From the outset, the atmosphere is deeply immersive—Aragon paints the Duke’s estate with a perfect balance of eerie charm and a bit of danger. The book's gothic vibes - while not rigidly sticking to the formula - are wonderfully executed, adding to the sense that something ominous is lurking.

Rue is a plus-sized, curious librarian whose thirst for knowledge is both her greatest strength and her deepest flaw. She’s smart, relatable, and easy to root for as she delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding her. Her curiosity pushes her further into danger, and you can’t help but admire her determination even when things start to spiral out of control.

The slow-burn romance does feel a bit rushed at times. This was my main critique: the emotional weight didn’t fully land for me. The side characters could have used a bit more depth, and with a little more time spent developing these relationships. While there are some pacing issues—particularly when things move quickly in the romance and some logic leaps are made for the plot’s sake—the overall story is engaging.

For fans of gothic fantasy and anyone who loves a dark, moody atmosphere, spicy romance, and an interesting mystery, The Call of Chaos is a solid debut. It sets the stage for a promising series, and despite its few shortcomings, it’s a book that will leave you eagerly awaiting the next!

Thanks so much to R&R Booktours and the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

A curious librarian. The mysterious Duke she works for. With a broody winged companion and a book that could change the world.

The Call of Chaos is an absolute must read for gothic fantasy lovers! It is deeply atmospheric, blending gothic and mysterious spooky vibes in such a way that you cannot stop reading.

‘This had to be it. The book was here. Something deep within her felt its presence. Calling to her, beckoning her.’

The author absolutely immersed me in this book with its vibes and made me fall in LOVE with the characters. Rue is a naturally curious woman which fits her perfectly as a librarian. But there’s so much more to her. She’s also a total badass, independent woman.
Her struggles with anxiety on this journey she’s thrust into is relatable, but also heartwarming in a way when Corvus meets her and immediately does little unconscious acts to soothe her. As if I couldn’t already love the two of them more with their banter and Rue’s take-no-shit attitude, those moments softened my heart even more.

‘This brute of a man decided to show up in her home and practically accused her of being the catalyst for the potential end of the world. Even if it was partially true, how rude!’

And Corvus??! Ugh, I absolutely adore that broody bird!! I fell in love with him the very moment we first meet him and stayed in love with him even after finishing the book.

‘This close, she could see long, thick lashes that rimmed his eyes. As much as he pissed her off, he was indeed gorgeous… and somehow, that just made her more mad.’

Rue and Corvus’ interactions had me giggling and kicking my feet like a school girl 🤭 I needed MORE of them!

“You know if you keep making that face, you’re going to get wrinkles,” Corvus said in a very matter-of-fact tone.
“Are you always this charming, Corvus?”
“Just for you, sunshine.”

Have I convinced you to read this book yet? No? Okay, well what if I told you there are two other lovable birdmen, Sabrien and Oliver.

“Maybe we could try and sneak in again and have some of your raven friends scope the place out?” Rue offered.
“Oh, I like this one. She’s got the right idea.” He gave her another little wink. Rue knew she shouldn’t inflate his ego anymore, but she couldn’t help it. Anything to get a rise out of Corvus.
“Thank you, Sabrien. Finally, someone appreciates me.”

I could go on forever about how much I LOVED this book (seriously, it’s in my Top 10 Reads easily), but really you should just read it and see for yourself. I’m telling you, you won’t regret it!

This is a fantastic debut! It has all the spooky vibes you want from a dark academia novel, while breaking it up with moments of humor and witty banter, as well as wholesome friendships. The main character is one of the most relatable I’ve read, and the plot definitely keeps you on your toes. 👀
It was at times fast-paced; sometimes I wanted a little more time to digest big events before moving on, and I wanted a deeper dive into the relationships Rue forged with everyone, BUT we still have the next installment to get more of her loved ones. 😊 (Though I’m not sure I’ll get over what happened to my sweet blonde baby in the last chapter…)
Can’t wait for the next one!

A beautiful blend of gothic fantasy, whimsical adventure and a stunning ensemble of characters you can’t help but fall for - even the villains. This book is definitely part of my pile of books I will reread for every spooky season.

I adored Rue’s feistiness; her drive to fight for those she loves, as well as her softness. Furthermore, Corvus… Not to be dramatic but I would *die* for him. All of their scenes had me kicking my feet and giggling madly. I cannot wait to see their journey together in the next book, and the bond dynamics evolving.

I think out of everything, it was the plot I absolutely adored. It reminded me of a mixture of The Mummy meets Howls Moving Castle meets Labyrinth - the whimsical fantasy, dark atmosphere, and good vs evil/light vs dark.

And lastly, Aragon’s writing was the cherry on the cake. Each sentence rolled effortlessly off the page. I was transfixed from the first paragraph and begging for more reading the last. Truly a beautiful book and I cannot wait for book 2.

This was an exciting, fast-paced haunt of a read that lingered well after the end.

The setting was atmospheric and the cast of characters was full of contrasting personalities for a well rounded found family vibe that I love in a book. (Although I will say there was not enough of Jasper, he's the best scoundrel of a man and quickly became my favorite.)

I read this as an ARC and I WILL be re-reading this upon full release!

Content warnings: Relationship between employer and employee, explicit sexual content, dead parents, nightmares, gambling addiction

This is a really fun gothic fantasy about an estate's librarian, Rue, and the curse that literally haunts her nightmares. Not everything is as it seems with her handsome and polite employer, Ryker, and as the terrors mount, so does Rue's need to find out her own truth and the secrets of the raven showing up in her dreams.

I really enjoyed how Aragon explored connection and introversion in this one, and how so easily those can be twisted to look like isolation. The world-building is really neat, and I found the way Rue responds to people trying to form closer bonds compelling. The pacing is really good, I fell into this read at takeoff and finished it by touch down.

C.M. Aragon killed it with this story. Gothic atmosphere, creepy secretive Duke, and the strange nightmares that Rue (The FMC) that keep reoccurring. I love the relationship between Rue and her brother, after their Mother’s death, Jasper goes down a spiraling path, but they remain close and the love Rue has for him, you can truly feel it through the pages of this book.

And for Corvis, no words just emotions 😍

Cannot wait to see what the next book brings bc that cliff hanger has me dying to know what happens next.

This book has everything I love wrapped up in one- a gothic setting that still manages to be sometimes cozy, lovable plus-sized fmc, found family, funny side characters, spicy scenes, a stoic and caring mmc, betrayal, and a cliffhanger ending 👀

I've had the absolute pleasure of getting an ARC of this book that I've been so excited about for a long time now. The world building and detailing is so vivid that you feel like you're walking the streets along with the characters. The descriptions of everything are just so intense without being too wordy and it's everything I want in my stories. A lot of the time I tend to dislike the MC and prefer side characters but I genuinely enjoyed both in this book so much, though there are definitely some side characters I hope to see more of in the future. The thing that took away half a star was the speed of the romance for me. It felt very rushed even with the circumstances surrounding the characters.

I can't wait to buy an official copy when it comes out and for the next installment in the series!

(I received a free copy in exchange for a review!)
This book is perfect for spooky season! It's deeply atmospheric, dark, spooky, tense, and suspenseful! Even the slower moments had an underlying tension and darkness to them! I loved the creepy library, and the ever curious Rue so much!
I'm typically pretty skeptical of most romances in books lately. I feel like most of them rely too heavily on readers filling in the gaps with tropes and "but the love interest is HOT," but I was really pleased with this one to find that it felt like the romance progressed naturally and there was a deep emotional bond there that raised the emotional stakes a lot especially at the end!
I REALLY liked the characters and found them to be well developed and well written!
Overall I really liked this book and I'm excited for it to come out THIS WEEK! If you're reading this before it comes out, go preorder it!

Content warnings for fantasy violence, some gore, and elements of horror. References to a violent attack in the past of a side character. There are two open door sex scenes. One at the beginning and one at the end. If you're uncomfortable with reading sex scenes, they're each about ~8 pages? or so? Easily skippable if desired! I don't feel like I missed anything!

The very minute I saw that C.M. Aragon was inspired by movies like The Mummy (cinematic masterpiece, I will not argue), I just KNEW I was going to love this book. Rue is one of my favorite characters she very much embodied the vibes of Evie from The Mummy. Her intelligence combined with curiosity and clumsiness was spot on. I have the softest spot in my heart for the found family trope and felt comforted by Rue's found family. Also can we just talk about annoyances to lovers? This trope will forever make me kick my feet with glee. I am married to a VERY annoying man, but I love him so much. So every time characters start out this way I am like "look that's us" to my husband lol. The Call of Chaos is a debut novel and I swear for me it didn't feel like a debut, it was so good. I need book two tomorrow (I am joking I have patience and know books take time, but pretty please?) This book made me laugh and cry and that doesn't happen very often so if you like books with curious clumsy librarians who accidentally unleash a chain of events, you should read this book.

Actual Score - 3.5⭐

I was provided with an ARC for this review and thank you so much to the author for the chance!

This book had so many elements and tropes I love that I was SO EXCITED to get a copy of it! Read it in a matter of days and the best thing this book has going for it is definitely the author's ability to establish a setting and atmosphere in only a few sentences. Every locale and building in the setting of Penrith felt richly mapped out in my mind while reading and I had an immediate sense of, for lack of a better word, the vibes with usually only 2-4 sentences of description. Everything felt fleshed out and had a rich setting and rarely have I seen an author do that while also being somewhat concise, let alone an indie author in their debut novel! They also had very unique descriptions and metaphors. Similar things we see described on the page all the time (e.g. a dreary day, a sunrise, a menacing noise or sensation) were penned in a way that felt not only different from many other novels in the genre, but vibrant and refreshing. The plot is definitely intriguing and after that ending I will ABSOLUTELY need the next book in this series.

Where it lacks the other 1.5 stars comes from some of the plot and relationships feeling a little bit rushed to me. I almost wish this was split into two books and some more time was given earlier on to establish some history between the character's relationships to the world and each other in more of a "show don't tell" kind of way. Then once we find out a main plot point/explanation for our main character Rue's trajectory, it very quickly changes her relationship to other characters for reasons that make sense but I wish were given more time to develop. I would be more specific but then it would be a big spoiler.

I also KNOW the series is called The Lost Pantheon, so the reason for the gods' loss or disappearance clearly will be explained throughout the course of the series, but I still feel like that part of the world building needed A LITTLE more exploration in this book. It just seems like such a major world event for the whole of society to at one point have acknowledged a universal pantheon, then their disappearance without explanation? Surely there is likely a believed explanation and that could be what Rue or other characters show us in this book, and we can reveal later either the real reason or deeper history. But that didn't really happen. Also we had lots of moments where certain characters then saw flashbacks of certain gods, but the flashbacks had barely any depth or information and sometimes were skipped all together and were just a mention of the character experiencing them again. I think my want for some more established world building was just thrown into sharper relief considering how well the author was able to establish a setting/mood/atmosphere and it highlighted the lack even more. Although, it is a debut novel from a new author so that is something I am hoping to see honed over the course of the series and am excited to see. There were also various typos or grammatical errors, but that is par for the course for ARCs as they are not yet the fully polished and final copy at times.

Overall I think this is a solid debut and a very promising start to a series despite room to grow.

Not every person who looks at you with care and heat would treat you right.

This dark fantasy was a quick and well written story with worldbuilding and lore so immersive, you could taste it. You could practically feel as if you were going through the events with the main characters. Especially some, very, ehem, explicit scenes. There’s still much to discover throughout the series about the events of the past, and we’re here for the ride.

The plot went from librarian falls for her boss to “you just opened Pandora’s Box and now all hell has broken loose”, though not literally Pandora’s box. It was a really easy to follow plotline with some twists that keep you hanging on to every word (it helps that the author’s imagery was beautiful).

Rue is witty as she is clever. She has the power of knowledge on her side, but she also knows there’s so much more to learn. She’s very understanding towards certain circumstances and she’s very loyal to those she cares about. She ventures into the unknown with her head high.

The romance got me feeling something. It was also quick with a lot of steam and tension, but there were some parts that I wished were addressed more. Though that’s just probably me.

Rue Umberwick has the job she has always dreamt of as the personal librarian to Ryker Ashworth. Ryker the devilishly handsome young duke has taken Rue under his wing giving her the opportunity to explore his vast library and quench her thirst for knowledge.
Rue’s life seems to be perfect, that is until her brother, Jasper, emerges stating that she must steal a book hidden in Ryker’s library. This book is said to bring about the Cataclysm if in the wrong hands. Rue must decide if the stories she was told as a child are true or merely fictional. If they are true she must do something with this book before it finds itself in the hands of evil. But who can she trust- the elusive Ryker, or her newly befriended winged accomplice, Corvus?
This book is brimming with magic, betrayal, ethereal beings, lust, and vengeance, sure to pull anyone out of their reading slump. Its fast pace, captivating world-building, and characters that draw you in make it hard to put down. Aragon adds the right amount of spice that will make you fall in love with the characters even more. I cannot wait for the next installment.

If you’re looking for a book with spooky themes, hawt sadistic (and fluffy) characters, a plus sized FMC, and some cozy vibes to top it all off, then you NEED to read this book (also, look at the cover—it's gorg)!

Rue enraptured me from the first chapter—her love for trinkets, tea (I drank a lot of it while reading to channel her), libraries, and her brother are all things I can relate to as a reader. Aragon did a wonderful job creating a cast that was both friendly and mysterious. Each person that was introduced into the story was unique and fun. Whether they were up to no good—which is likely here—or providing much needed comedic relief between the horrors that Rue experienced lol.

Speaking of which, the horror themes within this novel were also really well done, the descriptions making my face scrunch as I checked over my shoulder for something creeping in the shadows. *shivers* Let’s just say, taking a bath alone won’t be the same anymore for me.

AND THE ENDING!! I’M—

C.M. Aragon already knows my thoughts🤣🤣

Anyway, please please please go and read this book, you won’t regret it!

The Call of Chaos is an atmospheric, gothic horror fantasy that is absolutely perfect for an October read! I really loved the world brought to life in this book. I always love a creepy little mansion with hidden passages and grand libraries, but I really enjoyed the descriptions of the isle as a whole as well.

I also enjoyed the characters themselves. Rue is a fierce, intelligent, and independent woman, and I liked her a lot. Some choices she made had me wanting to give her just a tiny little smack, but overall, she’s a great character. Corvus is still a bit mysterious by the end of the book, which is totally fine since it’s meant to be a series, and I look forward to learning more about him in the next one! I hope we also get more of the side characters in the next book, particularly Jasper and Fia. I think both of those character have a lot of potential to go on some really fun adventures.

I do wish the romance was just a little bit slower of a burn. I wanted a little more tension before the payoff, you know? But I do like the dynamic between Rue and Corvus.

Disclaimer that I did receive a proof copy in a giveaway, but all opinions are of course my own.

This was such a fun read with all of the gothic, library, and magical vibes! The plot and history are really intriguing, which has me looking forward to unraveling more of the mystery. Plus, we have both bookish and winged men in vests.🤌🏼 My favorite thing about this book was that I was totally thrown for a love interest loop. I was so skeptical at first and did not realize where Rue's love story was headed, but I was very happy with how it turned out! It was fun having a prominent sibling relationship as well. I love all of the characters and would definitely enjoy seeing their relationships developed more.
Now, with the way things ended, I'm going to need the next book and some answers!

I also just have to note some of my favorite cute things from the book, like knuckle kisses, "I want to have you for dinner", and the fact that our girl Rue sure knows how to sleep and can do it just about anywhere anytime. 🤣

I'll just be over here impatiently looking forward to the next one!

Thank you so much to the author for the beautiful gifted copy!

*A Gripping Descent into Madness*

"The Call of Chaos" by C.M. Aragon is a haunting and thought-provoking novel that delves into the darkest recesses of the human psyche. With masterful storytelling, Aragon weaves a complex narrative that blurs the lines between reality and madness.

The characters are expertly crafted, with the protagonist's downward spiral into chaos both captivating and unsettling. Aragon's writing is evocative and atmospheric, conjuring an eerie sense of foreboding that lingers long after the final page.

This book is not for the faint of heart; it's a raw, unflinching exploration of the human condition. Aragon tackles themes of mental health, trauma, and the fragility of sanity with unflinching honesty.

A must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and dark fiction, "The Call of Chaos" will leave you breathless and disturbed. Be prepared to confront the darkness within.

Full of vivid imagery, unforgettable characters, and a deliciously dark atmosphere, this is one book horror and dark fantasy lovers alike won't want to miss. I spent my weekend wrapped up in Rue's world, and I admit that after I reached the end, I was dying for book two. It's clear Aragon put a lot of effort into the world-building, and I'd love to get to explore more of it! The scenes just envelop you, and it's easy to forget that you're actually curled up with a book and your favorite cup of tea. Things do move along at a fairly quick pace once it gets its hooks into you, making it even harder to set down. My favorite part was watching how the characters changed, themselves, and their relationships with each other. Overall, an engaging read with dynamic characters, and an amazing world. Definitely recommend for a Halloween read!

It’s such a fun read that is perfect for Halloween time! 🧙‍♀️🧛🎃👻 I love Rue and I think it is truly amazing that she is a librarian and loves books. I did feel however that some of the relationships were a little on the rushed side. To be honest I wish this was split into two books because I wanted that to be developed more. I know this book is a series so perhaps there will be some more deep diving in the next one. That ending though had me in shock! 🙀 I want the next book in the series now. 📚✨ The Call of Chaos

What do you get when you mix a curious librarian, a brooding duke, and a winged grump who doesn’t know how to mind his business? Chaossss gothic chaos.

Rue thought her job organizing the Duke of Penrith’s definitely cursed library was a dream come true…until she realized one of those books might end the world. No pressure, right? With the snarky Corvus as her unlikely (and winged) ally, Rue must hunt down the dangerous book while dodging secrets, curses, and her growing feelings for her mysterious employer.

Tropes we’re loving:
🔖 Grumpy/Sunshine Duo
📖 Forbidden Knowledge
🖤 Dark, Broody Duke Vibes

This book is like cozy horror with a gothic flair creepy but weirdly comforting. Perfect for fans of dark academia with a side of smolder. Just make sure you don’t read it in the dark… unless you want to hear the call of chaos yourself. 😉

The Call of Chaos pulls you in with raw emotion, dark tension, and characters that feel deeply human. C.M. Aragon creates a world where chaos isn’t just an external force… it’s something the characters carry within themselves. The story balances intensity and vulnerability beautifully, making every choice feel heavy and every consequence earned.

What stood out most was the emotional depth. The characters are flawed, complex, and constantly walking the line between survival and surrender. The writing is immersive and atmospheric, with moments that linger long after you turn the last page. It’s the kind of book that makes you pause, reflect, and feel… sometimes uncomfortably so, but in the best way.

If you enjoy stories that explore darkness, inner conflict, and the power of choice, The Call of Chaos is absolutely worth the read!!!!

Overall I really enjoyed the premise of this story. It took awhile to get started, but it is a fantasy, so world building and all that. I'm just impatient 😅 but once it picked up I could not put it down!

I really enjoyed all of the characters and themes in this book. Especially Rue, she was a very easy to root for FMC. And of course I cannot forget our "broody bird" Corvus. 🥲 All of the side characters I liked as well, like Sabrien and Oliver, and Jasper and Fia 🥲

I didn't realize at first that this would be a part of a series until I got to the end and NEEDED more content 😂 so I will be (not so) patiently waiting for the second book, to see where all of the characters end up!

This was a great Romantasty that was perfect for the start but of Spooky Season. I have been looking for something to transport me to a new, different, exciting, and imaginative world and C.M. Aragon did just that. With a great blend of scary and hot romance, this story just flowed and drew me in. I do wish there would have been a little more exploration of the world itself, but this is the first in a series so this may be intentional and this is a hook to draw me deeper in. If so, it did work.

Fair warning, this is a dark book and it does cover some disturbing topics and and there is gore and on page open door bedroom scenes. Please check the CWs before you read.

The Call of Chaos had me hooked from the beginning! I found that even when I was at the end, I was just foaming for more! The female main character is adorable and very relatable, and I'm quite curious to see how the new relationship... Spicy companionship goes with bird man, especially considering his past. Really fun world building and environment. Truly want to see more of the alchemist and her sister!! A decent amount of heat, but certainly more plot driven. I enjoyed this very much! The characters already have my heart, especially Rue! I don't think I've ever felt so represented in a fantasy novel; we love a curvy queen of knowledge!

There was a wonderful balance of plot, worldbuilding, character development, and various themes throughout that I believe anyone could vibe with.

This book has the grungy Victorian vibes of Edgar Alan Poe mixed with a fantasy plot reminiscent of greek mythology tales.

I loved the romance (swoon-worthy MMC), I loved the banter, and I loved the "raven-boys" 🥰

I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series for all the reasons listed above in addition to NOT being ready for that ending!!

I got sucked in right for the start. The plot was very captivating, and the authors world building was fantastic.

I loved Rue. She was clever, loyal, and had a wonderful understanding.
To be honest, all the characters were fantastic, I specially Loved Jasper aswell, he also was fantastic. I connected with alot of them instantly.

The story was fast-paced. It was like all of a sudden something went boom, and everything went sideways from there. And i loved every page.
