What could be better than winning a contest? Winning a hamster! When Cece is given the responsibility of taking care of Harriet, the class hamster, she bungles it badly. No sooner has Harriet been placed in her care when Cece loses the precious pet.
Cece recruits her sister, Dee Dee, to help in her desperate search for Harriet the hamster. Will she find Harriet in time? Is that a ransom note she received? What will she do?
Mandy Broughton loves to read. Whether traveling or not, Mandy has a book in her hand and two more in a bag. She gravitates towards mysteries but enjoys science fiction and a good historical novel as well. In libraries and bookstores, Mandy tries to stay in areas appropriate for her age. This is not always possible as she tends to find herself with more middle grade and young adult novels upon leaving. For the record, while it is true she has spent more money on books than groceries, it only happened once. And due to the great invention of peanut butter sandwiches, her husband did not starve that month.
I received this book as a First Reads Giveaway; thank you Mandy! My copy arrived shortly before a trip across country and it was perfect for the plane ride.
Loved this book. It was an easy read for me. It's a great chapter book for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders (and even younger advanced 2nd or 3rd grade readers).
Only one typo stands out in my memory (though there may have been another). This one stands out because it's about a phone. One character picked up the "received" instead of "receiver."
One logistics glitch too. CeCe and Dee Dee get on at the first bus stop so they can talk before everyone else gets on the bus. Later in the story it mentions they got off at the "first stop." Usually the first on the bus are the last off.
Other than those two tiny minor items this was a nice mystery. It had a good combination of action, problem solving, and locations. The author also tackled quite a few themes: bullying, cheating, neglect, mistreatment of others, poor sportsmanship, responsibility (and being responsible for our actions and chores), and sibling relationships.
The story itself was very interesting. Cece and her sister, Dee Dee, are great characters. The "victim" is cute and fuzzy. The "red herring" was such a nice guy (the reader determines this much more quickly than Cece does). And the villain...he's a hot head who needs to learn a few more lessons about being truly successful in life.
I am now in search for detective stories for my 6 year old daughter (who also doesn't read English, so I must translate) This was the nice story - I like it! Flows smoothly, is logical and funny. The school pet hamster is missing... Wouldn't it be easy to simply replace it with a new one from the pet shop? Cece and Dee Dee agree - no! A fine detective story for kids about 8-10 years old, I think my daughter is a little small for it, she would't follow some lines, probably, it's a bit complicated to her, but I'd love to read it to her in a year or two. I got the book for free from StoryCartel.com.
I received this book from a First reads Goodreads Giveaway. I thought that this was a cute book. my daughter really seemed to enjoy this book and we are looking forward to reading more! Thanks!
