Cartel Kings #3

Trapped: His Possessive Cellmate

Rate this book
He's dangerous, dominant, and willing to protect me...for a price.

Imprisoned for a crime I didn't commit, the only thing between me and the murderers in here is the criminal in my cell. I have no choice but to do as he says. When he says, "Bark," I bark. That's what I am to him now.

But it's an act, just a ruse to get the other prisoners to leave me alone. So long as I 'belong' to him, I'm safe. He can keep me safe. If only I can trust him.

Except the lines are blurring, and I can't stop fantasizing about what it would be like if it was true. If I was really his property. His plaything. If I did all the things for him I only pretend I do.

In this cell after dark, no one else needs to know what really happens.

TRAPPED brings together a boy in need of a protector and a possessive convict in a high heat, dark MM crime romance with a HEA and no cliffhanger. This novel is #3 in the Cartel Kings Series, but can be read as a standalone.

Tropes: forced proximity, prison cellmates, opposites attract
Feels: 3.5/5
Steam*: 3.5/5
Kinks: slightly dubcon, one scene that starts as somnophilia, mild Dom/sub, marking
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: murder, violence, crime, physical assault, threats of SA but no SA

Milo is a rich young man, gay. He is a meek character. His dad did some white collar crimes in his business, and he makes Milo take the fall for it. Milo gets sentenced to 5 years in prison. In prison, he meets his cellmate Angelo Torres who is a cartel remember doing time. Angelo is supposed to get out in 2 months. Milo is small, a little effeminate looking, and clearly weaker than other men around him. He's a sitting duck for someone to make him his b****.

Angelo quickly starts feeling strangely protective of Milo. He decides to claim him as his b****, but at first it's platonic, he makes Milo do chores and he only makes a show of his public claim to keep other people away from Milo. But as time passes he quickly realizes that Milo is attracted to him and he sees the appeal in Milo. Their relationship turn sexual. You'd think based on this being a dark romance that Angelo would be using Milo more and that they're dynamic would be more on the toxic side. But from the beginning, it's actually pretty light as far as dark romances go. Angelo always treats Milo so well even if he talks dirty. And Angelo is not sexually selfish, their sexual relationship actually starts with Angelo touching Milo without expecting anything in return. Angelo gets obsessed with Milo, with how submissive he is and the affection that Milo clearly feels for him. Angelo just sinks in to the feeling and wants more.

Angelo has to do some messy things to keep himself and Milo safe in prison. And with their different release dates coming up there's some tension about whether they would be together outside of prison. They have a nice enough happily ever after.

I liked this book. It was a nice light short read with some good steam. I love a possessive and obsessive relationship. I like reluctant feelings sneaking in and tenderness creeping in to the sexual relationship the way that it did in this book. The one thing that I would have liked more would have been if at the end, Milo had managed to stand up to his father and save himself. It would have been a nice character arc and shown development if Milo had learned some street smarts and skills and been able to get himself out of the pickle he was in on his own. I wasn't a huge fan of Milo still being weak and needing to be saved from his metaphorical glass tower. A feisty Milo would have been nice to see. There were also a few typos.

Some notable moments:

Tee hee. Angelo definitely wasn't just pretending. "“I know he’s just pretending to bend you over at night so he’s got an excuse to take care of you. But you have to make sure people believe it. So just do whatever he tells you, okay?” Milo shivered. Just pretending. Was that what was happening? Or was that just what Torres had told Rafael? It didn’t feel like pretending. Torres’s fingers around his balls had felt pretty real."

"But Angelo didn’t care. Let them gossip. All he cared about was Milo, and the way Milo melted so sweetly under his hands. The way Milo looked at him, equal parts terrified and worshipful. Like Angelo was his entire world. Mine, Angelo thought fiercely as he watched Milo across the yard. All mine."

"Slowly, they came down from the peak. Angelo leaned his brow against Milo’s, his breath rough and heavy. “I’ll never let you go,” he said harshly. Milo closed his eyes, feeling the words seep through him like warm honey. Yes, he thought. This. I’ll keep it forever."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Thank you Ace for letting me know this was safe to read. 💗

I actually loved this. With a story like this I was fully expecting sex to happen immediately but was pleasantly surprised at the slowish build up to it.

There’s not a lot of depth and their love definitely developed from a trauma bond (more so in Milo’s case ) but I’ll take it. I love codependency in all forms especially when the dom becomes tender and wants to cherish the sub.

I loved seeing Angelo’s progression towards Milo and especially liked their last night in prison together.

The plot was kinda flimsy so I didn’t think too hard on it, tho I was left curious as to how their HEA would actually work with Angelo working in the cartel, I had actually assumed the ending was going to go a completely different way than it did but I still liked it, the epilogue was good enough with them being nicely settled together. 🥰

If you me you’ll know that I hate when MCs are with others in the story.. . While that wasn’t the case here, Angelo is straight and has pretty descriptive horny thoughts about his lawyer ( which I didn’t really like) BUT I did like how it was circled back, with his next meeting with her, he was trying to bring back those lusty thoughts but it wasn’t doing anything for him because Milo had already started to occupy his mind 🥰

Overall, it was an easy read that left me craving a prison guard x inmate from this author 😂

So I’ve decided to explore new terrains in fiction and self-published books. What started as mere curiosity about queer retellings of classic fairy tales slowly became a vertiginous path into the Dark Romance genre, horror tinged erotica and hardcore fanfiction (more on that in future reviews maybe?). I was dazzled by the amount of creative freedom in those stories and, much like when I found out about extreme horror literature, I had to learn more. That’s what brought me to Trapped: His Possessive Cellmate (M/M Dark Crime Romance - Cartel Kings Book 3), an intriguing title for sure… not the most extreme of the bunch, but a nice place to start.

In Trapped we follow the emotional and sexual journey of Milo Mueller, a pampered rich man framed by his family and locked in prison for crimes he didn’t commit, and Angelo Torres, a violent henchman for a well known Colombian cartel. They’re put in the same cell and forced to deal with their differences, Milo as an anxious gay man with boyish features and Angelo, an imperious straight guy built like a mountain, so there are a lot of social and behavioral differences between the two. At first their relationship is based on a pattern of BDSM dom/sub dynamics, but things start to change and slowly evolve while they face the obstacles of life in prison.

The plot is meandering and while there’s a lot of focus in the slow development of the couple’s relationship I missed the internal conflicts a straight man used to violence would have realizing his affection for a gay and rich man. I also missed the exploration of their cultural differences that were treated mostly on the surface level. Angelo would miss his life outside prison, but we never get the sense of who he really was before that, the same happens with Milo. In all aspects that do not pertain to their mutual relation the characters feel underdeveloped, often presenting repetitive thoughts and reaffirming previously established things. Which at first was quite displeasing and it made it hard for me to care about their journey.

But I am a romantic after all and soon enough I was enthralled by the blossoming of Milo and Angelo’s bond. If anything, I enjoyed the slow construction of their desire, the slow burn and sexual progression of their intimacy felt very real and endearing. I don’t really know when it happened, it was all very subtle, suddenly I was rooting for these shallow stereotypes of men, especially when things got cute and fluffy, after all the aggressiveness at the beginning (which was admittedly very steamy). What can I say, I’m a simple person, give me two reluctant queer characters slowly falling in love in a detrimental environment and I’ll be there for you and your flawed story. While active ignoring certain aspects of the text (the occasional incorrect use of Spanish, rushed plot resolutions and repetitive sentences), at the end I was completely taken by the unrealistic, and yet oddly satisfying turn of events, feeling all warm inside at various moments. And I believe this means something, I was briefly touched by art.

(Also, I really liked how Angelo's cartel gang was more thoughtful and caring than Milo's rich father and sister, that was a pretty nice touch, we all deserve a criminal boyfriend with a supportive family, don't let anyone tell you otherwise).

A lock up book which had me tense on every page while poor Milo was in prison. He is a sweet and fragile boy who is taking the fall for an unscrupulous millionaire father. Milo is basically dumped by everyone after he is jailed.
The prison scenes were extremely fraught and menacing for this young man. He is trying to survive his panic and terror at being in prison. Milo realizes that he must have protection and offers himself to his cellmate, a leader of the Latin prisoners. Angelo is big, menacing, and straight. He is bemused by Milo and soon finds that he likes the total emotional submission that Milo gives him.
There is no physical at first, but Angelo finds himself drawn to Milo. He is unkind to Milo, but does keep him protected. Whew! I was glad for that, even though Milo still gets knocked around. Very tough to read as Milo is so innocent and sweet.
Milo is gay and attracted to Angelo from the start. Their relationship building is well written in the many chapters set in prison. The story takes a turn when both Milo and Angelo are released from prison at different times.
Milo goes back to his luxe life, but something is different, and menacing. Angelo is welcomed back into the Colombian cartel, although there are no scenes of his actually being back within the group.
The thought was in my mind all throughout the book that Angelo is a cartel leader. This is like the last person on earth I would want as a romance MC. Since there was so very little cartel interaction in the book, maybe the author wanted to soft pedal it. How can a zero be a hero?
Angelo does fall hard for Milo and has a personality change in his feelings for the younger man. The physical scenes were steamy and stealthy in the prison setting.
The book stuttered in the post prison scenes. There is a HFN. I mean, is this a lifestyle that sustains a long and happy life together? It was a different type read. I recommend it for the intense prison scenes, all well written.

Hi.

Third book "Trapped: His Possessive Cellmate":

So i just finished the book, and let me tell you, thiss, is so far the best one in this series.

I loved everything about it, the characters were likeable, i loved both angelo and milo.

The books starts with milo (our submissive MC) on his merry way to the prison, getting basically violated by the guards (no surprise there) , getting catcalled by other prisoners, basically getting hoaxed into believing angelo is going to kill him and all of that stuff (just because he is assigned to be his Cellmate) and then, boom, they meet.

Angelo (our Dom MC) is quite fascinated by milo (in a bad way, like in a "look at this wimp, just standing there beimg pretty and twinky, dk if i want to beat him or eat him" way). He knows milo's going to get eaten alive without protection.

Later we learn the neo nazis from the prison (who call themselves aryans) try to recruit milo into their gang and he declines which results in him getting his ass handed to him and angelo being his guardian angel and saving him.

From there milo ask for angelo's protection in exchange of him being his bitch and angelo being the straight guy he is, accepts.

Anyway won't spoil anymore, but i loooooved the whole storyline, how their relationship progresses, how they communicate their feelings, how the latinos (from two different cartels) have each other's (and by extension, milo's) back, nurse Williams (the queen that she is), how natural angelo's possessivenes felt and how milo being pathetic didn't lessen him being loveable, and everything else.

The writing is perfect, very engaging and easy to read, the characters were great, even the villain, this one was surprisingly less abusive compared to the other two. It was the right amount of toxic, and my god, i love them, the last 3 chapters basically melted my heart.

So basically, yeah, 5/5.

P.S. 1: i genuinely giggled evertime angelo called milo putita, like be serious.

P.S. 2: i love angelo, i love milo, i love nurse williams, and my god rafael is hot.

P.S. 3: loved how angelo had that racist pos's ass handed to him, it was satisfying to read.

P.S. 4: i hate milo's family with passion.

P.S 5: idk anymore, i want to add a lot of things but don't want to spoil anything so read it yourself.

M/M Romance

Surprisingly, this was not a wham bam, thank you sir book.

Milo, a young man from wealth takes the fall for his father for a white collar crime. Though it's his first offense, he's sent to prison where he is extremely vulnerable and out of his depth.

He's put in a cell with a hardened cartel member Torres who basically ignores him. Knowing that he won't survive without protection, he begs his cellmate to protect him at any cost. His cellmate agrees and basically uses him as his housekeeper. Milo keeps waiting for Torres to want something from him and eventually Torres feels compelled to comply. Again, nothing immediately happens which I appreciated and found refreshing.

What happens when a business transaction begins to feel like more? Is what happens in prison just a phase or can these two unlikely people have something real, in the real World. Read it!

I read this book on a total whim and I’m really glad I did. I loved the characters, I loved the story. The spice was perfect 😍👌🏻

My problem is that I don’t feel like the first I love you moment was justified. I didn’t believe or feel like Milo was in love with Angelo at that point. All we had seen in their relationship was sex and desire to protect and be protected. There were no moments where I felt like their relationship in prison moved past what it was. I wish we got more secret soft moments between Milo and Angelo BEFORE Milo was released.

But I still really enjoyed their dynamic and the story!! They’re epilogue was the sweetest thing🥰

4.5 ⭐️ I LOVE ANGELO AND MILO 😭 OMG they are so cute together. Their prison life was not completely unbelievably, which was a good thing considering prison related books can be either underwhelming or over the top. I love Angelo’s tenderness, even at the beginning, when he was trying to dodge his own feelings and assert his dominance, he didn’t do anything against Milo’s wishes. And Milo, even if he was a bit “softer than necessary for prison life”, it wasn’t that bad. I actually LOVE his vulnerability and submissiveness. It was endearing and never overwhelming. And the end 🥹 argh the end 😭 so far this is the best book in the series, I loved Pappy Angelo since book 2 😍

Torres leaned back against the wall, crossing his muscular arms over his chest.
''So,'' Torres drawled, his deep voice sending a shiver down Milo's spine.
''Are you offering to be my bitch? You'll do whatever I ask, whenever I ask it?''

This book is for me lmaooo. I was drooling all through out. The sex and sexual tension are sky high with still a good plot.

Roomies or more

Forced proximity for sure. I don't over read books with the characters in prison but I enjoyed this.

It was nice to read a familiar characters story. Both characters are in an unsafe environment and yet their feelings start to grow despite that. In the end their time in the cell means more to them than they know.

Looking forward to the next book in the series

beautiful

Honestly this book was better than the previous books of the series. I feel like the author really takes criticism and applied it to where you can start to see in each book the characters and the story gets better.

This series is just . . . Wow. I couldn’t put this book down once I started. I am so in love with Angelo and Milo. Though they started out rocky, they are so sweet. Thank you for this series and these characters! I appreciate you!

Reads like a rough first draft.

Big and little inconsistencies, characters are just shallow versions of themselves and not fully fledged people, awkward writing, repetitions and telling not showing. Forced myself to finish it bout couldn't get into it.

So people say this is AI written. Its definitely written differently. Good pacing, good plot, but no depth. Just enough to the characters to keep it perfectly ok, but i never felt any love from Angelo and surprisingly not much from Milo either. But still much better than what so many people write.
