3.5 ⭐️ | The Younger Woman is an interesting domestic thriller, as it dives into marriage & blinded families. Gabby and Fred have been married for a long time, and their marriage is tested when infidelity is thrown in the mix. This family’s drama goes back to previous generations, and hopefully Gabby can break this generational curse with her adult children. The narrator in this audiobook did a very good job portraying these characters.

An overall solid read that I would recommend for those that like slow-burn domestic thrillers. Thank you Harlequin Audio for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Always remember your conversations - especially with strangers!!

Gabby finds out she made a grave mistake one night by saying things she shouldn't have.

As Gabby and Fred say goodbye to their daughter, Gabby realizes she won’t be able to handle being an empty nester with Fred.

To ease her sorrow, Gabby heads to a bar, has too much to drink, and tells a total stranger, Ellis, that she can’t find later, that she wishes her husband was dead.

Things turn weird because Gabby can’t remember a thing from that night but feels someone is watching her. She gets messages from someone she thinks is the mysterious Ellis, but can’t seem to get in touch with her.

A friend’s husband then confirms that Fred has been cheating on Gabby for years with a younger woman. Could this woman be Ellis?

Find out what happens as we slowly follow what is going on.

I do have to say I was wondering why the book went back to when one of the characters was younger, but it is an essential part of the story.

THE YOUNGER WOMAN gets intense as the book ends and things get wrapped up.

Find out what will haunt Gabby for the rest of her life in this creative, evasive, slow burn thriller. 4/5

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I’m normally not a huge fan of a slower burn with the intensity picking up in the end but it worked for me here. I liked the idea of Gabby confessing a dark secret to a total stranger, the whole concept of it being easier to be candid with someone you don’t know is interesting and I can see how it could be true. The suspense here was quieter, a sense of uneasiness, especially not knowing what Ellis goals and motivations were so maybe that’s why a slow burn made sense for me. There was something almost intoxicating about this book, enough so that even though the big twist wasn’t a surprise to me, I wasn’t bothered that much. If you enjoy books about secrets with a cat and mouse vibe try this!

Many thanks to The Hive, Park Row, and NetGalley for the gifted copy of The Younger Woman by Cate Ray. I enjoyed this thriller. Anytime there's a domestic thriller with twisted spouses and unreliable characters you can count on me to read it.

Gabby - a woman who has woken up and realized after her children fly the nest that she really can't stand her husband. While out one night Gabby indulges a bit too much and ends up drunkingly telling a stranger at a bar that she would love for her husband to be dead. This stranger takes things into her own hands and odd things begin happening after Gabby's fated meeting with this stranger. Some things should never be spoken out loud because you just never know who you are really talking to.

This book was very twisty - cat and mouse games from beginning to end. I did figure out the major plot twist about 75% into the book. Even though I had guessed correctly I still enjoyed this fast paced domestic thriller.

Book Review: The Younger Woman By Cate Ray 📚🔍
I was thrilled to receive an audiobook ARC of The Younger Woman from NetGalley, courtesy of Ms. Ray and Harlequin Audio. A huge thank you for the opportunity to dive into this intriguing narrative! 🎧

Narration Excellence 🌟 First things first: Hannah Curtis’s narration was nothing short of exceptional! Her ability to capture the nuances of both Gabby and the younger woman added a layer of depth to the story that truly enhanced the listening experience. I was completely drawn in by her performance.

A Dual POV Journey 👩‍❤️‍👩 The Younger Woman tells the story through the dual perspectives of Gabby, a woman navigating the rocky waters of a loveless marriage with a husband who is a serial cheater, and the enigmatic younger woman who seems to have a long con in play. While the premise is tantalizing, the storytelling felt like a slow burn. The plot flowed well, but I found myself yearning for a little more momentum throughout the earlier sections.

A Twisty Ending 🔄 The conclusion certainly packed a punch! So much happened in the last hour and a half that it felt a bit rushed, leaving me with a desire for more clarity on certain twists. This whirlwind of events tied the story up neatly but also left me scratching my head at times, trying to piece together all that unfolded. 🤔

Final Thoughts 🤷‍♀️ Overall, The Younger Woman offers an interesting premise and strong performances, particularly with the audiobook format. While it may have its slow moments and a somewhat chaotic ending, the emotional stakes and character dynamics keep you engaged. I would rate this a solid 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, as it had the potential to be something truly remarkable but left me wanting a bit more coherence in the final act.

If you're in the mood for a domestic thriller that explores themes of betrayal and empowerment, give it a listen! You might just find it worth the ride. 🌪️💔

Happy reading! ✨

The Younger Woman by Cate Ray. Thanks to @parkrowbooks for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now that Gabby is an empty nester, she realizes she hates her husband. When she meets a stranger, Ellis, she divulges this after too many drinks and says she wishes he was dead. After Gabby tries to track Ellis down but it seems she may not be who she says she is.

This one didn’t pick up for me until the very end when it was revealed what was going on. It was slower paced through out, which sometimes is okay, but I kept feeling like I was missing something. It just didn’t have that connect for me. I did like how the past ended up connecting with the present.

“Because there’s something I’m missing - have been missing right from the start. And until I know what it is, the possibility of it is going to terrorize me.”

The Younger Woman comes out 2/25.

Ooh what a reveal at the end.

“The younger woman” follows the life of Gabby, experiencing empty nest syndrome after her daughter leaves for university she has a very sudden and harsh realization that she hates her husband. And understandably so he’s only cheated on her several times throughout their marriage.

After making it known she wants to file for divorce she is faced with the reality that her soon to be ex husband is dating and in love with a younger woman, except things aren’t adding up because she recently met this younger woman at a bar and had a very interesting conversation with her.

This book filled me with woman rage, after learning about Gabbys childhood I’m even more annoyed at her for even putting up with her husband for as long as she did and refusing to out him to her children and make him deal with the consequences of his betrayals. I’m annoyed that she never screamed at her dad that it was all his fault and I’m even more annoyed at her rejection of Ellis. Honestly I wish this woman would grow a back bone and see things through because her husband imo deserves no sympathy but that’s just my wishful sadistic thinking 😂😂 if you can’t play out your revenge fantasies in book format then honestly what’s the point 😆😆

The way the book came to an end did give it a more realistic / real life feel to it but if I’m being honest that left me wanting because I don’t want to read about real life scenarios where the stomachs her rage and lets everyone walk all over her I want to see her embrace the rage and watch everyone get scorned but never mind 😂 due to that this one is getting 3 stars from me,

The audio narrator did a great job so props to her.

Thank you for the gifted audio copy,

Wow….. what an interesting read… plot twist I never saw coming … a wife and mother who becomes an empty nester left with just a miserable marriage to keep her company. Gabby, the wife, goes out to drown her sorrows where she meets Ellis and in her drunken stupor confesses that she wishes her husband was dead. When Gabby tries to figure out what’s going on with her husband and who Ellis really is, things start to get interesting…

Imagine feeling desperate about becoming an empty nester, but instead of that, you’re consumed by the thought that you despise your husband. This feeling even leads you to entertain dark thoughts.

After a few drinks, Gabby starts talking to a stranger named Ellis. She talks about her husband, Fred, and how she’s repulsed by him, even wishing him dead. Was it the drink talking, or is this something Gabby genuinely wishes would happen? Ellis takes this literally, and they open a Pandora’s box.

Fred has no idea what’s about to hit him. In fact, nefariousness isn’t just Gabby’s problem. Fred isn’t a saint. Secrets, lies, and manipulation intertwine as Gabby, Fred, and Ellis follow crazy paths that could end things for at least one of them.

Although this book was a bit of a slow start, this intense thriller really captured my attention. Then factor in an extra layer due to the spectacular narration by Hannah Curtis. Her performance truly brought this thrilling book to life.

Many thanks to Park Row and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Ah, who among us hasn't had a drunken rambling conversation at a bar after an emotional event. Most people don't try to get their husbands killed though. But Gabby does.
Or does she? She can't hardly remember anything that happened, but she sets in motion some big wheels that cannot easily be stopped.
With the dual timelines, readers are able to see what happened to Gabby in the past and put together what it means now. Gabby herself, however, is unaware of what is coming. It culminates in some big events that change everything.
Oddly empowering for a thriller, I loved that part.

A pretty fast moving book, at first I did wonder what was going on but about half way through the book I guessed what was going on and why. I also thought some of the whys and parts added to the story where not explained but I enjoyed the authors writing and found it a quick read.

This was pretty good. I finished it in one sitting. It is a slow burn so you definitely need to be in the mood for that if you want to read this book! It kept my interest enough to where the slow burn didn’t bother me. It gave me a sense of uneasiness. I did guess some of the twists, but it was still good.

Looking for your next can't-put-down thriller? Cate Ray's The Younger Woman delivers exactly that. This gripping story follows Gabby, who's just starting to enjoy life as an empty nester with her husband Fred. But one tipsy night at a bar changes everything when she meets Ellis, a mysterious younger woman. Gabby makes a deadly mistake: she tells Ellis she wishes her husband were dead. Big oops.

What happens next? A dangerous game of cat and mouse that'll keep you reading way past bedtime. The characters feel real - you'll get why Gabby does what she does, even when you want to shake some sense into her. And Ellis? She's the kind of character who makes you nervous every time she appears on the page.

Ray knows how to write about real issues that matter - marriage problems, hidden desires, and the secrets we keep from the people closest to us. She wraps all this up in a story that moves fast and hits hard, just like she did in her previous hit, Good Husbands.

If you love authors like Paula Hawkins or Mary Kubica, you'll want to grab this book. It's smart, it's tense, and it'll make you think twice about talking to strangers in bars.

Bottom line: Get this book if you love thrillers that feel both fresh and frighteningly possible. It's the perfect weekend read - just make sure you don't have any plans because you won't want to put it down.

3.5 rounded up!

**What Worked:**
- A fresh spin on the classic "younger woman" trope
- A slow-burning tension that keeps you unsettled
- A layered plot that gradually builds intrigue

While *The Younger Woman* didn’t completely blow me away, it had an almost hypnotic quality that kept me engaged despite its slower pace. The premise of confessing dark thoughts to a stranger is fascinating—there’s something compelling about how easy it can be to share secrets with someone you may never see again. That sense of unease lingers throughout, especially with Ellis’s true motives remaining unclear for much of the book.

The suspense is quieter here, more psychological than action-driven, and while I guessed the twist early, I wasn’t necessarily disappointed. The way the past and present weave together adds some depth.

That said, the pacing felt off at times. I kept waiting for a big moment to hit, and while the ending brought things together, it didn’t fully make up for the sluggish middle. Still, if you like slow-burn thrillers with a cat-and-mouse dynamic and tangled secrets, this one is worth checking out.

The Younger Woman by Cate Ray is a twisty cat and mouse slow burn that will have you hooked!

When Gabby and Fred find themselves empty nesters, Gabby realizes that the love she once had for Fred has disappeared. Sick of the lies and the cheating Gabby wants out. When one night in a bar Gabby meets Ellis, an intriguing young woman, and strikes up a friendship of some sorts. Growing increasingly more drunk as the night goes on, Gabby says something that will change the course of her life forever. She wishes that Fred was dead. From that point on life as Gabby knows it takes a dark dive when she finds out that the enigmatic young woman at the bar may not be who she says she is. So who is Ellis really? And just what is she hiding?

This was a slow burn but it is loaded with suspense and tension until the end! I love the way Ray writes her characters, making them feel very complex, real and full of emotions. The ominous sense of unease throughout this book is addicting and I didn't want to put it down. Highly recommend this twisty page turner! Looking forward to more from Cate Ray!

When Gabby confesses to Ellis, a random woman she meets at a bar that she's had enough of her husband, Fred, the last thing he expects is for her to get involved with him. But that is exactly what happens. As Gabby pushes forward with the divorce, she investigates Ellis as ammunition and finds out that maybe she isn't as straightforward as she seems. This book was fabulously narrated on audio. I enjoyed the storyline and had trouble turning this one off! I listened to it while I cooked and drove to do groceries and the school pick up. It was twisty, it was fast paced and it was addictive. An overall solid thriller, I would definitely recommend!

Thank you to Harlequin Audio for this gifted ALC!

It’s a tale as old as time. A grey haired geriatric with a 20 something blonde hanging on his arm. The Younger Woman plays on this trope, but makes it fresh and entertaining.

This book was more layered than I expected it to be, and that’s a good thing. Because I think without that depth, it wouldn’t have been as special. The layers kept me guessing, kept me entertained and made me care about the outcome of our dirtbag male character. God, he was insufferable. I won’t say more without spoilers, but I want to rant in this review about how much he absolutely sucked. The audacity of some people, seriously. She was just trying to make him feel included and then he goes and …

Anyway.

I enjoyed this. It was perfect popcorn thriller material.

This one threw me for a loop!

Gabby and Fred have been married for a long time. As a matter of fact, their youngest (of two) has just gone off to college… and with this, Gabby realizes that she doesn’t even LIKE her husband anymore… [Believe me when I tell you she has a lot of good reasons for this!!]

She lets her husband know how she’s feeling, and, well, let the wars begin!!

One night she meets a young, beautiful, energetic woman at the local bar…and Gabby just might have one too many. With this, she tells ‘Ellis’ how she really feels about her husband… and that she wouldn’t mind if he were dead.😵

But, it’s just small talk, right? She’ll never see Ellis again…

And then, there’s a whole other side to this story…one that was not mentioned in the preview, and kind of threw me off a bit…. It revolves around Gabby’s childhood… and her parents… and THEIR problems…

Let me 🛑 STOP 🛑 right here, as I don’t want to give anything away! But, if I’ve gotten your attention, and this sounds like one you’d enjoy, look for it now! The release date is TODAY!! 2/25/25!

#TheYoungerWoman by #CateRay and narrated nicely by #HannahCurtis.

Thanks so much to #NetGalley and #HarlequinAudio for an ARC of the audiobook… due out today! So, look 👀 for it on shelves now!

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me! Absolutely would’ve been 5 if I’d been able to figure out the other timeline before it was spelled out for me! 😬🤔

The Younger Woman
Cate Ray
Publishing Date: February 25, 2025

🎧 Narrator: Hannah Curtis 🎧

The Younger Woman was a unique thriller in the sense that it was a slow burn and much more character focused. If you enjoy domestic thrillers that really dive into the mind and life of the characters, and don’t mind a slower build to the twisty action, you’ll really enjoy this one!

I found myself unsure how I actually felt about this book at points, and I think that’s largely due to the fact that there is such a sense of unease throughout as the characters all feel unreliable and untrustworthy. This is not an action packed thriller, but at the same time, I could not stop listening! I was totally gripped by the subtle suspense of it all and I needed to know how things were going to turn out. I was invested in Gabby and was totally rooting for her to stand up for herself, especially to her awful manipulative husband 😒

🎧 Hannah Curtis did a great job narrating this one! I flew through it over the course of two days and have zero regrets about reading this one with my ears.

Gabby and Fred have just become empty nesters and now that they don't have children to look after and hold them together realize they can't stand one another. As the couple navigates divorce options an intriguing young woman befriends Gabby and offers to help her keep her beautiful house going forward through the divorce. Gabby wakes up the next morning with very little recollection of her meeting with the woman. And then the woman begins to call Gabby and things get very weird very quickly. If only Gabby could remember the conversation she had with this woman. What did she agree to? This was a fun domestic thriller that had me listening non stop. It had just enough twists and turn to keep me glued to my ear buds. I listened to the audio version the the narrator was quite good. Recommended. 4 stars

The title alone made me want to read this and the first chapter pulled me in right away. We’ve got two women—one’s the jaded wife, the other’s this mysterious younger woman—and they’re both tied to the same guy’s super shocking death. Like, dramaaa. Right away, I was invested because, hello, secrets and betrayal? Ummmm duh.

I was living for the slow-burn suspense, and Cate Ray totally nailed the whole “do we ever really know someone?” vibe. The characters felt super real—messy, complicated, and kinda shady in the best way. I kept switching sides, like, “Wait, who do I trust?!” Some twists I totally saw coming, but a few actually got me, which, love that for me.

If I had to nitpick, the middle got a teeny bit slow in spots, and I wanted just a liiittle more urgency. But overall? This was such a solid psychological thriller, and I was fully obsessed till the end.

One night at a bar, Gabby meets an enigmatic younger woman named Ellis, and in a haze of drunkenness, she confesses that she wishes Fred dead. Surely she didn’t expect anything to come of it, but when she tries to track Ellis down again, she realizes that Ellis might not have been who she said she was.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” This is the perfect quote for this book.

This book twists and turns and has you guessing. Gabby is someone who has regrets! And as this story unravels, it becomes evident that she has really screwed up in her decisions…or has she been a victim…you need to read this to find out.

I enjoyed the intensity and the questions that come up as this story moves along. It really keeps the reader wondering what is going to happen next.

The narrator, Hannah Curtis, did ok. She tended to get overly excited or emotional in spots. But this was a minor issue.

Need a good guessing game…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

**A Captivating Dual POV Journey**—In *The Younger Woman*, we dive deep into the tumultuous lives of Gabby, trapped in a heartbreaking marriage with her unfaithful husband, and a mysterious younger woman who seems to have an agenda of her own. The premise is certainly intriguing, and while the narrative unfolds like a slow-burning candle, I found myself craving a bit more excitement in the earlier chapters to keep the momentum alive.

**A Thrilling Twist of an Ending**! Just when you think you’ve unravelled the complexities, the final act delivers a whirlwind of surprises. The last hour and a half was a rollercoaster ride of revelations, but it felt a bit rushed, leaving me wanting more clarity on some of the shocking twists. While the conclusion ties things up neatly, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of confusion as I attempted to piece together the intricate puzzle that had been crafted.

If you're ready for a compelling domestic thriller that dives into themes of betrayal and empowerment, then you need to give this book a read.

I honestly wasn’t expecting much from this audiobook, especially at the beginning. The premise didn’t exactly pull me in, and I wasn’t a fan of how the characters were treating each other. But as I kept listening, I found myself oddly hooked. The twist wasn’t something I’d usually enjoy, but it still managed to hold my attention.

When the twist hit, I wasn’t blown away, but it did wrap things up in a way that kept me engaged. It’s definitely not the most original thriller, but it keeps you entertained from start to finish.

If you’re looking for something fast-paced and suspenseful, this is perfect. It’s not a story that will stick with you forever, but it’s definitely a solid listen when you just want something fun and gripping.

This book had me glued to the pages and my couch until the very last page!!
After dropping their daughter off at college and watching her husband drool over every woman who is younger than her, Gabby has come to the realization she hates her husband! Their now empty nesters and she feels like this is her chance to for a new beginning, one that her husband isn’t walking all over her. The only problem she doesn’t want to lose her house that was left to her. One night at her local bar and a few to many drinks, she spills her guts to the mysterious and beautiful Ellis. Gabby makes the deadly mistake: she tells Ellis she wishes her husband were dead. What happens next is a cat and mouse game, one that is hard to tell whose the cat or the mouse… the story unfolds in a showing way and that left my jaw on tbr ground!! Whose playing who?

I liked it until the ending. She just rolls over like the doormat she's been the whole time? Wtf. I'm specifically thinking of the hospital scene when the MIL treats her like shit (again). Grow a fucking spine, Jesus Christ. I can't wait to read the sequel where she hasn't grown from this at all and continues to let every man in her life walk all over her while she smiles and coddles and brings them donuts. Barf.

This book sounded really interesting, but it wasn’t for me. I found it very slow and some of the things that happened were a little far-fetched, which made it hard for me to remain interested. The ending did catch me by surprise so I guess that was a positive.
