🌶️🌶️

A Desolate Spring follows Billie as she enters into a world of magic and so much mystery. She has had unexplainable visions since she was 13 years old and eventually receives a mandatory invitation to join Highgate Castle Academy near her 21st birthday. Here she learns she was wrongly raised in the mortal world while she was meant to be living among the magical creatures and beings of the Isle. But, similarly to her life in the mortal world, darkness awaits her on the Isle of Aestus.

A Desolate Spring was right up my alley. I loved the dark academia vibe, and although this book does have some dark subject matter, this made the stakes feel so much higher. There is romance, intrigue, magic, and more. My favorite part is that it felt unpredictable, and it was! There are a lot of questions left unanswered in this book, but this leads me to believe that book 2 is going to be incredible. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

A Desolate Spring, Book 1 in The Isle of Aestus series by C. E. J. Greveson, is a book like no other. It is truly unique in its world-building, the plot, and the twists and turns. It leaves you with so many questions, and you know it has a strong hold on you. I will count the days until I have the sequel in my arms. I had a gut feeling telling me this would be the story for me, and I wasn't wrong.

All that Billie, the FMC, has ever wanted was a kernel of normality in her life. But that was never meant to happen because Billie holds a secret—she has the ability to peer into another's mind simply by touching them, leaving her exposed to everyone's deepest and darkest secrets. This leaves her utterly lonely, scared of touching people, forming any deeper connection, let alone love. Even with wanting to isolate herself, she cannot isolate her heart completely, and she offers tiny pieces of herself to a select few. Her emotional journey is one that will resonate with you, as you feel her pain and her longing for connection.

She is also coping with the death of her father, a broken relationship with her mother, and a revelation that will change everything. Her ability isn't a curse; it's magic, and her father is not who she thought he was. Now, she finds herself in his world, a world where she belongs, filled with magic and mystical creatures, but also filled with oppression, hatred, and on the brim of another war. Even here, Billie will fight hard to find and keep her place, to discern friends from foes, what is right and what is wrong, who she should trust and who she should love.

The mental health representation is done masterfully, digging deep into Billie's feelings and thoughts and giving us a story to love and cherish. The characters are not just characters, they are complex beings, crafted beautifully, showcasing their layers, their inner selves and their personal journeys. This depth and complexity will draw you in and keep you invested in their stories.

In a world brimming with magic and conflict, what will happen next?

A Desolate Spring will gift you
- a unique dark fantasy story
- intricate world-building
- mental health representation
- masterfully crafted characters
- political intrigue and oppression
- found family
- romance
- plots and twists,
and so much more!

***ARC review***

I received this as an advance reader copy.

This novel follows a 21 year old woman named Billie. She has a special gift that has no place in the mortal world, but she soon finds out that it has no place in realms of magic either. Tossed into a world on the brink of civil war, Billie faces impossible choices. Her father hid and hid her in the mortal world for years but it cost him everything. Is she due to meet the same fate if she follows in his footsteps? Her discovery and the unveiling of her magic has set big things in motion and soon she will have to choose. The Highers or the Rebels? Her comfortable, safe love in the mortal world or the burning, life altering one she is bound and determined to deny in her new magical one?

What I loved:
The world building. The first part of this book was tough for me but at about 35% I started to get over the “set the stage” hump and into “can’t put it down” territory. This author is very self aware and knows that parts of this book are slow. But I found them wholly necessary to appreciate the impacts of major plots. I loved that there are so many sub plots and that there is so much depth to this story. I have so many questions and that means I’ll be back for all remaining parts. Sometimes I found myself frustrated with how out of sorts Billie was but then I would remember all that’s happened to her in less than a year and found myself reconciling that this was excellent writing. The depiction of Billie’s inner monologue and how she’s literally just trying to make it through the day is **chef’s kiss** What a privilege it was to read this!

What I didn’t love:
Essentially zero questions are answered. The complexity of this book is incredible but you don’t get A N Y T H I N G to go on by the end. Normally you get a few things concluded and find some peace with some of the plot and then you have a cliffhanger. Every single plot and sub plot from this book is a cliffhanger. I’m especially upset at the state of things between Billie and Link. I have a pretty good hunch about where these two will end up (bc this ain’t my first rodeo) but there’s this little (big) sliver of doubt because of the offer Billie receives from Kai.

Also, don’t think I missed that little thought she had towards Link’s bestie at the end there.

Needless to say I can only virtually BEG this author to keep me in mind for the arc on her sequel. I won’t be able to rest until I can get my eyes on it!

Such a big storyline to fit into just one book! I think this could have done even better if it had been more fleshed out and spread across two books, as we jumped so fast through everything!

I love that Billie is whisked away to a magical Academy- though I feel we didn’t really get to witness much magic outside of her and her immediate circle! There’s so many ‘breeds’ introduced and I wanted to know more about all of them!

Stakes feel pretty high in this, with Billie being dragged into a war with two sides that both seem absolutely ruthless. The dark was dark-ing with some brutal deaths and attempted r***.

There was a love triangle (though I would have immediately jumped over to Lincoln tbh) and we follow Billie being torn between her childhood love and this new dark and brooding shifter, Lincoln.

Holden is a little ray of sunshine, I love Sara, and Bee is adorable (her shop giving massive Newt Scamander’s briefcase vibes) I would be falling over myself to work in her bookshop/creature rehab. So strong side characters. Always wanted more of all of them!

The cliffhangers were plenty and I need to read the second book to tie up all the questions I still have!

Overall Rating: 4.75/5⭐️
Spice Rating: 2/5 🌶️

As a debut novel, this was an absolutely phenomenal read from CEJ Greveson! I found Greveson on threads, on a random day, as an indie author with her arc signups open and signing up for it was definitely the best decision ever because i absolutely ADORED this romantasy novel!

Aside from what I was given with the blurb & tropes list, went in with no expectations, only knowing that i was ready to immerse myself in this new world and it did not disappoint one bit!! The day before I picked this arc up to read, i’d been craving a dark academia type vibe book to read - and finding out this was just, and that it was EXACTLY what i needed to satiate my mood reader cravings, i was ecstatic and completely enamored the second I started reading.

This book easy to follow regarding plot & worldbuilding, and you can tell Greveson took her time with introductions, the plotting and preparing you for the journey you’re about to get yourself into with this book. It holds the perfect amount of intrigue, romance, suspense, action and mystery to keep you completely engaged through the book’s entirety - especially with all the unpredictable twists and turns you find yourself wrapped around in! This book had me experiencing every emotions from swooning to laughing to crying - i absolutely loved everything about it.

I have so many questions after that ending, but I CANNOT wait to get my hands on book two!!! I will definitely be sticking around to see how this journey for Billie plays out (and kai and holden of course too)!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶️🌶️

A Desolate Spring is the first book in the Isle of Aestus series.

The book follows Billie, who has the ability to see into other people's minds just by touching them, which leaves her scared to touch others and wanting to isolate.

I liked Billie as a main character. She was a multi-dimensional character with a difficult past. I enjoyed how well-developed and thought-out she was as a character. I also liked how she was able to learn more about her abilities and become more confident.

I liked the found family aspect and the friendships between the characters.

The pacing was slower around the beginning of the book with a lot of world-building, and I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story. However, after about 100 pages, the pace picked up, and I couldn’t put the book down.

The plot was interesting and had multiple layers. Towards the end, there were multiple plot twists I didn’t see coming.

I was a bit confused with the ending because there were so many questions left unanswered. Hopefully, those will be answered in the coming books.

Overall a different & interesting read. I can’t wait to read more!

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved the storyline, the world-building and the characters. I was sucked in almost immediately and didn’t want to put the book down!! I love the development of the FMC throughout the book as she learns more.

I also loved the world building, it wasn’t overwhelming and easy to follow. 😍

I also really enjoyed the representation of mental health and journey to healing. Though we want to face our darkness alone sometimes it’s important to ask for help. Thank you for creating the piece of art that I didn’t know I needed.

I’m excited for the next book and need it asap!!!!! 😂😂 this book also gives off Harry Potter vibes if that helps anyone! 🤭

This was such a good book!

Our FMC was amazing. Yes she thought she was crazy and she stayed away from people but believe me I think she was soooo cool.

She finds out that she’s not fully human, her father has powers. It turns out she has powers too, powers that she thought made her crazy. (A little bit)

She gets a letter telling her that she will have to attend a special school for people who are not human.

Let me just tell you, it gets crazy as she’s pulled more into the new world she knew nothing about while to figure out her powers and herself!

I highly recommend checking out this book!! Can’t wait for the next book!

This is a beautifully crafted slow-burn fantasy with an addictive enemies-to-lovers romance. The world is rich with magic and an eerie atmosphere that pulls you in. The main characters have incredible chemistry—the kind that keeps you hanging on every sharp remark and lingering glance. The way the romance unfolds feels natural and deeply satisfying. Plus, the magical elements add so much depth to the story. The plot twists are perfectly executed—you'll gasp and be shook to your core! If you love fantasy with tension-filled romance and immersive worldbuilding, this one’s worth picking up!

Went into this ARC blind & it was a really interesting read! It’s a fantasy/magical story with the FMC being half Seer half human. Her battle between the mortal world & the magic world was hard to read, having to choose one or the other. I am super excited to see what happens in the next book! I am # Team Lincoln ALL THE WAY

This book had such unique world building, plot and a plethora of twists and turns to draw you in and keep you reading.

Some parts were quiet slow, but the author is aware of this and I personally feel they are needed as there is a great depth to the story and there are so many sub plots.

I loved Billie's character, she has gone through so much in her life already and the mental health representation is done really well. We find out so much about Billie's feelings and her thoughts throughout the book.

The same has to be said of many of the side characters and the author has created some amazing and complex beings.
This book had me experience emotions from laughing to crying and falling in love with Lincoln and the shadow daddy!

There are a lot of loose ends when you finish book, but the author ends on a side note that they will all be tied up in the second book.
I highly recommend this fantasy romance and can't wait for book two.

Fantastic book

What a brilliantly thought-out and well written story. From the first line of chapter one, I was hooked. I actually highlighted the first sentence and went on to make 6 total quotes from chapter one alone. Every single detail has been finessed.

A Desolate Spring is THE book when it comes to supernatural/magical students attending a school of any kind. It far surpasses popular books like The Coven and House of Ydril.

Grevesons ability to write about grief and trauma is harrowingly truthful. Not only can you see yourself reflected in Billie, but you can also find peace with her healing.

I am almost struggling to find the words to justify how brilliant this story actually is. I slowed down my reading so that I could absorb and live every part of the story. It's engaging and intriguing. When you read it, you'll find yourself up at stupid o'clock saying to yourself, "One more chapter."

The pacing was outstanding. There's no fluff dragging on, and we are not speeding through really important parts.

The character development of Billie was sensational, going from a tormented soul with only one person she had to cling on to, to finding friends and family she never thought she'd have. Then to go through such a large trauma and recede back into that tormented loner. It's so true to real life that it makes you feel for Greveson. Writing this could not have been easy in parts.

We are left pent up with anger, seeking vengeance for Billie. I cannot wait for book two to see the retribution she brings. And of course, more importantly, if she ends up as 'his' queen or as 'his' bonded.

First off: I looooved the title. As an aspiring writer myself, I understand how challenging it can be to come up with a fitting title. To the author: you’ve nailed it!

Now, there are quite a few characters we meet. The author paints a powerful picture of each of them and though I had trouble connecting with some of them in the beginning, I loved them all by the end.

Dialogue-wise, there were parts that really cracked me up and parts that tore me apart. As it should be ;)

Story-wise, it did take me a while to get into it, but I found myself fully immersed about a third of the way into the book.

There was a lot of inner dialogue by the FMC (female main character), which was great for learning about her character, thought patterns, and “abilities” (no spoilers here!). However, for worldbuilding, this made things a bit more difficult to follow.

Now, the spice: holy smokes, now that’s what I’m talking about! That was some real intensity in the midst of all that magic. The first spicy scene included a fantasy element, and I almost died of joy reading it. I initially thought the writing felt a bit “young” until we dove into those parts of the book. Man, was I wrong. I WILL be rereading the spice in this book 😁

I rate this book a full 4 stars. Toward the end, my sympathies for the FMC took a solid hit, but my interest in the story never faded.

When one year changes everything you have ever known

Billie Hunt has been living a solitary life since she had a sudden change 8 years ago. Every day is now a struggle not to come in contact with anyone for fear of what she will see when she does. However, there is 1 person that has managed to get past her defenses and makes her feel more normal.

Returning home one day she finds a letter on her desk with no idea how it got there. It is telling her that she is about to go to some other school in a place she can't locate on the internet. She is forced to confront her mother to ask about it and that is when everything begins to change.

When she arrives at the location on the letter she is suddenly whisked away to an entirely different realm. One where she is still looked at as an outsider because of who and what she is. However, her neighbor has made it her mission to become her friend no matter what.

Will she be able to learn enough about herself to find where she actually fits in this world? Will she finally be able to let more people into her life? What will happen to her only friend in the human realm?

This was full of mystery and intrigue. I am hooked and can't wait to see what happens next.

Meet Billie, our half-seer college student. She's got this whole "avoid touch like the plague" thing going on—relatable, right? But then, out of the blue, she receives a letter from a school for the gifted. Picture Hogwarts, minus the giant groundskeeper. And guess what? Billie is also a romance reader! The book vibes? Totally "Fantastic Beasts" !

Now, let's talk about Lincoln. Dark fantasy? Check. Dirty mouth? Double check. When the magical school conveniently misplaces crucial documents about Billie's species, Lincoln steps in. Slow burn alert! Strangers become friends, and friends become lovers. Their banter? Sizzling. Billie discovers her badass powers (cue applause), and Lincoln's shifter form? 🔥 Hot damn! But wait, there's more: Sara and Holden, the ride-or-die friends we all need.

The action scenes? Mind-blowing. The grief? Heart-wrenching. And the ending? More cliffhangers than a Netflix series. Book 2, hurry up! So, grab your cozy blanket, brew some tea, and dive into this low-spice fantasy gem. Rainy day or not, ADS will whisk you away to a world where magic and romance collide. 🌧️📖✨

I absolutely loved this book! I went into this not really knowing what to expect & was genuinely surprised. I was sucked into this world & it has left me with sooo many questions. I will definitely be reading the next book! I enjoyed seeing the journey of Billie & her abilities & her struggles with living in this new world. I loved her relationship with Sara & Holden, I hope their relationships continue to develop. I also hope that more happens with her & Lincoln 🤪. I gave this 4 stars because there were some grammar/spelling issues, extra words & things like that. But, I was still able to follow the story very easily & it wasn’t too noticeable. Billie (FMC): Billie is just fighting an uphill battle the entire story. I throughly enjoyed her character development throughout this first book, can’t wait to see the character growth in book 2️⃣!!!

Lincoln: I loved Lincoln, I loved the banter between him & Billie 💝

Joel: what can I say? Poor Joel

Sara: I loved her bubbly personality, without her Billie would have never come out of her shell. I loved how Sara took Billie under her wing, and instantly loved her 🥰

Holden: I love his banter too!! I love his relationship with Billie & how she feels comfortable with him to say how she really feels…

The closet scene 🚪 I cried laughing 🤣

Kai: Hate him….at least for now

I received an ARC of this book and I can honestly say it is a great debut novel!

The main character is half human, half seer, and at the age of 21, discovers a new world. I really enjoyed this character and also the other characters who became her circle of friends.

The academic setting works well, and the dark atmosphere the author has created really intrigues you as to what is going to happen next.

This book has opened up the plot well and there are many areas left open, however I completely expected this due to it being a series - one I shall definitely be continuing to read as they are released.

Also the surprise at the end (don't want to give anything away) .. didn't see that coming!

I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be keeping an eye out for the release of the next installment.

This book was like a dark Harry Potter for strictly adults because there is spice! It took me a little while to get hooked but once I was there, I was all in! There’s a huge amount of world building to set the story up which I did enjoy and the magical world was really interesting.

The writing was great and I felt that the mental health and trauma representation was done very well. The characters were well put together and the mental health side was done well, creating a flawed but believable main character.

The book is chocked full of mystery and intrigue though there are a lot of unanswered questions which I found a little frustrating but I really can’t wait to see where it goes and am 100% going to be reading more of the series, I can’t wait! The author notes these loose ends will be tied up in Book 2.

A magic academy but for adults!!!
Seers, Wiccas, Fae, Shifters, Healers, Sirens, Lykus, Vampyrs, Seraphs, Alphas, Betas, and Metas.
This book was so good! The magical elements mixed with romance and friendship!
This book was also really emotional and had some deep and heavy moments but they were written in such an authentic and powerful way that was very moving.
There were also lighthearted moments where I just had to kick my feet and giggle.
Billie is such a strong woman and getting to watch her grow into herself and her powers was amazing.
The friendships were the true standouts in this book and I absolutely adored Sara, Holden & Iris.
Lincoln, I love him so much and his character development and seeing his personality unfold throughout was a highlight!
This is such a beautifully written book that pulled at my heartstrings and I cannot wait for book 2.

"Even the darkest of worlds can seep into the lightest of people..."

I loved this book. It starts out slow, but it adds to the complex world build the author magnificently, and intricately, develops. The POV followed is Billie Hunt, our FMC.

What I Loved:
*The world-building: The author's attention to detail in creating a vivid, immersive world is incredible.
*The depth and complexity: The numerous subplots and the rich story kept me hooked.
*Billie’s inner monologue: It’s a brilliant portrayal of her struggles and resilience.

What I did not love:
*The cliffhanger. While I understand its necessity, it left me with essentially zero questions answered by the end of the book. I will not let this hinder my review, as it simply made me excited to see what's next.

I dove into this book without any expectations… and it completely blew me away!

From the very first pages, I found myself immersed in Billie’s world — full of magic, mystery, and emotional depth. Her story is beautifully layered, weaving the past, present, and future into something truly enchanting. So many secrets, so much heart — and the magic? Incredible.

I'm still laughing at the jokes "Lincoln the horse cock" AHAHHAHA I'M SORRY BUT THAT'S THE GEM. I love him btw. Your honour....

“And as you probably guessed,” Sara interrupted my ogling, “horse-cock Lincoln.”

“You’ve been inside me, let me inside you,” he said, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. He knew exactly what he had said, his infuriating smirk was turned at the corners that I could just make out, then he continued, as if to claim an innocence to his words, “Inside your joke, I mean.”

Yes, Billie…what the fuck? - :D that was Me sometimes when she made risky desicions!

So, if you’re a fan of series like Harry Potter, Fourth Wing, or authors like Holly Black and Sarah J. Maas, this book will absolutely speak to your soul. The vibes are rich, sensual, and so full of life.

I laughed, I gasped, I even got mad — and if you want the full play-by-play (including chaotic notes), feel free to check my profile 😂

I’m already itching to start the next one.
Highly recommend joining me on this wild and magical journey! 💫📚

My rating system (explained):
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: It touched my heart and soul in some sort of way. Satisfied in all means.
⭐⭐⭐⭐: I loved it.
⭐⭐⭐: Neutral - not good, not bad.
⭐⭐: It was not my cup of tea.
⭐: I was unwell while reading this book, obviously I didn't like it.

This was a fun read and I’d recommend it! The FMC is a half seer/half human that gets suddenly thrown into a mandatory year at a magical academy. There were a couple scenes where she drove me nuts, but she was a very like-able character. This book ends with a TON of cliffhangers. I’ll be reading the next book when it releases. The acknowledgements said the second book is already written, so hopefully it’s not a long wait to find out what happens! 👀

I'm a really picky reader, so you can imagine my trepidation when starting a book which was not only by an author that I hadn't read any books by but also in a genre that I wouldn't normally go for.
I'm so glad I took the risk, the only thing that let this book down, was it ended, I found the story really easy to get into and the characters really came alive in my imagination, I really hope it doesn't take too long for the second book of the series to be released, I can't wait to see what Billie gets up to next, I hope she and Link get together and that Kai gets what he deserves.

There's a lot happening in this one. Especially once Billie gets to the school. I feel like this one had lots of potential, but it kinda lost me in the back 1/3...
Its dark academia meets fantasy.
The characters are ok, but I didn't really bond with any of them. This is Book 1 of a series, so it does end abruptly. The fmc is cute and feisty. Mmc is dark and brooding. Possible shadow daddy vibes...? I know lots of girlies what would prob eat this up, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Nothing really wrong with it just didn't exactly keep me engaged.

I honestly enjoyed this book!!! It’s one of those books that makes it so hard to go to sleep because you want to know what’s next. I can not wait for the next book!!! I need to see this through!!! I need answers!!! I would recommend this one to everyone!!!
