*This is a standalone full length novel that includes some characters from Nadia Noble's novella, The Pirate's Wife.*
I really loved the setting of this book; post Civil War New Orleans. The depiction of Creole high society was unusual in a romance. I wish the FMC had been more authentic to the time. Every time she disappeared unchaperoned, I winced. She was presented as bold and brave but I found her kinda rash and foolish. The MMC was a pirate but wasn't particularly piratical. Neither of them seemed that compelling.
I wanted to be drawn into the story more than I was.
My favorite character was the pirate queen. I"d love to read HER story.
Nadia Noble wrote this Wonderful historical romance about Adeline and Gabriel. Two people that have fallen in love in a society that forbids the coupling of “unequally yoked” ( White and Black coupling) in what seems to be around the 1700 - Dec 31, 1862 when slave trade was rampant and legal until January 1, 1863 when The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. Gabriel stated “I can’t promise everyday will be this grand, but I can promise everyday with you will be worth it.”
I did enjoy this book but it did feel like Adeline’s character was a bit inconsistent. She’d apparently been working as a spy for some time, but she still thought it was a good idea to approach conflict the way she did? I also understood the issues with class and society but I think given the context it was a little weird how things panned out? It felt more bittersweet than anything, which would have been okay if the story focused less on the romance aspect and more on the historical issues being tackled.
Very good storyline and interesting characters. The only drawback is the author did not read her own story or perhaps did not have reliable editors. Throughout the novel there are.passages that repeat what had happened just a few passages or pages earlier. In spite of that enjoyed the novel but please reread your next novel.
First time reading this author This was an action packed page turner story of two very different people finding love and adventure The characters were well developed and relatable Looking at some history after slavery brought another level of depth and drama to the story Great job Nadia I will definitely be reading the next book in this series
