Arranged as a true miscellany, the book is an extraordinary box of delights that can be read from cover to cover, or dipped into at the reader’s whim. Did you know that while Marilyn Monroe and Charles Dickens loved cats, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler all disliked or despised them? That, left to their own devices, one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in just seven years? Do you want to hear about Tom, who travelled over 2,500 miles in a journey that took him over two years, about Grandpa, who lived to 34 years old, or Himmy, who weighed over 45 lbs? As Colette once said ‘there are no ordinary cats’, and Cats’ Miscellany is the book to prove her right. It is a celebration of every age of humankind’s long, admiring and utterly subservient association with the feline master race, and a work that will delight cat lovers the world over.
So. This book has a lot of interesting facts about cats, but it is poorly proofread. I found one sentence that didn't even make sense. Also, the organization of this book makes no sense at all. I don't understand why the author split up sections on poisonous plants into 4 separate sections, along with the sections on famous cat owners. It's kind of like she just randomly threw all of these chapters together in a hodge podge.
This is one of those books that you can't really hate. A collection of bits and pieces, all about cats. Whether it's lists of cat names, advice on grooming, famous quotes or historical figures and their pets, there's lots of little fascinating things to read. All accompanied by the most amazing sketches and cartoons.
My favourite quote ...
"The difference between a cat and a dog. A dog thinks; 'They feed me, they shelter me, they love me, they must be gods.' A cat thinks; 'They feed me, they shelter me, they love me, I must be a god.'
Gave this book as a gift & it was loved. Great information for future cat owners & those who love cat facts. There’s also a lot of great cat name options, as well as a large amount of cat quotes.
A pot-pouri of stuff about cats, ranging from their ancestry, physiology, behavioural characteristics, their likes and dislikes, famous cat owners and cat dislikers (ailurophiles and ailurophobes), journeys made, often involuntarily, often to be re-united with long-lost owners, cat lore, how to befriend a cat, etc, etc, etc. A delightful mix for dipping into.
So many fun and interesting facts and legends about our feline companions. Famous cats, famous people who owned cats. Cats in art. Cats in history. Lots of cat trivia
Some interesting facts. Mostly a conglomerate of different things, no topic was deeply covered. Wish they had included the Art in the Cats in Art section but no. Still was fine for the sale price.
A wonderful little book all about cats. This book covers many different areas concerning cats and is quite humorous. I would recommend this book to any cat lover.
Pleasant read for cat lovers. Lots of tidbits of information, ranging from favorite cat names, apocryphal cat stories, famous cat owners, poisonous plants, etc. Good gift.
A really cute little cat book, filled with interesting tidbits. Some of the information wasn't new to me, but I enjoyed the refresher course in my favorite animal (shhh, don't tell my dogs I said that!)
There's a little something of everything, from historical figures who owned cats, to things that are poisonous to them. There's a few bits of humour that break the book up nicely, as well as a couple of illustrations. I bought this one at a store that sells unwanted copies of first hand books for cheap, and now I can add it to my cat collection with glee. Five stars!
A very funny, adorable little book that cat lovers will enjoy. I agree with some reviewers that it could've been better proofread or organized, but for a gift book you can't ask for much more than this gives you.
I loved this book! Filled with cat quotes and facts, it made me laugh out loud. My cat Jake, has done most of the things written about in this book. Purrfect book for cat lovers :)
Very cute and had some great facts and historical stories of cat owners such as Harriet Beecher Stow, H.G. Wells, and Queen Victoria. Any cat lover should scoop this one up.
