Book 2 in the next LitRPG Apocalypse Series from bestseller Blaise Corvin, author of Delvers LLC and Apocalypse Cultivation. Sometimes, being the chosen one isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. He is a sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv.
He currently lives in Texas, in a house full of enough geeky memorabilia to start a museum.
He likes talking about himself in 3rd person and posting pictures of himself holding tarantulas. Sometimes, he pretends he is not an idiot with a terrible sense of humor.
It's all very eccentric.
Blaise currently writes mostly in the GameLit genre and LitRPG subgenre, exciting new classifications of fiction where characters either play a game (usually VR), or live in a world with game-like elements.
Delvers LLC is GameLit, lightly LitRPG, mostly a Fantasy/SciFi Adventure. Secret of the Old Ones is hard LitRPG, complete with XP and leveling...plus has Lovecraftian and steampunk elements (because why not?).
3 & 1/2 stars. Still pretty good. a bit grimmer than the last I really liked Apocalypse Cultivation with Heavenly Grimm. This is set in the same universe, although not a direct spin-off. I like this one too, not as much as Apocalypse Cultivation but, meh' -whacha' gonna do? This book is both meaner and softer than book 1. But there is a part that rally pisses me off It gets better after that, but never really recovers the mood. The hero embraces his role in the community and opens himself to trust others, making the end less harsh. But I can't just forget the dark future ahead. Yes I will read the next one, but I hope we go back to Apocalypse Cultivation before another one of these.
There's a lot to this book anyone that's into gaming or understand the idea of lit RPGs and this one was absolutely mind-blowing! The world is caught in an unimaginable game at the whim of gods. Surviving and bettering themselves it's something they have to do to survive this is book two of three and I think anybody that's in the gaming will love this
I love Litrpg . There are just too few good ones out there, and this book 📖 is one of them. I love the story 😀 and the characters. The world 🌍🌎 building is also very nice.
I've read and listened to quite a few lit rpg books, and I have to say this one is up there as one of my new favorites. Great story arc, good character development, nice rpg elements. If you like fighting for your life at the end of the world, this books for you.
good storyline, good world building don’t care for the MC, too many personality flaws, which the authors of this genre have been throwing at us as of late.
Very good story, good world building, excellent power progression. The only issues I have with this story are that the name of the powers are kind of silly in my opinion, the main character instead of being a normal individual is socially, awkward, and mouth adjusted. Why do you authors tend to give us MC’s with this type of personality trait? I’m noticing that this has become a trend and a lot of lit RPG books as of late. a lot of of us who enjoy RPG‘s game and lit game literature are not maladjusted, social introverts, or have personality flaws please, for the love of storytelling start giving us characters who are well rounded well adjusted and behave normally when they’re thrown into unusual or adverse circumstances. Will probably go ahead and read the next book since I’ve liked most of this authors other works.
When it comes to a review I try and separate the quality of the product from my personal preferences. I tend to take it easy on the first book as the beginning of any series can be shaky even from tried and true authors. When it comes to the second book I'm looking for everything that made the first book worth it and then some. This Publishing Company puts ads at the back of books and I find it somewhat annoying when those ads are for books that are not out yet. This series has just the first two books out and when I started book one I thought that the second one was already out. I have a preference for audiobooks and so when I got to the end of the first book and tried to go for the second I discovered that I was 3 days early from when it would be released. Then when I went to pick up the audiobook I found that the release date for the audiobook had changed to two weeks after the ebook. To give you an idea of the timeline it would have been Sunday when I finish the first book, Wednesday of the same week when the second book was to release, and then 2 weeks after that Wednesday when the audiobook releases despite having the same release date as the ebook displayed until at the very least before the day it was to release. Now I have come across this author in the past. Predominantly it was with the two books that he released as a part of the veil verse. It appears that he does not intend to finish off that series which as far as I'm aware was a joint venture between him and to other authors. The main author has continued to put books out for that series and the third author has only done one book. I think this guy has actually finished a series, but I'm not sure and so I'm shy about buying into his work even though I like his storytelling. In this book our main character continues to be pulled out of his shell of isolation as a matter of circumstance. The world is still pretty messed up and the true Invasion starts early. Our main character isn't exactly sure who to trust and has to deal with more death. By the end of the book our main character has been put in a position where when book 3 releases will probably see him having to take a more active role with the community. That is if we ever get a book three and if the story doesn't take a hard turn. There were points in the store where wasn't sure whether or not the characters would be dealing with the local town that was infested with monsters.
I am reading this on Royal Road before its much anticipated Amazon release on 09/18/2024. It is so entertaining, that I plan to also get the book on Kindle Unlimited A.S.A.P. (I gotta' show the author that he is appreciated). :-)
The only frustrating thing about the story is the protagonist's doubtful life priority tree and weird introspection about proper social behavior during an apocalypse.
Example #1: The character worries about properly reimbursing shop owners for goods in a post-apocalyptic store after the fall of civilization and the owners are absent/dead? Really!?!? (That's like worrying about filing your taxes on time after a nuclear war.) :-)
Example #2: The character survives an assault by 7 system enhanced humans displaying lethal intent against him. Later he feels guilt over having to harm said humans. Once again, REALLY?!?! (Heh! I had more sense/wisdom than this protagonist when I was a 12 years old child fighting on the streets of Detroit [we called it little Beirut] in the 1970's...)
Despite the confused logic/cognition and moral system of the main character, I am still looking forward to future books in this series that may finally answer the literary question: "What do you get if you put Forrest Gump in a Post-Apocalypse world setting?" :-)
A good book but should’ve been part of the first book.
This was a fairly good story, but this book should’ve been part of the last book. It felt like one continuous story that was cut in half. The first books ending was rather stupid and didn’t feel like a proper ending. This book felt like it had a proper ending but the start of the book felt awkward. As for the overall story, it was very atypical of an RPG apocalypse story. What makes the story interesting is how the main character reacts to his situation. The story is set in the same universe as the Apocalypse Cultivation series. I enjoyed the first book of that series. The second book not so much. The second book in that series is really took a quality dive so I was very unsure how the second book in this series would pan out. But overall, it turned fairly good. I would definitely be interested in seeing a third book in this series. But I am not sure that the author has any real plans for another book in this series. The first two books in the series was posted on Royal Road, but nothing has been posted indicating the third book would be coming.
An Advebture Worth Taking, A World Worth Exploring
The first Sponsored Apoc was a bit of a slow starter for me, but as I got into the pace more and let go the frantic empowered nature of many current genre titles where the MC is a demi-god for the second week I found more of a connection with this world. Usually LitRPG is junk-food fiction for me. I suspend all disbelief and just go for the ride as a fun bit of escapism. That's not bad, and I greatly enjoy the stories and even the workds many LitRPG create! However, with Sponsored Apoc, I find I can leave a bit of that traditional skepticism on and actually ground the story more than in many of it's contemporaries.
Bottom line, is this book worth your time and money investment? Absolutely! Is the author worth further investment for the long run? Again is say a resounding yes!
I think Miles is a relatable main. I'm sure everyone has had some bad situations like he has in the past. Sounds like his parents were not there for him and he had few adults in his life to look to. Miles learns a lot of lessons and signs. He's going to step into the role that he has been slotted for. They do show the entire achievement and skills list a few times quickly in a row. It's long and I think unnecessary. I think it would be best just to show the changes. Maybe show his skill list at the beginning of the book, the middle and the end. I really like Bacon. I wish he had been in the book more. There were a few typos in this book. Hopefully they do get corrected. This is a good quick read. It's a fun book. It's not meant to be taken seriously. I look forward to the next.
The MC continues to level as he gains allies in the local town’s defenders. Unfortunately, none of the characters are really memorable, though they do have some good skills. Even the Ice Queen doesn’t warm my heart and there are no relationships anywhere in sight.
The MC eventually discovers that not only will he have to defeat monsters, but also sentient alien invaders that attack newly integrated planets have arrived early.
As mentioned before, very well written with consistent world building. There were even some thoughts on why MC’s tend to be anti-social loners. I found a dying hero’s last words to be rather lengthy and introspective for someone who is dying but ok, whatever.
This book was totally worth the wait. I've been looking forward to it since the previous book in the series. If you liked the first book, you'll like this book even more because the world doesn't have to be established, it's just constant action. The main characters don't make stupid decisions, just a good strategy. It's just well done throughout and really nice to to read. I apologize for any spelling errors. I'm writing this review with voice to text. I'm sure they'll be much better and more well-written reviews to help you make your decision, but I full fully endorse this book two thumbs up
So it's readable first off it's even slightly enjoyable.
But the problems are large and significant.
The other insists on giving the protagonist very wacky powers that he has and then use when unlikely situations that are just perfect for those abilities crop up so a lot of plot armor.
The pacing is disgustingly bad. Two bucks complete maybe seven or eight days? Outside of some books that happen in 24 hours it's about as bad as could be.
Although he doesn't seem to have to work very hard to get new powers he does have to work and take risks and go out and fight so I suppose that's a small plus
Ok, I have to conclude based on the legion-like volume of grammatical issues, stat inconsistencies, and a numbing amount of inner dialogue vs brief spurts of meaningful story progression that editing and revision of this book was extremely limited.
This is a shame. I’ve read some of Mr. Corvin’s other work and know for a fact he can do better. This story is fun when it’s a story! The tedious musings of our spectacularly average MC (cognitively average) pushed me close to rage quitting the book.
Finally, what the !$@#%+!! happened to the genocide renown point!?
The first book started ok and some things could be overlooked, Like the ton of inner monologing. He seriously spent almost a chapters sitting in front of some building telling his upmost inner vomit. Now the MC is still an absolute pushover and he is hesitant to do just about anything. when alone. Doesn't make for a likable character or book. Jeeeze, most of the time he forgets about his skills or what he did just a few chapters ago.
Because of the MC and the author not wanting the MC to grow any at all. I'v just dropped the bore fest for good..
Why does he keep calling himself "Shrug". He hates this nickname, and yet he constantly gives this name to other people. Is he just retarded?
The book has a lot of sections where the MC is "thinking" or describing stuff we already know. This is causing me to skim read a lot.
I hate all the constant whining by the MC whenever he has to interact with others for a couple minutes. I GET IT, i get it, the MC is a socially inept loser, and a gigantic whiner.
The action sections are not as good as in the 1st book. The author describes really massive explosions... and yet it doesn't manage to actually kill enemies. It feels really weird.
Alternate universe, LitRPG, apocalypse, monsters and aliens, champions, quests
Miles has some choices to make in this tale, and even more afterward. I'm wondering if Tom simply have access to the special menu so that he could have chosen healing. Healing others as well as himself might be even more important than speedy travel. We'll see.
Blaise Corvin knows how to craft a story. The MC and supporting characters are interesting and memorable. He's not afraid to kill them off if it moves the story along. I liked the unusual powers of Miles, the MC. He's not too OP. He's got problems that he's dealing with, and that carries the story along. I'm really looking forward to book 3, whenever he gets it written (hint, hint).
love to see an MC who uses his brains and his abilities
Miles keeps on playing it smart as well as gaining power, which is great to see! We get to continue and expand his ability set as well as find new uses for his current skills which is awesome. Get some new plot twists and turns, as well as some emotional moments! Great sequel, will definitely be picking up book 3!
This is one of those books that makes you sad when you finish it because you have to wait for the next one. He’s created a great post-apocalyptic universe here with two main arcs. Do yourself a favor and read them all! Interesting magic/item system for MC with a great storyline.
Oh my Goly Wholly! What a read! We pick up where we left off and 6 hours later I’m tired but immensely satisfied with losing sleep go finish this book! And you will be too! The world expands tremendously, The MC grows by within the system and as a person. But more important oblivion hound gets more screen time!
I like when an MC can take getting knocked around some. There's some pretty good combat scenes in this book. Engaging and a pretty good read. Plus an exploding power. Boom++
"Workman-like" is how I would rate this one. Well executed, but lacking the je ne sais quoi that would make it exceptional. The MC has hit critical mass by the end of this, so this may or may not move more into a base/city-building phase from here. Enough to keep me engaged, so I'll check book 3 out and see where this goes.
Man, it must be hard to make a LitRPG novel different than the others. It is a weird genre, so limited and yet so open to new ideas. Blaise Corvin is a master of the form.
What a great continuation of this series . Great characters , very interesting System and changes in scenes all combined for a book that I highly recommend. Can't wait for Part 3 .. thanks to the author for his interesting take on LitRpg
I love the equipment and advancement system. The characters are very well written. And the dialogue is easy to follow ! Very enjoyable read and can’t wait for more.
