'Tiger, Tiger' is fun-filled adventure story for children aged six and up. The older children will read it themselves, the younger children will either read it or enjoy having their parents read it to them.In Siberia, on the shores of the frozen Bering Strait, lies the remote village of Groz. Groz has a Absalom, the tiger, is eating the villagers’ ducks, pigs and goats. In desperation the villagers beg the young village healer, Mal, to do something. So begins a strange journey that takes Mal, her cat, Grub, and Absalom, the tiger, across the Bering Strait, through Alaska, into Canada’s Yukon and on to a very unexpected ending. The story of adventure, laughs, fun, persistence and courage with its the magnificent colour illustrations - many of them full page - make this book something to treasure for many years to come.
Peter Staadecker's first book has been shortlisted for the 2018 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, and his children's book was nominated for the Leacock Medal.
In addition to books, he has written on kayaking and sailing for Toronto's largest daily newspaper, The Toronto Star.
He has at various times been a keen sailor, hiker, cross-country skier, diver and photographer.
Tiger Tiger is a lovely book to engage clever and curious children in a surprising romp, that challenges the norms of traditional story-telling. Staadecker colludes with the young reader in a delightful way, getting them to question the "once upon a time" and "happily ever afters". The mystery medicine woman is a wonderful protagonist who outsmarts the stupid. The illustrations bring the story to life. For the perfect Christmas present look no further than Tiger Tiger.
Of course, I'm biased. I wrote it. But this one had some new elements that were such fun for me - interior full colour images. Lots of them. I spent hours in the design and creation of them and am amazed. They exceeded expectations. And, naturally I think the story's great.
A very fun read with lots of word-play. The Bearing Strait and Bering Strait comes to mind. I also loved the sporadic interviews with Konstantin, the Philosopher-poet of Groz.
I will buy the hard-cove version to see the pictures!
