The quest to transcend human limitations through cutting-edge technologies.
Who wants to live forever?
FBI Special Agent Zack Wilder, a man with a dark past and a dangerous secret, is about to find out.
When an attempted assassination and forced medical leave coincide with a request to help find his ex-wife’s missing sister, Zack heads to San Francisco. He soon discovers Chloe is not the only person missing—numerous homeless people have taken part in drug trials and never been seen again.
The trail leads to the Athanasia Foundation, a powerful group of scientists and wealthy elites obsessed with cheating death and unconcerned about the collateral damage. Zack must navigate a labyrinth of unscrupulous experiments that span the globe and threaten the very fabric of genetic modification, cryogenics, consciousness uploading… The more he digs, the darker the secrets he unveils, and the more bodies he uncovers.
Now someone is getting desperate. Zack has no interest in living forever but it’s a race against time to see who dies first—and he’s determined it won’t be him.
After a number of years wandering the world in search of adventure, N.J. Croft finally settled on a farm in the mountains and now lives off-grid, growing almonds, drinking cold beer, taking in stray dogs, and writing stories where the stakes are huge and absolutely anything can happen.
First and foremost, a large thank you to N.J. Croft for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Always eager to get my hands on a book by N.J. Croft, I gladly accepted this ARC from the author. Croft has been working on the Zack Wilder series for a while, creating a strong protagonist while sending the FBI agent in search of many things, all related to some controversial scientific project. In this piece, while chasing down a missing person, Wilder discovers a laboratory working towards the goals of transhumanism, tapping into eternal life through technology and human fine-tuning. What Wilder discovers is less enlightening and more akin to lab experiments on the underprivileged, leaving a pile of bodies in its wake. A chilling story that pushes the series forward quite effectively.
FBI Special Agent Zack Wilder knows he is being followed and has a pretty good idea why. However, when he is almost killed, he’s put on medical leave and left to watch paint dry. He takes a call from his ex-wife, who is worried about her sister, missing in California. With little to do and wanting to keep himself occupied, Special Agent Wilder makes his way to San Francisco.
When he arrives, Special Agent Wilder learns that Chloe is not the only one missing. It appears other homeless people have disappeared off the streets for reasons no one can fully understand. When Special gent Wilder digs a little deeper, he learn about some new drug trials that have started, targeting the homeless as a quick way to make some cash. Could Chloe have become involved in something like this?
As Special Agent Wilder makes his presence known in San Francisco, he encounters another member of the Fulcrum, the group that raised him from childhood. They work on trying to crack things open, which brings them to the Athanasia Foundation, a collective of scientists and wealthy members of society who are trying to cheat death and tap into transhumanism, clearing the pathway to eternal life through cryogenics, genetic mapping, and many other breakthroughs. As Special Agent Wilder tries to infiltrate the group to get answers, he comes upon Chloe, who has changed significantly.
While Special Agent Zack Wilder has no interest in eternal life, he wants to live long enough to bring these people down, with or without the help of the FBI and the Fulcrum. He will have to be slick and stay one step ahead of these scientists and their power hungry elitists, who have secrets for a reason. Croft delves deeply into the science and packs a punch with all the thrills throughout this piece.
N.J. Croft has always appealed to me with her strong themes and scientific exploration, wrapping them all up into something the thriller reader would thoroughly enjoy. The narrative flows well and while there are many scientific and complex issues on offer, it is presented in such a way that the layperson would not struggle As the story gains momentum, there are many moments for the plot to develop and characters to add their own flavouring. While there is little Zack WIlder backstory to be had, Croft is able to present a thing or two to keep the curious reader. wondering, while adding a handful of secondary characters to add depth to an already strong story. I like where this series is headed and Zack Wilder is certainly someone to watch!
Plot points in these sorts of novels require a great deal of attention. While the scientific events are usually quite astounding, there are elements of surprise that can pull the reader in deeper. Croft knows just how to do that, pitting advancement with surprise in equal measure. The stories keep getting better as the underlying themes remain strong and on point. I am eager to see where the series is headed and how Croft will get it there.
Kudos, Madam Croft, for piquing my interest with ease.
In another absolutely unputdownable thriller from N.J. Croft we find Zack Wilder, our enigmatic hero, drawn into an off-the-books investigation of the Athanasia Foundation. This extremely well-funded and very powerful corporation is fervently devoted to the concept of transhumanism, the advancement and improvement of the human condition through the use of cutting-edge technologies with the goal of drawing immortality and enhanced intellect out of the realm of science fiction and into a viable reality. Their work involves unconventional research into cryogenics, cybernetics, neural implants and who knows what else. When the sister of Zack’s ex-wife disappears without a trace, Zack finds himself thrust into the middle of something far more sinister and complex than a simple missing persons case. This is not an easy case for Zack, it is personal, and he has no idea just how dangerous it is about to become. Believing that the Fulcrum organization can provide him with far better resources, Zack tries to keep his FBI colleagues out of the investigation but fate has other plans. As the danger escalates, it soon becomes appallingly evident that even the mighty Fulcrum cannot protect Zack from the zealots at Athanasia. While every addition to this series incorporates contemporary issues, strong characters, loads of action and enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat flipping pages well into the night, this story takes all of that up to another level and ultimately results in some unexpected and permanent changes for Zack and those he is close to. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a captivating well-written adventure that will leave you contemplating the boundary between fact and fiction.
I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.
4.5stars-TRANSHUMAN is the fourth instalment in NJ Croft’s contemporary, adult ZACK WILDER THRILLER: THE FULCRUM suspense, sci-fi thriller focusing on thirty-four year old, former US Army Ranger turned FBI Special Agent Zack Wilder.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise including graphic violence and death, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
SOME BACKGROUND: The Fulcrum is a ‘clandestine’ organization that has remained hidden from society for hundreds of years, an organization that hopes to maintain order in a world precariously balancing between chaos and harmony.
WHAT IS TRANSHUMAN: According to the Oxford dictionary the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology.
Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including FBI Agent Zack Wilder TRANSHUMAN follows in the wake of Zack Wilder’s leave of absence from the FBI. Always a bit of a rogue agent, Zack finds himself suspended, for the lack of a better term, but when his ex-wife calls saying her younger sister has gone missing, Zack knows his time off will be spent hunting for the people involved. Zack’s investigation begins to spiral when our hero discovers several missing homeless people may have unwittingly become part of a group whose lives have been forfeited in the name of immortality, and Zack may be the next victim on the list. Always acting on his own, without the permission of the those in charge, Zack focuses on the reality of what is happening, and why danger is present at every turn. Not only has Zack disobeyed the his superiors at the FBI but the Fulcrum Organization is none too pleased with our story line hero.
The secondary and supporting characters are interesting and charismatic. We are reintroduced to Zack’s ex-wife Sarah, and his former FBI Partner Special Agent Kelsey Taylor; Zack’s handler at Fulcrum Lazarus, Fulcrum agent Kienan Reynolds, as well as Zack’s brother Senator Peter MacNally. The requisite evil has many faces.
TRANSHUMAN is a story of power, money and control; of life and death; of immortality and sustainability; of betrayal and vengeance; of cryogenics, cybernetics, science and more. The premise is detailed, complex and intriguing; the characters are determined, desperate, dangerous and powerful.
Transhumanism is a particularly bizarre field of science if you can even categorize it as that. There are as many groups chasing immortality and superhuman characteristics as there are bacteria in a petri dish.
Author N. J. Croft captures a compelling motivation for Transhumanism in her novel Transhuman: A Zack Wilder Thriller (The Fulcrum).
FBI Agent Zack Wilder is lesser known as a member of the ultra-secret organization, The Fulcrum. Recruited, or rather fostered into the organization by his parents when he was four years old, Zack has been fully trained in all of the killing arts.
Unfortunately for Zack, he has never had much luck with the women in his life as evidenced by his divorce and the second wife he has just had to kill. Coming into headquarters with a dead wife and a seven-inch slash across his side makes his boss shake his head at him.
Zack is labeled as a danger magnet and ordered to take a vacation, much to his dismay. On his half-hearted ramble to find relaxation, Zach ends up at the house of his ex-wife Sarah and the proverbial excrement hits the fan.
N. J. Croft throws us into the world of Transhumanism. We are shocked by homeless people tricked into unorthodox medical procedures, horrified by deadly cryogenics performed upon live people, petrified by invasive neural implants to virtually control a human being, and discover a multi-million dollar business operating in the open.
The thrill ride of the century is on as Zach Wilder tries to track down his missing daughter-in-law, almost gets caught in the claws of The Health and Wellness Mission, and tries to evade the nefarious 'doctors' and 'scientists' who are preying upon the weak people in society.
Woven into the plot is the crusade of The Fulcrum and the mysterious power plays going on behind the scenes while Zach is on 'vacation.' His long-lost brother, Peter, who is a Senator on track to be the next President of the United States, pops in and out of the story in time to offer help.
However, the ending is truly the masterpiece of the book. Events are decided in ways you would never expect. And it wouldn't be a great thriller if it didn't leave several plotlines hanging, hopefully, to be addressed in the next book in the series. An A+ read.
Experiments on living people bring death and unexpected attention - 5 stars
An FBI agent with a knack for getting into trouble, Zack Wilder senses trouble when he is being followed. And Zack has a history of being followed by people who intend to kill him. While Zack is working as an FBI agent in their New York City office, he is also a member of a secret organization called the Fulcrum. The Fulcrum is a non-governmental body intent on making the world safe.
After a fight with two assassins, Zack has to recover from a knife wound and is ordered to take a vacation. Zack has never taken a vacation. He doesn't know how to relax. Zack's ex-wife in California has sent an "I need help" message. Zack arrives only to find that his ex-wife's sister has disappeared. It is only natural that Zack, having been given mandatory time off for his stiches to heal, jumps in to save the day.
An out-of-control medical experiment gets Zack's attention. A high-tech medical company is trying to offer a procedure to cryogenically store and eventually restore people when the technology is reliable has been using living people as their guinea pigs. So far, every attempt to bring a once-living person back to life has been an abject failure. Both the law and medical ethics ban the notion of experimenting using live people.
One example of Zack's dry humor was when he was challenged about walking away from the scene of an incident involving gunfire, he replied, "Actually, there may have been a little running involved" before the authorities arrived.
Zack constantly demonstrated that he wanted to be in the midst of trouble; he easily found trouble. Even a full-time bodyguard had trouble keeping Zack out of harm's way. This thriller has full-throttle excitement, ruthless medical practitioners, and an excellent support team trying to root out evil, doing so without alarming the public. Set aside time to read this book. Transhuman is a winner!
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with Zack heading to the office when he feels someone is following him. After cleaning up, he goes to see his boss to find out the status of his request for a new partner. Kelsey as a partner puts her in too much danger. Later, Zack meets his new partner and as they are heading to court, Zack once more gets the feeling of being followed. Sending his new partner on an errand, Zach attempts to draw the follower in. When the two meet, Zack has to fight for his life. Zack wants to learn who is after him, but before he can find out, his partner has shot the assailant. Zack has received a knife wound and taken to the hospital. As a result, Zack is placed on medical leave.
The next day Zack returns a call to his ex-wife Sarah tells him that her sister Chloe is missing. Since Zack was on leave, he travels to Calif. to help with the search. Once Zack has followed up with Chloe's activities, he discovers a project that she was working on and that brings him to following up by enrolling in a drug trial. As a result of his acceptance, Zack learns info about Chloe. While doing it, he has to make an escape. Zack now puts his efforts in following the leads that he got with assistance from Fulcrum.
As Zack continues with his investigation, Kelsey winds up following him to Calif. Things then get worse before he is done.
To learn what the significance of the drug trial was, why Chloe went missing, how Fulcrum came into play and how everything worked out in the end, then you need to read this book. It is well worth your time.
Zack Wilder, FBI Secret Agent, is fuming after being forced to take medical leave for an abdominal wound that narrowly missed eviscerating him. Zack hates being sidelined and makes no secret of his displeasure.
His absorption in self pity is interrupted by a call from his ex-wife, Sarah, who is asking him to help her. Her college aged sister, Chloe, has disappeared and the preliminary search has done nothing to shed any light on her disappearance. Zack travels to her home in San Francisco to investigate and uncovers a high dollar, scientific experimental organization with questionable ethics.
NJ Croft's stories are very well written and her character development superb. Croft sets a scene so well that the reader is not aware of it being set, it simply flows as being in the natural order of things.
If you are looking for darn good mystery that leads you to speculating until the last page, look no farther. I highly recommend this story.
Having read all other previous books from the author, i was honoured to be given the opportunity to to be sent this in exchange for an honest review.! I also was looking forward to see how Zac Widler's escapades continued. N.J. Croft writes about very plausible scenarios and this is no different albeit a scary thought process. Zac is forced to take some time away from work (FBI) when his ex-wife calls to say her sister is missing - a simple case of lost and found for Zac.........not a chance! He gets caught up in the web of an extremely well-funded and very powerful corporation that is fervently devoted to the concept of transhumanism and will stop at nothing to enhance the human condition and longevity of life. Join Zac as he tries to find his ex sister in law and unravel the conspiracies surrounding cutting edge pharmaceutical ambitions of extremely wealthy and powerful people on a quest to "live forever". I thoroughly recommend this book and all the previous to anyone who has an inquisitive mind and loves a good thriller
I enjoyed the book overall but the language made it very hard to give it all 5 stars. While there were places in the book where it made sense, there were many others where other words work just as well. As far as the story, tracking down what really was happening versus what appeared to have happened was what kept me reading to the end. A character that goes beyond the pain he is in to complete the task of uncovering the evil being done in the name of progress was a great idea.
maybe lightning strikes faster than this story travels, but only maybe. all driven by one driven man, Zack Wilder, who seems to be fearless and evidently is still evolving. his acquaintances will be happy to know that. what makes this reader happy right now is that I have two.more n.c. books cued up in my kindle library perfectly poised to become the next thrillers I read. hopefully, at a more human(e) speed.
Taking the Zach Wilder series to another level, Transhuman stretches the future of the human race, with its worse traits as well.
Greed and self-fulfillment at any cost follows the pursuit of missing persons that disappeared after being pulled into experiments for longevity. And it’s personal as one who has disappeared is a relative of Zach’s ex-wife.
Was pleased to receive this book as an ARC member. It's a totally absorbing well written read. The story line draws you in from the very beginning and keeps your interest to the very end. The characters are tailed made for the story and add to the twists and turns that keep your interest. All in all a worthy novel that I would have no Problems in highly recommending
What a story, perhaps some people wish to live forever. Definitely has to be a price to pay for this privilege. Once again, Zack Wilder is a part of all the happenings. Another story that I couldn’t put down.
