all fight for their lives.
Bullets don’t usually ricochet off vehicles. They put holes in them and any people inside. That scene is very unrealistic. Calf bullet wounds don’t bleed that much. There are no significant blood vessels in the lateral thigh. Overturned tables provide concealment not cover. Look up the difference if you don’t know.
Really enjoying this series. I can't believe I'm rooting for a deadbeat dad. There are some sad losses in this book but some exciting and thrilling action. I like the interplay of the relationships mixed in with the action. Can't wait for the next book in the series
So realistic, major banks possibly wiped of customers records and money. How will people survive. Chaos reins everywhere. Danger, people are trying to find their loved ones. Couldn’t put it down until the end. What will happen now, can it be fixed. Absolutely outstanding.
His welcome is not what he had expected and most banking transactions are now digital. Then disaster will happen when the banking system crashes and now life is in trouble. How will it all go? Can he sort it out? What is going to happen? See how it will all go
Hate finally gets home, the groups gathered with their neighbors to trade. Then they are attack by the large group . Have they survived t his battle only to face an attack by a supposed friend?
There is a bit more action in this book, though sometimes the repetition about feelings for the past gets a tad tedious. I was saddened by some of the deaths, though some characters get a bit of redemption as well.
I could not put down this book series! The character development brings a realness of camaraderie into familyships (if that can be a word) making their anxieties of the future, their on the spot decision making, their love of family and friends and their humor all the more real. I look forward to more books from this authorship collaboration.
