2.75⭐ rounded up to 3⭐. I wanted to love this story so bad going into it. On paper it has all of the pieces for a phenomenal story with tropes and world building I always find myself being weak for but unfortunately I found myself frustrated with how this book is written and structured. The Divine Shallows synopsis tells us that this is a story largely about a Fae princess named Elyria who at birth was denied what all royalty in history has been given, the moon goddess’s blessing. Yet despite the set up and alluding to the fact that at most this was Elyria’s story of navigating a world where she is a disappointment to her father and her kingdom and at least was a story of 2 sister each with their own povs and chapters we instead spend 90% of this book in Elowyn’s (the younger sister to Elyria) head instead?? Ok fine maybe the synopsis is just giving a poor description of what to expect.
Then while in Elowyns head we get non stop info dumps every chapter for the first 100 pages about the world, its history, and the ruling families. Now I love some world building as much as the next guy but the amount of PAGES of “this is this person from this family their abilities are this and their family crest is this” or lore told in increasingly uninspired ways just felt like everything was being told to us instead of shown and after a while it was just exhausting. And lastly I wish the romance could've been the saving grace but unfortunately for me I am not huge into this intensity of insta love. Our love interest is the most white bread of love interests out there. I can't even remember his name. His family?? No clue?? His likes and dislikes or why Elowyn likes him?? I have no idea but he is nice to her and they have what I guess can be considered “banter” but that’s about all I can say for them. It was just so painfully generic. I spent the book thinking he was going to be a Tamlin and the real love interest would pop up any second and I'd be able to go “Oh that's him! That's our guy!” but sadly that didn't happen. Now I will give credit where it is due. The last 100 pages were decent. The plot finally picked up and it started to feel like we had not only stakes but a mystery to unravel and characters to root for and against and others to question their intentions. It thoroughly left me confused on this book and how i to rate it. Like we get this banger line:
"Do not equate the cost of your aspiration to what I've sacrificed for my salvation."
Which is just crazy that it came from the same book that once said
"He whispered something playful in her ear, rousing her laughter in response"
instead of ACTUALLY coming up with something playful for our love interest to say. I enjoyed the ending enough even that I will consider picking up the second book in this series whenever it comes out because despite the execution I want this story to work so badly! I love the concept. I love the lore even if I don't love how it's delivered. My hope is this is a lore dumping intro to an otherwise wonderful series and that each book the author will find her footing in her world more and more. So yea if the concept of this book intrigues you don't let me scare you away, give it a chance because I really want to have hope that despite a rough start its only up from here for this series.
