Demon's Mate

Rate this book
Viv had her job, her best friend, and a great apartment. So what if dating had been awful lately? When her best friend finds his forever person, it turns out that those paranormal romance books she liked to read had some truth to them. Unfortunately, she also learns that having a mate doesn’t mean happily ever after.

Mac wasn’t looking for a mate, especially a human one. He’s avoided humans as much as possible for hundreds of years after his first mate tried to kill him. To say he has trust issues would be an understatement. He’s happy his friend found his mate and they seemed to be doing well, but no one could make him accept the one suddenly thrust into his orbit. Who knew fate would give him another mate after all these years?

Will they be able to overcome Mac’s fears, or will an enemy lurking in the shadows take the choice from them?

First thing first, check tw for this book.
There are parts that are more splatterpunk kinda vibe so just know that ahead of time.

I enjoyed the book! I like the idea that nonhumans are also living amongst the humans and that nonhumans can find their mates amongst the humans too.

I found myself laughing a bit more in the beginning at the banter…it lost some of those moments of lightness later in the book.

When Viv rolls into Mac’s life he wants nothing to do with her. Her bad luck forces him to shadow her, pulling him in. Can he forget his past for his mate? Or will it prove to be something he just can’t get over.

This is my first read from this author. Beautiful cover, though to me it looks like mermaid fins, which makes me think of sea creatures rather than demons.

Demon’s Mate is a paranormal romance read with a snappy plot and just the right amount of spice and action. The main trope is fated mates, one of my favorites. While the writing leaves something to be desired (grammar/punctuation, simple syntax, lacking description, overused or strange choice of dialogue tags, sentence fragments, telling rather than showing), it’s clear that the author put thought into making the world their own. However, several aspects were underdeveloped for me, namely the world building and the main characters + the chemistry between them. Some parts moved too quickly and others too slowly. There were moments when I questioned if something was purposeful or unintentionally overlooked.

The blurb doesn't give much to go on. Demon's Mate starts out light, but don’t let that fool you. I thought I would be in for a typical rom-com sort of PNR, but the suspense element was a pleasant surprise. I appreciated that there was a little pushback from the MCs so that we could see their relationship blossom independently from the fated bond, and the fact that Mac and Viv's journey together was a little rocky made the happy ending that much more satisfying. It also kept the book engaging.

Favorite quote:
"I think being friends with your partner is the best thing to keep a relationship healthy. It means you can hang out and do things together besides just nookie. I mean one day you’ll be old, or even just have a cold and not feel like it, and you still need to be able to relate to each other."

I would recommend Demon’s Mate to those who appreciate simple prose and are looking for a relatively quick read that has a little bit of everything: contemporary feel and fantasy elements, action and peril, smut, and humor wrapped up with a pretty bow of an HEA. I received an ARC for free through Booksirens (thank you!), but I am leaving this review voluntarily and all thoughts are my own.

Demon's Mate is my first book by author Dakota Harper. This was a page turner; I couldn't put it down.

Viv and Mac each have their own past traumas they have to deal with. Mac has had a past mate who betrayed him so he is wary of humans. Viv has had some traumatic experiences which she has to overcome. I am glad Mac was able to help Viv through her past experiences. He was a rock for her when she needed someone there for her.

There was a big mystery involved trying to figure out some things. I didn't know how things were going to be resolved or who was going to be the culprit behind it all. It was nice to see all the caring and thought that went into making sure Viv was safe at all times. There were a number of people there to protect her and it was nice to see a close knit group always looking out for each other.

This darker story is almost split into sections; the before, the during, and the after, of our FMC's trauma. The after is when the ball gets rolling. Despite a double adult-napping of his mate and her bestie, our MMC really gets a chance to shine when he decides to push past his own issues and support Viv in her healing journey. Mac was kind of a jerk in the beginning, but he's haunted by his past, and we can look it past it just this once. When he finally came around to see how fantastic life with Viv (and her bestie and his demon) could be, we got some hurt/comfort and honest emotion. I love how fiercely Mac protected his friends and love and how he always respected Viv when asking for consent or approval. He may have started as a red flag, but Viv saw a carnival and gave him a run for his money.

Opening these pages, you step into a paranormal world mixed with humans. Learning about mates from her best friend and how it works leads the FMC to go back into the dating pool, hoping for something similar to his relationship. Traumatic events and unspeakable deeds in great description keep the tension high. I found this story to be action-packed, holding me on the edge of my set, anticipating the next events to unfold. I recommend this to all those who enjoy paranormal romance with a dark streak.

I absolutely loved the concept of the demon world mixing with humans. I would have really enjoyed some more world building of the heaven/hell/demon world. It just felt a bit rushed, not enough time to really know the characters and develop an emotional attachment. The story was there but just wanted more. Check trigger warnings. I found this book to be very interesting. It kept you engaged throughout. I loved how it took twists and turns and really kept you intrigued. Not super spicy, just enough heat. Great for a younger crowed. Loved that it didn’t end leaving you wondering or asking questions.

There are things I love and I hate about this book.

This book is in third person view, (and as a personal preference), I feel this book would have benefited, and at times felt a little less “over explained” in it had been written in first person. There are times that scenes in this book go into vast detail and I think it’s maybe a little unnecessary. I always appreciate when an author is trying to paint a picture for our minds to set a scene, however some of the descriptions feel like long blurbs that take away from the actual purpose or content of said scene. It’s okay for the reader to have to connect some dots themselves, it makes books magical because no one experiences the “visual” side the same.

Also with things being over explained it feels like you’re being spoon fed the information, which makes it over simplified in a way. Your mind almost has to work less to process what’s going on and makes it feel like a lower reading level than young adult. There are times in this book that I appreciate the simplicity of vocab because it makes it a “light read” that I can finish in one setting.

I really appreciate the character development in this book. All characters should be flawed and throughout the story come to an understanding with those flaws and work through them. That is exactly what these characters do. I also love how her female main character isn’t a complete push over and makes the man redeem himself. Too often in romance novels the man is an ahole and the woman takes him back or accepts him without any issue of his past actions. The only portion of character development I had an issue with is the sudden involvement of sex or sexual acts between Viv and Mac, kinda came outta no where when they were just doing a kissing scene to take it slow.

I feel like this book had excellent plot in the beginning and a little bit around 3/4 of the book. I feel like a good book needs a central plot along with the romance along side it. It just keeps everything moving for me personally. In the beginning there is a kidnapping and rescue plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. Once that is taken care of the book got a little stagnant to me. It took me a few days to finish this book because I kept putting it down. Then towards the end around 75% the plot gets amped up again with another stalkerish situation. I was starting to enjoy it again briefly and suddenly the villain is caught. I was kinda expecting a twist where it wasn’t actually him because it was so sudden. There was also a lack of dialogue from the villain. I just wanted more from that character, more backstory, where did he come from, why was he so personally invested, just to wrap it up more.

The remainder of the book I skimmed a bit because I knew there wasn’t enough left in it for a plot twist. It finishes up the smutty side of the book and familial ties which I think is important but didn’t keep me as interested. Overall I think this was a great book for character development. I wish the plot was a little more consistent throughout with more twists. The writing style was 50/50 for me. I definitely want to read more by this author, her characters are well thought out and have actual personalities that are enjoyable to read.

Tried to keep too many spoilers out of this but makes for a hard review.

I had a fantasy while reading this book. It went like this: the author hires a really good developmental editor who sits her down and makes her read every chapter out loud. Then,  explain how the events of that chapter contribute to the plot. They discuss, and the editor brings the author around to realizing that a full third of the chapters (like the one where the reader follows a character to work while he investigates a crime not relevant to the plot in any way) do not, in fact, progress the plot in any fashion and should therefore be cut. Yes, that means the book would be a hundred or so pages shorter. But it would be a significantly better book for it. Similarly, the editor forces the author to tell them the plot and helps the author tighten it up so it doesn't feel so much like a list of random events that pop up indiscriminately instead of a plot.

The simple fact of the matter is that I was bored out of my mind by this book. I liked the characters well enough. I appreciated the platonic cross-gender friendship, found family, and engaging sex scenes (even if they 100% do not fit the tone of the rest of the book). But, honestly, the story drags a lot. This isn't helped by pedestrian writing and endless repetition. I lost count of how many times something happened or a character was told something and then turned around and told someone else the same thing. I do not need to read everything twice. I do not want to read everything twice! This got significantly worse past the halfway mark.

Lastly, a large personal complaint (and a spoiler): As a heavy reader of the romance genre, I suffer heavily from rape fatigue. I'm just so sick of reading it. So, I am really critical of rape (and attempted rape) in books. I don't mean trigger warnings or what is or isn't appropriate in a romance/dark romance. But every time an author throws it in as a cheap plot device (and it's too often just a cheap plot device), I pause and put true thought into it if it was necessary to the story or not. I similarly side-eye the use of a scorned (or similar) woman as a villain. (There's no shortage of internalized misogyny in a lot of this particular trope's depictions.) Here we have a villainous woman using gang rape as revenge for the loss of her lover. It isn't necessary to the plot at all. In fact, it feels tacked on and out of place, considering the character has been physically abused for days prior to this event. The escalation feels unnatural. The torture was bad enough without needing to go the extra mile. I promise authors, readers know a villain is a villain even if you don't sign-post it with rape.

There are those who will love this book, I am sure. I did not. I could see good bones in it, but I do not feel the author managed to pull it off, and I also do not think the author and I have the same ideas of what makes a good story.

When Viv accidentally walks in on her best friend and roommate, Thomas, with his boyfriend, she abruptly becomes aware of a hidden world full of demons, angels, vampires, and shifters. As Thomas is going to live happily ever after with the love of his life, D, Viv worries about becoming a third wheel. She attempts to get back into dating, but she can't get over D's friend Mac. Unfortunately, Mac wants nothing to do with her. But when Thomas and Viv are abducted due to an arrest D and Mac were a part of, Mac can't deny his feelings any longer. Can D and Mac find their mates before it's too late? And can Mac undo the heartbreak he gave Viv?

Demon's Mate is written in third person omniscient point of view, which unfortunately creates distance between the reader and the characters. While this distance is extremely helpful during the more violent scenes in the novel, it makes it more difficult to really care about Viv and Mac, as we are merely told their thoughts and feelings rather than experiencing them with them. Due to his extreme bias against humans, Mac is difficult to care about, as not only is he not claiming his mate, he's actively preventing her from finding someone to love and care for her. When he finally decides he wants Viv, Mac almost comes across as desperately love-bombing her. Thankfully, Viv is an extremely likable and reasonable character, and she is not quick to just roll over and forgive Mac when he finally starts showing her affection.

The thing that pushes this book to a four star over a three star rating is the extremely realistic depiction of recovery from trauma. Too frequently trauma is glossed over in books, with characters going through harrowing experiences with little to no long term damage. Not so in Demon's Mate. Both Viv and Thomas have real physical and psychological damage to recover from, and it's not treated with repression and simple exercise or other endorphin releasing activities. While the more romantic aspects of the book aren't the strongest, Demon's Mate is ultimately a beautiful tale of recovery from both long term and short term trauma. I would recommend caution for more sensitive readers.

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
"Demon's Mate" is a delightful blend of paranormal romance and otherworldly adventure, showcasing the journey of two unlikely mates, Mac and Viv, as they navigate the complexities of love.

From the outset, the narrative grabs the reader's attention with its poignant exploration of rejection and much later acceptance, as Mac, a male demon, and Viv, a female human, find themselves drawn together despite the odds. The dynamics of their relationship are further enriched by the parallel romance between their best friends, adding depth and complexity to the storyline.

One of the book's standout features is its seamless integration of multiple worlds, offering readers a captivating glimpse into realms beyond the ordinary. The interplay between these realms adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, enriching the overall reading experience.

However, while "Demon's Mate" excels in many aspects, it is not without its flaws. The final confrontation, in particular, feels rushed and lacking in detail, leaving readers craving more resolution and closure. Additionally, the use of the term "mons" to describe female anatomy may be unfamiliar to some readers, causing a momentary disconnect.

As an ARC reader, I appreciate the opportunity to provide an honest review of the book. Despite its shortcomings, I found "Demon's Mate" to be an enchanting read that kept me thoroughly engaged from start to finish. I eagerly anticipate the possibility of a sequel or spinoff focusing on the captivating secondary characters, further exploring the richly imagined world crafted by the author.

In conclusion, "Demon's Mate" is a charming tale of love, acceptance, and otherworldly adventure that is sure to captivate fans of paranormal romance. With its endearing characters and imaginative world-building, it is a book well worth adding to your reading list.

I absolutely LOVED this book. This was extremely well-written. The character development was spot on. The blending of both the human world and nonhuman worlds was superb. The author did a great job making this a clear and concise read in every way possible.

The descriptions in this book were insanely vivid. (My fave example:black sanded beaches in the Netherworld with red water!!) This book is also very graphic in the torture scenes that happen, so be warned if that is not your cup of tea.

Demon’s Mate is a dark paranormal romance novel. Heaven and Hell exist but they work together and not against each other. There are demons, angels, shapeshifters, vampires, fae, etc. This story primarily focuses on the demons of this other world known as the Netherworld. Humans can only visit this world if they are fully mated. To be fully mated, markings will appear on each mate binding them to each other forever.

Viv and Thomas’s friendship in this book was so authentic. Their personalities just meshed seamlessly together. They are the two MC humans.

D and Mac are the MC demons in the story. D is Thomas’s mate and Mac is D’s best friend. Mac had his trust betrayed by a past human mate that turned him bitter against having another human or any type of mate for that matter. There was obvious chemistry when Viv and Mac first met even though Mac denied it.

This story was so fun to read and to see Viv and Mac’s relationship grow and turn out to be something beautiful for everyone. This was truly a feel good story (minus the torture scenes of the abduction in the story) these four characters became such a close knit family and it was such a beautiful mesmerizing read.

Thank you to Book Sirens and Harper Dakota for this ARC! Demon’s Mate will be available on April 30, 2024.

Fated Mates, Family Bonds & a Fresh Underworld Take

Demon's Mate is a dark paranormal romance with thrilling undercurrents and an engaging storyline centered around fated mates, the strength of found family, and the deeply personal journey of healing from trauma.

Harper Dakota offers a fresh and unique take on demons from the Underworld/Netherworld, which I found to be one of the book’s most compelling elements.

While I genuinely appreciated the plot and world-building, I did find myself feeling somewhat disconnected from the characters at times. I believe this was due to the third person “all-kniwing” point of view, which can unintentionally create distance between the reader and the characters' emotions. A deeper use of “showing” rather than “telling”—with added sensory details and character beats—might help immerse readers more fully into the experience.

That said, the themes are strong, and the emotional stakes are clear. It’s a book that isn’t afraid to explore dark places, so I highly recommend checking for content warnings beforehand. Personally, I don't trigger easily, but this one does include sensitive themes.

As for spice, I’d rate it around a 3.5 out of 5 on the 🔥🌶 scale. However, spice levels can be subjective, and some readers may find this book more intense than I did. So read with awareness, but don’t let that keep you from discovering a bold, imaginative, and intriguing story.

Demon’s Mate by Harper Dakota is an intense and thrilling paranormal romance that will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The story revolves around a fierce heroine who finds herself irresistibly drawn to a powerful demon, leading to a whirlwind of danger, passion, and supernatural intrigue.

Dakota’s world-building is exceptional, creating a dark yet captivating universe filled with demons, magic, and tension. The chemistry between the main characters is electric, with just the right balance of fiery romance and emotional depth. I loved how the author gave the protagonist a strong voice, making her relatable and someone you can root for throughout her challenges.

While the plot is fast-paced and gripping, there are a few moments where the pacing felt a bit rushed, and I wished for more development in some side characters. However, the twists and turns in the storyline kept me hooked until the very end.

If you’re a fan of paranormal romance with a dash of danger and heat, Demon’s Mate is a must-read. I’m looking forward to more from Harper Dakota in this genre!

Viv and Mac’s meeting wasn’t the usual paranormal romance where the guy finds his mate and claims her whether she wants it or not. Viv finds out about demons when she catches her best friend with his boyfriend and then when she meets his friend, she feels a pull towards him, but MAC wants nothing to do with her and is quite harsh with Viv.
To be honest, I really didn’t like MAC at first and when he finally realizes she’s not like the awful humans in his past, she makes him grovel and work for a chance. I would have liked a little more grovelling, but he did start to redeem himself.
They have to deal with some intense moments within paranormal encounters within the real world and it was a fun, interesting read with great plot twists and plenty of romance and smexy moments. I loved the build up and side characters. It was a great page turner and I enjoyed it from start to finish and wanted more!

But there is one problem , Mac does not want a mate, he's not keen on it after what his first mate tried to do to him. But fate has other ideas and he's mates to a bloody human. Brooding, hateful special agent meets sweet, innocent librarian in a tale of magic, mates and mystical creatures! Mac and Viv belong to two different worlds, literally, and two different lifestyles. Mac has been burnt before by a past mate and this ruined his trust in humans. Viv has absolutely *zero* clue demons, werewolves and other creatures exist. As fate would have it, Mac and Viv are forced to be around each other when their best friends become mates. Viv feels the pull between her and Mac, but Mac refuses to acknowledge that he may have another human mate. But, can he overcome his previous trauma to save his mate when his dangerous career comes looking for a way to harm him - through his mate?

Grabbed the book out of curiosity as demons are a girls best friend … but I swear that Viv has to be the unluckiest girl.

I absolutely love the relationship with her BF Thomas … and his fated mate she walks in on 😂

Viv is the focus and Mac is a numbskull but I sure enjoy his groveling…

Fated mates and almost rejected mates

Demons and angels and nasty killers that cross lines

Stalkers and death threats ….

The underworld you never knew existed..

Uncle Luc … man he needs his own fated mate

There wasn’t anything I didn’t like and plenty I wanted to delve more into .. you could do an entire series with just Viv … Thomas .. D .. Mac and all their friends they help create their family.

Demon’s Mate is a paranormal romance read with a snappy plot and just the right amount of spice and action. Mac and Viv's journey together was a little rocky made the happy ending that much more satisfying. It also kept the book engaging. I like the idea that nonhumans are also living amongst the humans, and that nonhumans can find their mates amongst the humans too. Viv and Mac are such compelling characters that I couldn't put the book down! Demon's Mate is ultimately a beautiful tale of recovery from both long term and short term trauma. I would recommend caution for more sensitive readers.

I love all things shifters, demons and angels. This book was so good! I only put it down to sleep!

Viv and Mac’s story was good and loves the surprises towards the end, (can’t give it away) but Lucifer is a bad ass!

Viv and her bestie Thomas do everything together and can’t bear to be apart. They are both human and don’t think demons and shifters are real but come to find out they are. Thomas finds a mate who is nonhuman and is willing to live with Viv and Thomas so they can continue to be in each other’s lives. It becomes a very interesting story of fated mates, besties, kidnappings, and interesting story of what it could be like in what we think of hell. I enjoyed the flow of the story and the characters and even laughed at times. As always an HEA!

Such a wonderful book. There was so much action, steam and romance all packed into one story. There are some very dark places in this book but they are necessary to the plot. The FMC has such strength of will that she should be everyone's ideal of what a strong woman should be. Mac, the demon, is so loyal and protective, the perfect book boyfriend. Every once in a while you just need to read a book with a bite to it. I highly recommend this book to all dark romance readers.,

The story has good and interesting concept for plot and pair of MC's. However many aspects in world building are left underdeveloped and my couriosity as reader is not satisfied.

I feel there is potential for more in this story, especially that MC's have some good moments there.

Writing style is very casual, which I admit is not my thing.

I would say this book might be a good choice for fans of non demanding, very contemporary novels with paranormal elements.

P.S. Check the TW.
