Just My Luck: A Humorous Account of Life's Absurdities

Rate this book
Being a human has many painful and embarrassing moments, many of which are funny with the right twist of perspective. Just My Luck nimbly walks the tightrope of comedy and political correctness with a collection of essays that turns frowns right side up again. Observational humor and self-deprecation are the foundation of these stories, relatable at every turn. If you've ever had a childhood, taken a dump, or been to the DMV then this book is for you. Just be prepared to never look at getting your blood drawn the same way again.

Reading these stories was a real delight. I absolutely loved the unapologetic, opinionated voice of Karl as he stumbled from one unfortunate or extraordinary event to the next. And whilst someone like me could never hope (or even wish) to go skiing on Adderall or fishing in a lonely, croc-infested swamp with a militant stranger and his gun, I always found something there that I could relate to, and this gave the story its charm. It also helped that Kyle clearly grew up in the same sort of time as me, and this seemed to override many of the other obvious differences. Though the differences were immensely important too. I certainly wanted to know what it was like to go to a nudist beach. And the detailed review of colon cleansing techniques was perhaps the review I never knew I needed.

Funny

This was good and parts of it are indeed hilariously laugh out loud funny. I really enjoyed it. I also loved the story of his dad insulting Elon Musk as he deserves to be insulted though not for what his dad insulted him for.

3.5 stars rounded up

I preferred the earlier stories to the ones from later in his life. (They were lighter and funnier.)

I'm rating it OK, but I didn't finish.
Just not unique enough for me. At least half my friends could have written the same thing. I didn't find any particular insights or reason to continue.

25% in and cutting my losses. There’s humor and there’s stupid. The line between the two is a personal demarcation, but I haven’t found anything humorous yet, nor do I wish to continue the search.
