Cathrine is such an amazing character! Typically in fantasy, you’ll find the MC growing into their power and skills. But Bower created a character who not only knows what she’s capable of, but owns every bit of herself! I loved getting to know her and watching as she learns more about her values and morals.

The world building was great! I found it easy to understand and imagine. I also really liked the magic system in this world. I enjoyed learning about how each magic is different and how it is harnessed. And the stones…great concept!!!

I felt there were times where the pacing was a bit off. This is where I had to take a break and read something else. It wasn’t a lot, just a few chapters, but I always came right back!

This book ends on a cliffhanger and I’m dying to know what happens next!!

As always, check your triggers!

I want to say thank you to Claire Bower for allowing me to be apart of her street team and sending me an ARC for an honest review!

RIN: AN ASSASSIN'S TALE

Plot Syopsis: Catherine Harridan is the top assassin in a secret society of assassin sisters. Being in her mid-30s, there's nothing Catherine hasn't done. When a mission goes wrong, however, Catherine starts to question her entire life, wondering if her work really is for the betterment of her home of Wraithland, or if all this time she and her sisters have been merely disposable tools for the King. And, if the latter is true, what is she willing to do to be free?

Claire Brower's fluid, gripping writing style captures you from the first chapter. Sometimes indie books read a bit like fanfiction or personal writing, but Brower's is professional, clear, and keeps you hooked. If you're looking for a mature romantasy with spice and high stakes, RIN is your book.

I felt, however, that the first half of the book was oddly out of order. Within the first 10 chapters, Catherine discovers a pivotal piece of information about herself from Adrien, but as the reader I had learned so little about the Saithes and Wraithland that the reveal had no personal meaning to me. Further on, as they return to Wraithland and I'm given context for the secret society - of which Brower does a great job of showing you and not telling - I understand better why the reveal at the beginning was so devastating and life changing for Catherine. But, before then, it feels like I jumped into a story without context. The second half narrows itself in and is incredibly focused and gripping.

While the stakes are constantly high and no character feels safe from potential death, I never felt anxious while reading RIN about how Catherine would solve a problem or uncover a mystery. Every single time a problem presents itself, or even before you think about it being an issue, a different character literally shows up and just tells her. The first example is obviously at the beginning when Adrien, with no provocation, tells her that her society lied to her about where she came from. Adrien's role in the story later could be argued as the reason for that, but it does feel a little out of the blue. The most egregious example is There are other moments like this, and it certainly made Catherine feel less of an accomplished assassin, since she never really uncovers anything on her own. Even at the end,

I was excited for RIN because it was advertised as having a mature protagonist and a slow burn. I, personally, didn't find Catherine any different from other romantasy protagonists aside from she has sex a lot, swears, and I'm told she's in her 30s. She was still brash, reckless, and impulsive. I know there are many 30 year olds like this, but for me I was hoping for a more calculated, experienced character.

In regards to the slow burn, if your idea of a slow burn is glances that linger too long or obsessively thinking of that moment their hands brushed against each other, RIN isn't that kind. Catherine begs Adrien to sleep with her at one point, and they even kiss about halfway through. The slow burn is more about waiting for when they finally have sex rather than closeted feelings. But even if that was something you were okay with in terms of slow burns, Catherine has sex with multiple other people (even having a threesome at one point), whenever she needs to "relieve tension", so you certainly don't have that built up yearning in the slightest.

RIN is quite a spicy book, which I admit I skipped those chapters. They aren't for me, but I applaud Brower for writing them - as much as I read of them - realistically. Many times I find romance in books funny and cringy, but Brower's romance is passionate, steamy, and made me embarrassed and red faced.

While RIN wasn't my cup of tea, it is great in its genre, and if you're a spicy romantasy reader looking for something more mature, it's worth your time!

This was a top read for me this year. I really enjoyed the characters, the plot, the twists and I’m very excited for book 2!

Catherine is a bad ass FMC Assassin that knows her worth! She begins to weight her options morally and takes action accordingly. She may not be the resistance but she is definitely a ripple in the water.

I also enjoyed her character growth. It felt different from what you normally read in a fantasy genre because she starts off this strong woman that’s smart, cunning, and wicked with weapons and magic. So her growth is not about her finding her power and worth. She knows that already. Instead she grows by perspective and starts to learn her values.

The love interests of the story are written perfectly and don’t over power Cathrine. They know her worth too, or they are quickly reminded. Catherine knows what she likes and isn’t afraid to take it.

Daren is a conundrum and I’m not sure if I like him or hate him or distrust him.

And Adrien, sigh, the other twisted boy you sympathize with and shouldn’t be with but want because he’s mysterious and twisted, and sexy. lol.

If you are a millennial that enjoys fantasy reads and ren fairs you will vibe with this book. There are raves and dancing at seedy taverns and pregaming before you arrive, but in the 16th century!! It’s great!

If you want an older FMC TOG vibe there is some of that and better.

Truly, anyone would love this story! Go read it!!

Rin: An Assassin's Tale by Claire Brower is a gripping and gut-wrenching dark fantasy set in a world where oppression rules and everyone fights for dominance. It is a story of feminine rage, so powerful that it could easily erase countries and continents. A story of an oppressive secret society where women are no more than mere servants to a wicked king and his close circle, doing their bidding and their dirty work. So, what could possibly happen when Catherine Harridan, a high-ranked member of said society, starts questioning its motives and purpose? Well, you can only imagine...

Claire has masterfully told us an intricate tale of a dark world where no one's motives are clear and allegiances can easily be swayed. A world full of hidden truths and falsely taught histories. A world where posing questions and having your own thoughts can easily end your life. So, when Catherine starts to dig deeper, question her missions, and really start seeing and understanding the world around her, everything will change.

Claire's world-building is deep, and it takes some time to follow and understand its intricacies. Once you are further into the story, you will fully grasp what is at stake. Catherine is a 35+ FMC, yet she sometimes reads younger, which is only understandable given her upbringing. The characters around her are intriguing, especially Adrien, given his unique abilities. The story itself is layered and complex, which I enjoy in a fantasy book.

The end had me gasping; I was certainly not expecting it. It got me thinking and pondering what could happen next, and I am sure Claire will gift us more twists and turns, more uncovered secrets and, probably, more mysteries to solve.

Rin: An Assassin's Tale is being released on January 8th, and it was an honor being Claire's ARC reader.

I really enjoyed many aspects of the lore, plot, and magical systems used throughout the story, as well as some of the characters, however, I felt that I was not the right reader for this story. This story delved into some darker issues and themes, which I felt was portrayed, written, and handled well. There were glimpses of Catherine’s character that I resonated with, as well as some of her other fellow sisters, but the content does get really dark, explicit, and is not for the faint of heart.

For those that enjoy a darker fantasy tale with a bit of spice, this might be a good fit for you!

Romantic Content: High Level Spice, Chapter 14 (Threesome), Chapter 24 (Main Male and Main Female Characters), Sexual Innuendos Throughout

✨Rin: An Assassin’s Tale✨

Diving into a world where elves have been in hibernation, half breeds (Wraiths) are enslaved and banished, and humans are terrified of magic, we find ourselves following Wraith assassin, Rin.

Rin goes by many names and least by her own. She has grown up as a Sister where they are trained from a young age by the male Warders in combat, espionage, and seduction. It is all she has ever known. But when Rin finds herself on a new mission with a handsome mindwalker, she begins to learn secrets from not only her past but from within the walls she always declared as safety. She begins to see that safety may be nowhere for her, least of all her so called home.

Rin is sheltered when it comes to the ways of the heart and normal life. She is used to using her body to achieve her means then find her solace in the drink. Love has never been an option. What even is trust? Rin undergoes character growth in the way she begins to think for herself and urge her Sisters to do the same. But with brainwashed Sisters, male oppression and vicious intent, hidden identities, plot twists, and every one a suspect… Rin has her work cut out for her.

I really liked the premise of this book, but wasn’t connecting well with the FMC and her coping mechanisms and reactions. The possible love interests were intriguing and Claire really surprises us with this dilemma; I’m curious where she will take us from here.

Tropes you may find in Rin are reluctant allis to lovers, medium spice (a threesome), feminine rage, unique magics and lore, betrayals, lots of morally grey characters, and a surprise ending.

Thank you so much for this gifted arc, Claire. It was such an honor to read your work!

Rin: An Assassin’s Tale by @claireabrower

A well developed fantasy world with a strong 30+ FMC, an interesting magic system, and a secret society.
I was so excited to read this book and @claireabrower definitely delivered.

The characters are so well written, all relatable in their own ways. I love morally grey characters and I was served. Seeing Catherine grow throughout the book was so inspiring, as well as seeing her discover the secrets that are kept from her. A FMC in her mid thirties, strong, confident, powerful who still evolves is so refreshing! The side characters are also so well written that you just want to get to know more about them.
The world building is really interesting and new, I’ve never read about a similar magic system.
I was fascinated by the beautiful, yet easy to read writing. A book filled with revenge, humor, tragedy and love. There are so many secrets and twists, it will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Thank you for this book Claire, it is one of my top read of the year!

I was lucky enough to participate in the beta read for this book. Something that appealed to me even before reading the book was the fact that it was a fantasy whose main character was over 30. This is something rare to see in recent fantasy books. The pacing was great and the story sucks you in. More than once I thought I knew what was going to happen only to be proven wrong.
Highly recommend, especially if you’re over 30 and looking for a FMC you can relate to.

What did I think of Rin: The Assassin’s Tale? I devoured every word. The deeper you get into this story, the more it wraps around your core, begging you to read just one more chapter. As you meet the myriad of characters, and get just enough information to make them completely relatable-each takes on a personality that somehow matches someone that you know in your own life. To see that kind of humanity amplified onto the pages of a fantasy is inspiring and fascinating. Though there isn’t a ton of spice, the few scenes that are there would make any heat-seeker very happy.
Tragedy, revenge, violence, lust, humor, love: It all comes out to play in Claire Brower’s world. ❤️

Rin:The Assassin’s Tale is empowering and thoughtful; the series we didn’t know we needed and I’m so excited to be on the cusp of something this special. Pre-order it immediately; you will be very happy you did!

Catherine, whew~ she has a lot of unpacking to do. First off, this is not so much a romance so much as it is fantasy. There is a romance subplot but it is hardly even second to the story because our FMC has a lot to work through otherwise. There is slow burn, but it's very subtle. This FMC is in her 30s and there's no lovesick touch-her-and-be-unalived alpha broodiness or the like. All the relationships blend into the story organically. NBD. I found it very refreshing being in my 30s myself and struggling to find this dynamic in books. Don't get me wrong, I adore angsty young love as much as the next, but I was able to better relate to this type of romance as it felt more realistic.

This is more of a book about unpacking trauma after years of conditioning and abuse. The FMC does a lot of back and forth with her own morality and trying to rationalize what is her and what is her programming.

I loved the magic in this world and how the FMC has already come into and fully already understands her magic and is able to use it so fluidly. I feel like a lot of time is dedicated to training the main characters in fantasy plots and the chcharacters in this book use that as it's already a part of their story to maintain themselves instead, freeing up this space to worry about other important plot points.

The writing was smooth, easy to read, and overall quite descriptive due to the immense world building and political intrigue. Lore, prophecy, the brink of war; all the things readers want in a solid fantasy setup. Being book 1, Browers has expertly set up this high stakes series and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

WOWWWW!! Claire thank you so much for the copy of this book! I was excited to read it as soon as I read the blurb but actually reading it was even better!

I was absolutely HOOKED on this book from the beginning and knew a few chapters in it was going to be a five star read. My initial impression of the book was if Celaena Sardothien joined the Dark Brotherhood of Skyrim. It starts with shocking action and it does not let up at all.

I LOVE Catherine. She is my favorite FMC—a stabby FMC that kills first and asks questions later. She borders on morally grey, but she does abide by her morals and walks the line of heroine and vigilante so so well.

The amount of plot twists in this book are insane! It was exciting, shocking, heart wrenching, spicy, adventurous and exciting all packed into 300 pages. Oh and the spicy scenes are HOTTTT! Literally everything I could want out of a book, the only thing I want now is MORE!

I’m OBSESSED and I will NOT stop talking about this book! Please please please do yourself a favor and pick this up! I’m DYING for the sequel because I CANNOT get enough!

What can I say without giving too much away?? I really enjoyed this story! The main character is amazing, I love that she wasn’t 22 and shows that you can do anything at any age. The magic system in Rin is very unique with various degrees of magic wielding and types.

I really enjoyed the sense of sisterhood, you don’t have to be blood related! Found family is one of my favorite tropes. Catherine really came into her own and I enjoyed discovering things with her. I’m really excited to see what happens in the next book!!

I will say, like with many fantasy books, there is some world building and supporting plot that you have to get through to get to the meat of the storyline and plot. There are a lot of characters and names that blended together for me and it took me a minute to remember when they came back. I’d say about 30% is when things really pick up and the pace increased! Thank you to the author for having me as an advanced reader!!

Wow!!! Such a great story!!
First off Catherine is awesome, although I wish it was with a K, she is older and finally realizing that her “normal life” was not so normal, and honestly was more abusive more than anything else. And when she realizes this she fights back, not just for her, but her sisters that were raised with her!

I love that the main character is older…. Not some teeny bopper worshipping some man…. I love that she is strong and paving her own way…. And the twists!!! Ugh I can’t wait for the next one!! Great debut novel!!!!

This unbiased review was from an ARC read, thank you for the advanced reader copy.

God, I love a stabby FMC, and Catherine was just that. Raised with her "sisters" to be the best assassins' in the land, Catherine mostly goes about her missions without questioning orders, or thinking about them. That is until she is tasked with taking a young girl from her family and everything that she thought she knew started to fall apart in her eyes.

The first half of the book had some points that I felt at the time where confusing, and not totally necessary to the plot, but towards the end everything came together. The plot twist at the end was one that I didn't see coming, but also really enjoyed. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

If you are looking for a book with a strong FMC, not knowing who will make it out of the chapter alive, and a unique magic system, this is a great read!

I really enjoyed this book! It’s been awhile since I’ve read a fantasy book where the FMC comes into her power and grows, not just magically but as a person too! I really enjoyed her character growth and seeing her grow from the beginning to the end of the book. The world building was easy to follow, the magic system was also different from what I’ve read recently, which made me enjoy the book even more. But that plot twist, and the cliffhanger leaves you wanting for book 2!! I really want to know what happens next!

Thank you so mych for allowing me to me to be apart of your arc team!

This story follows Catherine an elite assassin for the Harridan Society. Catherine gives off Celaena Sardothien vibes from Throne of Glass.

I’m not going to lie I 100% did not see that ending coming and I’m shook. I loved everything about this story. The characters, the world building, the plot are all top notch.

This might be Claire’s debut novel, but it won’t be her last! I cannot wait for this story to continue! Make sure you add this book to your TBR, pre-order it, and read it! You will not be disappointed!

a very promising start to what seems like will be an interesting fantasy series. i loved the premise of this book & can feel the feminist uprising coming

it would benefit from being a bit more flushed out and slower paced with more build up. it felt like things happened a bit too quickly and character development was a bit stunted.

overall i’m really looking forward to the next part of this story

I cannot get over how amazing this book was! I met Claire at a book con this year and immediately knew I needed to read her book. I am now kicking myself for letting life get in the way and delaying me finally picking it up because it was that good! I was hooked from the first chapter and literally read the whole thing in less than a day. The story was phenomenally done, the pacing was perfect, the characters were exceptionally well written and had great development, and the world building was superbly done! Anything Claire writes will be an immediate TBR add from this day forth!!!

The last few chapters of this book had reveals that would rival any SJM story and that’s not an exaggeration. The entire book was incredible, but those last few chapters had me in shock. I thought I’d guessed the twist, but it turned out I was only half right and I could not have been more excited about being wrong.

This book has everything I look for when I’m reading fantasy. There were secrets and little twists throughout, interesting world building with unique politics, century old vendettas and incredible magical abilities. There are also elves, which are an absolute necessity when it comes to fantasy in my opinion.

Catherine, the main character, is a badass assassin at the top of the Harridan Society, a secret organization that trains and raises magical women in order to shape them into the perfect weapons and spies for their country. She is one of their best, but when secrets start revealing themselves and memories aren’t quite adding up, she begins to question everything she has been taught for the first time in her life.

I loved Catherine as a character and really enjoyed watching her unravel the lies and secrets of her organization. She’s in her thirties, confident in herself and already has a mastery of her skills and magic, so the growth we get to see is of a woman realizing all the ways she’s been wronged.

I also can’t say enough about the side characters, who were all incredible in their own ways and I found myself wanting to know more about a lot of them, which I’m sure will happen in the next book.

While there is some romance and a little bit of spice, I would say this book is focused more on the fantasy aspect. There are so many secrets, so many twists and turns that will absolutely keep you guessing, and while I think there might be more romance at some point, this book feels a lot more about female empowerment and the freedom of living life the way you want. I can’t wait to see where it leads and I cannot recommend this book enough.

Thank you Claire for the honor of allowing me to read your book before it was published.

Rin: An Assassin’s Tale is everything you could want in a fantasy novel: gripping action, emotional depth, and characters you can’t help but root for. I had the privilege of reading this ARC early, and it’s safe to say this book will stay with me for a long time!
The story follows Catherine Harridan, a fierce and skilled assassin shaped by the shadowy Harridan society. But Catherine’s journey is not just about honing her craft—it’s about breaking free from a system that has defined her entire life. Watching her confront her loyalty, question her identity, and uncover hidden truths is as powerful as it is thrilling.
Catherine’s dynamic with Adrien is a standout. Their chemistry is slow-burning yet intense, and every interaction crackles with tension and vulnerability. Adrien’s own mysterious past and layered personality make him the perfect counterpart to Catherine’s strength and resolve.
Claire A. Brower’s worldbuilding is nothing short of masterful. Wraithland and its surrounding kingdoms are brimming with political intrigue, magic, and danger. The Harridan society itself is both fascinating and chilling, with its secretive rituals and unwavering control over its members.
What truly sets this book apart is its exploration of themes like loyalty, freedom, and self-discovery. Catherine’s growth—from a tool of the Harridan to a woman reclaiming her agency—is as inspiring as it is emotional.
With its blend of morally complex characters, slow-burn romance, and high-stakes fantasy, Rin: An Assassin’s Tale is a must-read for fans of epic stories that linger in your mind long after you turn the last page.

This book is destined to keep you on the edge of your seat! Hands down, one of my favorite assassin books I have ever read. Rin is a total badass Assassin with unique magic. The group she works within are under orders to capture a child with immense magic. When Rin starts to question the motives of her orders, ugly truths are revealed. Rin, a woman in her 30's is finally waking up to the fact that everything she was taught to believe was a lie. Now she fights to sever her connection with her kingdom and seeks justice, to right the wrongs that were done to her so no other girl will have to go through what she had. The characters development throughout this novel was amazing. Each assassin we meet has their own unique personalities. The spice is spicy 🥵 yet tasteful. And in the end, Rin proves herself to be a formidable, fierce, and powerful woman.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a mature fmc, unique magic, badass assassins, strong women who fight the patriarchy, spice, with an ending that will blow your mind!

So good! The character dynamic and world building here was REALLY cool.

Some insight into my emotional journey (in order of appearance): intrigue, curiosity, some disgusted lip curls, some out loud gasps (not in a happy way), some cheers when Catherine does her thing, blushing during a certain bar scene, outrage at MANY of the characters, and one final hooray when Catherine does her thing again!

Catherine: loved her inner turmoil, and how she processed information. She didn't come at it from an idealistic standpoint. She wrestled with what she knew and what she knew to be right. She is not perfect, she is not a saint, and she isn't always going to get it right.

The writing style was so smooth and easy to digest that it made the progression of the story natural and I never felt lost. Brower created a world that has so many layers and possibilities!

I'm so excited to see how this world progresses! What's next? Who can we trust? I'm ready to find out!

Overall: Recommend!

A thrilling combination of secret societies, political intrigue, high stakes plotting, forbidden magic, chaotic powers, and a powerful female assassin finding her place in the world and uncovering the truth of her life.
Catherine has many aliases, she can charm, spy and kill, she is a weapon to be used, loyal to her sisterhood and it is all she has ever known. Until she starts to unravel hidden truths on her latest mission and realises her life and that of her sisters isn't what she believed.
With magical threats, schemes for power, new allies, and conflict and corruption, she must learn who can be trusted, and who should be saved.
This is a dark and deadly world filled with manipulation, oppression, and violence, and a layered plot of morally grey and intriguing characters, magic systems, and hidden agendas.
I enjoyed the mystery, action, and twists, especially the final few chapters, interested to see what trouble Rin gets into next.

Catherine, a 30+ year old woman (finally someone not in their teens!) is groomed and conditioned to follow orders for as long as she can remember, begins to unravel the truth about the secret society she has spent her life training and fighting for.

Torn between doing what she believes is right and fulfilling the duties imposed upon her, Catherine faces an intense struggle—battling both inner and physical demons to protect herself and those she loves.

From the first page, this book captivated me, and I’m already eager to see what lies ahead for her in future installments.

One of my favorite moments in any book is discovering the significance of the title, and when that moment finally came, I audibly gasped. It was such a powerful, satisfying revelation.

I seriously enjoyed this! I love an assassin story & Rin was a strong, feisty, smart FMC. The MMCs were flawed in big ways, but they grew on me for different reasons.

I really loved the magic systems! Every time I read a scene involving magic, it was so vivid. The writing was playing out like a movie in my head.

That twist at the end had me SO MAD! 🤯

I've read very few books in my 22 years with a 35+ FMC, so this one intrigued me right from the start. It's rare for a book to open with the FMC committing a crime—granted, it's part of her job, but you get the idea. This was an impressive debut! I really enjoyed the writing style, and the world-building was straightforward yet immersive. The portrayal of power dynamics was particularly well done. I might have liked Adrien too—perhaps in another life, they could have been good together. But, alas, it wasn’t meant to be in this one.
