Excellent addition to my collection of witchcraft books. My familiar passed away last fall so I am not currently able to use the book in that way BUT I very much enjoyed reading it. When and if I next have an opportunity to develop a relationship with a new familiar, this book will be my go-to. Or if I become ready to call in a new familiar, this book will aid me.

The book was through, light-hearted and exactly what I was looking for. I loved the Slavic additions as unfortunately anything about Slavic magic is hard to come by

The idea of the witch's familiar is so deeply embedded in our image of Witchcraft that it's surprising how few books really explore the subject in depth. We all know the stereotypical black cat sitting beside the witch, but what actually makes an animal a familiar rather than a beloved pet? What does that relationship look like magically? How do we communicate with an animal ally, involve them in our practice, protect them, and honor the fact that they are living beings with their own agency and consciousness? Madame Pamita dives into all of this and so much more in The Witch's Guide to Animal Familiars.
One of the things I appreciated most is the distinction between familiars, pets, spirit guides, messengers, and other forms of animal allies. Rather than assuming any animal we love must therefore be our familiar, Pamita encourages us to understand the particular nature of these relationships. She also moves far beyond the stereotypical cat. Dogs, birds, rodents, reptiles, fish, farm animals, wild animals, and many other creatures all have a place here.
The book is packed with practical material. There are spells, rituals, recipes, exercises, and projects for connecting and communicating with animal allies, strengthening psychic bonds, incorporating familiars into magical work, exchanging energy, offering protection, and deepening the relationship over time. I especially appreciated that she doesn't shy away from the full life cycle of that relationship, including aging, death, and helping an animal companion through end-of-life transitions. That gives the book a tenderness I wasn't necessarily expecting.
There's also a wonderful mixture of folklore, history, mythology, animal behavior, healing traditions, folk magic, and magical practice throughout the book. I particularly enjoyed the Slavic material woven into the text, since those traditions aren't represented nearly as often in contemporary Witchcraft books. It gives the book a distinctive flavor while still drawing from a broad range of ideas.
Most importantly, animals aren't treated as magical tools or accessories. The relationship is reciprocal. They have their own consciousness, needs, boundaries, abilities, and things to teach us. I loved this underlying animistic approach because it transforms familiar work from "how can this animal help my magic?" into a much more interesting question of what kind of relationship can develop between two different forms of consciousness working together.
Madame Pamita's warmth comes through on every page. Her love of animals is obvious, and she has a wonderful ability to make magical practices approachable without stripping them of meaning. Beginners will find an excellent foundation here, but there's enough depth and practical material that people who have worked with animal familiars for years can still find new things to experiment with.
The Witch's Guide to Animal Familiars takes one of the most iconic images in Witchcraft and reminds us that there is an entire magical practice hiding behind it. It's practical, thoughtful, compassionate, and filled with ideas I'll return to again and again. Whether you already share your life with an animal familiar, are hoping to develop that kind of relationship someday, or simply want to understand the magical bonds that can exist between humans and animals, this is a wonderful resource.

Part of a witch bookclub! I loved getting to understand animal familiars a little more
What I enjoyed: There are a lot of versatile spells, projects and activities to do for a wide range of animals types. I also loved the explainer of spirit guide vs. pet vs. messenger vs. familiar. It is a helpful book that goes broad and deep with the chapters on specific animal types. I did the suggested exercise with letting the dog lead a walk, and she gifted me a little red clover at the end. So fun!! Still working on if she’s interested in being my familiar or just my friend.
What I didn’t love: The last two thirds are chapters on very specific animal groups that can be familiars. Of course, I read them all. But if you’re interested in only one type of animal group, it may feel like a bit of unusable material. I’d recommend in that case, getting a book on that animal magic type specifically.
Bottom line: Yes! I’d recommend this, and I cannot wait to discuss with folks.

Helpful, touching, inspirational and beautiful!
When I started reading, I couldn't put this book down. Some books I have on power or spirit animals can be a bit dry to read and don't hold information on how to connect. This book is different. There are many details, instructions, rituals and tips for beginners as well as inspiration for advanced practitioners.
I've long worked with animal familiars but I still found this book insightful, inspirational and with information I hadn't come across before. I will definitely add some of the suggested rituals and recipes to my practice, both for personal use and in a professional capacity.
What I loved as well is the loving energy that not only exudes from these pages but also the beautifully written text itself that make you connect, feel, and engage all the way through. Fully deserved 5 stars!

Madame Pamitas's book on animal familiars encourages a deeper dive into what a familiar truly is or could be in your practices. She does write on some particular animals such as cats and dogs and then writes about different types of animals as a wild and farm animals. There is not enough pages for one book to cover all animals but you might find a type close enough to get a starting point for further research and connect, which she completely encourages. A great reference for all practices & fun read for animal lovers.

This book is absolutely fantastic if you’re looking to connect with a living animal familiar. It’s great in that with a few spot noting spirit animals and spirit guides. Unfortunately, I was looking more so for animal spirit familiars as I have 5, but I’m working one by one. My first animal spirit familiar is my cat. But you can take some of the spells and rewrite or reshape them to fit your need. Overall, I’ll definitely pull this book back out once I decide to have a living animal familiar.

A lovely guide. Madame Pamita's gentle nature and magickal wisdom speaks clearly on every page. Even if you don't have plans to have an animal familiar of your own this book will enhance your appreciation of the magick present in every living creature.
