Kaaliz has been imprisoned by the Ministry and experimented on for ten years. Now Lucinda, a dying employee decides that freeing him in exchange for eternal life is a price worth paying. Now that he is free again, Kaaliz is determined to take revenge on the Ministry and unleash terror. Xavier and Claire have been living as humans again with their son Tom. They know that they are going to be targets and don't have the strength to protect their son so they may have to team up with former enemies to defeat the vampires.
I read this book by accident years ago, thinking it was a stand alone novel. When I realised my mistake I went on to finish it and then purchased the other parts of the trilogy. Thankfully, the only part I remembered was the escape at the start of the book, so I was able to read it again without spoilers. It was interesting to see what the characters from book one are doing ten years on and how they are drawn back into the fight, along with new characters to follow.
I felt sorry for Lucinda until she put her plan into action and becomes the vampire 'Sin'. Now she is as evil as Kaaliz, and with her knowledge of the Ministry and computer skills, she is even more dangerous in some ways than he is. She discovers secrets about an imprisoned deadly creature that they can perhaps use in their reign of terror and is happy to kill all of her former colleagues. Sin and Kaaliz together are a deadly team and it is going to take a team to stop them.
Lynda is about to get married and continue a normal life when her visions return and she knows she must go and help defeat the vampires. Chloe is back and despite selling the amulet, she is still determined to do her part in taking on the vampires. It was also fun to see the two Dave's for a bit of comedy relief. Those guys are silly but funny. Xavier and Claire no longer have their powers to protect their family but Xavier has his own plan on how he can take on Kaaliz...and Claire is not going to be happy about it.
We also meet the top vampire hunters at the Ministry-Bradley and Nicholl, who are both well trained and Rek, an ambitious trainee who has only been at the Ministry for a few months. In an amusing side story we also mean the vain wannabe rock star sex symbol Risk, whose inflated opinion of himself is at odds with the rest of his band. We're introduced to Tom, and it's clear that being the son of former vampires has left him with some kind of special powers. We also see his friends including Sarah and Hal. Vampire Elvis is also very funny.
There are several monsters to fight in this book which make Kaaliz and Sin look like a walk in the park. It's going to take the combined forces of good to take on these monsters and I liked the way the plot developed. There were moments when I wanted to scream in frustration at some of the characters especially a certain decision that Rek took-and you just know that is going to come back to bite him. I also would've thought Nicholl would've remembered what happened with Elvis and realise what Sin had stolen.
The story takes place mostly in Northern Ireland with a scene in England and one in Wales. It's nice to see proper horror set in the home nations without the worst steriotypes for characters. I liked the character development used for everyone-you pretty much care about all the good guys, and you enjoy the antics of the bad guys. I'm gutted about the end though! I enjoyed the book and now on to the final book to see how it all ends.
