Raoul Wallenberg: A Life from Beginning to End

Raoul Wallenberg lived at a time when one of the worst outrages of inhumanity was occurring—the Holocaust. As a Swedish businessman in Hungary, he bore witness to this tragedy firsthand as Hungarian Jews were being shipped off to Auschwitz.

Raoul Wallenberg wasn’t a soldier, and he didn’t have armies he could fall back on to blast the Nazis to smithereens, but he did have important connections in the diplomatic circles of Sweden. He used these connections to provide passports and other documentation that would allow the Jews of Hungary to travel out of the country and on to freedom. He also orchestrated a wide array of other services—including shelter, food, and medical care—and his combined efforts are said to have saved tens of thousands of people.

Wallenberg’s story, however, took a tragic turn when he was captured by the Soviet Red Army and disappeared into Stalin’s Gulag, his fate becoming one of the Cold War’s most enduring mysteries. This is his life—this is his story.

A fascinating reading about a real freedom fighter. As a Swede I of course heard of him and what he did, but it was when I spoke with some Hungarians that I realized that he was not only known in Sweden. So therefore I decided to read this book. He was a true genius when it came to ways of saving other people.

A very brave man. He is known for saving almost 100,000 Jews from the Germans. Even though he was from Sweden nationalist, the Soviets mistakenly thought he was a spy and imprisoned him for the rest of his life. How little the

Russians have changed little over the years

A wonderful short read perfect for Yom Hashoah. While I certainly knew about Wallenberg before this book, this short read describes more about his background, and his willingness to put himself and his resources into solving the problems of antisemitism. Would there have been more like him then and now!

interesting and mysterious

Raul Wallenberg is lesser known than Schindler but still his efforts to save Jews during WWII is no less admirable. The mystery of his final years adds even more to his legend.

Captivating read

Excellent coverage of the heroic efforts of Rail Wall embers to rescue thousands of innocents from Nazi hatred of the Jews. Relevant to today's cyclical recurrence of anti-semiticism. Thought provoking

I knew the name but not the story. This is where Hourly History shines. Concise, interestingly written accounts of people, places and/or events that matter. Raoul's story does not have a happy fairy-tale ending. What it has is a powerful message of doing what you can regardless of the outcome.

A story short on detail

I was most interested on understanding your Wallenburg achieved the salvation of so many Jews, this book did not reveal that information.

This was a very basic biography of Raoul Wallenberg who saved thousands of Jews in Hungary during World War 2 and went mysteriously missing whilst he was under arrest in Russia.
