Basically Vampires: A New Adult Urban Fantasy Novel

Rate this book
We would always joke about our friendship lasting forever. Now, it’s not so funny.

Colt Enigati and I used to be best friends. Now we’re at each other's throats. When he left town, I thought I’d never see him again. And when I finally do? I wish he’d stayed away.

Colt is a dhampir, and despite his human father’s hopes that he would miss out on his royal blood, his mother’s genetics are starting to show up. He says he’s a danger to everyone around him.

Especially me.

But when I find him near death and in pain from the transformation overtaking his body, I risk it all to help him fight through the pain. For my troubles, I get a slight graze of his fangs before he can stop himself.

Now, we’re both basically vampires. Maybe that’s not such a bad thing, considering the royal vampire family is coming into town to fight off a moon-mad werewolf and start a supernatural war.

Being together again is stirring up old feelings and complicating our already toxic relationship. But we don’t have time for that kind of stuff. We need to learn to control our newfound powers and find a way to stop the war before it ends up destroying everything we’ve ever cared about.

Including… each other.

Basically Vampires is the second book in the Supernaturals in Training series. This is a standalone in an interconnected series.

This one has to be my favorite so far. Cole and Lacey are everything!! Their chemistry and dynamics is what kept me hooked. As always, Harper A Brooks nailed it with the world building. Definitely recommend!

Lacey Banner & Colt Enigati lived next door to each other until they were eleven when Colt and his father seemingly just disappeared. A decade later Lacey sees a light in their old tree house where they used to meet. Could her best friend Colt have finally returned. He’s in agony. He warns her away, telling her he is a danger to her. She loved him all those years ago and she won’t leave him alone without trying to help him. But this isn’t the Colt she remembers. He turns. She sees his fangs as he leans in and bites her. Only then learning his is a dhampir. The child of a human father and vampire mother.
One year later…
Lacey works with Colt at the Club Mera he owns. A club for both humans and supernatural. She too is now a dhampir, not as strong as Colt since she was not born but turned. Though there is a connection between them. Not sure if it’s because it was Colt who turned her or some other reason, there are times she can feel his emotions before he manages to block her out. She knows that she cares about him, their friendship or is it more? The old feelings rising up again? On the night several vampires enter Mera to speak with Colt, Lacey refuses to stand down. She is by his side as they bring the message from the Queen, his mother, about a disease, moon madness, that is affecting the wolf shifters. She wants him to join her in stopping the feral wolves from running rampant killing and dismembering people. She fears that the disease may spread to other supernaturals. However, Colt knows this is only a ploy to bring him to her side for her own purposes. His mother wants him to accept his role as her heir. To become a true vampire. To marry Irina a vampire princess to gain power within the supernatural world and possibly more. The Queen also believes this madness needs to be controlled by eliminating all wolf shifters.
In place of his mother’s plans, Lacey convinces Colt to visit her witch friends RJ and her sister, Aimee, to see if they can help create a potion to cure the moon madness. However, he also has another motive for seeing the witches. Colt wants to find the means to return Lacey to her human form. He believes in this way she will be safe, no longer a threat to his mother’s schemes or to the supernaturals. Is it because he feels guilty for what she has become or some other reason? Changes are coming but who is at the controls? The Queen believes she has found the means to make Colt bow to her demands and it looks like it may be working when Colt starts to draw Irina closer to him as he pulls away from Lacey. However, the Queen has not counted on Lacey’s determination to save him from something he has always said he never wanted. Lacey will fight Colt from changing her back into a powerless human, even though it looks like Colt will accede to his mother’s demands by marrying Irina and forever leaving Lacey behind. While she refuses to even think about becoming human again, she needs her growing powers to stand by Colt to protect him or perish with him, because she loves him.
RJ and Aimee from “Practically Witches” the first book in the series “Supernaturals In Training” return to befriend Lacey and Colt while being drawn into not only trying to find a potion to cure moon madness but trying to save other friends caught up in the terror. Other characters step into the storyline and join the cast and crew in the continuation of the story as well, Grayson, an old high school classmate of Lacey’s and Mandi, a young female wolf shifter who has been unable to make the shift to her wolf form. There are also several more villainous types that are more than happy to add their hand to the mayhem who will gladly walk over the bodies to gain power.
The story begins slowly as tensions build, danger runs through the night, while intrigue and mysteries raise more questions about what may really be behind the moon madness, a curse? A disease? Or something altogether even more nefarious? And just who might be behind it all.
I believe Lacey and Colt’s close friendship and emotional ties are the beating heart of the plot. While, separating them would make it easier to allow the chaos to reign until the supernatural world may be drawn under control of those in power. However, it may be more than friendship that holds the two together that makes them fight for all supernaturals and each other and if it is something stronger then both may be willing to die rather than allow their world to be overrun. Could the moon madness just be the tip of the iceberg? Is there more at stake than the wolf shifters demise?
I thoroughly enjoyed the tale with all its angst, horror, and suspicions. Leaving me with as many questions as I started, just different. There is an underlying romance and friendships that make this a story one I will read again, because I really feel for the characters and root for the villains to be torn limb from limb. There is a cliffhanger, but the next tale isn’t too far in the future. You still have time to read the first two. I highly recommend this series if you enjoy the world of urban fantasy.

I received an advanced copy for my opinions in review.

Having read the first standalone book in this set of reads, which was so unlike the author's previous books, which are usually yummy spicy, which Practically Witches most definitely was not, and which impressed me big time! In being able to go from spicy to nicey and clean without losing a beat, I was very interested to see if Ms Brooks would carry this through to this book too. This book does have one spicy scene, but it's not very explicit, it's tastefully beautiful.

What was immediately evident is the awesome pacing, the engaging plot and the captivating storytelling. Right from the prologue we get a sense of who Lacey is, a young woman subjected to the abusive whims of her father, a young woman who mourns the loss of a friendship, a young woman who's compassionate and caring and loyal, a young woman who's about to get her whole life turned upside down...a young woman who's taken to her new....situation like a newly hatched fishling, navigating the waters with ease. To me, a book that grabs me so fiercely from the beginning, promises me a great read and Ms Brooks does that superbly. Every time I pick up one of her books I feel the urge to read on and on and on, until suddenly I'm at the end of the book!

Colt is a vampire who'd rather not be one but with his Mama's blood coursing through him, he doesn't have much of a choice. So when THAT thing occurred, he's been guilt ridden ever since. And he's trying to stay away from all things vampire, hard to do seeing he's kind of the heir to the vampire throne... so when a few fully fledged vamps suddenly appear, demanding his help to prevent an all out war, he's dragged into a situation he'd rather have avoided. The worst thing, for him, is that Lacey is dragged along with him. He'll do anything to "fix" Lacey but she doesn't want a cure for her...condition, she's very happy with her newfound independence. It's difficult to get a read on Colt, heck, he keeps EVERYTHING so close to his chest, stoism takes on a whole new meaning. What is clear, and this is another reason I love this author's storytelling, is that he's a good guy, a really really good guy, who's affection for Lacey is... complicated. It's laid out in such a way, the mystery surrounding him makes me want to peel away the layers and get a glimpse of what's inside. Which this author does, SHE exposes each layer slowly and when I get to see the real Colt, I'm blown out of my boots! I really really liked him, he was so wound up in self disgust, he withdraws further and further from Lacey.

As 11 year olds, Lacey and Colt were best friends, they were each others first crush, well, Lacey's anyway but as adults, there's something more lurking, something stronger that wants to break free, only they both are trying to keep "that" contained... yeah, well... Lacey is likeable from the onset, Lacey is fierce and feisty and chisles away at the hard core surrounding Colt magnificently, I loved how vividly descriptive it is, I thoroughly enjoyed the displays of anger, concern and downright digging of her heels. Her no nonsense attitude is awesome, and with a deadly virus or disease sweeping through the supernatural communities, she's not afraid to ask for help and good golly was I ecstatic that RJ and Aimee joined the fray! So, not only does Lacey need to figure out a way to stop this, whatever it is, from spreading, she has to break down the barrier Colt has barricaded himself in, and, as if that's not enough, she has these vivid, disturbing dreams and a sudden onset of.... strange...things...no, can't tell you! Compounded to all of that, the green eyed monster makes it's appearance, her father barely tolerates her, geez, Lacey just can't get a break.

A very compelling read, a plot intricate and complex, woven like a fine tapestry taking shape before my eyes. This author threw me out of sinc with the twists a few times, parts where my jaw dropped, like Irina... I kid you not, I was so set up by Ms Brooks and how she hid many many things with such conviction, well heck, yeah, jaw drop, and parts where my entire body shook in outrage, at the injustice, at the brutally of how Lacey is treated, no, not physically but she's been tormented emotionally so many times, my ears are ringing from the onslaught! And oy! The tension the author infuses in the battles, the tension she infuses in those last few chapters, my heart was hammering so hard I had to physically press my hand to my chest! Ms Brooks builds it all up spectacularly, and just as I think she's going to release me from the stronghold she has on me, she amps it up even more, then lowers me gently, almost lovingly caressing me with ending and I'm smiling like a lunatic. Awesome awesome read!

Basically Vampires is the second book in the Supernaturals in Training series by Harper Brooks, and it’s a wild, fast-paced ride through a supernatural world full of dhampirs, vampires, witches, and werewolves. This installment picks up with Lacey—newly turned dhampir, bar co-owner, and Colt’s not-so-platonic best friend—navigating her half-human, half-vampire life one year after being bitten by Colt, her childhood best friend who vanished for ten years and then accidentally turned her.

This book delivered on what I love about urban fantasy: intriguing supernatural lore, a strong female lead, and a simmering romance that refuses to resolve itself neatly. Lacey is stubborn, fiercely loyal, and delightfully snarky. Colt, on the other hand, spends most of the book emotionally constipated and frustratingly distant, thanks in part to his overbearing vampire queen mother, who suddenly reenters his life with plans that definitely don’t include Lacey.

Their dynamic is messy—sometimes endearingly so, other times painfully frustrating. I found myself rooting for Lacey to get her HEA (or at least some clarity), while mentally yelling at Colt to get his act together. The romantic tension was very much of the “will-they-won’t-they” variety, with a slow-burn vibe that’s more emotional than steamy. While there is one mild bedroom scene, the romance remains clean, making this a good fit for older teens and adults alike who want the angst without explicit content.

The plot moves quickly and is packed with layered conflicts: mysterious illnesses affecting the werewolves, strained interspecies politics, and betrayals from multiple sides. I especially loved the supernatural club setting, which gave the story a unique atmosphere and added to its gritty yet cozy vibe. That said, the middle did lose a bit of momentum and felt repetitive in places, but the ending more than made up for it with an unexpected twist and a few lingering questions that have me eagerly anticipating book three.

Brooks expands her supernatural world here in a way that feels immersive and intriguing. While I didn’t love the romance arc as much as in Practically Witches, the world-building, supporting cast (including cameos from the first book), and the underlying mystery kept me hooked.
If you enjoy found family, reluctant royalty, and supernatural politics layered with emotional turmoil, Basically Vampires is well worth the read. Just be prepared to want to shake some sense into Colt—and maybe hug Lacey while you’re at it.

Although a series, these can be read without reading the first book.

When I picked up "Basically Vampires," I anticipated a fun urban fantasy, but I was totally unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster I was about to ride. Harper A. Brooks took my expectations and flipped them upside down, diving deep into themes of friendship, transformation, and the complexities of power.

From the moment the story opened, I felt the weight of nostalgia as Lacey navigated her feelings about her long-lost best friend, Colt Enigati. Their relationship is told with a fond memory, you could practically feel the spark of their childhood bond. But when Colt returns, he’s not the same boy she remembers, he’s now a dhampir (half vampire/half human) caught in the turbulent waters of his royal vampire heritage.

I loved how the author showed their shared history with the tension of their new reality, making me root for their connection all the more.

The pacing was a thrill ride! Every twist and turn kept me on the edge of my seat. The supernatural elements felt fresh, blending classic vampire lore with new, intriguing twists. I absolutely relished the heat-infused tension between Colt and Lacey, it simmered beautifully as they both grappled with their evolving powers and feelings for each other.

What really struck me were the moments of vulnerability. There were times when I found myself holding my breath, on the verge of tears, as the characters faced their fears and uncertainties. The theme of friendship morphing into something much deeper was handled delicately, and it resonated with me.

As the royal vampire family looms closer and the threat of a moon-mad werewolf becomes imminent, I held my breath, hoping they could control their newfound abilities in time. The stakes felt high, and the author masterfully crafted a world where every decision mattered. I couldn’t put the book down! I had to know how it all unfolded!

In the end, "Basically Vampires" isn’t just a tale of supernatural beings; it’s a poignant exploration of love, sacrifice, and the bonds that can withstand even the most chaotic storms.

If you’re looking for a story that’s rich in emotion, filled with supernatural thrill, and leaves you pondering the complexities of friendship and love, I wholeheartedly recommend diving into Harper A. Brooks’ world.

I can't wait for the next installment!

🧛 Colt & Lacey . . .

Lacey Banner was arguing with her drunken father who claims she is a bum and will amount to nothing. Her grades are bad, she isn’t taking enough classes to meet even community college standards. He insults her. She finally has had enough and walks away as he continues to shout. She stops at the creek and sees the treehouse across the water and a light is shining from the window. Her former best friend Colt Enigati used to live next door. He had been gone for 10 years now. Why is he back in the treehouse? She climbed up and started to yell at him, but then realized his skin was tight, sweat was all over his face and hair, and he was squirming on the floor and twisting his head in obvious pain. He screams and his eyes have pulsing red veins as he tells her to get out! He shoves her away and his pointy teeth are not human! He is a dhampir and is taking on his vampire mother’s powers and might kill her. No matter how he begs her to leave, she refuses. He puts his arms around her and his sharp teeth graze her skin and even she can smell blood and feel the pain now. When he realizes what he is doing, he pushes her away and tells her to run. He roars and she finally drops from the ladder and runs.

So much is happening in Colt’s life. Lacey becomes a dhampir and Colt’s guilt is palpable. Colt’s mother, the Queen, is trying to get him back under her control to have him as her heir. Part of her plan is to have him marry vampire princess Irina to gain more power and to end Lacey’s influence over Colt. While his mother wants to kill off all wolf shifters due to the moon madness and perhaps start a supernatural war, Lacy wants to try to heal them through potions the witches can make. With everyone trying to force things their own way, the danger is all around. How will this battle of wills sort out? Who will survive?

Basically Vampires by Harper Brooks is the second book in the series. I'm just gonna say it, I liked the first book more. The romance in this book just wasn't for me. It was chaotic, and there was a lot of back-and-forth. Like, what was happening? Lacey was doing pretty well after she was bitten. Turning into a dhampir was the best thing for her. She's confident, has some hard-earned fighting skills, is snarky and loyal to a fault, and that couldn't have been more true when it comes to her childhood friend, Colt. I couldn't blame her for fighting for their friendship and wanting to explore the new connection between them. However, Colt acted like an ass for the entire book. He gave me whiplash with his personality switches, so much so that I couldn't tell if he had actual romantic feelings for her or not. It gets to a point where enough is enough. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

Plot-wise, things were good. I enjoyed learning more about the vampires, the politics, the hierarchy, and their powers. The witches are still around, stirring up some things, and there was even a peek at the werewolves. The story was interesting. An illness was spreading around the wolves. It was a bit of a mystery, and the race was on for a cure. Of course, the vampires are vampire-ing, plotting away, however, so we're the good guys. Harper did leave things to the last minute, and I wondered how everything would be resolved. Overall, it was an entertaining read. A third book is already in the works, and it's a good thing because I didn't get all the answers I was looking for, so I'll be sure to pick that one up.

Lacey and Colt were best friends since childhood but he disappeared ten years ago. Upon return, Colt accidentally bites Lacey making her a dhampir, an almost vampire, like him. The only problem is he's a "blood" dhampir, and she's merely a turned dhampir. Fast forward a year and Lacey's adjusting to her half-human, half-vampire state working in a club with her now best friend again, Colt, and life is mostly good, that is until, his royal mother finds Colt and tries to force him into vampire royalty.

Colt shuts Lacey out and she's forced to figure out how to survive on her own when a rampant epidemic starts infecting the wolves. She's got a few friends from the first book of this series, Practically Witches, and a few almost werewolf friends as well, but she's crushed that Colt has turned his back on her.

Can she save herself and Colt from his mother's snare? Will they find a way to stop the infection among the wolves before it spreads to all supernaturals? Find out in Basically Vampires.

I enjoyed this new adult urban fantasy. It included some new vampire lore that I found thoughtful and likeable. The author did a good job at building suspense and left you wondering how the story would resolve. It definitely had a plot twist at the end that I did not expect.

Although in the new adult genre, this book wasn't heavy on romance and didn't include any graphical romance scenes. There are appropriate romance encounters that are described but not explicitly detailed. But for all you, like me, who love a good romance plot included in every book, there's a bit of a romance will they, won't they end up together in there. No spoilers as to whether that happens though.

Basically Vampires is the second book in the Supernaturals in Training series. Lacey, a human, was accidentally bitten by her best friend friend Colt who is a dhampir - vampire mom and human dad. This turned her into a dhampir as well. Now they are roommates who run a bar for supernaturals and humans that Colt's dad owns. Everything is going along swimmingly and then it all goes to pot in a flash.

Colt's mom, the vampire queen, finally finds him and has plans for his life that don't include Lacey. There is an illness causing moon madness in the werewolves that puts all supernaturals in danger. These events set off a veritable feast of scheming and plotting due to old animosities between witches, vampires and werewolves! The story moves very fast and I was hooked from the start!

I really liked the FMC Lacey and was pulling for her HEA but Colt turns into a total jerk. I spent most of the book (like Lacey) wanting to shake his head out of his nether regions. The characters are well drawn and include characters we met in the first book, Practically Witches. The vampires are so deliciously cold and evil. I do wish the author had included some real werewolves that were not either damaged or moon-mad. However, they get their own book next in the series, so I am looking forward to learning more about them.

This book was a fun read and I really enjoyed it. There is one bedroom scene with some mild descriptions but not too explicit. I would recommend this book to older YA readers and any adults that like paranormal and urban fiction. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

I read an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was such a fun and refreshing take on vampires. I loved Lacey and Colt’s dynamic from the start. Their history, tension, and complicated friendship turning into something more had me completely hooked. Lacey’s voice is so relatable. She is snarky, stubborn, and trying to find her place in a supernatural world she never asked to be part of. Colt, meanwhile, is the ultimate broody protector. He is fighting his own instincts while trying and failing to keep his distance. I loved their bond and how messy and real it felt.

The club setting and the supernatural underworld gave the story a unique energy that kept me reading. It had just enough danger to keep me on edge but also gave me that cozy paranormal vibe I love. I also loved how the danger built over time, especially once the royal vampires showed up. Things got messy fast, in the best way. There is a bigger plot brewing with werewolves and magic that really added tension beyond just the romance.

That said, the middle of the book felt a little repetitive in places. Some scenes dragged when I wanted the plot to move faster. I definitely found myself yelling internally at my Kindle a few times. Especially because the beginning and ending were so strong. It did not ruin the story for me, but it did make the pacing feel a little uneven at times.

Overall though, I really enjoyed it. The chemistry, the action, the banter, and the emotional depth between Lacey and Colt made this totally worth the read. If you like vampires who are a little messy and heroes who have no idea how to handle their feelings, you are going to love this one.

2ND book in the series and while it could be read as a standalone, there are characters from the 1st book make an appearance but also this book ends on a cliffhanger so I highly recommend reading in order. This book was a nice read and gave you all the witches, vampires and werewolves with their drama between races including some moon madness that is afflicting the werewolves and power grabs between the races. I think this would be suitable for older YA reader as its low on spice.

Lacey and Colt grew up together and were best friends and always had a connection that went deeper than friendship but one day, Colt and his dad aren’t there. Time jump has Colt returning and he begs Lacey to stay away but she doesn’t listen because she wants to be there for her best friend but he bites her turning her into a dhampir just like Colt as Colt’s father was a human, but his mom was a vampire. Not only is his mom a vampire but she is the Vampire Queen and has been looking for him and she has plans for him that don’t include Lacey. Colt tries to protect Lacey and figures if he can get the witches to turn her back to a human she will be safe but he doesn’t anticipate that Lacey is very strong willed or that she loves him and wants to protect him. I am very excited to see how the Werewolf show up in the next book.

Dhampirs, vampires, werewolves, witches and all the fighting and hierarchy and scheming that comes with these supernaturals are out in full. Colt, our MMC, was born a dhampir, much to his father’s disapproval and much to his royal mother bloodline’s delight. He accidentally turned is childhood best friend Lacey, our FMC, into a dhampir. The rest is history, but not really. I spent half the novel feeling for Lacey pining for Colt and despising Colt for his brooding and wanting to protect her by using the witches to his advantage to try to “heal” Lacey. It almost made me want to stop reading the book.
The plot was decent and had several moving parts and schemes. I love when there are multiple players trying to do different things, all which affect the outcome. The writer did a decent job with having several players between the witches, the vampire queen, Colt, and others.
While this book is a stand-alone, I still have unanswered questions at the end and would enjoy reading the rest of the story.
This would be good for those that like supernatural novels and I would feel comfortable recommending it to young adults.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Cute “Not Quite Vampires” book

This is the second book in the Supernatural’s in Training series and features Lacey and Colt who we met in the first book. Lacey was accidentally changed into a Dhampir by her best friend Colt who she found out was born as one. Her life drastically changes overnight, and she moves into the basement of the club that Colt owns to help him run his nightclub – Club Mera. Colt has been hiding from his Vampire mother all of his life, but now they have found him – at the same time that a mysterious moon madness disease is running rampant with the shifters. Colt is having his hand forced by his mother who just happens to be an ancient Vampire Queen. She wants him to fully become a vampire (meaning to drink someone until death) and marry a vampire princess. Colt starts pulling away from Lacey who is trying to help RJ and Aimee (from Practically Witches) with the moon madness issue. Lacey is doing her best to pull Colt back to her, but it seems she is being outgunned by the vampire squad.

When Colt does something drastic to save her life, she is determined to do the same for him…. Since he is the love of her eternal life.

This was a great book, and I really enjoyed reading it! Cant wait for the next installment of this series.

Lacey and Colt had been friends since she was ten years old and then on day he was gone. All she had was him to help him deal with her father and his excessive drinking over the loss of Lacey’s mother. Then one day Colt was back in their tree house but he was different and he accidentally scratched her and she was changed not fully just part way. To make the change fully required a step that she was not able to do. Colt kept pushing her to work with the witches and go back to being fully human. Lacey just wanted Colt and then one day Colt’s mother showed and there was a major shift in his attitude towards her. Then on top of that the werewolves were getting a disease that caused them to turn in to murderous things that were killing people. Was it a disease or a curse? The witches were working with Lacey to see if they could find a cure. Suddenly Colt announced he was getting married. What was going on as she tied to find out, Lacey was put into situations where Colt was coming to her rescue as werewolves that had the disease were coming after her. What was his mother, the queen making Colt do? All Lacey knew was she loved Colt and she was not going to let him go. Can Lacey save Colt and herself? Can she get the man she has loved since childhood?

A childhood where they couldn’t be separated, leaning on each other like they are their own personal rock garden, them against the world. Until Lacey is left reeling when Colt and his dad suddenly disappear when they’re 11. 10 years later and Lacey never really recovered from the betrayal of his abandonment without a word. So 10 years later when she sees a light on in their old treehouse, she’s storms up in a rage. That’s when everything is changed, for both of them.

While I did love the dynamic between them most of the time, sometimes it did feel a bit forced. I also didn’t care for how easily she forgave him for some of the times he treated her poorly. Regardless of the reasoning.

The rest of the book was amazing. The world building was fantastic, as well as the characters and the relationships we see built. I loved that Lacey was able to find what essentially became her community, and that the author showed how prejudice is still apparent in the supernatural community, it’s not unable to be overcome, and it’s largely unfounded. Genuinely a great read and excited for the next.

Basically Vampires by Harper A. Brooks had me in my feelings from page one and did not let up.

First off—childhood best friends to blood-drinking chaos? SIGN. ME. UP. I was already half in love with Colt from the first flash of memory, and when he showed back up all broody and dangerous? Forget it, my heart was toast.

The whole "we’re basically vampires now" thing? Somehow it was funny, sad, sexy, and weirdly sweet all at once. The push and pull between Colt and the heroine was so real it hurt—like, you feel every ounce of history between them. Every almost-kiss. Every regret. Every little "what if." 🖤

Also, that whole looming supernatural war hanging over their heads? The stakes felt huge (pun intended). It wasn’t just about fighting monsters—it was about saving each other and holding onto that last fragile thread of what they had before the world tore it apart.

I laughed, I swooned, I yelled at Colt (in my head, but it still counts). This book made me feel like I was the one risking it all for love and loyalty. And honestly? I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Harper A. Brooks nailed it. Again. 🩸✨.

I have mixed feelings about this book. i really enjoyed the plot, a strange virus is effecting the werewolf population of the town and could destroy them all, Vampires and witches included, if it is not stopped. It was exciting for the most part and the twists and turns kept me on my toes throughout. I loved most of the characters. The witches are great, I love their dynamic. I really enjoyed learning more about the Royals and the Vampire hierarchy. I had all the feels for Lacey and her situation, becoming a dhampir was the best thing to happen to her and being able to experience this whole new world with her childhood best friend should have been a dream come true... Then there's Colt, I struggled with this character and found myself frustrated with his multiple personalities. To be honest he is a bit of a p*ick and his back and forth made me struggle to root for him and Lacey. I'm usually Team Vamp in 99% of situations but not where Colt is concerned.
Overall I enjoyed the book and the storyline etc but my frustration with Colt stole that 5th star in afraid.
I would still recommend reading this series though and will be looking out for the next installment

What A Ride!!!! Harper does it again in book 2 of the Supernaturals in Training series. I loved reading it and had a very hard time putting it down. I was pulled into Lacey Banner's world and enjoyed every bit of her story. Meeting Colt Enigati was thrilling. He kept me on my toes with his Grumpy Sunshine attitude. I even enjoyed seeing two witches from Practically Witches: Sisters RJ and Aimee. There magic is always amazing to see in action. I loved meeting Irina the Vampire Princess who starts off ice cold and then warms up to Lacey and the witches.
Here are a few quotes that I loved:
"Everything I did was for you, to protect you... Because I. Love. You" He punctuates the statement with a kiss and I'm melting. I've loved you since I was ten years old, Lacey Banner. There's no one else for me". - Colt to Lacey
"You're a lucky man," I remind him "Because I love you, too" - Lacey to Colt
Such a swoon worthy moment.
So, if you enjoy Grumpy Sunshine Men, Slow Burn Romance, Awesome Battle scenes and Awesome Witches then you need to read this series.

Lacey and Colt have known each other their whole lives. Two normal kids suddenly aren't so normal anymore, though. With Colt being born of a vampire mother, his transformation comes and in the process, he manages to scratch Lacey - who in turn becomes a dhampir, too. And although at the beginning it seems the predicament unites them even more, the sudden presence of Colt's mother - who happens to be a vampire royal - changes the situation dramatically, as much as the moon madness affecting the werewolves in the area..
Although the characters from book one appear in this book two, the ties through the plot are rather loose and the story resembles more a standalone. The focus is on the relationship between Colt an Lacey and on their personal development, with the world building now putting the vampire politics into the spotlight. I really liked the insights into how the vampire society works, and the fresh air that Lacey bulldozing through them stubbornly was. Although, I might admit that my favorite character turned out to be Irina. That chick deserves some respect :)

Basically vampires is the second in the supernaturals in training series. It takes us into the lives of Lacey and Colt who we cross paths with in practically witches (book 1)
I was really excited to see this piece come to life and where this story would take us. Lacey's friend Colt disappears from her life just to show back up in their shared tree house. Lacey notices something wrong and vows to stay by his side. One thing leads to another and flash forward to their half human, half vampire adult lives.
I found Lacey in this series to be refreshing in the fact that she wasn't the strongest but she never let that stop her. Her loyalty and resourcefulness did her well. Colt starts out frustrating but comes back through everything even better. I enjoyed seeing our favorite witches pop up and how the unfolding/tying of the werewolves come into play. The cover artwork for all three books is perfect and I'm so glad we have pictures to help us play out these books in our heads. I can't wait for book three and what's to come.

After finishing the first book recently, I knew I was totally down for reading the next book in the series. We actually meet both the main characters in book one, and also get to see some of the characters from book one in book two. I've read books by this author before, and I'd definitely say these are the least spicy of her's I've done so far, and I have no issues with that at all.

We get more of an intro to Lacey and Colt this time, and how they came to be where they are now. They were childhood friends, always together until Colt disappeared. When he reemerged, he is not quite the same person he was before. Lacey doesn't want to leave him when he seems to be in trouble, and then a year later, she's been turned into a dhampir by Colt.

It was a great story from start to finish, and I loved the lore, both new and old, that the author injected into the story to help create the world these characters are living in. I heard there is a third book in the works and can't wait to read it.

This story was like the opposite of a damsel in distress but with the guy needing to be saved (although she did need saving a few times too). I had some conflicting thoughts for Colt. At first when Lacey happens upon him after he was gone so many years, I thought it was sweet & they’d be best friends again but he was distant & kept pushing her away despite their bond. Though by the end we realize he was just trying to protect her, he probably could’ve went about it a different way. Lacey had a tough upbringing after losing her mom & dealing with her drunk dad so her new life was more like a new start but not without more struggles. She definitely has that fighting spirit when it comes to trying to save Colt. The story doesn’t label their bond as being fated mates but them being drawn to each other so strongly gives those vibes. Also hope the next book has more of Grayson since he seemed really nice.

4.5 *

“Basically Vampires” is a paranormal MF standalone in a larger world. It’s not necessary to read the first book, Practically Witches, before starting this one but it does make it fun to see the cameo’s they have in each others books.

As a book it’s low on spice, although not entirely non-existent. With the single POV it is a bit harder to connect to the male main character, and Cole’s behavior doesn’t exactly help in making him the kind of man you can easily connect with. I do like Lacey though, but she already left an impression on me in Practically Witches as a side character. While the storyline in the first book didn’t really connect with the plot in Basically Vampires, I believe the third book will feel more connected to this second one. For me, the story isn’t truly complete yet although there isn’t a real cliffhanger either. I’m curious to find out more about the wolf shifters in book three!

This story follows Colt and Lacey, best friends since kids. Colt disappears without any explanation devastating Lacey. She unexpectedly finds him in their tree house hideout but something isn't right, trying to help she ends up being made into Dhampir.

Flash forward to the future, Colt and Lacey own/run a Supe nightclub, after an unexpected visit from some Ancients Lacey discovers that Colt isn't quite who she thought he was and as vampire royalty he is now being called up to help cure/solve the issue of a sickness that's ravaging the supe community. But as always, all is not what it seems!

With the help of her friendly local witches, a bitten (but not yet turned) Werewolf, a mood locked werewolf and very unexpectedly Colt's fiance Iriana they uncover the truth and set out to save Colt and Mandi from the clutches of his evil, Queen, mother and the other ancients.

Lots of twists and turns, betrayals (for the greater good obviously) and action.

Loved it!

Couldn't get enough of this EXCITING gem! ✨

I loved ev-e-ry minute of this angsty, intrigue filled, action packed, supernatural gem! If you like strong FMC's with snark as their defense mechanism, then you're in the right place 😉. Lacey is resilient, strong, adaptive, funny, protective of the select few she cares about, and on the road to the biggest change in her life. These characters are complex, rich and so full of colors....you just didn't want to say goodbye. This entire world is fun to learn more about in each book. Though it's the second in the series, you could read this as a standalone. However to get a richer experience I highly recommend reading the previous book if you haven't before. This series is so much fun. There are lots of twists and turns, supernatural political intrigue, action galore, and lots and lots.... ok and LOTS of adrenaline lol. Suffice to say this reader gives two thumbs way up. I highly recommend this read.

Although this is the second book you can absolutely read it as a stand-alone (or a prequel to the first) as it follows Lacey and Colt before the events of the first book.

The back story of Lacey and Colt is actually a little tragic and I find myself emphasising with her a lot more. I found Colt and his attitude switches quite frustrating at times as he came across fairly childish.

The initial part of the novel following Lacey and Colt as children I adored! I found myself loving all the characters for being great developed characters, even if I personally didn't like them.

The motives for the characters were on point with the way they acted and I love how even after an event that shifted the focus of her entire world Lacey was still trying to protect those she cares about.

All in a great story and I want to go back and read the first book to put this fresher perspective into focus with the characters.

Our heroine never knew that her best friend was from a vampire family and by the time she found out, it was too late. Now they are going to be together forever, assuming they can figure out how to stay alive long enough to understand their powers.

This is book two of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading required to enjoy this story.

This is an urban fantasy story with a focus on vampires. The story is very well written and easy to read, with a well detailed world that provides an excellent stage for our story. The characters are also well developed and bring the story to life. I like our heroine, who is a bit out of her depth but willing to adapt. The plot is plenty of intrigue and action which keep things moving along. Overall, a highly enjoyable story and I am interested in seeing where it goes next.

Highly recommended.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Holy cow! This was even better than the first book. It’s filled with intrigue and angst and all kinds of surprises. Because we only have Lacey’s point of view, it felt like a bit of a slower build story since she’s searching for so much information about what’s going on. But I found that held my attention even better than if I’d known the whole story from the beginning. Colt was a difficult character to pin down. The chemistry between Lacey and him was easy to see from the beginning, so the hot and cold running dynamic between them was as frustrating as it was tantalizing. I adored getting my wished-for cameo appearances from the witch sisters from the previous book. So, now I'm hoping all of them are going to hold supporting roles in number three.
I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.

Basically Vampires is another good read in Supernatural's in Training series. Here we have Lacy and Colt who we met in the first book.

I really enjoy childhood friends that hook up later in life stories and this one had me from the start. Lacey was accidentally changed into a Dhampire by Colt. Who apparently was born one. Thus changing her life forever. So Colt has his hands full a bit now, he is running his nightclub, with Lacy helping him. He has also been running from his family, which they have found him. There is a mysterious moon madness going around now among the shifters. When Colt's mom who just so happens to be the Queen, wants him to become what he has avoided, he has to choose a life he wants or a life he would hate.

Such a good read with great characters and a good plot. Very fast paced and held my interest from beginning to end. Cannot wait for more!

Lacey is accidently changed into a partial vampire by her old best friend Colt. One year later, their peaceful life is about to come to an end.
So, this is the second book I've read where I had to trust the author because I was so over how the MC was treating the FMC. I really loved Lacey, but I couldn't stand Colt. I don't like bullying of one MC hi another and I felt like this almost went beyond. First we find out that Colt has only told Lacey the bare minimum on being a vampire and makes it sound like the worst thing ever. Then, when he does a 180 on his personality, he picks on her about it, even though it's his fault. If I didn't like Lacey and the overall plot, Colt would've made this a dnf for me. I definitely don't think he made any type of redemption for her to instantly forget how he acted throughout the entire book.
