The Lost Fae Riders #1

A Vow of Dragons and Storms

Rate this book
Dragons don’t exist anymore. Neither do their legendary fae riders…until I stumble into a mansion full of them.

It turns out the last of the dragon rider fae have been locked in a trap, a mansion with no doors, no way to leave for five hundred years, and I’m the first fae to enter. The dragon fae riders know nothing of the world outside or the vampyres who have taken over in their absence, and most don’t trust me.

Especially not Ziven—king of the forgotten Moon Dynasty.

The gorgeous but cruel king demands I enter the Decidere, a ritual for all fae over the age of twenty. It’s a deadly trial in the dragons’ caves below the mansion, and if you’re weak, you’re dead. Ziven marks me as a traitor, and he doesn’t believe anything I say. He wants me to lose. The Sun Dynasty king takes me in, helps me and is kind. With his help, I might last a week.

With Ziven doing everything he can to end me, my ability to escape the mansion seeming impossible, and dragons literally burning the ground at my feet, I don’t know how I’m going to live through this.

You need to be brave. You need to be a warrior…or the dragons will know.

My name is Story Dehana, and I escaped the vampyres, only to find myself trapped once again with a new enemy who might be worse.

A Vow of Dragons and Storms is the first book in The Lost Fae Riders Series. This is a full-length fantasy, dragon-rider romance with an enemy who might become a lover, found family, the best romance tropes, and a main character who loves reading almost as much as you.

Ah .. I want to give this 2.5 stars

I finished the book but from the beginning I knew it wasn't going to be good. The premise is awesome so I wanted to give it a chance to get better. Spoiler alert - it doesn't .

This is a YA novel that is trying very hard to be dark but the FMC makes decisions only a child or teenager would, not a 22yo adult who has been traumatized. From the beginning they keep taking about this best friend but never explain who this person is or what happened until the later part is the book which is very frustrating since this best friend is a main motivator. On top of that and calls herself a coward but turns around and tells herself to be brave.

There are wild inconsistencies and actions that don't make sense. You can tell almost immediately who the MMC will be well. I'm disappointed because the world is fascinating but the decision making on the FMC is inconsistent and really nonsensical with her backstory. The dragon part also doesn't make sense, along with how to become a dragon rider and the vampire backstory.

For example we're told the FMC most enter this "competition" (maybe challenge?) against her will but then later one of the kings offers to let her out with no consequences but then she chooses to stay in, which is antithetical to her cowardly description. What!?!?!

If you like your sanity skip because now I'm disappointed, frustrated and want to rant lol

I just finished reading this book and my mind is still reeling. There was a link at the end that said, “keep reading here with book two,” and the speed with which I clicked that link hoping the second book was available! Sadly, it is not, but there is no doubt I will be on the lookout for when it is! Talk about a cliffhanger!

On a real note, this book was amazing. It has enemies to lovers, who did this to you, dragons, fae, trials, deceit, amazing side characters, and so much more.

Story is a loveable, fierce, and strong FMC that perseveres even when she has more than enough reasons to give up. And, despite everything she has already been through, her story is just beginning and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Particularly because I have a feeling that the swoonworthy, who-did-this-to-you moon dynasty king might play a big part!

He’s this:

𝘏𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘮, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. 𝘏𝘦 𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦. “𝘞𝘰𝘸, 𝘴𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯?”

A definite read! So so good!

The premise is interesting enough, but the story was predictable, and the characters are one-dimensional. The writing is incredibly stilted and awkward. Meh. Not interested in the next one.

I struggled.

So we are following someone's journal, then we have the heroine dreaming about her past and the actual present stuff going on. Fine right? But was it interesting... No. It feels impossible to connect to the heroine. She says she doesn't trust anyone yet in what 48hrs of which she spent about max of 2 hours with (going by the interactions) the Sun King and she's hugging him????

The heroine is not an interesting character, we keep getting a lot of her being scared and shaking and calling herself a coward. Fair and fine she has been through a lot... (we get the words But don't feel them) Yet in her next breath she's going on about not liking to be interrupted whilst she speaking. Errrmmm blood slave, fine former blood slave "the lowest rank" apparently. Not seeing anything in her behaviour to even hint at that.

I do love a world build but I was skipping over the over detailed architecture. The rooms disappear yey, not. The whole bit added nothing for me. I wanted to actually meet the heroine and connect.

I thought we didn't like the vampires? So why is she keeping things to herself "I don't want to talk about it" it's not mysterious, it's annoying and a set up for a long tedious series.

I normally like to read Bailey's books but this will be another miss for me.

For a writer who has written 153 books I wasn't very impressed with the author's writing style. There might be plot development later on in the story but up to the point I read the book, everything felt rushed and world building vague and sparse. I didn't understand how two dynasties of Fae race could be stuck in the same manor while waging wars against each other, INSIDE the said manor. It was very confusing. I don't know whether the author would have explained it further as the story continued but I actually couldn't connect with the characters or the story to carry on or care about what happens next.

I think I could have enjoyed this more with a different style of writing overall. I’m going to go with 3.25 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me!

PLOT
She’s a fae who was used as a blood slave for important vampires, & one day she escapes. However, she ends up in a hidden fae fort lost to time & society. These fae have dragon riders & a trial all must enter at a certain age. & someone enters her upon her arrival. This book has:
- dragons, fae, & vampire
- deadly trials
- court intrigue
- enemies to lovers maybe? Goodreads tag says why choose as well but can’t say for sure how that’s going to go.
- cliffhanger
- trigger warnings (check them all but SA & suicidal ideation for sure)
- low spice

PROS
- The world was easy to follow & understand.
- I liked how the story was told via our main girl Story’s current situation, her past, & also a book she’s reading. It was fun to jump between those perspectives (though it wasn’t always clear on audio you were bouncing between them).
- Interesting premise! A lost dragon rider fae civilization in a world of psychopathic vampires is pretty neat.
- Ending was a fun twist! Though I can’t say there was any real foreshadowing to it, it did make me go “oh okay this is neat”.

MIDS
- The length. For me I think how short it was detracted from proper story/character dev but if you like a short, quick moving book then this might be up your alley.
- The FMC. She’s fine. It takes a bit of history to unravel her & figure out why she is the way that she is, which is fine. But she’s just, sort of meh from the start. Just kind of like, “yep she’s there.”

CONS
- The writing lacked any sort of subtlety & was very tell not show. I’m not against straightforward writing at all; I don’t require flourish & I really am not trying to be rude or hyper-critical because I promise I like writing of all styles. But this book almost felt like a writing assignment vs. a published novel. It felt so bare bones the way it approached dialogue especially that it almost felt childish, & it definitely is NOT that re: subject matter.
- The short length & pacing of this made it feel like stuff that should have had time to build was being sort of rammed through. & I found this didn’t allow time for relationships to properly establish or for me to really care about characters.

It’s unlikely I’ll continue with this series but I can see why others would enjoy enough to do so!

Rating 3.5/5

The book has a great premise which kept me entertained throughout. I really enjoyed the action sequences as they were well written and kept me in suspense. The dual point of view helped provide great context when needed and I didn't find the world-building too confusing or convoluted.

However, I did feel that the dialogue between the characters was a bit juvenile. It was difficult to imagine these 500-year-old fae speaking in such a manner. Also, it seemed like some of the dialogue was implemented solely to explain something to the reader and didn't flow as well with the rest of the story.

Moreover, I felt that the pacing could have been better. The story could have easily been over 400 pages instead of the 295 it was. Many scenes could have benefited from being fleshed out more.

Overall, I think the story has potential and I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

"I think surviving is all the broken can do until they learn to thrive"

"Because the world needs you. It needs readers, dreamers and people who love without condition"

I received an E-ARC of this awesome book and when I say, go grab a copy right now, I mean it!!

I have read a lot of the author's books before and this one really took me by surprise. There is a lot of world building and we learn about Story's life through flashbacks (those absolutely broke my heart). Story Dehan is fae and a blood slave to the Prince of Vampires and all fae are under the rule of the Royal Vampires. Lesser fae have 3 options in life: breeder, worker or blood slave. Their lives are pretty much work until you are unalive.

Story manages to escape (not without sacrifice) and ends up trapped in a mansion that no one is ever allowed to leave (and no one has walked into in 500 years). Before she can even figure out what is going on, she has to take part of a weekly challenge called the Decidre and if you survive and if the Dragon agrees, you will be a dragon rider.

Story's journey is not easy but she makes some friends / found family and as she continues to complete the weekly Decidre tasks, the more she learns, but will Story be able to learn truth from fiction? Is history about to repeat itself?

This book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster.. Full of sadness, hope, obsession, abuse, bravery, found family, attraction. Please note that this does end on a cliff-hanger and I cannot wait to read the next book!

I desperately need to talk to people that like Ziven, because there’s nothing redeeming there. Even if this was marketed as a dark romance, it isn’t done well. He is so mind-numbingly stupid and has the most random chip on his shoulder. He’s completely inconsistent as a character. The writing was poor and it was just a hella TOXIC mashup of fourth wing and acotar, except with a totally irredeemable MMC that can kick rocks for all I care 😤🤣

the concept of this book was really exciting but the execution was bad. The writing just felt really immature and lacked so much depth. It reminded me of a wattpad story.
I enjoyed the actual plot of this story but just could not connect with our mc Story, she was just a bit annoying. The romance wasn’t good either, again there was a complete lack of depth. It’s annoying because i think this could’ve been really enjoyable!

The MFC is named Story, and with a name like that, she better loves to read. Her love for reading made for an easy connection to her. Story is a soft person in a brutal world. There were so many times when my heart just went out to her. However, she does have a little spice, I liked her evolution into a stronger character now she just needs to keep it up. I have a feeling she's gonna need it.

Two guys get involved with Story. Both kings act like children. Their mind games irritated me; I felt sorry for Story for all the whiplash. Ziven's attitude aggravated me for most of this book, he was a jerk but there were these moments when I could tell he had a heart but he makes it so hard to like him. Then there's Daegan who at some point started giving off weird vibes. He's like a Steffan Salvatore from TVD, and if you know, then you know. There wasn't very much romance and I can totally understand why but I'm hoping more will develop in the coming books.

You think you know but you have no idea. This plot was so unexpected. Cruel vampyres rule with a bloody fist, the fae are beaten down and dragons are nothing but myth. The further I went into the story the more it started to surprise me. Not so much the characters (although they surprised me too), it was the level of detail which included a twisted history that Gem was hinting at throughout the entire book. It was freaking genius, I tell you! I kept wondering what it was all leading up to. Things were fairly interesting during the present but all the dirt went down in the past, told from memories, to journal entries, to spoken stories. And even then I didn't see the twist coming. Like come on and that's not even mentioning the epilogue that rocked me to my core.

Gods, A Vow of Dragons and Storms was freaking excellent. An enchanted mansion, dragon, messy politics, dynasties, rich history, and deadly trials. So many of the boxes were checked and there was so much more. This story was so refreshing, I have no idea what's coming in book two but bring it.

First of all... What kind of name is Story Dehana?! WTF 🤣?! 💀

The actual plot itself it's interesting but I think it needs more work. The process of becoming a dragon rider it's still not very understandable to me?

I think the "romancy stuff" should be more in the background of the story (to be honest I couldn't care less about any of the royals) and the main points of the story should be the overcoming of FMC troubles and learning to enjoy and love life again.

I had high hopes for A Vow of Dragons and Storms by G. Bailey based on the summary—it sounded so promising—but unfortunately, it fell short in several ways.

Right from the start, the story throws you into the action with little to no explanation of the “why” or “how.” The FMC, Dehana, is on the run, but the lack of context made it hard to connect with her or understand her motivations. The world-building felt scattered and disjointed, which made it even harder to immerse myself in the story.

I think this could have been avoided if the author took time to set the stage before jumping straight into the action. For example, starting with a scene that explains why Dehana is running, who she lost, and what exactly she’s up against could have added depth. A detailed introduction to the world, the antagonists, and the stakes would have helped build tension and connection.

It’s just my opinion, but I feel like slowing the pacing and giving readers more background could have made a big difference.

4.25

Uhhhhhh holy crap. I literally stayed up all night to finish this book. The plot twists are so wild and the story itself was beyond as deep as I thought it was going to be. A love triangle…. Well technically a square all for Story?! I don’t even know how tf I am supposed to function right now… I might as well just start on the next book because no way am I falling asleep.

This book is filled with so much goodness I can’t even imagine how G. Bailey came up with this brilliantness but I’m officially a fan. Definitely cures me from my Fourth Wing hangover and got me back into dragon fantasy.

I just could not get into this book. There was no depth to the characters and the story felt all over the place. Or maybe it was because you could tell from the first interaction with one of the main MMCs how the story was going to play out. I hate rating less than a 3, but as I almost DNFed this I give it a 2.

LOVED IT!!!! The author had a pretty unique take on the vampire origin story. Loved that the FMC was flawed- I’m so tired of cookie cutter fearless/ strong/ reckless females still being written. I did NOT see that ending coming 😳.

My only complaint is that the dragons were only a small part and f the story, but hopefully have more screen time in the next book.

Imaginative world of vampires and dragon riders. Told in present with flashbacks, Story, a lesser-born fae, lives amidst violence and treachery as a blood slave to the vampires. Her escape sets off fulfillment of a centuries-old prophecy that might just kill her. A must-read!

This book was very much a basic collection of every romantasy book ever. The book was very predictable and the “shocking ending” could have been seen from a mile away. But did I read the whole thing in a day, yes, will I read the rest of the series, also yes.

I'm on the fence with this one and feel like I'm going to base this on the whole of the series versus the individual parts.

When I saw she had over 150 distinct works, it gave me a bit of pause, wondering if she was just rushing through books to get them released. A little more time on this specific book would have significantly benefited it; it had so much potential.

Like the vampires, the parts didn't feel fleshed out enough but still kept me interested. If certain parts of Story's vampire past were more developed instead of jumping to just the result of the situation, it would have captured the dark fantasy I feel like the book was trying to be. I can't help but think that if it was, we could have understood and related or at least empathized with her traumas. Otherwise, it felt disconnected. There was an opportunity to understand Story's actions amid so much going on that she couldn't process what was happening.

The fae trapped in the manor were similar to the vampires in that their part of the novel lacked sufficient detail. Key elements, such as the trials and the relationships between characters, felt underdeveloped. The trials were either skipped over or too briefly mentioned, leaving me feeling cheated out of the full experience. Given their significance, they deserved more attention. This is a perfect example where quality over quantity would have greatly benefited the narrative.

All of this affected the spice of the novel, and if I could rate just that, it would have been 1 star.

When a story has this much foundation, it's important to explore it in enough detail to set the stage for the future of the book. I don't think it's been captured here. I feel like most of it reads like a synopsis.

In the end, I didn't connect to any of the characters, but I was still engaged in the Story...ish. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I didn't feel the 'OMG, it ended on a cliffhanger' moment; it was pretty underwhelming, considering what I mentioned in the spoiler. Right now, I think I will read the next book that's coming out.

If I weighed it out, I did enjoy the premise enough to overlook the cons of the book. The general idea of the story is enough for me to come back to see how it plays out in the next book. From there, I may change my rating and edit some additions.
