The First King by Jacob Weldon

Thank you @theanointedbooks for my #gifted copy of The First King in exchange for an honest review.

Recently I was sent a PDF of The First King, book 1 in the Anointed Series, to read and review, and while it’s not my normal genre or style of book I feature on my page, it was fascinating.

Telling the story of Saul, the first king of Israel, Jacob Weldon weaves a historical story of how Saul was chosen to become king, and the things that happened during his reign. Reading this was different from reading the account in the Bible, as this was told more in a historical fiction style. It was exciting, heartbreaking and eye opening to read about Saul from a different vantage point. At times, you could feel his fears, frustrations, and insecurities and it definitely gave a different perspective of the Biblical story while still staying true to the original.

I think anyone who enjoyed historical stories or retellings of ancient history would enjoy this!

I just finished The First King by Jacob A. Weldon, and honestly, this isn’t your typical biblical retelling. It’s the story of Saul, Israel’s first king, but told in a way that makes him feel incredibly real flawed, burdened, and human in every possible way.

As someone who had limited knowledge about this religion or its origins, I found it fascinating to read about a world so rooted in faith and history. It felt less about preaching and more about understanding the people behind these stories their fears, doubts, and the heavy weight of leadership.

Weldon captures Saul not as a distant, mythic figure, but as a man trying to hold himself together while carrying the expectations of a nation. You feel his insecurities, his mistakes, and his rare moments of clarity. The contrast between him and his brave, steadfast son Jonathan adds such depth it’s equal parts heartbreaking and thought-provoking.

What I appreciated most was how grounded everything felt. The book doesn’t rely on dramatics; it’s built on careful research and strong emotional writing. The world feels authentic the political tension, the faith, the fear, all of it woven together beautifully.

Even though it’s was a new experience for me, it never drags. It feels immersive and purposeful, like stepping into an ancient era.

You don’t need to know the background of the book or the Bible to read this book I personally went with any previous knowledge and enjoyed the read. If you enjoy historical fiction that focuses on flawed characters, moral dilemmas, and the weight of power, The First King is worth picking up. For me, it was an unexpectedly insightful and human read one that made me see an old story through a completely new lens.

Thank you to the author @theanointedbooks for the review copy! Your storytelling had me hooked.

The First King reimagines the biblical rise of Saul, Israel’s first monarch, blending historical realism with spiritual depth. Set in 1095 BC, the story begins with the brutal campaigns of the Ammonites and the Israelites’ desperate demand for a king. Through the prophet Samuel’s reluctant obedience to God’s command, Saul, a humble farmer from Benjamin, is chosen and anointed. As Saul leads Israel from tribal chaos into unity, his courage and flaws begin to shape the nation’s destiny. His son Jonathan, unwavering in faith and courage, becomes the fire that pushes him forward. Together, they stand at the fault line of destiny, torn between fear, duty, and the will of a God who demands both obedience and heart.

Rich in faith, warfare, and prophecy, Weldon’s novel brings to life the human struggle behind divine purpose and leadership in ancient Israel. This story is truly captivating. Its historical depth and the soul behind the words are a rare combination of reverence and vitality, transforming ancient scripture into something deeply intimate.

The world of early Israel feels tangible, with every battle, prayer, and silence rendered in striking detail. Jacob A. Weldon’s storytelling is luminous in its conviction and scope. He gives history a pulse and faith a voice, crafting a narrative that feels both ancient and alive.

This is not a quick read, but a really well-written one! Almost 400 pages long and with long chapters, it’s based on Biblical stories and very, very inspired by the Bible, but written with a very human touch of the author. Also, it is worth noting that the book sticks closely to realistic portrayals of historical events and characters without any fantastical embellishments.
The book has depth and emotional weight, and certain scenes, such as loss or sacrifice, might be intense for some. This emotional depth, while powerful, can also be challenging to engage with continuously.
The book has rich historical context, complex characters, dramatic conflicts, and philosophical reflections. It might be perfect for those who are looking for inspiration and insight into the nature of human experience, the importance of community, and the impact of decisions made during times of crisis (aren’t we all living one now?). Faith and character development are something that will resonate with those seeking guidance in their lives (and aren’t we all now?).

This is a well-written historical fiction novel based on the stories found in I and II Samuel of the Bible. I was impressed with how much research the author did to create such an authentic experience while reading this book. I felt like I was there and could envision the action and the settings. It was a little graphic at times, but also set the tone for the way things were then.

It was really interesting to dive deeper into parts that I was already familiar with, but it isn't necessary to have already read the Biblical passages to enjoy the incredible work of this author. It's a thrilling adventure to go back in time with new insight and relive the stories from that era and explore the possibilities.

I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

The depiction of the historical events is rooted in reality and so well researched. Combine that with the emotional depth of the characters and how they come together to shape Israel through hardships, and you get an amazing and inspiring read. Although the story is inspired by the Bible, I think this book would appeal to all fans of historical fiction regardless of their beliefs. I don’t read many historical fiction novels, but this one is special.

I went into this book not knowing what to expect, and it completely took me by surprise in the best way. It touches on so many themes: abandonment, loss, chronic illness, second chances, love, and of course, the rescue dog with behavioral issues that absolutely stole my heart. Emotional, beautifully written, and full of heart, a truly unforgettable read.
