The Divine Shallows

Rate this book
In this enchanting epic fantasy romance debut, two fey sisters are bound by both blood and love, but separated by divine privilege. In the mythical realms of Neramyr, achieving divinity as a warlock or sorceress is to be differentiated as a god among gods where magic is the governing constant.

To possess the moon's markings is to wield her divine power. Every seventh year, a new septet of divine warlocks and sorceresses is chosen by the Moon Goddess. To ascend from the mundane to the exceptional, two things must be achieved: bear the moon's Mark and complete her divine trial.

Daughter to one of the fey's strongest bloodlines, Elyria's very existence has defied the tradition, pride, and faith that guided her folk for generations. Forsaken by the Moon Goddess upon her birth, Elyria is refused the divine marking. Condemned to a life of discrimination and hostility, Elyria longs to triumph over her tainted past.

Born to the same bloodline, Elowyn bears the moon's Mark and is fated to inherit the throne—a title that was once Elyria's birthright. For Elowyn, queendom is a burden she was appointed, but never desired. One day, fate shifts when the Moon Goddess unexpectedly offers Elyria a chance to face her divine trial—an opportunity an unmarked fey has never been granted before.

As Elyria and Elowyn embark on their separate, but interwoven journeys, they uncover unsettling truths about the ancient realms of Neramyr. Secrets unravel, tradition is challenged, love is tested, and the course of destiny is rewritten.

The best way to describe reading The Divine Shallows is to compare it to a vacation one takes to a destination, to which immediately after departing, one knows they must return.

I’ve read many first books of fantasy series that did not achieve interesting characters, sophisticated world-building, or a meaningful plot, and after setting down the first book, I have felt no significant need to read the next.

This was not the case for The Divine Shallows.
While I rather enjoyed my time in Neramyr and felt fulfilled by each new character, kingdom, and mystery that was unveiled, I also had the enduring impression that I would be longing for more by the end. The Divine Shallows was a vacation that granted me the twin emotions of enjoyment and aching; particularly, the aching one feels when they don’t want something very great to end.

Neramyr is a destination I am hoping to return to as soon as the next installment is announced.

This is a debut book in what I read is a seven book planned series. I think that due to this, this first book has a LOT of info - like the first 90 pages felt like all world building info dump and explaining the magic system, the royal families, the different rulers and their powers, and the world that the two FMC sisters are being raised in.

I also feel like the very beginning of the book doesn’t match up to the next 150 pages. The prologue is about Elyria's birth and her lack of a divine blessing from the Moon Goddess. When we jump ahead twenty-five-plus-something years later? I think, we are now focusing on Elowyn, her younger sister. I think I would have preferred a lot more of Elyria in this book, or at least half and half, as she seemed like the more interesting character for me personally.

The premise is set around how every 7 years, a candidate is chosen to journey to another realm and participate in a 7 year trial, where upon returning the person chosen may then receive divine blessings and granted a higher station and prestige. Elyria, which has largely been shunned by her family and subjects due to her lack of divine blessing at birth, is chosen for the trial.

I guess that my confusion is that - everything in this book, right from the start, is setting things up as if this is Elyria's story. But we are reading everything from her sister’s view and perspective??

I feel like if this maybe had been just a novella - to set the world building and like a cliffnotes version, and then we could just go-go-go with Elyria's story, this would have moved at a quicker pace for me. The writing itself is great and technically strong. But the pacing and the plot focus might not work for everyone?

If you’re a fan of strong sister bonds, high fantasy world building, and a long game series then give this one a try!! Lots of other great reviews for this book, it just wasn't for me at this time.

I received a copy of this book for an instagram book tour. My thoughts are my own.

Taking a trip through Neramyr and the 7 kingdoms was truly magical in this book. Everything was meticulously articulated and the attention to detail was so impressive!! Usually it takes forever for me to get into a book that has a massive world build like this one does; but right from the beginning I was highly intrigued on where this story was going to take me.

100/10 read!! You won’t regret it 🫶🏼

Drawn in by the cover! I usually don’t read fantasy, but I just fell in love with the sisters as I started reading. The characters really shine in this book and I couldn’t put it down. I started reading for the characters, kept reading for the plot, and rated it 5 stars for chapters 23 & 24. The story has me hooked and I literally cannot wait for the next book!!!

Incredible, refreshing world-building and lore set an amazing backdrop for a story filled with SO many characters I deeply enjoyed and who clearly have secrets to share in the coming books.

The Divine Shallows does a remarkable job of unfolding the astonishing world of Neramyr in a natural, palpable manner as the reader watches the journey of two sisters progress down their interconnected paths of destiny. I’m not one who flies through books, but this book FLEW and I need the next installment.

Overdue review but I was letting a bit of time pass before doing this one because I hate doing low rating reviews close to my reading experience... I'm often too harsh on stuff.

I don't know what happened, this book wasn't bad but it felt sooo long before getting to the story. I swear I was on page 120 and felt like nothing had happened yet. It was also weird that the whole plot kinda revolved around Elyria, but we barely got to see her POV. I get that it helps keep things mysterious, but it still felt off to keep seeing Elowyn when so much was happening with the other sister... I was craving some action, some emotions, something, but it was not happening.

Another thing was that there were so many characters, I found it hard to remember who was who especially since it was like: here let me introduce you to this new character only for you to never see him again in this book. So one chapter they seem super important, but then you barely see them. It didn't do well for the book that one of my favourite characters was one of those we saw once and never again. I was super excited, felt like he had so much potential and then he was out... I'm guessing he'll be back in the next installment but it was so frustrating to get me interested only to not see him again in those 400 pages...

Please note that I really hate love at first sight so the romance part was a big no for me and I couldn't enjoy it one bit. The banter felt forced to me, not fluid and a bit awkward. The spice just felt imposed, like these days all fantasy must have a romance plot with spice but it wasn't necessary to this story... or at least in the first book maybe? I don't know, I know I'm the problem but I didn't enjoy it.

I feel like this is such a promising world and magic system, I was definitely invested in Elyria's story. The betrayal, the revelations and all, it was there and was enthralling but after waiting so long for it, I just couldn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. I'm intrigued about what will happen next, but I'm hoping it will be more spread over the pages and not all at the end. I get that this is a series and we have to keep the reader intrigued for the next book but the journey should be as interesting and sadly it wasn't it for me.

Thanks to the author and MTMC Tours for my review copy. All opinions are my own.

I’m the first of three siblings, and we have an amazing bond, which is why I love it when I find strong sibling bonds in books. THE DIVINE SHALLOWS has one if the purest sister bonds ever. The connection between Elyria and Elowyn is tangible, real and beautiful.

Aside from the sister bond, the book’s strongest component is the beautiful celestial imagery and the worldbuilding that revolves around the seven fey kingdoms and the Moon Goddess. I do admit, there’s a lot of information to process at first, but the world created by the author is beautiful, and this book has a very interesting premise, seeing as Elyria is the only royal who has been refused a blessing by the Moon Goddess upon birth. It was interesting learning how the world works and simultaneously seeing the difficulties and scorn Elyria faces even from her own father. It was especially interesting seeing it from Elowyn’s perspective. Elowyn, who seems to be the only person who doesn’t hold Elyria’s lack of markings against her.

The romance arcs are just beginning. For now we mostly got to see things from Elowyn’s POV. Her romantic arc seems pure and sweet, though I confess I would have bet on a different love interest. Perhaps things will change in the future books. As for Elyria, I hope we get to see even more of her POV going forward in the series. I’m curious to see what happens now that she’s facing her divine trial. As far as her romantic storyline goes, there was a twist toward the end of the book that may be setting up an enemies to lovers arc that has a lot of potential.

The Divine Shallows is a treat for those fantasy readers who love vast, detailed world building and structured worlds.

The story follows sisters Elyria and Elowyn, two sisters (and princesses) who love each other deeply, and who are trying to make their own mark in a world governed by the Moon Goddess's blessing and the power plays linked to this magic. Elyria, the eldest sister, was denied the blessing as a child, and this impacts the way her parents and her kindgom regard her, and will cause even more issues now that she must partake in the divine trials. Elowyn, on the other hand, has received this blessing, but despite this she struggles to govern her magic while also fighting to break free of her controlling father's clutches.

This book serves very much as an introduction, establishing lore, introducing characters and setting up dynamics. This resulted in a slower book, but the world building is very fascinating and well-crafted. There wasn't a lot of action and romance for now, but I really enjoyed the sibling dynamic and how wholesome and positive the bond between the sisters was. I do, however, have some theories about where the romantic storylines are headed in the next books and I'm curious to see if I'm correct!

Excuse me but HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THIS BOOK?!

Pardon my shouting. This is one of the best romantasy books I read in a while. I was nervous going in because it only had 5 star reviews and I didn’t want to be the one who broke that but fear not, it is WELL worth those 5 stars.

There was a lot of world building at the beginning which set me off to a pretty slow start, especially with so many E names to keep track of. But once I got the gist of what was going on, this story picked right up. I loved both POVs - both sisters are fantastic and dynamic characters. I loved watching Elowyn find love and friendship and happiness, while simultaneously watching Elyria struggle with her dark secrets, being seen as an outcast, and the looming trials.

There’s magic unique to each realm. There are animal familiars - including dragons. There’s 3 different types of fate bonds. There is SO MUCH that I loved about this book, and with the ending, I’m gonna need book 2 ASAP!

Synopsis:

This story is dual POV following two sisters born to the king of Eriden - one of whom (Elyria), the first born, was not blessed by the moon goddess at birth. This leaves Elowyn as heir to the crown. Every 7 years, trials are held where divine candidates from each realm of Neramyr compete for the favor and divine magic from the moon goddess, and its Elyria’s turn to represent Eriden. This book follows Elyria’s struggle with being an outcast preparing for her 7-year-long trial, as well as Elowyn making friends and lovers as she prepares to lose her sister and her best friend.

**Shout out to Alexandra for the glossary at the end otherwise this review would have taken 2 hours 😂

2.75⭐ rounded up to 3⭐. I wanted to love this story so bad going into it. On paper it has all of the pieces for a phenomenal story with tropes and world building I always find myself being weak for but unfortunately I found myself frustrated with how this book is written and structured. The Divine Shallows synopsis tells us that this is a story largely about a Fae princess named Elyria who at birth was denied what all royalty in history has been given, the moon goddess’s blessing. Yet despite the set up and alluding to the fact that at most this was Elyria’s story of navigating a world where she is a disappointment to her father and her kingdom and at least was a story of 2 sister each with their own povs and chapters we instead spend 90% of this book in Elowyn’s (the younger sister to Elyria) head instead?? Ok fine maybe the synopsis is just giving a poor description of what to expect.

Then while in Elowyns head we get non stop info dumps every chapter for the first 100 pages about the world, its history, and the ruling families. Now I love some world building as much as the next guy but the amount of PAGES of “this is this person from this family their abilities are this and their family crest is this” or lore told in increasingly uninspired ways just felt like everything was being told to us instead of shown and after a while it was just exhausting. And lastly I wish the romance could've been the saving grace but unfortunately for me I am not huge into this intensity of insta love. Our love interest is the most white bread of love interests out there. I can't even remember his name. His family?? No clue?? His likes and dislikes or why Elowyn likes him?? I have no idea but he is nice to her and they have what I guess can be considered “banter” but that’s about all I can say for them. It was just so painfully generic. I spent the book thinking he was going to be a Tamlin and the real love interest would pop up any second and I'd be able to go “Oh that's him! That's our guy!” but sadly that didn't happen. Now I will give credit where it is due. The last 100 pages were decent. The plot finally picked up and it started to feel like we had not only stakes but a mystery to unravel and characters to root for and against and others to question their intentions. It thoroughly left me confused on this book and how i to rate it. Like we get this banger line:

"Do not equate the cost of your aspiration to what I've sacrificed for my salvation."

Which is just crazy that it came from the same book that once said

"He whispered something playful in her ear, rousing her laughter in response"

instead of ACTUALLY coming up with something playful for our love interest to say. I enjoyed the ending enough even that I will consider picking up the second book in this series whenever it comes out because despite the execution I want this story to work so badly! I love the concept. I love the lore even if I don't love how it's delivered. My hope is this is a lore dumping intro to an otherwise wonderful series and that each book the author will find her footing in her world more and more. So yea if the concept of this book intrigues you don't let me scare you away, give it a chance because I really want to have hope that despite a rough start its only up from here for this series.

Thank you so much to MTMC tours and the author for sending this book to me!!

Wow I am blown away by this book. It was so captivating starting from the very first chapter. I love the world building and the Moon Goddess concept. The world had everything you could want from a Romantasy story: dragons, merfolk, gryphons, fey, monsters and a little spice 🌶️ 🌶️

The story with the sisters reminded me of Donatella and Scarlett from Caraval. The seasons and societal expectations reminded me of Bridgerton. The dragons and colorful world building would be perfect if you loved When the Moon Hatched. But this book truly shines on its own. I loved how it has politics and action scenes while maintaining the plot and romance. The groups of characters and creatures in this book really stood out to me. I loved the colorful dragons and well as learning the lore of the fey and merfolk.

I loved the writing style. It felt totally immersive and the dialogue fit so well. I enjoyed the third person point of view because there were so many pieces at play that it made the most sense. I truly felt for Elyria; she has had such a rough life and she truly stood out towards the end and was a total bada**. Elowyn is the sweetest little sister who I loved deeply as a character.

I think this book is excellent, and I cannot wait for book two!

*sigh* I had really high expectations for this, but the writing and writing style was not possible to look past. I almost DNF’d but the plot is cool and has so much potential. So, the writing - way too many commas, qualifiers, adjectives, confusing plot, info dumping, unclear world building (the writing style was making it feel like this was poetic and ancient, but then the characters were switching between formal language and the word totally?), it just did not have the refinement needed for trying to write something this high fantasy. This book was exhaustive to get through, and then the last few chapters were excellent (besides the writing issues which needs an editor). Major props to this debut author for the creativity, it’s really fantastic concepts, and still it needs major refinement to make this enjoyable to read.

Yes! I loved this book. The world building so so in depth that I felt like I was actually in the world with the characters, it left nothing for my brain to have to conjure. The history and magic were very intriguing and was really nice knowing the readings behind everything while still having mystery and secrets.

The romance was very sweet but I think we will be seeing different things happening in book 2, though I’m not certain. I liked the bond between the two sisters, it definitely made me love them more!

2.5 ⭐️ rounded up -

I think the premise and the potential of this world has promise. I think much of the world building felt forced in nature. We didn’t uncover the traditions, culture, and nuances of the world, it was just told blankly to us — if that makes sense? It felt like the author just tried to jam pack all the explanation of the world building, but I didn’t really feel it. It’s also repeated over and over and over again - typically in the exact same phrasing.

I felt a lot of the dialogue felt immature and very surface level.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if the story had followed Elyria instead of Elowyn.

Growing up, I was obsessed with fantasy novels and reveled in the sense of wonder you feel when you immerse yourself in a world where nearly anything is possible. As time has passed, I’ve looked towards other forms of media in search of the same experience, but nothing compares to the magic of turning the pages with bated breath, waiting to see what lies on the other side.

Exploring the realms of Neramyr helped me recapture that feeling for the first time in quite a while. As you embark through the twists and turns of this vast magical world, you’ll find yourself entranced in a way that compares to the most heralded offerings of the genre. As someone with siblings with whom I share a close bond, I particularly loved the sisterly dynamic depicted between Elowyn and Elyria, and I hope to see their relationship continue to evolve as the story progresses. This first installment of the series gives you plenty to chew on while still leaving you craving more, and I’m looking forward to the next adventure this promising young author will take us on in this tale.

This is how you do an epic fantasy debut. The Divine Shallows is beautifully written with complex characters and an enchanting, immersive atmosphere. It’s everything you could ever want in modern fantasy literature.

Tran is an absolutely brilliant author, and I don’t say that for many authors at all. Never did I feel overwhelmed, yet the world-building is massive. Little by little, when the time called for it, lore, backstory, and detail was implemented. Good thing this is only the first in a series because I don’t want to leave Neramyr. Every location has its own dedicated culture that branches from the same religion in different ways. Tran empowers the reading experience when us, the audience, explores her world with illustrative and strong vocabulary. Thank goodness! I love when I feel like the author elevates us instead of over-simplifying words into repetitive nonsense.

Not only does Tran wield her strength in setting but also character development and self-conflict. She truly makes us relate, understand, and connect with everyone. Even tertiary characters! Whether it’s on interaction or many, everyone feels human and not just a hallow shell. This works hand in hand with the fact that all the chapters matter in the story, and even more, toward the series as a whole! There’s no filler or over-done plot line that strays away unnecessarily. Trust me, I kept track when I thought Tran might be falling into this trap. Each time, she proved me wrong all the way to the end. I love it!

Honestly I’m just so surprised this exists in 2024. The only other modern fantasy series I could compare this to is Roots of Chaos (to date of this review, includes The Priory of the Orange Tree & A Day of Fallen Night). With such planned intricate creativity, Trans has created (personally speaking) a strikingly unique and engaging beginning story and universe.

P.S. Tran is so sweet too. Ordered directly from her and not only does she thank everyone inside the book multiple times, but she also sent a letter of gratitude that’s handwritten! She deserves all the support, truly. Thank you for writing a new favorite I could escape too, and I can’t wait to see what follows in your career! <3

Perfect for lovers of fantasy, romance, magical system, and representation. This was such a fun read.

At the start, the world-building is extensive, which made for a slower introduction as I tried get used to the details, once I got into the rhythm of the story, it truly took off.

The dual POV following two sisters, Elyria and Elowyn, really shined. Both are wonderfully complex characters. Watching Elowyn experience love, friendship, and joy while Elyria wrestles with her status as an outcast, dark secrets, and the pressure of the trials, gave the book an incredible depth. Their journeys are so well intertwined, and I was hooked on how their different paths impacted one another.

Each realm has its own unique magic and animal familiars—including dragons—and the fascinating concept of three types of fate bonds, the world was incredibly rich and full of surprises. And after that ending, I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

FANTASTIC.

This story is like if Goblet of Fire, Hunger Games, Attack on Titan, and Frozen (lol yes, the movie) had a baby. All the best parts of those stories meshed into one. This was recommended to me from someone who insisted I give it a try, and I am eternally grateful to them because wow!

Why is this a 5 ⭐️?

- HIGH quality writing with a balanced take on fantasy romance (80% fantasy, 20% romance). We get some great romance between some characters, but it does not overwhelm the story and detract from the plot (thank you author for doing this!!!!).
- The world building is finger licking good. I understand this is the first book in a series of seven (gulp), so the first 50%-ish is a heavy immersion into the world. It sets the stage well, but be warned if that’s not your cup of tea this is going to feel HEAVY.
- The fantasy is popping. Like I mentioned earlier, this is the beautiful baby of 4 really cool storytelling/fantasy worlds, and I really enjoyed what the author crafted here. I need to emphasize: nothing in the story feels like plagiarism at all, it just gave me that vibe of the 4 stories and I LOVED it.
- The backbone of this story is built on the relationship of two sisters who are fiercely loyal to each other. The author does a great job depicting their love for each other, while also showing the tension of what they both must face.
- The intrigue, the secrets, the world!!!! *chefs kiss* Major Attack on Titan vibes (ifykyk).
- The authors writing is nowhere near as flowery and poetry-like as say When the Moon Hatched, and I actually appreciated that. With all the world building, my head would have exploded with too heavy prose as well.

What wasn’t my favorite? 😔

- Hot diggity dog, this book felt SO LONG. I learned AFTER finishing it that it’s part of a seven book series and now it all makes sense. If you read the book, you will know why I was frustrated that the big event (Elyria leaving, etc) didn’t happen until you are 90% INTO with the book. I was like, wtf? But now it all makes sense lol there’s many books to come. The author had to set the stage and the elaborate world before the series (and the meat of the story) took off.
- Because of the point above, I sometimes felt like some scenes or events could have been slimmed down in description. It felt too unnecessarily long at some points (e.g. Aunona’s portion) but maybe it was intentional and it will all tie back in like book 3 for all I know!

Overall verdict: The not so favorite parts were heavily outnumbered by the things I did like, and I will think about this story repeatedly in the coming weeks. This is why it’s a solid 5 stars for me!!! No story is perfect, but this was pretty dang close to it in my opinion. I will now patiently wait for the future books to come! Insane potential for this series to really be a hit and I wholeheartedly believe this author is going to deliver fantastic books to follow. So glad my friend recommended this and that I took a chance on it! 💜

Update: omg the author published this May 2024, won’t get book 2 for a while probably 😭😭😭😭 you did us so dirty with how this book ended! I’m going to suffer until book 2!

The Divine Shallows by author Alexandra M. Tran was absolutely perfect in every way. Between the incredible detail, to the history and the overall book, it had everything I hoped for in a fantasy read. I was instantly captivated with just the prologue and stayed immersed the entire time. I absolutely adored our characters, and the sisterhood between Elowyn and Elyria was so heartfelt. There were so many mythical creatures, which is always a favorite of mine. Overall, I truly do not even know how to put into words how much I adored this book.

⭐️ 4.75/5

We immediately dive into Neramyr, while getting to know our characters we also get to learn quite a bit of lore through them. The world building was absolutely incredible, the detail was all there and I was easily able to immerse myself into this world. Everything was extremely well articulated, and I truly mean it was beyond elegantly written. As we continue, we journey through its 7 kingdoms. This was such a fun time and I loved the vast differences between them all. The magic systems and the terminology were extremely intriguing, and I felt like I was able to easily grasp the details and understand it. Our characters were fantastic, I felt quite the attachment to Elyria as an older sister myself. Elyria is a complex character, and I aspire to be as strong as she is despite the hand she was dealt. I also adored our FMC Elowyn. She was such a sweet character, I truly believe she is the embodiment of kindness. I loved the relationship between the two sisters as it reminded me of my own relationship with my younger sister. I cannot wait to see where Elowyn’s story goes in the next book. We also get to meet quite a few other characters but I adored Draeden. His and Elowyn’s dynamic was perfect, their chemistry seemed so pure and sincere. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of our characters, both good and “evil” per se.

Overall, I cannot say enough good things about this book. I believe the only thing I hope for in the next installment would be to get to learn more about Elyria and how her story follows. I absolutely cannot WAIT for the next one to see where our characters and their journeys go.
